The current study investigates the impact of an educational program based on cognitive neuroscience on developing reading comprehension skills among second-grade students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To achieve this objective, the researchers employed a quasi-experimental design, selecting a sample of 59 students from Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman Al Saud School for Girls and AlMadinah Al-Jamia Educational School for Boys, both under the supervision of the Education Directorate in Najran region. The sample was divided into two groups: 30 students in the experimental group and 29 in the control group. The researchers developed two instruments: a cognitive neuroscience-based educational program and a written test. After ensuring their validity and reliability, these instruments were administered to the study participants. The results revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental group, while no significant differences were found based on gender or the interaction between gender and group. In light of the results, the researchers provided a set of recommendations.

This research study analyzes the target needs of EFL female Saudi students to choose EFL as their specialization. The population of the research is the female students enrolled in Bachelors in English program, at the Department of English Language and Translation, Qassim University Saudi Arabia. Adapting the Hutchinson and Waters model of Needs Analysis, the study covers the Target needs (i.e., Necessities, Lacks and Wants) and the Learning needs. It aims to suggest certain amendments in the curriculum on the basis of needs analysis. The sample for study consisted of 150 students, the data was collected through questionnaire and analyzed by using SPSS. Overall assessment of the data shows that the learners show their weakness in oral skills (i.e., Listening and Speaking) as compared to literary skills (i.e., Reading and Writing). Students have shown their preference for the incorporation of practical activities and media based teaching material in their syllabus.

The Aja and Salma mountains in the Hail region are home to a variety of indigenous wild plants, some of which are used in Bedouin folk medicine to treat various ailments. The purpose of the current study was to unveil the chemical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Fagonia indica (Showeka) grown widely in these mountains, as data on the biological activities of this plant in this remote area are scarce. XRF spectrometry indicated the presence of some essential elements, which were in the order of Ca > S > K > AL > CL > Si > P > Fe > Mg > Na > Ti > Sr > Zn > Mn. Qualitative chemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, terpenes, flavonoids, tannins, phenols and cardiac glycosides in the methanolic extract (80% v/v). GC–MS showed the presence of 2-chloropropanoic acid 18.5%, tetrahydro-2-methylfuran 20.1%, tridecanoic acid 12-methyl-, methyl ester 2.2%, hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester 8.6%, methyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate 13.4%, methyl linoleate 7.0%, petroselinic acid methyl ester 15%, erucylamide 6.7% and diosgenin 8.5%. Total phenols, total tannins, flavonoids, DPPH, reducing power, -carotene and ABTS IC50 (mg/mL) scavenging activity were used to measure the antioxidant capabilities of Fagonia indica, which exhibited prominent antioxidant properties at low concentrations when compared to ascorbic acid, butylate hydroxytoluene and beta-carotene. The antibacterial investigation revealed significant inhibitory effects against Bacillus subtilis MTCC121 and Pseudomona aeruginosa MTCC 741 with inhibition zones of 15.00 ± 1.5 and 12.0 ± 1.0 mm, respectively. The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) ranged between 125 to 500 μg/mL. The MBC/MIC ratio indicated possible bactericidal efficacy against Bacillus subtilis and bacteriostatic activity against Pseudomona aeruginosa. Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated intestinal disease caused by a hypersensitivity to gluten in genetically susceptible people. The most frequent type of anemia in the world is iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), which is also thought to be the most typical extra intestinal symptom of celiac disease. Aim: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of CD in patients with unexplained refractory IDA by using anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) antibodies or by endoscopic biopsy in North-Western Saudi Arabia (Hail Province) Design and Methods: This is a cross-sectional discipline that was done at the King Salman Specialist Hospital, Hail, Saudi Arabia during the period from January 