My objective in this dissertation is to analyze the interaction between the transformations within Catholicism with the housing issue in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The forms of interaction and intervention between Catholic segments and housing policies mark a long experience of contacts and adaptations between the Church, local and international actors and the State, with profound impacts for the production of the urban space in Rio de Janeiro and for the delimitation of the housing problem . If, on the one hand, these contacts and adaptations were shaped by impositions of global, national and local political circumstances (and in response to the agency of favela residents), on the other, they respond to transformations within Catholicism itself. In this sense, I sought to reconstruct the history of interventions in popular housing, in which the Catholic Church took part, choosing as an object the mediation exercised by the Church in urban land conflicts through the Pastoral de Favelas. I analyze the experiences of the Fundação Leão XIII (1947) and Cruzada São Sebastião (1955), establishing a special focus on the emergence and relevance of the juridical-pastoral service linked to the Pastoral de Favelas in the period that comprises the outbreak of the attempt to remove the Vidigal community, in 1977, to the present time. Joining Simmel's concept of sociation, I reflected on the interactions between the multiple individual and collective actors involved in the dynamics of urban land conflicts and understood, from these interactions, that conflict is part of a constructive process, not just a negative one. In a direction opposite to Weber's notions of elective affinity in the relationship between faith and politics, as proposed in Löwy (2004), I reflected on how people with such contrasting trajectories and rhetoric manage to articulate around some common point, without it suspending their differences. In this research, I used a qualitative methodology, based on participant observation, bibliographical and documentary analysis. Quantitative data were also used. From these approaches, I sought to analyze interaction dynamics between Church, State and civil society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
