The paper presents the research steps necessary to evaluate the effects of human activities on the soils of the Sureanu Mountains and to create an integrated cartographic model that will highlight areas with qualitatively and/or quantitatively degraded soils. The first stage consisted in the acquisition of information necessary for correlations between different data sets, for theoretical modeling, and for guiding future field research. This stage resulted in the creation of an ARCGIS database, with vector and raster data. The second stage consisted mainly of field research and recording the data obtained. 349 soil thickness measurements were made from as many observation points. Romanian journalist, radio producer, record producer and jazz drummer, Cornel Chiriac (1942-1975) was born in Bessarabia. He graduated from the University of Bucharest's Faculty of English Language. Cornel produced for Radio România the most popular music show of the 1960s - METRONOM. After Invasion of Czechoslovakia he played a ballad which relates how five small wolves and a bigger one attacked a sheepfold. Later put on The Beatles' Back in the USSR. He was discovered by Radio Free Europe director Noel Bernard in the Traiskirchen refugee camp and continued his activity in Munich, in RFE's Romanian-language section. He re-launched Metronom and Jazz magazin, and started Jazz à la carte. On March 4, 1975, Cornel was stabbed near his car, in a Munich parking lot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In addition to tectonics, stratigraphy, paleontology, economic geology, hydrogeology and other geological fields, Ion Popescu-Voitești also addressed paleogeography problems. In 1936, he published a fascinating book, unique in the country at the time, regarding the geological-paleogeographical evolution of the Romania territory from the Silurian to the Quaternary. From his works in this field, we chose two themes, one related to the formation of the Olt transversal valley (1918, 1936) and one related to the formation of the transversal valley of the Danube and to its paleo-course in the Romanian Plain (1936, 1940). This approach is an analysis of the political repression against the Catholic Church in Romania during the first decades of the Socialist regime. The author employs historical but also and complementary tools in focusing on the concept of treason, seen also as betrayal of the State, the clerical hierarchy, friends, and family. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is produced in large quantities all over the world, so treating them is of concern for any country. This paper aims to present an overview on municipal waste treatment operations, and also an analysis of generated, recovered and disposed MSW amounts obtained from Statistical office of the European Union (EUROSTAT). The purpose of this analysis is to make a comparison between Romania, the other Member States of the European Union and the targets set in Article 11(2) of Directive (EU) 2018/851 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 May 2018 amending Directive 2008/98/EC on waste. The waste recycling rate of just 13.9% in 2017 highlights the situation Romania is facing, given that the recycling rate to be reached by 2020 is 50% by weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Born in 1935 in Bessarabia, a province in the Kingdom of Romania situated on the left bank of the Prut river, Paul Goma faced the tragical historical experiences from his early years, during the Second World War. When he was 9 years old, he took refuge together with his parents in Romania. Being a true nonconformist, he was harassed by the Securitate since high school years. He was arrested during the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, when he was a student within the University of Bucharest. He went on trial and sentenced to 2 years in prison for „public agitation”. Prison poetry was one of the ways to resist the destructive pressure of the Romanian prison system. It offered thousands of political prisoners the opportunity to survive through artistic expression of a moral and spiritual predicament.
