The European Union's specific financial subsidies have supported pluriactivity development in farms through agritourism. By allocating specific funds aimed at encouraging farm diversification and increasing farmers' income, the European Union seeks to reduce rural marginalisation due to emigration, which is a central target of the Common Agricultural Policy. Thus, this research aims to quantitatively assess the impact of these financial subsidies on the growth of Romanian agritourism, determine the socio-economic variables that have affected this, and assess whether agritourism has lessened permanent emigration from Romania. The results reveal that the GDP levels and the number of employed people have influenced the direct role of financial subsidies allocated by the Common Agricultural Policy and aimed towards agritourism growth. The analysis also showed a few significant factors impacting rural emigration. Agritourism is indirectly connected to population density, suggesting that, over the time of investigation, less populated areas showed significant growth in agritourism. This research realises its novelty by investigating if agritourism serves as a socio-economic protection in rural Romania and by assessing which specific aids—decoupled payments or rural development supports—allocated by the Common Agricultural Policy― successfully restrict permanent emigration and marginalisation in rural areas. • The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy helps prevent Romanian emigration. • Both pillars of the Common Agricultural Policy positively affect rural Romania. • Agritourism shows promise in financially stabilizing rural Romania. • Agritourism contributes to farm resource diversification. • Agritourism reduces marginalisation in rural Romania. Since the 1990s, there has been a notable rise in agritourism enterprises in Romania owing to new tourism flows coming from various European countries. The predominant aim of this research was to assess the impact of financial subsidies allocated by the European Union on the growth of Romanian agritourism through a quantitative approach that seeks to identify which socio-economic variables have most affected it, and to assess, in addition, whether the advent of agritourism has lessened the incidence of permanent emigration from Romania. The analysis has been structured in two different stages. The first phase assesses the role that the financial subsidies allocated through the Common Agricultural Policy have played in the growth of agritourism; the second phase investigates the main cause-effect relationships which have acted on the growth of agritourism in Romania. Over the period 2007-2016, socio-economic variables have had an appreciable effect on enhancing agritourism, even if factors such as permanent emigration, people at risk of severe poverty, and productivity in the primary sector, have been the notable drivers in influencing the development of agritourism. Although the Romanian agriculture has a significant share in GDP, during various steps taken to adapt Romanian accounting to market economy needs, specific references to agriculture have not been made. Providing generic information which is not specific to agriculture field alters the quality of financial statements of agricultural entities and therefore the users' decisions. Moreover, Romania is involved in adopting IFRS and member of European Union (actively involved in Common Agricultural Policy). In this context, our paper aims to signal the need for specific information publishing in the case of agricultural entities and identifying ways to improve the quality of financial information published by them. In order to achieve these objectives, our study proposes a set of appendices that should be included in the notes to the financial statements of agricultural entities, with the reference information required by Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN).
