This study examines the stability of child attachment to mothers and fathers separately, and to both parents as a network between the infancy and preschool periods using a sample of 143 biparental families and their children (73 boys) recruited from the general population. Attachment was assessed at 15 months with the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP) and at 45 months with the Preschool Attachment Classification Coding System (PACS). First, results show no stability in attachment to mothers, to fathers, or to both parents as a network. Second, parents’ mental health, life satisfaction, marital satisfaction, and child externalizing behavior are associated with attachment stability. Taken altogether, group comparisons reveal that children with a stable secure attachment to both parents as a network have parents with higher levels of well-being and exhibit less problem behaviors than children with 1) a stable secure attachment to one parent and an unstable attachment to the other parent (from secure to insecure or from insecure to secure), or 2) who never had a stable secure attachment to either parent. As part of a larger prospective longitudinal research project to track parents as they navigate the family court system in Canada's two largest provinces, this paper reports on the mixed methodology results at Time 1 as parents came into contact with the family courts. Data was collected by using in-person surveys at seven family court sites in Ontario and five family court sites in Quebec. A total of n = 1,539 litigants in Ontario (n = 865) and Quebec (n = 674) were recruited for Time 1. Reflecting differences in eligibility for Legal Aid, significantly more Quebec (86%) litigants had a lawyer than in Ontario (37%). Only a minority of those who attended government supported mediation found it helpful. Those who were unrepresented generally expected a worse outcome and slower resolution because they did not have a lawyer. Implications for parents accessing family court services are considered. Oxygen concentrations in the deep waters of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary have decreased by 50% over the past century. The drivers of this decrease are investigated by applying an extended Optimum Multiparameter analysis to a time series of physical and biogeochemical observations of the St. Lawrence Estuarine System in the 1970s and from late 1990s to 2018. This method reconstructs the relative contributions of the two major water masses feeding the system, the Labrador Current Waters (LCW) and the North Atlantic Central Waters (NACW), as well as oxygen utilization, and accounts for diapycnal mixing. The causes of the oxygen decline varied over the last 5 decades. Between the 1970s and late 1990s, the decrease was mainly driven by biogeochemical changes through an increase in microbial oxygen utilization in the St. Lawrence Estuary in response to warmer temperatures and eutrophication and lower oxygen concentrations in LCW and NACW. Between 2008 and 2018, the decrease was mainly driven by circulation changes in the western North Atlantic associated with a reduced inflow of high‐oxygenated LCW to the deep waters of the system in favor of low‐oxygenated NACW, reaching a historical minimum in 2016. The LCW:NACW ratio is strongly correlated with the volume transport of the Scotian shelf‐break current, an extension of the Labrador Current. These results highlight the primary role of the Labrador Current in determining the oxygen concentration and other water properties of the St. Lawrence Estuarine System and on the western North Atlantic continental shelf and slope. Plain Language Summary: Over the past century, the oxygen concentrations of the deep waters of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary have declined dramatically, with dire consequences to marine life and the fishing industry. Two processes are thought to be responsible for this decline. First, nutrient and organic matter discharge from urban and agricultural activities in its drainage basin promote algae blooms, which are decomposed by bacteria that consume oxygen in the deep waters, a mechanism called eutrophication. Second, the oxygen‐rich Labrador waters feeding the deep waters of the estuary have been progressively replaced by oxygen‐poor Gulf Stream waters. Using observations and a water mass reconstruction method, we determined to what extent each of the above processes contributed to the oxygen decline over the last 5 decades. Between the 1970s and early 1990s, the oxygen decline was mostly due to biogeochemical changes (including eutrophication). From 2008 to 2018, the decline was mostly due to a reduction in the amount of Labrador waters feeding the system. Understanding how circulation in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean influences oxygen concentrations along the coast is crucial, given that circulation patterns vary naturally with time and could be affected by climate change. Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of mature plasma cells. Environmental risk factors identified for this malignancy, among others, include farming and exposure to pesticides.Methods: Using 3 independent population-based databases (the Canadian Cancer Registry, le Registre Québécois du Cancer, and Canadian Vital Statistics), this study analyzed patients' clinical characteristics and the incidence, mortality, and geographic distribution of MM cases in Canada during 1992-2015.Results: In total, ~32,065 patients were identified, and 53.7% were male. