The article discusses the implications for Brazil of the selection of its city Rio de Janeiro as the site of the 2016 Olympic Games. It asserts that Brazil, like Spain in 1992, South Korea in 1988, and China in 2008, sees hosting the Olympics as an opportunity to shed its reputation as underdeveloped, attract investment, and improve its economic conditions. The article notes in particular that the Olympics represent a chance to shake the longstanding impression of Rio de Janeiro as a hotbed of urban violence. It mentions that in preparation for the 2016 Olympics, Brazil is planning major infrastructure projects and hoping to win a large number of Olympic medals.

A rapid rate of growth in Rio de Janiero and efforts by its municipal government to attract investment are discussed in terms of the city rivalry with São Paulo as a center of finance and commerce, which the latter has traditionally dominated. Infrastucture of the two cities is compared, especially improvements in Rio de Janiero related to its hosting of the 2016 Olympics.
