THE CREATION OF AN INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM OF MACHINE TRANSLATION WITH AUTOMATIC INDEXING OF THE TRANSLATED MATERIALS PRESUMES THE DEVELOPMENT OF DICTIONARIES WHICH PROVIDE FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF KEY WORDS AND WORD COMBINATIONS, FOLLOWED BY THEIR TRANSLATION INTO THE DESCRIPTORS OF THE SEARCH LANGUAGE. THREE SIGNS WHICH SHOW THAT A GIVEN WORD IS A KEYWORD ARE CONSIDERED--(1) THE WEIGHT OF THE TERMINOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE. (2) THE WEIGHT OF THE TERMINOLOGICAL VALENCE (THE CAPACITY OF THE WORD OF JOINING WITH OTHER WORDS TO FORM WORD-PHRASES), AND (3) THE DISTRIBUTIVE CHARACTERISTICS IN THE MAKEUP OF THE MULTI-COMPONENT WORD COMBINATIONS. THE CONCLUSION IS REACHED THAT ALL THE NOUNS AND WORDS DESCRIBING THEM, ACTIVELY USED IN SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL TEXTS, ARE CHARACTERIZED BY SOME DEGREE OF TERMINOLOGICAL QUALITY, WHICH FLUCTUATES BETWEEN 1 (100 PER CENT) AND O. THE VOCABULARY OF SCIENTIFIC-TECHNICAL TEXTS CAN BE DIVIDED BY THE EVALUATIVE METHOD INTO CATEGORIES OF WORDS AND WORD-PHRASES WITH DIFFERENT DEGREES OF TERMINOLOGICAL QUALITY.
