American Mortgage Network of San Diego, California, reported Monday that its third-quarter originations dropped 6% from the second quarter, to $3 billion, because mortgage rates rose in July. The wholesale unit of American Residential Investment Trust Inc. also said that last month's originations fell about 29% from August, to $668 million. Nonetheless, loan applications last month rose 18% from August, to $1.3 billion, and as the refinancing market shrinks, the network is continuing to add salespeople in existing markets and is opening more branches. During the third quarter it expanded its sales force by a third, adding 21 account executives, and it opened three regional loan production offices.