2019 to December 2021. We evaluated two thousand four hundred adult Saudi patients with IDA for etiology. Of those, 270 patients (11.25%) were found to have refractory IDA. IgA and IgG tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibodies were tested in sera from patients with IDA of unknown cause using an ELISA test. Intestinal endoscopic biopsies were taken from the second part of the duodenum in these patients. Histopathologic examination results of patients categorized based on Marsh classification. Results: In 16 patients (5.9%) with refractory IDA, anti-tTG antibodies were found to be positive; histopathologic evidence of CD was seen in 15 patients (5.5%). The mean age of the diagnosed patients was 28.6 ± 8.1 years and all of them were females. Conclusions: Celiac disease was more common in patients with refractory iron deficient anemia. Size-specific dose estimate (SSDE), which can be calculated by measuring the effective diameter (D e) or water equivalent diameter (D w) of the patient, is one of the recent approaches for verifying the individual doses during computer tomography (CT) examinations. This work aimed to compare the D w estimated by the AutoWED tool and IndoseCT software and to investigate CT axial (ARH) and paediatric head (PH) protocols used in southern Saudi Arabia to calculate the dose received by paediatric patients using metrics of volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and SSDE. The distribution between the ARH and PH protocols was 57.8 and 42.2%, respectively. There was no significant difference in D w values between the AutoWED tool and the IndoseCT program (0.13%). Including CT table or other objects during estimation of D w can lead to variation up to 11.4%. The impact of selecting IndoseCT options to identify the border of the patient may be part of the explanation for these variations. A strong linear relationship was obtained between D e and D w in paediatric head size (R 2 = 0.96). Using IndoseCT, for 0–1.5, 1.5–5 and 5.0–18 age groups (years), the D w was found to be 13.2, 15.3 and 16.8 cm, respectively. The SSDE for the PH protocol was substantially lower than that of the ARH protocol. Several studies have investigated palm trees' microbiota infected with red palm weevil (RPW) (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), the major pest of palm trees. This study compared the microbial communities of infected and uninfected palm trees in the Hail region, Northern Saudi Arabia, determined by high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing by Illumina MiSeq. The results indicated that taxonomic diversity variation was higher for infected tree trunk than the healthy tree trunk. Soil samples from the vicinity of healthy and infected trees did not have a significant variation in bacterial diversity. Myxococcota, Acidobacteriota, and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in RPW-infected tree trunk, and Pseudomonadaceae was the most prominent family. The objective of this study is to estimate the annual effective dose for cardiologists and nurses by measuring Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) during cardiac catheterization procedures. A total of 16 staffs members were working in interventional cardiology during 1 year at a tertiary hospital. The occupational dose was measured using calibrated thermo-luminescent dosemeters (TLD-100, LiF:Mg,Ti). The overall mean and range of the annual Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) (mSv) for cardiologists were 3.7 (0.13–14.5) and 3.2 (0.21–14.7), respectively. Cardiologists were frequently exposed to higher doses compared with nurses and technologists. The exposure showed wide variations, which depend on occupation and workload. Staff is adhered to radiation protection guidelines regarding shielding the trunk, thyroid shield, thus appropriately protected. Worldwide, thyroid cancer accounts for some 10% of total cancer incidence, most markedly for females. Thyroid cancer radiotherapy, typically using 131I (T1/2 8.02 days; β− max energy 606 keV, branching ratio 89.9%), is widely adopted as an adjunct to surgery or to treat inoperable cancer and hyperthyroidism. With staff potentially receiving significant doses during source preparation and administration, radiation protection and safety assessment are required in ensuring practice complies with international guidelines. The present study, concerning a total of 206 patient radioiodine therapies carried out at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center over a 6-month period, seeks to evaluate patient and occupational exposures during hospitalization, measuring ambient doses and estimating radiation risk. Using calibrated survey meters, patient exposure dose-rate estimates