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 70 ± 12.1 years. The average incidence rate in Canada was 54.29 cases per million individuals per year, and linear regression modeling showed a steady rise in the annual rate of 0.96 cases per million individuals per year. At the provincial level, Quebec and Ontario had significantly higher incidence rates than the rest of Canada. An analysis of individual municipalities and postal codes showed lower incidence rates in large metropolitan areas and in high-latitude regions of the country, whereas high incidence rates were observed in smaller municipalities and rural areas. Land use analysis demonstrated increased density of crop farms and agricultural industries in high-incidence areas. A comparison with the available data from 2011-2015 showed several consistent trends at provincial, municipal, and regional levels.Conclusions: These results provide a comprehensive analysis of the MM burden in Canada. Large metropolitan cities as well as high-latitude regions were associated with lower MM incidence. Background: Oral care practices in intensive care units remain inconsistent among intubated patients increasing their risk of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia. Therefore, it is important to adopt systematic clinical practices based on evidence- based guidelines. Purpose: To describe current practices in oral care among nurses working with intubated patients in intensive care units. Design and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted using a province-wide mail-in survey. The questionnaire, developed as part of the study, was completed by 375 nurses working in intensive care units in Quebec. Findings: Although 87% of the participants reported providing oral care in intensive care units, the quality of these practices remains rather low. Almost all participants (98%) reported using oral swabs, but only 35% used toothbrushes. The frequency of oral care varied greatly among hospitals. Conclusions: This study provides the first portrait of oral care practices in Quebec in hope of promoting the development of education strategies tailored to the needs of nurses working in intensive care units. This article examines the views of children, parents, and parenting coordinators (PCs) on child inclusion in the parenting coordination process. Participants in a parenting coordination pilot project in Montréal, Quebec—10 children (ranging in age from 8-17 years old), 14 parents, and 2 PCs—were interviewed at the end of the project. The goal was to understand their perceptions of child participation in parenting coordination interventions. Overall, a vast majority of children and parents agreed that children should be given a forum in parenting coordination and their voices heard. Feedback from PCs on their child inclusion experience also provided rare insight into this practice. Results confirm the importance for children of being heard in postseparation interventions, even when parental conflict is high. Health care organizations need project and change management support in order to achieve successful transformations. A project management office (PMO) helps support the organizations through their transformations along with increasing their capabilities in project and change management. The aim of the present study was to extend understanding of the continuous improvement mechanisms used by PMOs and to describe PMO's strategies for continual change and continuous improvement in the context of major transformation in health care. This study is a descriptive case study design with interviews conducted from October to December 2015 with PMO's members (3 managers and 1 director) and 3 clients working with the PMO after a major redevelopment project ended (transition to the new facility). Participants suggested a number of elements including carefully selecting the members of the PMO, having a clear mandate for the PMO, having a method and a discipline at the same time as allowing openness and flexibility, clearly prioritizing projects, optimizing collaboration, planning for everything the PMO will need, not overlooking organizational culture, and retaining the existing support model. Aim To explore the characteristics that influence project management offices acceptance and adoption in healthcare sector. Background The creation of project management offices has been suggested as a promising avenue to promote successful organisational change and facilitate evidence-based practice. However, little is known about the characteristics that promote their initial adoption and acceptance in health care sector. This knowledge is important in the context where many organisations are considering implementing project management offices with nurse managers as leaders. Methods A descriptive multiple case study design was used. The unit of analysis was the project management offices. The study was conducted in three university-affiliated teaching hospitals in 2013-14 (Canada). Individual interviews ( n = 34) were conducted with senior managers. Results Results reveal that project management offices dedicated to project and change management constitute an innovation and an added value that addresses tangible needs in the field. Conclusion Project management offices are an innovation highly compatible with health care managers and their approach has parallels to the process of clinical problem solving and reasoning well-known to adopters. Implications for nursing management This knowledge is important in a context where many nurses hold various roles in project management offices, such as Director, project manager, clinical expert and knowledge broker. During the last decade, in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, the media have competed to be the first to declare on election nights who will form the next government. Irrespective of whether they predicted that any political party would be able to obtain a majority of seats, these announcements have been made within only a few