Background: Maternal suicide attempts are associated with adverse psychosocial outcomes in children, but the association with chronic morbidity is poorly understood. We examined the relationship between maternal suicide attempt and risk of hospitalization for potentially preventable conditions in offspring. Methods: We analyzed a longitudinal cohort of 1 032 210 children born in Quebec, Canada between 2006 and 2019. The main exposure measure was maternal suicide attempt before or during pregnancy. Outcomes included child hospitalizations for potentially preventable conditions, including infectious diseases, dental caries, atopy, and injury up to 14 years after birth. We used adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association of maternal suicide attempt with risk of hospitalization for these outcomes. Results: Compared with no suicide attempt, children whose mothers attempted suicide had an increased risk of hospitalization for infectious diseases (HR 1.11, 95% CI 1.06–1.16), dental caries (HR 1.31, 95% CI 1.15–1.48), and injury (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.03–1.31). Risk of hospitalization for any of these outcomes was greater if mothers attempted suicide by hanging (HR 1.46, 95% CI 1.22–1.75), had their first attempt between the age of 25 and 34 years (HR 1.27, 95% CI 1.13–1.42), and had 3 or more attempts (HR 1.56, 95% CI 1.27–1.91). Maternal suicide attempts were more strongly associated with child hospitalization before 10 years of age. Conclusions: Children whose mothers have a history of suicide attempt have an elevated risk of hospitalization for potentially preventable conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We studied the effect of the Covid‐19 pandemic on child eating disorder hospitalizations in Quebec, Canada. Quebec had one of the strictest lockdown measures targeting young people in North America. Methods: We analyzed eating disorder hospitalizations in children aged 10–19 years before and during the pandemic. We used interrupted time series regression to assess trends in the monthly number of hospitalizations for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders before the pandemic (April 2006 to February 2020), and during the first (March to August 2020) and second waves (September 2020 to March 2021). We determined the types of eating disorders requiring hospital treatment and identified the age, sex and socioeconomic subgroups that were most affected. Results: Hospitalization rates for eating disorders increased during the first (6.5 per 10,000) and second waves (12.8 per 10,000) compared with the period before the pandemic (5.8 per 10,000). The increase occurred for anorexia nervosa as well as other types of eating disorders. The number of girls and boys aged 10–14 years admitted for eating disorders increased during wave 1. Wave 2 triggered an increase in eating disorder admissions among girls aged 15–19 years. Hospitalization rates increased earlier for advantaged than disadvantaged youth. Conclusions: The Covid‐19 pandemic affected hospitalizations for anorexia nervosa as well as other eating disorders, beginning with girls aged 10–14 years during wave 1, followed by girls aged 15–19 years during wave 2. Objectives Rapid identification and isolation of SARS-CoV-2 cases are priorities in school and child care settings to prevent further outbreaks. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical presentation of SARS-CoV-2 infections among preschool (<5 years) versus school-aged (≥5 years) children diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection, and, specifically, the probability of presenting with an isolated symptom, such rhinorrhea or sore throat. Methods Retrospective study of children (≤18 years of age) diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 in the outpatient COVID-19 clinic or the Emergency Department at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) February through May 2020. Results Of 3,789 children tested, 105 (3%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2, and 104 included in the analysis (n=49 age <5 years and n=55 age ≥5 years). While fever was the most common presenting symptom across both age groups, in the absence of fever, the presence of a combination of two or more symptoms identified the majority (92%) of cases. Isolated single symptom presentations were uncommon (<5% of cases). Most importantly, not a single child in either age group presented with isolated rhinorrhea or sore throat. Conclusions While there are differences in the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in preschool- versus school-aged children, in both age groups, isolated rhinorrhea was not a manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Background: Adults born preterm are at a higher risk of cardiopulmonary disease and premature death. Preterm birth is associated with abnormalities in right ventricular (RV) structure and function, but the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a common complication of extremely preterm birth, on these parameters remains unknown.Research Question: Are preterm birth and BPD associated with alterations in RV structure and function in early adulthood?Study Design and Methods: Echocardiographic and spirometry data were obtained from the Health of Adults Born Preterm Investigation (HAPI). RV structure and performance were evaluated by using echocardiography, and respiratory function was assessed by using spirometry.Results: The study comprised 86 young adults born preterm before 30 weeks of gestation, including 28 with moderate to severe BPD, and 85 adults of the same age born full term. Individuals were assessed at a mean age of 23 years. RV systolic function was altered in the preterm group, with lower tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and lower RV s' and RV outflow tract velocity time integral values, especially in those born preterm with BPD. Nine (36%) participants born preterm with BPD, six (13%) participants born preterm without BPD, and six (8%) participants born full term had a tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion value < 16 mm, a marker of RV systolic dysfunction (P value for the comparison between preterm no BPD and BPD, .032). No difference was found in RV diastolic function or estimates of pulmonary artery pressure between groups. Although respiratory function was altered in those born preterm, and more so in the case of BPD, no association was observed between spirometry indices of respiratory function and RV systolic function.Interpretation: Preterm birth is associated in adulthood with alterations in RV systolic function, which are more pronounced in the case of BPD.Clinical Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov; No.: NCT03261609; URL: www.clinicaltrials.gov. Objective: Birth outcomes of women with anorexia nervosa are poorly understood. We hypothesized that hospitalization for anorexia nervosa before or during pregnancy is associated with an elevated risk of adverse maternal and infant birth outcomes. Method: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 2,134,945 pregnancies in Quebec, Canada, from 1989 to 2016. The main exposure measure was anorexia nervosa requiring hospital treatment before or during pregnancy. Outcome measures included stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, small‐for‐gestational age birth, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery, and other pregnancy disorders. We computed risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between anorexia nervosa and birth outcomes adjusted for maternal characteristics. Results: Compared with no hospitalization, anorexia nervosa hospitalization was associated with 1.99 times the risk of stillbirth (95% CI 1.20–3.30), 1.32 times the risk of preterm birth (95% CI 1.13–1.55), 1.69 times the risk of low birth weight (95% CI 1.44–1.99), and 1.52 times the risk of small‐for‐gestational age birth (95% CI 1.35–1.72). The associations with low birth weight and small‐for‐gestational age birth were more prominent in women hospitalized for anorexia nervosa during pregnancy or within 2 years of delivery. Hospitalization for anorexia nervosa was associated with certain maternal outcomes, including precipitate labor, acute liver failure, and admission to an intensive care unit. Discussion: Hospitalization for anorexia nervosa before or during pregnancy is associated with adverse infant and maternal outcomes.
