A major current change in rural Portugal is the growth of small scale manufacturing enterprises but little is known about the effects of this on labour markets and household budgets. Hence, a survey of 155 industrial workers in rural parts of central Portugal examined the applicability of the Italian 'North-East-Centre' (NEC) model of labour market and household economic changes. It established the differences in worker characteristics between an area of long-standing industrial activity, two areas with significant artisanal sectors and the concelho which is industrialising most rapidly. Particular attention is given to variations in the extent of part-time employment in other activities, such as agriculture, and to other sources of household income. There was only limited evidence of the interdependence of farms and factories postulated in the NEC model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
