This study explores the impacts of global warming on the reproductive efforts of Posidonia oceanica, a key seagrass species endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. By analyzing data from five areas in Sardinia in February 2023, we have investigated the relationship between thermal descriptors and P. oceanica flowering and fruiting variables. In fact, whether climate change has been affected the distribution of seagrasses by changing their reproductive efforts is still controversial and our findings contribute to this ongoing debate, highlighting a noticeable increase in reproductive events potentially affected by rising temperature. Overall, mean summer sea surface temperature (SST) was positively associated to inflorescence density, presence of living fruits and fruit size; living fruits and fruit size were also influenced positively by the maximum SST within 3 months before sampling (November–February). Both flowering and fruiting were negatively affected by the maximum SST within 1 month before inflorescence observation and mean winter SST, respectively, suggesting that P. oceanica reproductive effort depends on the duration and the temporal context in which the anomaly occurs. However, the high variability between meadows of the same area highlights the need of future studies to focus on the uncertainties related to local factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Sustainable management requires spatial mapping of both species distribution and human activities to identify potential risk of conflict. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a priority species of the European Union Habitat Directive, thus, to promote its conservation, the understanding of habitat use and distribution, as well as the identification and spatial trend of the human activities which may directly affect populations traits, is pivotal. Methods. A MaxEnt modeling approach was applied to predict the seasonal (from April to September) habitat use of a small population of bottlenose dolphins in the north-western Sardinia (Mediterranean Sea) in relation to environmental variables and the likelihoods of boat and fishing net presence. Then, the overlapping areas between dolphin, fishing net and boat presence were identified to provide insights for the marine spatial management of this area. Results. Three of the main factors influencing the seasonal distribution of bottlenose dolphins in the area are directly (boating and fishing) or indirectly (ocean warming) related to human activities. Furthermore, almost half of the most suitable area for dolphins overlapped with areas used by fishing and boating. Finally, relying on fishing distribution models, we also shed light on the potential impact of fishing on the Posidonia oceanica beds, a protected habitat, which received higher fishing efforts than other habitat types. Discussion. Modelling the spatial patterns of anthropogenic activities was fundamental to understand the ecological impacts both on cetacean habitat use and protected habitats. A greater research effort is suggested to detect potential changes in dolphin habitat suitability, also in relation to ocean warming, to assess dolphin bycatch and the status of target fish species, and to evaluate sensitive habitats conditions, such as the Posidonia oceanica meadow. Global warming is expected to have inexorable and profound effects on marine ecosystems, particularly in foundation species such as seagrasses. Identifying responses to warming and comparing populations across natural temperature gradients can inform how future warming will impact the structure and function of ecosystems. Here, we investigated how thermal environment, intra-shoot and spatial variability modulate biochemical responses of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Through a space-for-time substitution study, Fatty acid (FA) profiles on the second and fifth leaf of the shoots were quantified at eight sites in Sardinia along a natural sea surface temperature (SST) summer gradient (about 4 °C). Higher mean SST were related to a decrease in the leaf total fatty acid content (LTFA), a reduction in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), omega-3/omega-6 PUFA and PUFA/saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratios and an increase in SFA, monounsaturated fatty acids and carbon elongation index (CEI, C18:2 n-6/C16:2 n-6) ratio. Results also revealed that FA profiles were strongly influenced by leaf age, independently of SST and spatial variability within sites. Overall, this study evidenced that the sensitive response of P. oceanica FA profiles to intra-shoot and spatial variability must not be overlooked when considering their response to temperature changes. Simple Summary: Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are intensifying due to global warming. Based on their effects on biochemical reactions, they are also likely to affect coastal biogeochemistry. We investigated organic matter quantity, composition and degradation rates in nearshore sediments affected by simulated MHWs, with 1.5 and 5.0 °C anomalies, before and after 3 and 11 weeks from the release of an artificial warm water plume. MHWs enhanced organic loads (by >100%), with larger effects in the short-term under the highest temperature anomaly. Phytopigment contents increased (by 50–90%) in the short term but decreased to initial values in the longer one. The autotrophic and lipid contents decreased