Introduction: In children with diabetes mellitus type I (DM1) increased risk of autoimmune diseases, including multiglandular disorders, is observed. Aim of the study: To assess the prevalence of autoimmune diseases in children with DM1 in South-Eastern Poland was the aim of the study. Material and methods: 654 children with DM1 hospitalized in Pediatric Department of The State Hospital in Rzeszów during 10 consecutive years between January 1999 and December 2008 were enrolled into the study. Serologic tests for celiac disease (CD) as well as TSH and thyroid hormones concentration measurements were performed at least once in all patients. Other diagnostic procedures were ordered according to clinical indications. Results: Coexistence of DM1 and other autoimmune diseases was found in 47 children (7.2%). Hashimoto thyroiditis (n=20) and CD (n=18) occurred most frequently. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis and Graves-Basedow disease were diagnosed in 3 and 2 children respectively. In single cases DM1 coexisted with: autoimmune hepatitis, Addison disease, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, anky-losing spondylitis, Behcet disease, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, alopecia areata. In 6 cases coexistence of more than 2 autoimmune diseases was found. Conclusions: Thyroid diseases and CD are the most frequently occurring autoimmune diseases in children with DM1 in our region. Frequency of their occurrence justifies screening tests in all children with DM1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