hours of the polls closing. Th ese announcements have systematically preceded any public statement by the leaders of the political parties involved. Indeed, the media have developed the unfortunate habit of substituting an entire set of constitutional rules and principles leading to the formation of government by a simplistic heuristic: "The political party that wins the largest number of seats wins the election and has the right to form the next government." The media present the issue as automatic, merely a matter of arithmetic. Even if this heuristic works well when a party has won a majority of seats, it is completely inadequate as a statement of the constitutional law and conventions related to the formation of government in our parliamentary system. Th is article thus aims to flesh out the Canadian constitutional rules and principles applicable to government formation and illustrate how constitutional considerations come into play in the variety of possible scenarios. Over a third of American college students are either overweight or obese, which has been suggested to negatively impact their academic achievement. Objective: This study seeks to better understand the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and grade point average (GPA), while examining potential mediators of this association. Participants and Methods: The sample consists of 298 college women who volunteered to complete online questionnaires between October and December 2014. Results: Although no significant differences were noted for sociodemographic variables, overweight and obese female students were found to report lower GPA and academic self-efficacy as well as higher depressive symptoms, compared with their normal-weight counterparts. Academic self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between BMI and GPA. Conclusions: To foster better academic achievement in female college students, and especially for those who are overweight and obese, strategies for improving self-efficacy and adaptation to college should be implemented. This study documents lifetime experiences of victimizations, polyvictimization, and trauma symptoms among 1,400 adolescents from the province of Québec. The vast majority (81%) of adolescents were victimized during their lifetime, with most victims (82%) being the target of more than one form of victimization. Polyvictimization accounted for most variability in scores of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anger/ aggression compared to individual victimization categories. Sexual victimization and maltreatment still made an independent contribution in predicting all trauma scores once polyvictimization was considered. Gender differences were found in the victimization experiences contributing to the prediction of mental health symptoms. Sexual victimization was a significant predictor of PTSD and anger/aggression symptoms for girls, whereas witnessing violence predicted anger and PTSD symptoms for boys, and assault predicted their anger. This study outlines the importance of assessing various types of victimization among adolescents. Systematic data and observation of trends on child victimization are needed in Canada and elsewhere. Purpose The purpose of this study was to describe how spread strategies facilitate the successful implementation of the Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) program and their impact on healthcare workers and patients in a major Canadian healthcare organization. Design This study used a qualitative and descriptive design with focus groups and individual interviews held in May 2014. Participants included managers and healthcare providers from eight TCAB units in a university health center in Quebec, Canada. The sample was composed of 43 individuals. Methods The data were analyzed using NVivo according to the method proposed by Miles and Huberman. Findings The first two themes that emerged from the analysis are related to context (organizational transition requiring many changes) and spread strategies for the TCAB program (senior management support, release time and facilitation, rotation of team members, learning from previous TCAB teams, and engaging patients). The last theme that emerged from the analysis is the impact on healthcare professionals (providing front-line staff and managers with the training they need to make changes, team leadership, and increasing receptivity to hearing patients' and families' needs and requests). Conclusions This study describes the perspectives of managers and team members to provide a better understanding of how spread strategies can facilitate the successful implementation of the TCAB program in a Canadian healthcare organization. Background: The Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) project engages frontline health care providers as the leaders of change and improvement efforts in their work environment. This study explored how health care providers and managers from three TCAB units in a university-affiliated health care center perceived the development of their change capacities following their involvement in this program. Method: This descriptive, qualitative study involved focus groups and individual interviews. Results: Participants learned to work as a team and to expand their outlook. They had access to processes and tools to learn new skills. New relationships also developed among the various players, and they shared new roles, which enabled them to translate the desired changes into action and make the results visible. Purpose - Formal recognition of the human rights of people living with mental health problems has greatly progressed. We must ask ourselves, however, to what extent the formal recognition of these rights has transformed the culture of psychiatric care