with time (by 15–50% 53–79%, respectively), suggesting a drop in the nutritional quality of organic matter, along with a slowdown of its turnover. We contend that MHWs' intensification will affect not only species and communities but will also alter sediment biogeochemistry and, possibly, the energy transfer towards higher trophic levels. Since rising temperature (T) will enhance biochemical reactions and coastal marine sediments are hotspots of carbon cycling, marine heatwaves' (MHWs') intensification caused by climate change will affect coastal biogeochemistry. We investigated the effects of MHWs on sediment organic matter (OM) in a nearshore locality (NW Sardinia, Mediterranean Sea) receiving an artificial warm water plume generating T anomalies of 1.5–5.0 °C. Sediments were collected before and after 3 and 11 weeks from the initial plume release. Both MHWs influenced sedimentary OM quantity, composition, and degradation rates, with major effects associated with the highest T anomaly after 3 weeks. Both MHWs enhanced sedimentary OM contents, with larger effects associated with the highest T anomaly. Phytopigment contents increased in the short term but dropped to initial levels after 11 weeks, suggesting the occurrence of thermal adaptation or stress of microphytobenthos. In the longer term we observed a decrease in the nutritional quality of OM and a slowdown of its turnover mediated by extracellular enzymes, suggestive of a decreased ecosystem functioning. We anticipate that intensification of MHWs will affect benthic communities not only through direct effects on species tolerance but also by altering benthic biogeochemistry and the efficiency of energy transfer towards higher trophic levels. Background. Marine protected areas (MPAs) usually have both positive effects of protection for the fisheries' target species and indirect negative effects for sea urchins. Moreover, often in MPAs sea urchin human harvest is restricted, but allowed. This study is aimed at estimating the effect of human harvest of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus within MPAs, where fish exploitation is restricted and its density is already controlled by a higher natural predation risk. The prediction we formulated was that the lowest densities of commercial sea urchins would be found where human harvest is allowed and where the harvest is restricted, compared to where the harvest is forbidden. Methods. At this aim, a collaborative database gained across five MPAs in Sardinia (Western Mediterranean, Italy) and areas outside was gathered collecting sea urchin abundance and size data in a total of 106 sites at different degrees of sea urchin exploitation: no, restricted and unrestricted harvest sites (NH, RH and UH, respectively). Furthermore, as estimates made in past monitoring efforts (since 2005) were available for 75 of the sampled sites, for each of the different levels of exploitation, the rate of variation in the total sea urchin density was also estimated. Results. Results have highlighted that the lowest sea urchin total and commercial density was found in RH sites, likely for the cumulative effects of human harvest and natural predation. The overall rate of change in sea urchin density over time indicates that only NH conditions promoted the increase of sea urchin abundance and that current local management of the MPAs has driven towards an important regression of populations, by allowing the harvest. Overall, results suggest that complex mechanisms, including synergistic effects between natural biotic interactions and human pressures, may occur on sea urchin populations and the assessment of MPA effects on P. lividus populations would be crucial to guide management decisions on regulating harvest permits. Overall, the need to ban sea urchin harvest in the MPAs to avoid extreme reductions is encouraged, as inside the MPAs sea urchin populations are likely under natural predation pressures for the trophic upgrading. Mapping of coralligenous banks was carried out along the continental shelf of the northern and western margin of Sardinia Island (Italy, western Mediterranean Sea) in the context of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC). Coralligenous banks are bioconstructions produced by calcareous coralline algae. Seafloor mapping was carried out through multibeam echosounder surveys and video transects, using a Remote Operating Vehicles (ROV), in areas not formerly explored. A high-resolution digital model of the seabed (DTM) was obtained from multibeam data. A total surface of 436 km² of sparse patches of coralligenous banks was mapped in the depth range ~40-160 m. A final map of coralligenous habitat distributions along the western and northern continental shelf of Sardinia (scale 1:250,000) was produced. The base-map is formed by the shaded DTM of the seabed. The increase of marine heat waves (MHWs) occurrence is exacerbated in Mediterranean Sea and temperature resilience-enhancing strategies on key species, such as the seagrass Posidonia oceanica , need to be investigated. "Priming" describes a stimulus that prepares an organism for an improved response to upcoming environmental changes by triggering a memory that remains during a lag-phase. The aim of this study, conducted in Sardinia (Italy), was to investigate whether the development of thermo-primed P. oceanica seedlings is affected by a field simulated MHW depending on the duration of the lag-phase. After the