were obtained at a distance of 30-, 100- and 300 cm from the neck region of each patient. Occupational and ambient doses were measured using calibrated thermoluminescent dosimeters. The mean and range of administered activity (AA, in MBq) for the thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism treatment groups were 4244 ± 2021 (1669–8066), 1507.9 ± 324.1 (977.9–1836.9), respectively. The mean annual occupational doses were 1.2 mSv, that for ambient doses outside of the isolation room corridors were found to be 0.2 mSv, while ambient doses at the nursing station were below the lower limit of detection. Exposures to staff from patients being treated for thyroid cancer were less compared to hyperthyroidism patients. With a well-defined protocol, also complying with international safety requirements, occupational exposures were found to be relatively high, greater than most reported in previous studies. Knowledge of clay minerals composition can be used to understand paleoenvironmental and/or paleoclimatic conditions, particularly for soils derived from volcanic parent materials that were subjected to diverse climatic conditions during pedogenesis. In this study, the clay minerals composition in soils developed from basaltic parent materials during the Cenozoic (mostly during the Early Miocene to Early Pleistocene) in the harrats region of the Arabian Shield in Saudi Arabia were investigated. Forty-seven clay samples were examined using selective dissolution analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to obtain a better understanding of the clay minerals developed in basaltic parent materials, particularly under a dry-hot environment. The XRD results revealed that the clay mineralogy was dominated by smectite, kaolin (kaolinite/halloysite), and interstratified vermiculite–chlorite (Vm–Ch), with mica, pseudo-chlorite, palygorskite, and Ca–zeolites as minor components. The TEM provided strong evidence for the presence of allophane and imogolite, which is in line with numerous previous studies on soils formed from basaltic parent materials. The existence of poorly-crystalline minerals in these soils was strongly supported by the selective dissolution analysis results. The combined influence of paleoclimates and parent material is evidenced in the clay minerals in the studied soils. The formation of smectite, Vm–Ch, and chlorite minerals in the harrats soils could be attributed to the simultaneous effect of temperate paleoclimates that dominated the Pliocene and the wet transition periods that occurred through the Pleistocene into the mid-Holocene, while the minor palygorskite and Ca–zeolites could be related to the dry conditions that started in the late-Holocene and persist to the present day. Additional studies regarding the clay mineral assemblages in similar geoenvironmental settings are highly recommend and should account for paleoclimatic conditions to provide a better understanding of the relationship between clay minerals and paleoclimates. Background: To mitigate the risk of stent thrombosis, patients treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are administered dual anti-platelet therapy comprising aspirin and a platelet P2Y12 receptor inhibitor. Clopidogrel is a prodrug requiring activation by the cytochrome P450 enzyme, CYP2C19. In Saudi Arabia, it has been reported that approximately 26% of the population carries CYP2C19*2 and/or *3 loss-of-function polymorphisms in addition to a high prevalence of CVD.Methods: This prospective (April 2013-December 2020) parallel assignment clinical trial focuses on ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) patient outcomes. The clinical trial includes 1500 STEMI patients from two hospitals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Patients are assigned to one of two groups; the control arm receives conventional therapy with clopidogrel, while in the active arm the Spartan RX CYP2C19 assay is used to determine the *2 genotype. Carriers of a CYP2C19*2 loss-of-function allele receive prasugrel or ticagrelor, while non-carriers are treated with clopidogrel. Follow-up is one year after primary PCI. The primary end point is the number of patients who develop an adverse major cardiovascular event, including recurrent MI, non-fatal stroke, cardiovascular death, or major bleeding one year after PCI.Discussion: The risk of stent thrombosis in PCI patients is usually reduced by dual anti-platelet therapy, comprising aspirin and a P2Y12 inhibitor, such as clopidogrel. However, clopidogrel requires activation by the cytochrome P450 enzyme, CYP2C19. Approximately 20% of the population are unable to activate clopidogrel as they possess the CYP2C19*2 loss-of function (LoF) allele. The primary goal of this trial is to study the benefits of treating only those patients that cannot activate clopidogrel with an alternative that has shown to be a more effective platelet inhibitor and does not require bioactivation by the cytochrome P450 enzyme. This study aims to answer the question of how Saudi's Al-Yaum online newspaper covers the crime news, from Jan - Dec 2018. The descriptive method is used, and data is collected through a structured content analysis sheet. 