and improved their quality of life. Gaining Autonomy & Medication Management (GAM) is an approach that strives to empower service users and providers and promotes the exercise of users' rights by transforming their relationship with the central component of psychiatric treatment in community services: psychopharmacology. The purpose of this paper is to show how GAM highlights the issues surrounding the establishment of a culture of rights. Design/methodology/approach - For this analysis qualitative data were collected in Brazil and in Quebec, Canada, through over 100 interviews done with people living with mental health issues and practitioners who participated in the different GAM implementation projects. Findings - Issues, challenges and obstacles facing the instauration of a human rights culture in mental health services are presented. The profound changes that the understanding and exercise of users' rights bring to the lives of individuals are supported by excerpts illustrating recurring issues, situations and common experiences that appear in the various contexts of the two different countries. Research limitations/implications - This is not a parallel study taking place into two countries. The methodologies used were different, and as a consequence the comparative power can be limited. However, the results reveal striking similarities. Originality/value - There is scant research on human rights in mental health services in the community, and the issues surrounding the prescribing and follow-up of pharmacological treatment. The joint analysis of the researches in Brazil and in Canada, identified common challenges which are intertwined with the dominant approach of biomedical psychiatry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study sought to document lifetime experiences of individual categories of victimizations and polyvictimization using the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire among children from the province of Quebec (Canada) to examine whether polyvictimization predicts mental health symptoms and to assess whether categories of victimization still contribute to mental health symptoms after considering polyvictimization. Polyvictimization accounted for the most variability in scores for depression, anxiety, and anger/aggression compared with individual victimization categories. This study explored the role of parental and environmental factors in the relationship between parental separation and child vulnerabilities. Participants were from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, including 358 children from separated families and 1,065 children from non-separated families. Results demonstrated that parental separation was associated with higher levels of hyperactivity/impulsivity in children over and beyond what was accounted for by child gender, maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety, parenting quality, and household income. However, parental separation no longer predicted child anxiety and physical aggression once these parental and environmental variables were controlled. Results highlight the importance of considering the quality of the family environment as more predictive of child outcomes than parental separation per se. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The United States and Canada have been experiencing major changes in family formation and dissolution over the past decades. Within this context, the French- Canadian Province of Quebec has consistently been at the forefront-in 2011, for example, 37.8 per cent of Quebec couples were cohabitants and 63 per cent of births were from nonmarried parents. Is this difference strictly due to Quebec's distinct social and cultural characteristics or can the Quebec experience be seen as a predictor of things to come for the rest of Canada and the United States? This article discusses the causes of these new behaviors in Quebec, presents changes in the Canadian legal system to facilitate less adversarial procedures, and reports the results of a Quebec longitudinal study exploring the relationship between child adjustment and custody arrangements. The quality of the psychological and relational environment in which the child lives is shown to be more important than the type of family structure and custody arrangement. Maternal support offered to sexually abused children following disclosure may be a crucial factor in children's recovery. A person-centered approach was used to examine how profiles of nonoffending mothers could better describe their ability to support their children after disclosure. Cluster analyses based on a total of 226 nonoffending mothers recruited from child protective services yielded four distinctive groups of mothers: resilient, avoidant-coping, traumatized, and anger-oriented reaction. These profiles differed on measures of support, parenting, and variables related to attitude following disclosure. Background: Family physicians frequently interact with people affected by chronic diseases, placing them in a privileged position to enable patients to gain control over and improve their health. Soliciting patients' perceptions about how their family physician can help them in this process is an essential step to promoting enabling attitudes among these health professionals. In this study, we aimed to identify family physician enabling attitudes and behaviours from the perspective of patients with chronic diseases. Methods: We conducted a descriptive qualitative study with 30 patients, 35 to 75 years of age presenting at least one common chronic disease, recruited in primary care clinics in two regions of Quebec, Canada. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Family physician involvement in a partnership was perceived by participants as the main attribute of enablement. Promoting patient interests in the health care system was also important. Participants considered that having their situation taken into account maximized the impact of their physician's interventions and allowed the legitimization of their feelings. They found their family physician to be in a good position to acknowledge and promote their expertise, and to help them maintain hope. Acid mine drainage (AMD) remains one of the major environmental problems for the mining industry. When AMD is produced on a mine site, passive treatment techniques such as limestone drains (LDs) can be used to improve water quality, particularly when the effluent is relatively small. In 1999, LDs were installed in combination with a cover with capillary barrier effects to rehabilitate the abandoned acid-generating Lorraine mine site in Quebéc, Canada. However, the quality of the water exiting the LD does not meet the local regulations (even if a significant improvement has been observed). To better understand the behaviour of the drains, the hydraulic residence time (HRT) was evaluated using various tracer tests. Tests’ results indicate that the HRT in the Lorraine LDs is close to the minimum value targeted at the design stage but is significantly different than those estimated from the geometrical characteristics and porosity of the drains and the water flow discharge. An interview with Quebecois union activist Marjolaine Goudreau is presented. When asked about the current affairs of union activism in the French-speaking Canadian province, she talks about the essence of the newly-established "RECIFS," organism which aim is to federate workers and organizations throughout the province. Goudreau believes this fusion will improve the social reach of the concerned associations, thus impacting the economic and social conditions of local seniors, and resulting in a greater institutional visibility.

Summary: The objective of this study is to explore the factors associated with sexual behavior problems (SBP) of children toward other. The sample is composed of 187 children aged six to 11, which sample was part of a more substantial study, which included a representative sample of children under the care of child protective services. Five factors appeared to be associated to SBP: the child''s temperament (mood and persistence), the presence of violence in the family within the last 12 months, the psychological distress of parents, and a child sexual abuse. Résumé: L’objectif de cette étude est d’explorer les facteurs associés aux comportements sexuels problématiques (CSP) dirigés vers les autres des enfants. L’échantillon de 187 enfants de six à 11 ans provient d’une étude plus vaste réalisée auprès d’un échantillon représentatif d’enfants pris en charge par les services de protection de l’enfance du Québec. Cinq facteurs sont apparus associés aux CSP dirigés vers les autres, soit le tempérament de l’enfant (humeur et persistance), la violence dans la famille au cours des 12 derniers mois, la détresse psychologique du parent et le fait pour l’enfant d’avoir vécu une agression sexuelle. Background: Few studies have examined empowerment interventions as they actually unfold in home care in the context of chronic health problems. This study aims to document the empowerment process as it plays out in interventions with adults receiving home care services. Methods/design: The qualitative design chosen is a fourth generation evaluation combined with case studies. A home care team of a health and social services center situated in the Eastern Townships (Québec, Canada) will be involved at every step in the study. A sample will be formed of 15 health care professionals and 30 of their home care clients and caregiver. Semi-structured interviews, observations of home care interventions and socio-demographic questionnaires will be used to collect the data. Nine instruments used by the team in prior studies will be adapted and reviewed. A personal log will document the observers' perspectives in order to foster objectivity and the focus on the intervention. The in-depth qualitative analysis of the data will illustrate profiles of enabling interventions and individual empowerment. Discussion: The ongoing process to transform the health care and social services network creates a growing need to examine intervention practices of health care professionals working with clients receiving home care services. This study will provide the opportunity to examine how the intervention process plays out in real-life situations and how health care professionals, clients and caregivers experience it. Despite the recognized importance of fire in North American boreal forests, the relative importance of stochastic and determinist portions of intra-regional spatial variability in fire frequency is still poorly understood. The first objective of this study is to identify sources of spatial variability in fire frequency in a landscape of eastern Quebec's coniferous boreal forest. Broadscale environmental factors considered included latitude, longitude, human activities and belonging to a given bioclimatic domain, whereas fine-scale factors included slope, position on the slope, aspect, elevation, surficial deposit and drainage. The average distance to waterbodies was also considered as a potential intermediate-scale source of variability in fire frequency. In order to assess these environmental factors' potential influence, they were incorporated into a proportional hazard model, a semi-parametric form of survival analysis. We also used a digital elevation model in order to evaluate the dominant aspect within neighborhoods of varying sizes and successively incorporated these covariates into the proportional hazard model. We found that