thermo-priming stimulus, seedlings had a 0, 7 or 14 days lag-phase and after that, for each lag-phase group, half of the seedlings experienced a simulated MHW (the other half served as controls). Some other seedlings did not experience either the priming stimulus or the lag-phase. Results did not show any evidence of a memory triggered by the priming stimulus, but they highlighted the importance of an acclimation phase before the highest temperature: seedlings that experienced a gradual increase of temperature had a higher number of leaves and shorter leaf necrosis length compared to seedlings that had a lag-phase between two heat events. Regardless the priming stimulus, MHWs slowed down the development of the leaf and root length. Considering the increase of temperature fluctuations, testing different intensities of priming and different length of lag-phase is necessary to provide information about the adaptive success of the species. In a wide variety of habitats, including some heavily urbanised areas, the adaptability of populations of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) may depend on the social structure dynamics. Nonetheless, the way in which these adaptations take place is still poorly understood. In the present study we applied photo-identification techniques to investigate the social structure of the common bottlenose dolphin population inhabiting the Gulf of Alghero (Sardinia, Italy), analysing data recorded from 2008 to 2019. The social structure analysis showed a division of the entire population into five different communities and the presence of non-random associations, while there was no evidence of segregation between sexes. Furthermore, results highlighted an important change in social structure through time, likely due to a reduction in fish farm activity since 2015. The division of the population into different communities, the presence of segregation based on the foraging strategy (inside or outside the fish farm area) and the social network measures were evaluated by analysing independently the two datasets: the intense and low farm activity periods: 2008-2014 and 2015-2020, respectively. Segregation among individuals belonging to the same foraging strategy class was found only in the earlier period, and the composition of the four communities was consistent with this result. Our study improves the knowledge about bottlenose dolphin adaptation, as a lower complexity in social structure was linked to a reduction in anthropogenic food availability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is commercially exploited in many European countries. In recent years, however, its stocks have shown a large reduction in several regions because of overfishing. This paper reports the effects of harvesting on P. lividus population structure in shallow rocky reefs from a central-western Mediterranean area where this activity is intensively practiced. Density, size (test diam), and biomass of sea urchin were assessed in October 2004 (just before the fishing season) and in May 2005 (immediately after the fishing season) at two locations where intense P. lividus harvest occurs and at two controls within an adjacent Marine Protected Area (MPA) where P. lividus harvest is prohibited. Density, size, and average biomass of P. lividus were significantly higher at the protected areas than at the exploited ones. In particular, large-sized specimens (test diam >5 cm) were notably less abundant at the fished locations; however, very similar results were detected for both the periods examined (i.e., before and after the fishing season), suggesting that effects of pressing activity of harvest through the past years may have produced effects much more evident than those attributable to the single fishing season. These results reveal the existence of a heavy-fishing impact on P. lividus in northwestern Sardinia and the urgent need of regulating its harvesting to prevent severe direct effects on its populations. The Mediterranean island of Sardinia is well known for high levels of vascular plant diversity and endemism, but little is known about its microbial diversity. Under the hypothesis that Fusarium species would show similarly high diversity, we estimated variability in Fusarium species composition among 10 sites around the island. Markers previously adopted for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) were used to determine multilocus DNA sequence haplotypes for 263 Fusarium isolates. In addition portions of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha and second largest RNA polymerase subunit genes were sequenced for all isolates. The intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene repeat was sequenced for members of the F. oxysporum species complex (FOSC), and a portion of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene repeat comprising the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and part of the large nuclear ribosomal RNA subunit was sequenced for members of the F. solani species complex (FSSC). Seventy-three multilocus haplotypes were identified among the 263 isolates typed, of which 48 represented FOSC and FSSC. Thirty-seven of 48 FOSC two-locus and FSSC three-locus haplotypes had not been observed previously. The 38 non-FOSC/FSSC fusaria comprised 25 haplotypes distributed among 10 species, five of which appear to represent novel, phylogenetically distinct species. In general newly discovered haplotypes were restricted