Pharmacopuncture is a widely used Korean medicine treatment, but its usage patterns and associated factors remain unclear. This study aimed to explore factors related to the use of pharmacopuncture alongside acupuncture and investigate the associated medical cost burden in South Korea. We analyzed the 2019 Korea Health Panel Annual Data, focusing on adult outpatients who received acupuncture alone or both acupuncture and pharmacopuncture (PA). We employed individual-level and visit-level approaches, using chi-square tests, t-tests, and binary logistic regression for analysis. Among 1280 patients, 10% were PA users. Logistic regression showed that PA use was significantly associated with being aged 30 to 49 (odd ratio [OR] = 2.531; P = .009), having an education level of elementary school or lower (OR = 2.571; P = .011), and being in the 2nd (OR = 1.914; P = .041) or 3rd income percentile (OR = 1.925; P = .020). Of 13,101 medical visits, 5.80% involved PA, with PA visits incurring significantly higher costs than acupuncture only visits (KRW 4438.33 vs 14,700.16; P < .001). Arthritis, shoulder disorders, and other joint conditions were more prevalent among PA visits (P < .001). This study reveals socioeconomic factors influencing pharmacopuncture use and highlights potential health inequalities in its access in South Korea. The higher costs associated with PA visits suggest a need for considering its inclusion in health insurance coverage. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Approximately 27% of individuals seeking Korean medicine (KM) services in South Korea are prescribed herbal decoctions. The South Korean government has considered the validity of providing National Health Insurance coverage for herbal decoctions. Therefore, it is important to investigate their safety., Aim of the Study: To investigate the safety of herbal decoctions commonly prescribed by KM doctors and to assess their effects on liver and kidney function by comprehensively analyzing Korean clinical studies in a scoping review., Materials and Methods: The Arksey and O'Malley framework and modified methods were applied in this scoping review. A comprehensive search of seven electronic health databases was conducted, and relevant clinical studies published between 2000 and 2022 were identified. Subsequently, only clinical studies reporting the results of liver and/or renal function tests in patient prescribed herbal decoctions by KM doctors were included. The characteristics of the included clinical studies and the reported proportion of each liver and/or renal function indicator were analyzed. Meta-analyses of the effects of herbal decoction on liver and/or renal function reported in prospective cohort studies were also performed., Results: Fifty-nine clinical studies were included in this review. The proportion of prospective cohort studies markedly decreased in the 2010s compared to the 2000s, while there was no noticeable change in the number of relevant clinical studies. Herbal decoctions were prescribed for less than one month in most included studies. Abnormal changes in liver or renal function indicators were identified in a small number of studies (3.70% and 7.69%, respectively). In a meta-analysis of 15 prospective cohort studies, no statistically significant changes in four liver function indices and two renal function indices were observed before and after the prescription of herbal decoctions., Conclusions: Qualitative and quantitative analyses demonstrated favorable safety profiles for herbal decoctions. This scoping review includes the gaps noted between clinical application and research regarding the safety profiles of herbal decoctions. Objective: This systematic review analysed the effectiveness of mind-body modalities (MBMs) in Hwa-byung (HB)., Methods: Ten electronic databases were searched. Intervention studies using MBMs for individuals with HB, published up to July 2023, were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane RoB and ROBINS-I tools. Meta-analysis of continuous variables was presented as mean differences (MDs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Nine studies including five randomized controlled clinical trials, were included. The MBM types were meditation, relaxation, biofield therapy, art therapy, and forest-based MBM, and comprehensive HB programs. Most studies used an MBM group, with 5-6 sessions delivered during an average of 4-5 weeks. As a result of the meta-analysis, art therapy showed a statistically significantly better effect on improving the Hwa-Byung Scale (HB-S) score compared to the waitlist control (MD = -7.74; 95% CI = -9.81 to -5.66). In the before-and-after comparison, MBMs were frequently reported to have significant benefits for improving the HB-S total score (7/7, 100%), depressive mood (4/5, 80%), and state anxiety (6/8, 75%). Some methodological flaws were identified in the included studies, including the reliability of diagnosis, non-implementation of assessor blinding, and inappropriate control groups., Conclusions: This review identified potentially promising MBMs that were not previously recommended in the current HB clinical practice guidelines. Objective: Disasters adversely affect the mental health of disaster survivors, leading to depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders. Survivors complain of not only psychological symptoms but also physical symptoms such as insomnia, pain, and fatigue. Providing immediate and effective psychological support to all survivors is difficult because human and physical medical resources are limited. Therefore, the authors developed a manual for disaster medical support using Korean medicine (KM) for disaster survivors to provide prompt, effective, and long-term support that supplement existing psychological support. Methods: In this article, the authors introduce KM treatment protocols, which are unique elements of the manual. In addition, the authors have developed a step-by-step treatment protocol based on the stage and condition of survivors, as well as separate treatment protocols for psychological and physical symptoms. Results: The interventions include ear acupuncture, acupuncture, herbal medicine, breathing relaxation, stabilization techniques, emotional freedom technique, and self-care methods such as acupressure, exercise, and walking meditation. This manual has been certified as an official procedure of the Korean Society of Oriental Neuropsychiatry. Conclusions: The authors believe that this manual will enable KM doctors to be effectively utilized as medical resources at disaster sites. Furthermore, this manual would provide a good model that can be extended to countries that wish to use integrative medicine for disaster support to implement the commitments of the Declaration of Astana.