longitude significantly affects fire frequency, suggesting a maritime influence on fire frequency in this coastal landscape. We also found that position on the slope was related to fire frequency since hilltops and upperslopes were subject to a lower fire frequency. Dominant aspect was also related to fire frequency, but only when characterized within a neighborhood delimited by 4,000 to 10,000-m radii (5,027-31,416 ha). A 2-6-fold variation in fire frequency can be induced by geographic and topographic contexts, suggesting a substantial intra-regional heterogeneity in disturbance regime with potential consequences on forest dynamics and biodiversity patterns. This study documents recovery status and symptom changes in a one-year follow-up of sexually abused adolescent girls in child protection services in the province of Québec, Canada. Sixteen French-speaking participants completed questionnaires assessing symptoms, types of maltreatment endured, and services received and were interviewed using the Multidimensional Trauma Recovery and Resiliency Interview (MTRR-I), which was in turn rated by interviewers using the companion rating scale, the MTRR. Analyses of one-year follow-up data revealed statistically significant changes towards better functioning on multiple domains and less symptomatology for a majority of the girls interviewed. The recovery status of a minority of research participants seems to have worsened in the interval. The discussion considers these findings and addresses relevancy of the MTRR measures in cases of sexually abused adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Checklists are widely used to catalog field observations of plants and animals. We used 25 years of bird checklist data from the Études des Populations d'Oiseaux du Quebec program to examine the ability of checklists to produce reliable conservation, management, and ecological information. We found that checklists can provide reliable information on changes in bird populations, phenology, and geographic and climate abundance patterns at local, regional, and continental scales. Professional and amateur conservation groups that need to develop extensive monitoring programs should take advantage of the fact that checklists, unlike other time‐consuming and expensive techniques, can be used to detect large‐scale changes in an entire community of species. Objectives. The aim of this study was to describe dietary intake and identify predictors of energy and protein intake in a group of high-risk elderly people. methods. All elderly persons receiving publicly financed home care services in the area of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, were eligible, Subjects (n = 145) 60 to 94 years of age from three home care programs were interviewed to measure sociodemographic, health, and food-related behavior variables. Three nonconsecutive 24-hour recalls were used to describe usual dietary intake. Independent predictors of energy and protein intake were derived from multiple regression analyses. Results. Very low mean energy intakes were observed in this functionally dependent population. More than 50% of the study subjects did not meet the recommended levels of daily protein intake (0.8 g/kg body weight). Significant independent determinants of intake were burden of disease of disease, stress, poor appetite, and vision. Conclusions. Results suggest that community-living elderly people with loss of autonomy may have more nutritional problems than healthy elderly individuals. Municipalities face considerable challenges implementing source water protection strategies, a key component of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). In Quebec (Canada), these challenges have further increased with the implementation of a new regulation concerning water withdrawals and protection that requires mandatory watershed-scale management. The integration of spatially-referenced land use data with source-to-tap water quality data is a crucial step for source water protection (SWP). This information is provided by several stakeholders who use different data sources and data structures that are not always compatible. The main objective of this article was to test and improve a water quality data management system to integrate reliable data required to estimate source water vulnerability. The system offers a flexible data collection and sharing software platform enhanced by the implementation of international metadata requirement-based standards. We applied the software to the first steps of the regulatory requirement for source water protection (SWP) in the Province of Quebec, Canada, based on a case study of a municipality supplied by a surface water source. The main focus of this study was to test the software on the first three steps of source water protection: (1) Description municipality water intake; (2) Delimitation – Source Protection Area; (3) Characterization – Source water vulnerability. Retrospective estimation of daily streamflow for all rivers within a territory is of practical interest for sustainable and optimal water management. This implies, however, the availability of methods for providing accurate estimations of flow for ungauged rivers. This study compares the potential of statistical interpolation (SI)—a simple data assimilation technique that combines observations and simulations from hydrological modelling—with four other approaches: nearest neighbour, direct use of outputs from hydrological modelling, ordinary and topological kriging. Through subsampling cross-validation analyses based on the modified Kling-Gupta efficiency indicator, we show that SI compares favourably with these other approaches. While the performance of other methods depends on the configuration of the ungauged site in regards