to one or a few sites. All FSSC isolates represented new haplotypes in phylogenetic species FSSC 5 and 9, which differ from the phylogenetic species dominant in soils worldwide. No obvious correlations were found between haplo-type diversity and geospatial or habitat distribution. Overall these results indicate a high degree of Fusarium genetic diversity on multiple geographic scales within Sardinia. These results contrast with recent work showing that common, cosmopolitan species dominate Sardinia's Trichoderma biodiversity. Summary: The Mediterranean Basin, possessing 4.3% of all plants of the world, is considered one of the biodiversity hotspots at global scale. Several forms of impact on biodiversity are currently taking place in European Mediterranean countries as a result of the abandonment of traditional extensive production systems in areas of particular value for nature conservation. In this study we investigated the effects of the cessation of agro-sylvo-pastoral activities on Centaurea horrida Badarò, a very rare sea-cliff plant, endemic to North-Western Sardinia (Italy) and listed by the IUCN as vulnerable. In a similar way to other cliff species, Centaurea horrida can expand its range when unsuitable surrounding habitats are disturbed. The analysis of aerial photos indicates that about 88.5% of a surface previously occupied by a Centaurea horrida dwarf community was replaced by juniper scrub over a 50-year period. In the juniper scrub Centaurea horrida density is at present 1/5 of that observed in the dwarf community. The spatial distribution of Centaurea horrida individuals was not random but concentrated in open microhabitats, more abundant in the dwarf community than in the juniper scrub. Juveniles were found mainly on bare soil; this being the only microhabitat where seedling emergence may occur. Furthermore, disturbance had a positive effect on the survival rates of saplings. Our data show that Centaurea horrida is a species that is linked to the initial stages of secondary succession, when patches of bare soil are available, but it is non-competitive with the late-succession species of the juniper scrub. Active management practices to maintain Centaurea horrida populations are therefore proposed and discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, two benthic habitats have been investigated in a fully protected site and two control sites at the Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo marine protected area (MPA) (NE Sardinia). Overall, a protection effect on the benthic assemblages was highlighted in the shallow subtidal (5m deep) rather than at intertidal algal turf habitat. Structure of assemblages at the shallow subtidal habitat is different in the fully protected site vs. controls, while this was not true for the intertidal habitat. At the subtidal, this finding is probably linked to indirect effects due to an increase of consumers in the protected site (e.g., sea urchins), while the lack of direct impacts in the intertidal at control sites is indicative of very similar assemblages. Cover of encrusting algae was significantly higher at the subtidal protected site suggesting a possible higher grazing pressure. Possible causes underlying the inconsistency of results obtained between habitats include the possibility that trophic cascade effects have a different influence at different heights on the shore. The need to estimate the interconnection among benthic habitats through trophic links is also highlighted to provide an estimate of the vulnerability to protection of various habitats. Bottlenose dolphin communication has been studied extensively. Nevertheless, the combined effect of several variables on whistle structure has yet to be clearly understood. Here, we investigated the influence of underwater noise, boat presence, behaviour, group size and calf presence on the whistles of a small population of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Surface behaviour and acoustic data were collected in Sardinia (Italy-Western Mediterranean Sea) between 2015 and 2017. Whistle frequency parameters (minimum, maximum, start, end frequencies and frequency range), duration, number of inflection points and number of harmonics were correlated with the ambient noise levels recorded prior to the whistle display and to behavioural and social factors by means of GAM models. Whistle frequencies varied as a function of the interaction between noise and boat presence, mainly when the noise increased at lower frequencies. Dolphin whistles also varied according to group size, which was further affected by the presence of calves, and behaviours characterised by high levels of arousal such as feeding. The study provides sufficient evidence to support that multiple factors need to be considered when investigating whistle structure as the species is capable of adopting different strategies depending on environmental, social and behavioural context. Finally, this data indicates that communication within a small population of bottlenose dolphins is vulnerable to acoustic pollution, thereby highlighting the need for further investigation into the effects of different noises on whistle structure, as well as the consistency of patterns across different populations. Significance statement: Exploring a dolphin's ability to adapt its communication to environmental context is crucial to understanding the consequences of ocean noise increase, especially in highly anthroposised