Background: Institutional foster care is a protective strategy for children/adolescents at risk in which nurses are responsible for health education, health promotion, and health care. Objective: To validate a protocol of nurses' responsibilities in institutional foster care settings for children and adolescents. Methodology: Delphi study with two rounds for validation of the protocol that was built after a literature review and field research. A Delphi survey was used to validate the protocol by 12 international experts with experience in clinical practice, teaching, and research. The minimum agreement rate of 80% was considered. The modified Guidance on Conducting and REporting DElphi studies (CREDES) was used. Results: The protocol was validated, with an agreement rate of 90% in the second round, after expert consensus on the items related to the managerial, care, educational, and sociopolitical categories of nurses' responsibilities. Conclusion: The protocol had content and face validity and will be used to define nurses' responsibilities in institutional foster care settings for children/adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cancer in adolescence has a significant impact on psychological and physical development, and hair loss is a major cause of anxiety and stress. Objectives: To identify emotional reactions to hair loss in adolescents with cancer, the most frequently used coping strategies, and those perceived as most effective; to analyze the relationship between emotional reactions and the strategies used and between demographic/clinical variables and emotional reactions, strategies used, and their efficacy. Methodology: Quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study with a sample of 30 adolescents. Results: Hair loss is a large/emergency problem, and sadness/crying and fear/irritability are emotions that best describe the adolescents' reactions. The results also show the most frequently used strategies, those perceived as most effective, and the relationships between emotional reactions and coping strategies used and between demographic variables, emotional reactions, and strategies. Background: The health area has been adapting to the use of technology, using it as an important ally in programs for monitoring and preventing obesity and associated problems. Objective: To assess the acceptance of the TeenPower e-therapeutic program in adolescents. Methodology: Sequential mixed-method study with 47 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 in Portugal. In the first phase, data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic data, acceptance questionnaire, food choices, body image (dis)satisfaction, lifestyle profile, and eHealth literacy. The second phase included an interactive online session with a discussion forum, followed by Bardin's content analysis. Results: The acceptance of the TeenPower program by adolescents had a positive mean score in the 4 factors assessed on the scale. eHealth literacy was also positively associated with the perceived usefulness of the TeenPower program. Conclusion: The successful acceptance of e-therapeutic programs can lead to innovation and improvement in obesity prevention, thus providing an effective response to the adolescents' expectations and needs. Adolescents (between 10 and 19 years old) are an age group with a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI), due to biological and socio-behavioural factors. In Portugal, adolescents show poor condom adherence, have multiple sexual partners, poor sex education and high reinfection rates. In this age group, genital infection by Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent STI, whose asymptomatic course makes diagnosis and epidemiological control difficult. The aim of this study is to review the published data on prevalence of genital infection by Chlamydia trachomatis in Portuguese adolescents. In the Portuguese population studies, which are highly heterogeneous, a prevalence of between 2.23%-18.2% was found. Portuguese notification rates are lower than in other European countries. Moreover, national official data do not discriminate adolescents in their age ranges. Between 15-24 years old, 41 cases were identified in 2015 and 56 cases in 2016. According to the European Center for Disease Control, 116 and 167 cases from this age group were reported in Portugal in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Understanding the epidemiology of genital CT infection in Portuguese adolescents is almost impossible due to underdiagnosis, underreporting and non-isolation of adolescents in studied groups. A concerted effort at clinical and political level is therefore needed to devise an effective strategy to combat this infection in adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sexism is defined as individuals' beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and practices that reflect negative evaluations based on gender and reinforce gender inequality. Early interventions should be implemented to reduce it. Objective: To validate the Escala de Detección de Sexismo en Adolescentes (DSA) for the Portuguese population. Methodology: Validation included translation, cultural adaptation, and construct validity procedures, in a sample of 259 adolescents (aged 13 to 19 years) attending basic and secondary education schools. Results: The exploratory factor analysis showed that hostile sexism (HS; 16 items) and benevolent sexism (BS; 10 items) account for 38.34% and 10.25% of total variance, respectively. Conclusion: The DSA scale has good psychometric properties and kept the items of the original version. HS is higher in male adolescents and BS is higher in female adolescents. HS increases with age. Introduction: The consumption of addictive substances is a public health problem likely to precipitate other risk behaviours in youngsters, including physical aggression. Aim: To evaluate the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana in a student population of a city in the north of Portugal. Methods: A quantitative study, descriptive and cross-sectional. The study involved 1.066 young students, from a city in the north of Portugal, enrolled in nine high school and higher education institutions, with an average age of