Abstract

The article presents historical information regarding the candidacy of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno, as head of the Consejo de Indias and the Casa de la Contratación in 1580. The author provides an analysis of the arguments for and against the duke in relation to his ability to execute the responsibilities of the office. It discusses Medina Sidonia's power and commercial contacts with territorial interests, focusing on its relationship with Portugal, the Strait of Gibraltar and commerce in the Indies.