areas such as the Mediterranean Sea. This is one of the few studies that investigate how noise and boat traffic affect bottlenose dolphin whistles whilst considering the concomitant effect of other variables such as behaviour, group size and composition. We demonstrated that dolphins vary their whistles as a function of increasing noise and boat presence, group size and calf presence, and during specific behaviour which requires intense contact between individuals. Abstract: In the Mediterranean region, herbivory appears to be a factor controlling the production of the endemic species Posidonia oceanica, which is mainly due to two main macroherbivores: the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, and the sparid fish Sarpa salpa. In this context the present study is a contribution in clarifying herbivory on P. oceanica by testing: 1) whether the abundance of grazing marks of the two herbivores is variable across different spatial scales, 2) whether spatial variation of P. lividus grazing marks and its density is consistent, 3) whether there is a dependence of the number of P. lividus grazing marks on its density, 4) whether the grazing of both macroherbivores, P. lividus and S. salpa, involves the entire leaf length, and 5) whether there is a dependence of the number of P. lividus grazing marks on the number of S. salpa grazing bites. With this aim, the density of Paracentrotus lividus was estimated at six different locations around the Gulf of Alghero (Northwestern Sardinia, Italy). At each location, two areas were considered and within each area the number of P. lividus individuals was counted in 10 plots of dimensions 1×1m each. The abundance of P. lividus and Sarpa salpa grazing marks was estimated on two shoots harvested at random in each plot. The number of P. lividus individuals varied greatly among the locations and between areas within each location. A sigmoid function was found to better describe the relation between P. lividus density and the number of its grazing marks. The distance class-frequency distribution of P. lividus grazing marks from the leaf base showed that this herbivore affected the length of the Posidonia oceanica leaf for about 700mm, and that the attacks were concentrated at the lower portion of the leaf near the base. Conversely, a larger number of the S. salpa grazing bites were more frequently seen on the higher portions of the leaves, although attacks were found along the entire length. The reported data suggest that the two herbivores share the seagrass by partitioning the portions of the leaf they consume. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Estimating spatial patterns of variability in coastal marine priority habitats may allow to plan monitoring programs and impact evaluation studies and to optimize sampling designs in environmental investigations. In this study the spatial variability of the vertical distribution (18 m, 23 m, 28 m, 33 m, and 38 m of depth) of coralligenous cliff assemblages was estimated in three marine biogeographic areas of the Mediterranean Sea: the Sardinia Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Bonifacio Strait. Sampling sites were selected in the West, North, and East coast of Sardinia, all in pristine conditions (far from any anthropogenic sources of influence and in highly oligothrophic water). Important variations among areas in the vertical zonation of the coralligenous cliffs have emerged, especially at the shallower depths, and the dominant taxa have been highlighted. Despite these unconsistencies, a common increase in the number of taxa/groups per sample was found with depth. Thermal environment and hydrodynamics have been discussed as the most likely important drivers of such variability. Overall, these data support the hypothesis that coralligenous cliff assemblages unaffected by local anthropogenic disturbance may be relevantly different in structure and indicate that the lack of gorgonians and bryozoans (commonly used as ecological indicators) is not necessarily a sign of local human impact, as it may be the result of biogeographic patterns. Sounds are particularly important for animals that live in complex social communities. In this study, we assessed the communication calls (whistles) that common bottlenose dolphins emit during their foraging activities in the absence and presence of motor boats and during dolphin depredation on trawlers, in Alghero (Sardinia, Italy) and Cres-Lošinj Archipelago (Croatia). The latter behaviour involves foraging on concentrated food sources during very noisy human activity and may require the emission of distinctive whistles. Thus, we investigated if whistle structure, in terms of frequency and time parameters, changes depending on these three foraging contexts. In Sardinia, during foraging in interaction with trawlers, whistles differed from those emitted during the other foraging contexts. Conversely, in Cres-Lošinj, significant variations in whistles were found to be related mainly to the presence of motor boats. This study represents the first report on how two dolphin populations adopt different acoustic tactics in the context of similar foraging behaviour. By investigating the effects of opportunistic foraging on acoustic repertoires, we provide new findings on the acoustic adaptation of dolphins to local conditions and contribute to understanding the relationships between dolphins and human activities, such as fishing and boat traffic.
