The article discusses the occurrence of diurnal and long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations. Diurnal fluctuations in IOP occur in both healthy eyes and in the eyes of glaucomatous patients. Multiple studies to assess the IOP variations that happened over a full 24 hours are conducted at a sleep laboratory at the University of California in San Diego. It is found that IOP tends to be higher in the glaucomatous subjects who tend to have higher pressures during the nocturnal period.
