Mammalian carnivores (Carnivora) are crucial components of landscapes, because of both their top‐down effects on lower trophic level species and their sensitivity to bottom‐up processes, such as limited food resources (e.g. due to climate instability). To understand their functional role in Iberian ecosystems more clearly, and to define effective plans for their management and conservation, it is crucial to sum up the available regional knowledge that can inform decision‐making processes.We review bio‐ecological research on wild Iberian carnivores over 30 years (1990–2020) and identify key knowledge gaps and priority avenues for future research. Based on a systematic review of the scientific literature, we aimed to: 1) summarise current knowledge; 2) assess species and ecoregion representativeness; 3) identify key research topics addressed and those lacking investment and 4) suggest key future research priorities.We examined 920 peer‐reviewed articles involving wild Iberian mammalian carnivores, focusing on different bio‐ecological issues. We found considerable heterogeneity in the topics and species investigated, as well as in the study areas (ecoregions) explored, with a mismatch between the research priorities identified by researchers and the knowledge gaps.We suggest that future research should prioritise: 1) rear‐edge populations that are at the southwestern limits of the species' Eurasian range, thus being particularly sensitive to the increasing fragmentation and aridity of Iberian ecosystems, and that were less studied (e.g. brown bear Ursus arctos, stoat Mustela erminea, European mink Mustela lutreola and pine marten Martes martes); 2) less‐studied topics, such as morphometry and body condition, ecophysiology, and reproductive biology, all of which provide essential information for species' management and conservation and 3) specific ecoregions for which studies on species' adaptations to environmental and anthropic contexts are lacking (e.g. northern ecoregions of Iberia, Iberian conifer forests and Northwest Iberian montane forests). The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic represented a significant break with previous patterns of cultural consumption, effectively halting the growth of "mass cultural tourism" driven by cheap flights and collaborative economy accommodation. Surveys conducted by the ATLAS Cultural Tourism Group in Portugal were used to develop a detailed picture of cultural tourism consumption during the pandemic. In 2020 and early 2021 surveys were conducted at different locations in the country, generating over 500 responses. The research shows that COVID-19 had significant impacts on the profile and activities of cultural tourists in Portugal, with much more domestic tourism at most sites, and fewer visitors staying away from home. Levels of satisfaction and intention to return remained high, as did perceived authenticity. There was a significant drop in touring holidays, with visitors more likely to stay in a single location. Those tourists visiting cultural attractions during the pandemic had a positive experience, despite the challenging conditions. Levels of satisfaction increased compared with previous surveys in Portugal in 2004, but there were also fluctuations in levels of satisfaction during the pandemic period, correlated with levels of COVID-19 infections. Some indications of emerging alternative forms of cultural tourism include an increased proclivity for rural locations and inland areas, away from destinations usually associated with mass (cultural) tourism. This study aims to understand how conflicting stakeholders' interests and agendas of the public, private and non-profit sectors may affect the management of the tourism destination identity. It focuses on Northern Portugal, a geographical area with contrasting characteristics, ranging from coastal urban areas to rural hinterland, each dealing with different development issues. The study is qualitative in nature, being carried out using indepth interviews conducted with various stakeholders (public, private and non-profit sectors) at three wine regions located in Northern Portugal. Data was examined through content analysis. The findings suggest that there is an evident lack of cooperation between the food-and-wine and the tourism sectors in the three wine regions, which tends to hinder the construction of a territorial identity for development purposes. This study identifies the role of public organisations in promoting a shared vision for endogenous products alongside local stakeholders, thus contributing to the construct of a territorial identity. Although regional identity is studied in the relatively limited context of cooperation among stakeholders' practices, the paper exemplifies how local food and wine products can enhance the identity of tourism destinations. Context: The Natura 2000 network is the centerpiece of European nature conservation policy but its effectiveness is challenged by ongoing landscape change. Objective: Our objective was to assess landscape connectivity between Natura 2000 sites in the biodiversity-rich western Mediterranean region. Methods: We used the wood mouse as a focal species with short-range dispersal and obtained genetic data for 393 individuals uniformly distributed between two Natura 2000 sites in SW Portugal. We created a map of connectivity between the two sites that was based on a stack of analyses including reciprocal causal modeling and least-cost path modeling coupled with resistant kernel analysis. Results: Wood mice in the study area were genetically diverse and connected by gene flow over a large area. We did not find evidence of major population subdivision in the study area. Gene flow was limited by geographic distance, with significant genetic similarity between individuals within 3 km of each other. Vegetation cover and land use explained more of the variation in genetic distance than geographic distance alone. In particular, agroforestry areas and transitional woodland were associated with higher costs to movement than forest or arable land uses. This result may have been influenced by the difficulty in classifying land use in the open montado. Conclusions: The Natura 2000 sites we studied are well connected by multiple corridors for dispersal. Our analysis also highlighted the importance of the Serra de Grândola, part of the European Long Term Ecological Research Network but not yet included in Natura 2000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a