24 versions represent a systematic random sample was analyzed. The results were: Saudi newspapers cover mere internal crime news, the most types of the crime news were cover was the murder, assault, sale of illegal beverages and drugs, and the least published was news dealing with topics of felonious assault, interfering with an officer, contempt of court, and criminal libel. [Display omitted] • Spatial distribution of eight heavy metals (HMs) were studied in arid harrats soils. • Landsat 8/9 OLI single-monthly multi-year synthetic indexes were used for HMs mapping. • Stepwise multiple regression (SMLR) and random forest (RF) coupled 52 covariates used for HMs modelling. • The SMLR had better performance than RF: R 2 = 0.38–0.54;17–40, NRMSE = 18–26 %; 19–27 %, respectively. • The studied HMs derived from lithologic origins, thus considered background levels. Characterizing the background content and source(s) of heavy metals (HMs) is important for the evaluation of potential pollution in soils. Samples were collected from the topsoil layers (0.3 m) of 19 soil pedons in the harrats arid region in Saudi Arabia, and the concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were analyzed. Stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and random forest (RF) were used to model and digitally map the studied HMs concentrations and establish their background levels using fifty-two environmental covariates (ECOVs) extracted from time series Landsat 8/9 OLI and digital elevation models. The values of the studied HMs ranged from 0.95 to 22.2 mg kg−1 (Co), 0.8 to 58.8 mg kg−1 (Cr), 1.65 to 34 mg kg−1 (Cu), 2,206 to 25,970 mg kg−1 (Fe), 33.5 to 788 mg kg−1 (Mn), 1.8 to 134.7 mg kg−1 (Ni), 2.25 to 12.5 mg kg−1 (Pb), and 2.1 to 55.9 mg kg−1 (Zn) with a coefficient of variation that ranged between 27.3 % (Pb) and 63.7 % (Ni). These are all very low compared to results from anthropogenically affected areas near the border of the harrats region, precisely mining (i.e., Mahad AD'Dahab) and industrial (i.e., Riyadh and Jubail) areas as well as to the common average ranges for these HMs in soil. The model's predictions and available observations were compared with statistics from 5-fold cross-validation with 3 repetitions. Findings revealed that mean R 2 varied between 0.38 (Zn) and 0.54 (Cu) with normalized root mean square errors (NRMSEs) between 18.53 % (Zn) and 26.03 % (Cr) for SMLR, which better than RF that yielded mean R 2 that ranged from 0.17 (Ni) to 0.40 (Cu) with NRMSEs between 19.15 % (Co) and 27.76 % (Mn). The studied HMs are considered background concentrations in the area, and therefore are important for any future environmental pollution/monitoring studies. Our study demonstrated the capacity of SMLR to use available ECOVs to predict HMs and generate background levels at a large scale in specific locations. Additionally, this study investigated the relationships between the factors affecting HMs accumulation in natural surface soil in arid regions. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of uncorrected refractive errors (URE) among children 3-10 years and to affirm the necessity of a national school-based visual screening program for school-aged children. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Medina, Saudi Arabia in 2015. Children were selected through a multistage stratified random sampling from 8 kindergarten and 8 primary schools. Those included were screened to diagnose UREs using a visual acuity chart and an auto refractometer according to American guidelines. The prevalence and types of UREs were estimated. Results: Of the 2121 children enumerated, 1893 were examined, yielding a response rate of 89.3%. The prevalence of UREs was 34.9% (95% CI = 32.8%-37.1%), with significant differences in different age groups. The prevalence of astigmatism (25.3%) was higher compared to that of anisometropia (7.4%), hypermetropia (1.5%), and myopia (0.7%). Risk of uncorrected refractive error was positively associated with age, and this was noted in astigmatism, myopia, and anisometropia. In addition, the risk of hypermetropia was associated with boys and that of myopia was associated with girls. Conclusions: The prevalence of UREs, particularly astigmatism, was high among children aged 3-10 years in Medina, with significant age