Leishmaniosis, caused by phlebotomine sand fly-borne Leishmania spp., is a multi-host and zoonotic disease in tropical, subtropical and temperate climates, worldwide. Leishmania infantum is the only endemic pathogenic species in Europe, and exposure to this protozoan has previously been reported in a wide range of wild mammals, including felids. However, the information about the exposure of the threatened Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) to L. infantum is still very scarce. Consequently, the aims of the present large-scale epidemiological study were: (1) to evaluate the circulation of L. infantum in the free-ranging and captive Iberian lynx populations and (2) to investigate potential risk factors associated with L. infantum exposure during the study period, between 2010 and 2022. A total of 783 Iberian lynxes from captive (n = 296) and free-ranging (n = 487) populations were sampled from different areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Exposure to L. infantum (positive to indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) in serum and/or real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) in spleen samples) was detected in 80 of the 783 lynxes, so the estimated prevalence (95 % confidence limits) was 10.2 % (8.1-12.3 %). Specifically, anti-Leishmania antibodies were found in 12 of the 469 lynxes (2.6 %; 1.1-4.0 %) and L. infantum kDNA was detected in 68 of the 333 lynxes (20.4 %; 16.1-24.8 %) with a Ct range from 26.0 to 38.0 (median: 36.0). One seroconversion and one seroreversion were observed among the 42 Iberian lynxes longitudinally sampled. Phylogenetic analysis revealed high homology (99.9-100 %) with other L. infantum sequences obtained from wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and humans from Spain. The multivariate analysis identified the habitat status (free-ranging) and age (adult and subadult) as risk factors potentially associated with L. infantum exposure in Iberian lynxes. Our results indicate moderate and widespread circulation of this pathogen in the Iberian lynx populations, suggesting its potential role as spillover hosts in Iberian Mediterranean ecosystems. There is a significant number of funerary contexts for the Early Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula, and the body of information is much larger for the Late Neolithic. In contrast, the archaeological information available for the period in between (ca. 4800-4400/4200 cal BC) is scarce. This period, generally called Middle Neolithic, is the least well-known of the peninsular Neolithic sequence, and at present there is no specific synthesis on this topic at the peninsular scale. In 2017, an exceptional funerary context was discovered at Dehesilla Cave (Sierra de Cádiz, Southern Iberian Peninsula), providing radiocarbon dates which place it at the beginning of this little-known Middle Neolithic period, specifically between ca. 4800-4550 cal BC. Locus 2 is a deposition constituted by two adult human skulls and the skeleton of a very young sheep/goat, associated with stone structures and a hearth, and a number of pots, stone and bone tools and charred plant remains. The objectives of this paper are, firstly, to present the new archaeological context documented at Dehesilla Cave, supported by a wide range of data provided by interdisciplinary methods. The dataset is diverse in nature: stratigraphic, osteological, isotopic, zoological, artifactual, botanical and radiocarbon results are presented together. Secondly, to place this finding within the general context of the contemporaneous sites known in the Iberian Peninsula through a systematic review of the available evidence. The increased frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is a major environmental concern worldwide, resulting not only in increased treatment costs for drinking water but also in impacts on tourism, commercial fishing and aquaculture and risks to human and animal health. Traditional strategies with ship-based approaches based on field sampling and laboratory analysis have been adopted to assess HABs. However, these methods are labour intensive and costly and do not provide synoptic views of the bloom conditions. Here, we show that the Sentinel-2 twin satellite mission of the Copernicus programme, in combination with in situ data, is a powerful tool that can offer valuable spatiotemporal information about a bloom of the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra that occurred on the SW Iberian Peninsula. Using the robust ACOLITE atmospheric correction processor combined with the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI), the enhanced mapping of small blooms can be performed at a 10 m spatial resolution, revealing surface patches and a heterogeneous distribution. This research also demonstrates the improved capabilities of Sentinel-2 compared to those of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-3 for continuous monitoring. The Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-2 missions provide ecosystem observations that allow the environmental community and water managers to evaluate changes in water quality and bloom distribution and that facilitate field-based measurements. Therefore, the value added by the Copernicus products in terms of frequency and synoptic observations is of paramount importance for ecological and management purposes at regional and national scales.
