In radiotherapy Treatment Planning Systems (TPS) various calculation algorithms are used. The accuracy of dose calculations has to be verified. Numerous phantom types, detectors and measurement methodologies are proposed to verify the TPS calculations with dosimetric measurements. A heterogeneous slab phantom has been designed within a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) of the IAEA. The heterogeneous phantom was developed in the frame of the IAEA CRP. The phantom consists of frame slabs made with polystyrene and exchangeable inhomogeneity slabs equivalent to bone or lung tissue. Special inserts allow to position thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) capsules within the polystyrene slabs below the bone or lung equivalent slabs and also within the lung equivalent material. Additionally, there are inserts that allow to position films or ionisation chamber in the phantom. Ten Polish radiotherapy centres (of 30 in total) were audited during on-site visits. Six different TPSs and five calculation algorithms were examined in the presence of inhomogeneities. Generally, most of the results from TLD were within 5 % tolerance. Differences between doses calculated by TPSs and measured with TLD did not exceed 4 % for bone and polystyrene equivalent materials. Under the lung equivalent material, on the beam axis the differences were lower than 5 %, whereas inside the lung equivalent material, off the beam axis, in some cases they were of around 7 %. The TLD results were confirmed with the ionisation chamber measurements. The comparison results of the calculations and the measurements allow to detect limitations of TPS calculation algorithms. The audits performed with the use of heterogeneous phantom and TLD seem to be an effective tool for detecting the limitations in the TPS performance or beam configuration errors at audited radiotherapy departments., (© The Author 2015. The aim of the study was to analyse the influence of the x-ray tube configuration on the radiation doses to eye lens and extremities of cardiologists performing pacemaker implantation procedures in electrophysiology laboratory. The measurements were performed on one, widely used, portable C-arm system, first with x-ray tube mounted above the patient table and image intensifier below it and then on a reinstalled (but essentially the same) system with under-table x-ray tube configuration. Thermoluminescent dosimeters, placed in various positions near the eye lens, on the hands and ankle, were used during every procedure. The comparison of doses received by cardiologists after changing the x-ray tube configuration from over- to under-table shows statistically significant dose reduction (p < 0.009) for the eye lens closest to the x-ray tube, left finger, left wrist, while for the ankle a dose increase is observed. The corresponding over- to under-table x-ray tube median dose ratios are 4.1 for the right eye, 4.8 for the left finger, 3.0 for left wrist and, finally, 0.13 for the right ankle. Systems with under-table x-ray tube are preferable from a radiation protection point of view. The observed significant increase in doses to the legs should be partially compensated by the use of a protective lead curtain.

Initial results are reported of a Polish-Finnish project to verify electron dose distributions calculated by treatment planning systems (TPSs), CadPlan v.6.3.2 and Theraplan v.3.5, which use different electron beam dose distribution algorithms. Treatment of gross tumour volumes representing lung and parotid cancer was simulated in an Alderson anthropomorphic phantom with thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) (Li(2)B(4)O(7):Mn,Si) placed at selected measurement points inside its volume. The observed discrepancy between relative values of dose calculated and measured by TLDs at each of the measurement points and those calculated by the different TPSs at the same points is discussed.

Measurements of cosmic radiation dose rates (from the neutron and the non-neutron components) on board passenger aircraft were performed using environmental packages with thermoluminescent TL and CR-39 etched track detectors. The packages were calibrated at the CERN-EU high-energy Reference Field Facility and evaluated at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Krakow (TL + CR-39) and at the German Aerospace Centre in Cologne (CR-39). Detector packages were exposed on board passenger aircraft operated by LOT Polish Airlines, flown between February and May 2001. The values of effective dose rate determined, averaged over the measuring period, ranged between 2.9 and 4.4 microSv h(-1). The results of environmental measurements agreed to within 10% with values calculated from the CARI-6 code.

The progress made in radiological image processing and transmission is being widely applied in new branches of medicine. The increasing use of interventional radiology in research and clinical practice means that new groups of workers are being exposed to radiation and need to be covered by a system of radiation protection. Interventional radiology requires the operator and assisting personnel to remain close to the patient; typically these procedures require placement of the hands within the radiation field. A system of hand dose monitoring was introduced in Poland in 2000. This system uses ring badges with TL dosemeters. The measurements conducted so far characteristically show an asymmetric right-sided distribution of monthly doses. As expected, operators and their assistants are the most exposed groups of medical personnel. Average hand doses may be very dependent on the type of procedure, personal skills and quality of equipment. The hand doses of these personnel are significant from a radiological protection point of view.

At the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kraków (INP), in collaboration with the Centre of Oncology in Kraków, several types of miniature thermoluminescent LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors specially designed for clinical dosimetry in radiotherapy have been developed. The detectors are manufactured in the form of solid pellets of diameter down to 1 mm and typical thickness 0.5 mm, in the form of rods with a diameter of 0.5 mm and a length of a few mm, and as two-layer detectors with a thin (in the range of 0.065 mm) active layer of high-sensitive LiF:Mg,Cu,P. All three types of newly developed detectors have already been applied in proton beam dosimetry, surface dosimetry of eye-plaque brachytherapy applicators, phantom dosimetry for vascular brachytherapy and in vivo dosimetry in interstitial brachytherapy. These detectors were found to be very useful for dose measurements in high dose gradients, where spatial resolution better than 1 mm is required.

The Techa river region was highly contaminated due to radioactive releases from a nuclear production facility in the period from 1949 to 1956. The inhabitants of the upper Techa river settlements received significant doses of external radiation. The majority of the houses in the upper Techa river villages were demolished after the evacuation of the population in 1956. Only three buildings (red-brick construction) in the former village of Metlino can still be used for thermoluminescence (TL) investigations in an external dose reconstruction study. The radiation source configuration changed in 1956 after an artificial reservoir was created next to Metlinsky pond. Preliminary TL studies showed good properties of the bricks that were sampled from the buildings. This paper presents an analysis of new results of TL investigations obtained on the samples collected from different walls of the buildings. The highest dose values in the range 1-4 Gy were found in bricks collected from the walls of building exposed to the artificial reservoir (Reservoir-10) and values of 1-1.5 Gy were found next to the Metlinsky pond shoreline. The measurements of the radiation source geometry were carried out simultaneously with the dose rates, radionuclide concentration in water and bottom sediments near the wall facing the old river bed. The measurements allow a validation of models used in the current Techa River Dosimetry System (TRDS-2000) to estimate external doses of the former inhabitants of the upper Techa riverside. In particular, the results can be applied for a more correct description of the source geometry in the settlement.