panel of 12 microsatellite markers, including nine novel polymorphic loci isolated in the European polecat and three loci previously developed in closely related species, for genetic studies of polecats and ferrets. We tested the panel at fine geographic scales in polecat and domestic ferret populations of Britain and Portugal and at a broad geographic scale, using 50 polecat samples from acrossWestern Europe. At the fine geographic scales, we recorded one to five alleles per locus and observed and expected heterozygosities ranging from 0 to 0.80 and from 0 to 0.74, respectively. These values increased markedly in the European sample of polecats. No linkage disequilibrium was detected between any pair of loci and all genotypic frequencies complied with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations. The microsatellite panel allowed the molecular discrimination of polecats and domestic ferrets in Britain, where hybridisation between the two species has been documented. Thus, these loci may be useful not only in genetic studies of polecats and ferrets but also in studies to assess hybridisation between these two mustelid species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The latest trends suggest that tourism planning and development requires that destinations differentiate the tourism product in an increasingly competitive market. Expectations of today's experiential traveller require that destinations deliver the most memorable experiences. Tourism products must adapt to such changing tourist demand. As an emerging tourist destination, Viana do Castelo (Portugal) is pursuing specific strategies for enabling innovation to differentiate tourism attractions, products and destinations. Viana do Castelo strengthened its creative spaces, and thus its creative energy, by preserving heritage buildings as well as constructing a cultural transformation through better building design to showcase the uniqueness of the destination. The objective of this paper is to identify creativity strategies developed in Viana do Castelo for building the necessary infrastructure and environment in which creative tourism can flourish and to create awareness and share best practices with destinations facing similar challenges. The monIT project provides public information on population exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile communication systems in Portugal. The monitoring system is based on a network of autonomous remote probing stations, and also on an extensive EMF sounding program, both carried out in public areas across the country. Measured results are automatically uploaded to a Web site for public dissemination (http://www.lx.it.pt/monit), which also includes other relevant information about EMF for the general public. Nowadays, there is an increasing need to understand the behavior of COVID-19. After the Directorate-General of Health of Portugal made available the infected patient's data, it became possible to analyze it and gather some conclusions, obtaining a better understanding of the matter. In this context, the project developed—ioCOVID19—Intelligent Decision Support Platform aims to identify patterns and develop intelligent models to predict and support clinical decisions. This article explores which typologies are associated with different outcomes to help clinicians fight the virus with a decision support system. So, to achieve this purpose, classification algorithms were used, and one target was studied—Patients outcome, that is, to predict if the patient will die or recover. Regarding the obtained results, the model that stood out is composed of scenario s4 (composed of all comorbidities, symptoms, and age), the decision tree algorithm, and the oversampling sampling method. The obtained results by the studied metrics were (in order of importance): Sensitivity of 95.20%, Accuracy of 90.67%, and Specificity of 86.08%. The models were deployed as a service, and they are part of a clinical decision support system that is available for authorized users anywhere and anytime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Effects of cold and hot ambient conditions on the same CPV/T are studied. • A multiphysics (thermal-fluid coupling) 3D FE model of CPV/T is developed. • Effects of fluid flow rate on CPV/T performance are described. • Different cross-section coolant fluid channels are studied. • Annual CPV/T performance for Lisbon (Portugal) and Gävle (Sweden) is a case study. In the presented paper, we developed a partnership with the Swedish company Solarus AB to study the performance of a CPV/T under very distinct climate zones: Sweden and Portugal. We focus on thermal effects and their influence on the CPV/T's energy efficiency. Therefore, we develop an electromagnetic-thermal finite element model (FEM) of the CPV/T in 2D and 3D, capable of computing the heat transfer occurring due to the flow of cooling fluid. Furthermore, we use the developed model to evaluate temperature conditions over the different layers of the photovoltaic panel and fluid temperature along the CPV/T. The evaluation shows that it is the CPV/T cooling structure that has a major influence on CPV/T's performance when it functions in climate zones with very different temperature scales along the year. The shape of cooling channels, for example, must continue to ensure a better heat transfer, leading thus to a more uniform distribution of the temperature along with the receiver. Abstract: We describe new finds of Herpestes ichneumon (Egyptian mongoose) from an archaeological context in Portugal, directly 14C dated to c. 800 AD. This is at least two centuries older than a previously reported find of this species from Andalusia (southern Spain; ). Our finding provides further support to the hypothesis that the Muslims introduced this animal to the Iberian Peninsula. In particular, we suggest that Berber settlers might have brought it some time during the Umayyad conquest of Iberia or with the establishment of the Emirate of Córdoba. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Mammals are threatened worldwide, with ~26% of all species being included in the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associated with habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mammals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion for marine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems functionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is crucial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublished georeferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mammals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira that includes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occurring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live observations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%), bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent less than 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrows | soil mounds | tunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animal | hair | skulls | jaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8), observation in shelters, (9) photo trapping | video, (10) predators diet | pellets | pine cones/nuts, (11) scat | track | ditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalization | echolocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and 100 m (76%). Rodentia (n =31,573) has the highest number of records followed by Chiroptera (n = 18,857), Carnivora (n = 18,594), Lagomorpha (n = 17,496), Cetartiodactyla (n = 11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n = 7008). The data set includes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened (e.g., Oryctolagus cuniculus [n = 12,159], Monachus monachus [n = 1,512], and Lynx pardinus [n = 197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate the publication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contribute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting on the development of more accurate and tailored conservation management strategies for each species. Introduction: Portugal is one of the countries with the highest tuberculosis (TB) burden in the European Union. Patients who are receiving antitumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatment should be screened and treated for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of LTBI and the number of active TB cases in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with anti-TNF agents., Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study from a Portuguese center that included patients with IBD who started anti-TNF treatment between 2013 and 2017. LTBI screening was considered positive in case of positive tuberculin skin test, positive/indeterminate interferon gamma release test, or history of exposure to TB irrespective of the results of the screening., Results: One hundred and seventeen patients were included, 56% female, mean age 40 years; 91% had Crohn's disease; infliximab was initiated in 79%, adalimumab in 21%, and golimumab in 1%. Of these, 37 (32%) presented LTBI - tuberculin skin test was positive in 18 (49%) patients; interferon gamma release test was positive in 14 (38%) patients and undetermined in seven (19%); and there was a history of exposure in 12 (32%) patients. All patients screened with LTBI were on isoniazid for 9 months. During follow-up (mean 21.6 months), one patient under infliximab developed pleural TB 5 years after receiving treatment with isoniazid. None of the patients with negative LTBI screening developed active TB., Conclusion: In this sample of patients with IBD, the prevalence of LTBI before starting anti-TNF treatment was significant (32%), but only one patient had active TB after LTBI treatment.

New finds of bones of the Egyptian Mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon), one from Portugal and one from Spain, were directly 14 C dated to the first century AD. While the Portuguese specimen was found without connection to the Chalcolithic occupation of the Pedra Furada cave where it was recovered, the Spanish find, collected in the city of Mérida, comes from a ritual pit that also contained three human and 40 dog burials. The finds reported here show that the Egyptian mongoose, contrary to the traditional and predominant view, did not first arrive in the Iberian Peninsula during the Muslim occupation of Iberia. Instead, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the species was first introduced by the Romans, or at least sometime during the Roman occupation of Hispania. Therefore, radiocarbon dating of new archaeological finds of bones of the Egyptian Mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) in the Iberian Peninsula push back the confirmed presence of the species in the region by approximately eight centuries, as the previously oldest dated record is from the ninth century. With these new dates, there are now a total of four 14 C dated specimens of Egyptian mongooses from the Iberian Peninsula, and all of these dates fall within the last 2000 years. This offers support for the hypothesis that the presence of the species in Iberia is due to historical introductions and is at odds with a scenario of natural sweepstake dispersal across the Straits of Gibraltar in the Late Pleistocene (126,000-11,700 years ago), recently proposed based on genetic data.

Road barrier effect is among the foremost negative impacts of roads on wildlife. Knowledge of the factors responsible for the road barrier effect is crucial to understand and predict species' responses to roads, and to improve mitigation measures in the context of management and conservation. We built a set of hypothesis aiming to infer the most probable cause of road barrier effect (traffic effect or road surface avoidance), while controlling for the potentially confounding effects road width, traffic volume and road age. The wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus was used as a model species of small and forest-dwelling mammals, which are more likely to be affected by gaps in cover such as those resulting from road construction. We confront genetic patterns from opposite and same roadsides from samples of three highways and used computer simulations to infer migration rates between opposite roadsides. Genetic patterns from 302 samples (ca. 100 per highway) suggest that the highway barrier effect for wood mouse is due to road surface avoidance. However, from the simulations we estimated a migration rate of about 5% between opposite roadsides, indicating that some limited gene flow across highways does occur. To reduce highway impact on population genetic diversity and structure, possible mitigation measures could include retrofitting of culverts and underpasses to increase their attractiveness and facilitate their use by wood mice and other species, and setting aside roadside strips without vegetation removal to facilitate establishment and dispersal of small mammals.