seventeen years. A self-administered questionnaire was applied in paper and digital format. Results: Results showed that the consumption of addictive substances began in early adolescence, that the current consumption of alcoholic beverages is high and the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana is often interrelated. Conclusions: The consumption of addictive substances is influenced by individual and contextual factors affecting these research results. Thus, it is crucial to plan an intervention strategy encompassing social, educational and health policies appealing for young students' adherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Residential care can protect adolescents by developing and maintaining their resilience. Objective: To validate the Resilience Scale (RS), developed by Wagnild and Young (1993) and adapted to the Portuguese population by Felgueiras, Festas, and Vieira (2010), in a sample of adolescents in residential care. Methodology: Methodological study on the validation of the RS, following a previous Portuguese adaptation, in a sample of 384 adolescents in residential care. Results: The 25-item RS had a high internal consistency (α = 0.925). The exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution (personal competence and acceptance of self and life), which is in line with the original proposal. Some differences were found in item allocation. In adolescents, personal competence was positively and significantly correlated with age. Boys were significantly more resilient (total and dimensions) than girls. This difference was taken as discriminant validity. Conclusion: This Portuguese version of the scale has many similarities with the original version but is different from the previously published Portuguese versions. Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic disease that is increasingly prevalent in adolescence. Intervention in selfcare is essential for disease management. Objectives: To identify the self-care difficulties of adolescents with T1D. Analyze the association between the self-care difficulties of adolescents with T1D and age and gender. Methodology: Descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study. The sample was composed of 51 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years being followed-up in district hospitals of the center region of Portugal. We developed a questionnaire on the adolescents’ difficulties based on a model of self-care roles, consisting of 18 items distributed by 4 dimensions: Health maintenance; Disease management; Diagnosis, treatment and Medication in T1D; and participation in health services. Results: Most adolescents (96.1%) found it easy to manage self-care, 29.4% of them found it difficult to adjust insulin to blood glucose levels, and 17.6% of them found it difficult to recognize the importance of glycated hemoglobin. Background: Adolescent suicidal behaviors are a public health priority. Objectives: Suicidal behavior is an understudied field in the Azores, and the few existing research studies with Portuguese adolescents only include young people from Mainland Portugal. This study aims at analyzing the adolescent student population from this island region so as to describe the current situation and plan community intervention projects in this area to meet the identified needs. Methodology: This is a non-experimental, quantitative and descriptive-correlational study with the purpose of describing phenomena and finding associations between variables. Results: The results showed that 17.9% of the 484 sampled adolescents reported self-harm behaviors, with 12.7% reporting self-cutting and 5.2% medication overdose or ingestion of toxic substances. Around 15.5% of the adolescents reported suicidal ideation. Additionally, they showed high levels of depressive symptoms (19.9%), ranging from moderate (12%) to severe (7.9%). Conclusion: Adolescents had more self-harm behaviors, more severe depressive symptoms, a lower self-concept and fewer coping strategies than similar populations in mainland Portugal. Background: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is an increasingly prevalent disease in adolescence. Self-management of diabetes is highly important for adolescents to gain autonomy and to reduce associated risks. Objectives: To identify the knowledge of adolescents with T1DM about the disease and respective care; to analyze the relationship between the knowledge of adolescents with T1DM about the disease and respective care and age and gender. Methodology: Descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study. The sample was composed of a total of 51 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years being followed-up in diabetes consultations in the center region of Portugal. A knowledge test was applied. Results: Although most adolescents had a good level of overall knowledge about diabetes and in 3 of the 5 dimensions, the study revealed some misconceptions, as well as adolescents with a low level of knowledge. Positive correlations were found between the adolescents’ knowledge and age. Theoretical framework: Several spinal problems and misalignments begin during puberty and can be associated to poor posture. Objetives: To characterise the posture of children and adolescents by searching for associations with sociodemographic, behavioural, anthropometric, and clinical variables. Methodology: Cross-sectional analytical study using photogrammetry in a sample consisting of 135 participants, aged between 6 and 18 years. Results: The weight of the backpack was inadequate (>15% of body weight) in 10% of cases. The prevalence of low back pain associated to the type of footwear and Adam’s test was 37.8%. Students with positive Adam’s test are older, heavier, taller, more sedentary, and carry excessive weight in their backpacks. Significant gender differences were observed in the anterior view for both Q-angles, with girls tending to physiologic genu valgum). In the right and left lateral views, the results in the Adam’s test varied significantly, with participants with positive Adam’s test tending to a forward head posture. Theoretical framework: Pain assessment in children with chronic conditions requires the use of multidimensional tools, such as the Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool (APPT), which identify the intensity, location and quality of pain. Objectives: To validate the translation and cultural adaptation of the APPT for use in portuguese children and adolescents with cancer. Methodology: The translation was validated through an independent process of translation and back-translation of the tool and its analysis was performed by a panel of reviewers until consensus was reached. The semantic validation of the descriptors of pain quality was performed by children with cancer aged 8-17 years, using the Q-sort method. Results: A final version with conceptual, semantic, idiomatic and experiential equivalence to the original tool was obtained. Children revealed discriminative ability of the descriptors, being able to distinguish the words that they used to describe pain from those that they did not use. Conclusion: The portuguese version of the APPT is a culturally adapted tool to assess the location, intensity and quality of pain in portuguese children with cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theoretical framework: The assessment of mental health literacy is a key aspect in the design and implementation of mental health education and awareness programmes, specifically in school settings, given the high prevalence of mental disorders in adolescents and young people and the need for interventions adjusted to specific settings and target groups. Objectives: To describe the assessment of the psychometric properties of the Questionnaire for Assessment of Mental Health Literacy (QuALiSMental). Methodology: Administration of the questionnaire to a random and representative sample of 4.938 Portuguese adolescents and young people attending schools in the area of coverage of the Regional Directorate of Education - Centre. Results: The QuALiSMental has acceptable levels of reliability and a factor structure which is consistent with the theoretical components of mental health literacy. Conclusion: The questionnaire may be applied both as a screening measure of literacy and as a measure for assessing the impact of interventions on the promotion of mental health among adolescents and young people. Background: Cerebral palsy is a syndrome affecting the adolescent and the family, which can change relationship patterns and the perception of the attachment to parents and peers. Objectives: To identify the disability-related differences in the perception of adolescents with and without cerebral palsy of the quality of attachment to parents and peers. Methodology: Descriptive/correlational study, with a random sample composed of 66 adolescents from Northern Portugal (33 healthy adolescents studying at a public school and 33 adolescents with cerebral palsy attending a Centre for Cerebral Palsy), who were intellectually capable of understanding the data collection instruments. Data were collected using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between groups in the overall attachment. The only statistically significant difference was found in the alienation dimension, referring to peers. The scores obtained in the trust and communication dimensions were high, while those found in the alienation dimension were low, which allowed concluding that adolescents in both groups perceived their attachment as being of “high security”. Conclusion: These results may be relevant to plan nursing interventions among adolescents with cerebral palsy as they provide a better understanding of the characteristics of their psycho-affective development. Several conditions contribute to the development of postural changes, especially in children and adolescents. These changes can be connected with future orthopaedic and rheumatic problems if not prematurely detected. Consequently, this study aim was to examine the prevalence of postural changes in children and teenagers studying in some Algarve's basic schools, using postural evaluation method and Adams's test. The results revealed 80,5% students with a higher shoulder, 59,5% showed asymmetrical Tales's triangle, 47,6% had lumbar hyperlordosis and 62,9% revealed lateral spine curvatures. The presence of gibbosity was verified in 67,8% of the students and a reduced number of them showed lower limbs changes. Throughout these results, it seems important the screening programs establishment and the modification of school environment, a process that will necessarily involve students, teachers, parents and the whole school community. The purpose of this study was to make a contribution to the study of adolescents' sexual attitude in the context of its correlation with the following variables: «sexual education», «age», «parent-child relationship» and «peer relationship». This was a quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational study based on a sample of 367 students aged between 14 and 16 years. The data were collected using the following instruments: "Inventário de Percepções dos Adolescentes", version adapted by Fleming (1993) for the Portuguese population; "Escala de Atitude Sexual do Adolescente" by Gameiro (1999), and "Bateria de Socialização-3", adapted and validated by Santos (1996) for the Portuguese population. Based on the results and the body of knowledge used in the study, we propose a strategic intervention plan, designed at different levels of action and from a holistic, multidisciplinary, multidimensional, ecological and programmed perspective, for adolescent sexual education. This study aimed to evaluate the alcohol consumption phenomenon in public schools in Coimbra, Portugal (7th, 8th and 9th grades) for the implementation of a preventive program of alcohol use/abuse. This is a quantitative, descriptive and correlational study. The sample included 654 students (51.5% female) between 12 and 18 years of age. The Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire - Adolescent form (AEQ-A) and the Questionnaire of Knowledge on Alcohol were used for data collection. Results show that positive expectancy on alcohol is discriminative of consumption and occurrence of intoxication. Positive expectancy exists even before adolescents have significant experiences with alcohol consumption and increases with age, which reinforces the need for early preventive effort.