to the neighbouring reference sites, SI is less affected by these configurations. SI outperforms the other approaches particularly where the ungauged site is relatively distant from observation sites. In these cases, SI performance depends on the performance of the background model that relies on simulations of hydrological processes forced by precipitation and temperature observations. Our findings offer the potential for heightened performance estimates through an improvement of hydrological modelling and the use of more complex assimilation techniques for exploiting the model. Objectives: This study investigated the interaction effects between mothers' lifetime depressive/anxiety disorders and other psychosocial correlates of 6 to 11 year-old children's self-reported internalizing symptoms in the Quebec Child Mental Health Survey. Method: A representative subsample of 1,490 Quebec children aged 6 to 11 years was selected from the original sample. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed using children's internalizing symptoms and child, family and socioeconomic characteristics. Results: Four variables interacted significantly with mothers' lifetime depressive/anxiety disorders to predict 6 to 11 year-old children's internalizing symptoms: child age (t=2.415, P=0.016), mother's caring behaviours (t=2.950, P=0.003), mother's punitive behaviours (t=2.629, P=0.009) and parental social support (t=2.272, P=0.023). Conclusion: Results highlight the important contribution of the family context to the intergenerational transmission of internalizing symptoms and the relevance of taking into account children's developmental period. They support the importance of early screening of children's self-reported internalizing symptoms, among children of depressed/anxious parents. It is suggested to develop preventive intervention programs oriented towards children of depressed/anxious parents and exposed to relational difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: There were two aims: first, to evaluate the feasibility of applying a standard assessment protocol to Franco-Quebec victims of child sexual abuse and nonoffending mothers; and second, to compare results from an initial sample with available data from English-speaking samples. Method: A standard individual case study design was used for victims and mothers, and the satisfaction of the nine participating youth workers was assessed. Four self-report instruments for victims and five for mothers were chosen on the bases of workers' priorities, sensitivity to the impact of CSA, and the availability of published norms on English- speaking samples. Results are reported on 48 confirmed victims and 40 nonoffending mothers. Results: The protocol was favorably received by the CPS workers, supervisors and ail mothers and victims. Percentages of clinically distressed victims varied from highs of 68% on the externalization difficulties of the Child Behavior Checklist and 67% for 2- to 6-year-olds on the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory, to lows of 10% on hostility symptoms and 13% on the Dissociation Scale of the Trauma Symptom Check for Children. The rate of symptom-free children was lower (19%) and that of revictimization higher (30%) than most published estimates (Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993). Most mothers reported elevated emotional distress (depression. 59%) and symptoms of post-traumatic stress (intrusiveness, 67%). Although 87% of mothers believed the allegations, only 45% offered adequate emotional support. Conclusion: The implementation phase of this research was successful, given the positive reactions of workers and clients. Results on standard instruments from this French-speaking sample were similar to profiles of English-speaking victims and their mothers but firm conclusions on appropriate norms will require larger samples, cross cultural contrasts, and the evaluation of additional variables. Objective: This study sough t to explore the perceptions of health care workers about engaging patients as partners on care redesign teams under a program called Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), and to examine the facilitating factors, barriers, and effects of such engagement. Design: This descriptive, qualitative study collected data through focus groups and individual interviews. Participants included health care providers and managers from five units at three hospitals in a university-affiliated health care center in Canada. Methods: A total of nine focus groups and 13 individual interviews were conducted in April 2012, 18 months after the TCAB program began in September 2010. Content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. Findings: Health care providers and managers benefited from engaging patients in the decision-making process because the patients brought a new point of view. Involving the patients exposed team members to valuable information that they hadn't previously thought about during decision making. Conclusion: Health care teams stand to benefit from engaging patients in the change process. Patients contribute a different point of view, and this helps to ensure that the changes proposed and implemented address their needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A rehabilitative coping skills module employing problem solving and cognitive behavioral therapy and an experimental repeated-measure design was tested on 55 randomly selected persons severely handicapped by schizophrenia, most of whom had lived almost half of their lives in psychiatric wards. Unlike the control group of 44 comparable schizophrenics, the experimental group exhibited a significant decrease in delusions and increase in self-esteem, and maintained hygiene levels.