differences. Vision screening programs targeting kindergarten and primary schoolchildren are crucial to lessen the risk of preventable visual impairment due to UREs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was designed to investigate the successive effects of the early Pleistocene subhumid and early to middle Holocene semi-arid paleoclimates and late Holocene to present day arid/hyperarid conditions on pedogenesis and evolution in Harrat Ithnayn volcano in the Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia. The investigations were conducted using pedological macro and micro-features, physicochemical characteristics, elemental geochemistry, weathering indices and mineralogical analyses for light and heavy sand and clay fractions. The targeted soils developed in a subhumid paleoclimate and are classified as vitric Andisols, which are little to moderately weathered. Subhumid climate effects were evident through the presence of pedogenic Fe (crystalline oxides, Fe d = 25 to 58 g kg─1), fairly high Fe o /Fe d (0.24 to 0.87), and the predominance of hydroxy-Al smectite and kaolinite. Residual primary minerals and modern arid conditions simultaneously led to accumulation of secondary salts and carbonates. Exchangeable Ca and Mg pools contributed 21–56 % of total Ca and Mg contents, while exchangeable K contributed only up to 4 %. Soil processes thus involved andisolization, salinization, and calcification. Background: The present study was undertaken towards the development of SSR markers and assessing genetic relationships among 32 date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) representing common cultivars grown in different geographical regions in Saudi Arabia. Results: Ninety-three novel simple sequence repeat markers were developed and screened for their ability to detect polymorphism in date palm. Around 71% of genomic SSRs were dinucleotide, 25% tri, 3% tetra and 1% penta nucleotide motives. Twenty-two primers generated a total of 91 alleles with a mean of 4.14 alleles per locus and 100% polymorphism percentage. A 0.595 average polymorphic information content and 0.662 primer discrimination power values were recorded. The expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.676 and 0.763 respectively. Pair-wise similarity values ranged from 0.06 to 0.89 and the overall cultivars averaged 0.41. The UPGMA cluster analysis recovered by principal coordinate analysis illustrated that cultivars tend to group according to their class of maturity, region of cultivation, and fruit color. Analysis of molecular variations (AMOVA) revealed that genetic variation among and within cultivars were 27% and 73%, respectively according to geographical distribution of cultivars. Conclusions: The developed microsatellite markers are additional values to date palm characterization tools that can be used by researchers in population genetics, cultivar identification as well as genetic resource exploration and management. The tested cultivars exhibited a significant amount of genetic diversity and could be suitable for successful breeding program. Background: Implant dentistry education has been introduced only recently in Saudi Arabian university dental schools and there is only limited data about the same. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the current status of undergraduate dental implant (DI) education in Saudi Arabian universities. Materials and Methods: A two-part questionnaire-based study was conducted in Saudi Arabian university dental schools targeted toward program directors of undergraduate implant education to assess the quantity and quality of implant education being integrated into the curriculum. In addition, interns were asked to assess the degree of exposure to implant dentistry and their satisfaction regarding implant dentistry education. Results: Five program directors (83.3%) and 195 interns (82.9%) responded to the questionnaires. Implant dentistry was taught to the undergraduate students in multidisciplinary departments with teaching hours ranging from 22 to 30 h. Only three schools exposed students to laboratory (workshop) or clinical training. There seemed to be an agreement among the program directors in respect of the didactic contents. Majority of the interns reportedly acquired knowledge regarding implant dentistry based on theoretical (96.1%), laboratory (33.5%) and/or clinical (30%) training. While 50% of the interns agreed acquiring knowledge by assisting and observing DI procedures, only 52.8% of the interns expressed satisfaction regarding implant dentistry training obtained during their undergraduate period. Conclusion: The present study revealed the variability in undergraduate implant dentistry education offered at Saudi Arabian dental