Purpose: This study investigated the validity of introducing a clinical skills examination (CSE) to the Korean Oriental Medicine Licensing Examination through a mixed-method modified Delphi study, Methods: A 3-round Delphi study was conducted between September and November 2022. The expert panel comprised 21 oriental medicine education experts who were officially recommended by relevant institutions and organizations. The questionnaires included potential content for the CSE and a detailed implementation strategy. Subcommittees were formed to discuss concerns around the introduction of the CSE, which were collected as open-ended questions. In this study, a 66.7% or greater agreement rate was defined as achieving a consensus., Results: The expert panel’s evaluation of the proposed clinical presentations and basic clinical skills suggested their priorities. Of the 10 items investigated for building a detailed implementation strategy for the introduction of the CSE to the Korean Oriental Medicine Licensing Examination, a consensus was achieved on 9. However, the agreement rate on the timing of the introduction of the CSE was low. Concerns around 4 clinical topics were discussed in the subcommittees, and potential solutions were proposed., Conclusion: This study offers preliminary data and raises some concerns that can be used as a reference while discussing the introduction of the CSE to the Korean Oriental Medicine Licensing Examination.

Nurses are vulnerable to mental health challenges, including burnout, as they are exposed to adverse job conditions such as high workload. The mental health of this population can relate not only to individual well-being but also to patient safety outcomes. Therefore, there is a need for a mental health improvement strategy that targets this population. This cross-sectional survey study investigates emotional labor, burnout, turnover intention, and medical error levels among 117 nursing staff members in a South Korean university hospital; it also analyzes correlations among outcomes and conduct correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis to determine relationships among these factors. The participants had moderate to high levels of emotional labor and burnout, and 23% had experienced medical errors within the last six months. Save for medical errors, all outcomes significantly and positively correlated with each other. These results can be used to improve the mental health outcomes of nurses working in the hospital and their consequences. Specifically, the job positions of nursing personnel may be a major consideration in such a strategy, and job-focused emotional labor and employee-focused emotional labor may be promising targets in ameliorating turnover intention and client-related burnout, respectively.

In public health, the plight of the solitary elderly is associated with serious social and medical burden. In this vulnerable population, neuropsychiatric complications such as senile depression and dementia as well as chronic pain conditions often co-occur. In this case report, we present a case of an 81-year-old solitary woman who received one year of visiting care service with Korean medicine treatments in a public health setting. During the one year, her pain severity (measured using numeric rating scale) remained moderate after her initial decline and her depressive symptoms and cognitive function scales (Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form Korean and the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination for Dementia Screening) remained almost unchanged; however, another cognitive function scale (Korean version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment) showed noticeable improvements. This case report suggests that providing visiting care services with Korean medicine may be a viable strategy for addressing the issues of the solitary elderly., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Idiopathic short stature (ISS) causes a high economic burden worldwide. As part of a research project that synthesizes economic evidence for Korean medicine treatment of ISS, we describe the methods that will be used for the comprehensive review of articles that analyze health-related economic evaluation for available interventions for ISS using a systematic review methodology., Methods: Eight electronic English, Korean, and Chinese databases will be searched from their inception until December 2020 to identify studies on the economic evaluation of available interventions on ISS, without language, study design, or publication status restrictions. From the included studies, the effectiveness, utility, and cost data will be collected as the outcome measures by two researchers independently. Descriptive analysis of individual studies will be conducted. If it is judged that the interventions and outcomes of the included studies are sufficiently homogeneous, we will attempt a quantitative synthesis through meta-analysis using Review Manager version 5.4 software (Cochrane, London, UK)., Results: This study will summarize the evidence regarding the economic evaluation of available interventions for ISS., Conclusions: The findings of this review will help clinicians and patients in evidence-based decision-making in clinical settings and help policy makers develop effective policies and distribute resources based on the available evidence., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s). Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify different physical and mental characteristics among three common Sasang types, Tae-eum, So-yang, and So-eum (except scarce type, Tae-Yang) in preschoolers, to improve constitutional diagnoses., Methods: Our study included 65 boys and 67 girls from six kindergartens in South Korea. The number of children who were categorized as Tae-Yang, Tae-Eum, So-Yang, and So-Eum types were 1, 56, 40, and 35, respectively. We measured height, weight, mid-parental height, predicted adult height, ponderal index (PI), and findings from the junior temperament and character inventory 3 to 6., Results: The Tae-eum type exhibited higher weight percentiles and PIs than the other types (p < 0.001), and the So-eum type displayed higher harm avoidance (HA) scores than the Tae-eum type (p = 0.033)., Conclusions: Children with high PIs and low HA scores have a higher probability of being classified as the Tae-eum type than as the So-eum type., (© 2020 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.)

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected the world, and its deleterious effects on human domestic life, society, economics, and especially on human mental health are expected to continue. Mental health experts highlighted health issues this pandemic may cause, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Mind-body intervention, such as mindfulness meditation, has accumulated sufficient empirical evidence supporting the efficacy in improving human mental health states and the use for this purpose has been increasing. Notably, some of these interventions have already been tried in the form of telemedicine or eHealth. Korea, located adjacent to China, was exposed to COVID-19 from a relatively early stage, and today it is evaluated to have been successful in controlling this disease. "The COVID-19 telemedicine center of Korean medicine" has treated more than 20% of the confirmed COVID-19 patients in Korea with telemedicine since 9 March 2020. The center used telemedicine and mind-body modalities (including mindfulness meditation) to improve the mental health of patients diagnosed with COVID-19. In this paper, the telemedicine manual is introduced to provide insights into the development of mental health interventions for COVID-19 and other large-scale disasters in the upcoming new-normal era.