schools. To optimize the undergraduate implant dentistry education and to produce competent dentists, learning guidelines for such courses should be developed and implemented by competent authorities. Morphological, nutritional and molecular analyses were carried out to assess genetic diversity among 35 introduced lentil genotypes (Lens culinaris Medik.). The genotypes exhibited significant differences for their field parameters and some of them showed noticeable superiority. The nutritional and proximate analysis showed that some genotypes were excellent sources of proteins, essential amino acids, minerals, anti-oxidants, total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) and hence, highlights lentil nutritional and medicinal potential. Sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and amplified fragments length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to estimate the genetic variability at the molecular level. The existence of a considerable amount of genetic diversity among the tested lentil genotypes was also proven at the molecular level. A total of 2894 polymorphic SRAP and 1625 AFLP loci were successfully amplified using six SRAP and four AFLP primer pair combinations. Polymorphism information content (PIC) values for SRAP and AFLP markers were higher than 0.8, indicating the power and higher resolution of those marker systems in detecting molecular diversity. UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetic average) cluster analysis based on molecular data revealed large number of sub clusters among genotypes, indicating high diversity levels. The data presented here showed that FLIP2009-64L and FLIP2009-69L could be used as a significant source of yield, total protein, essential amino acids, and antioxidant properties. The results suggest potential lentil cultivation in the central region of Saudi Arabia for its nutritional and medicinal properties, as well as sustainable soil fertility crop. This study at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Jordan investigated and evaluated students' attitudes and opinions after attempting a dental objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) for the first time. The OSCE consisted of sixty-seven stations for fourth-year dental students. After the exam, students were asked to voluntarily complete a questionnaire designed to evaluate their attitudes and opinions about the exam. Of the 134 students who participated in the OSCE, 93.2 percent completed the questionnaire; 43.4 percent said they found the exam difficult and 56.6 percent found it easy (p=0.147). Seventy percent reported that the exam was objective, while 30 percent did not (p<0.001); 65.5 percent indicated that it was a better test than traditional patient-based tests, whereas 34.5 percent did not (p<0.001). Sixty-eight percent stated that there were too many stations, while 30.9 percent stated the number of stations was appropriate and 0.8 percent stated there were too few (p<0.001). Of these respondents, 75.6 percent reported the exam was organized, whereas 21.1 percent said the exam was not very well organized and 3.3 percent said the exam was not organized at all (p<0.001). Overall, the students responded that the OSCE was able to test their clinical judgment and skills and it was a better method for evaluating their clinical skills; most preferred to have such tests in the future. Although the students reported the exam had too many stations, they perceived that it was well organized and that the time allocated for each station was appropriate. OBJECTIVE: To identify the predictors that lead to cigarette smoking among high school students by utilizing the global youth tobacco survey in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among high school students (grades 10-12) in Riyadh, KSA, between April 24, 2010, and June 16, 2010. RESULTS: The response rate of the students was 92.17%. The percentage of high school students who had previously smoked cigarettes, even just 1-2 puffs, was 43.3% overall. This behavior was more common among male students (56.4%) than females (31.3%). The prevalence of students who reported that they are currently smoking at least one cigarette in the past 30 days was 19.5% (31.3% and 8.9% for males and females, respectively). "Ever smoked" status was associated with male gender (OR = 2.88, confidence interval [CI]: 2.28-3.63), parent smoking (OR = 1.70, CI: 1.25-2.30) or other member of the household smoking (OR = 2.11, CI: 1.59-2.81) who smoked, closest friends who smoked (OR = 8.17, CI: 5.56-12.00), and lack of refusal to sell cigarettes (OR = 5.68, CI: 2.09-15.48). OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and characteristics of cigarette smoking among secondary school students (16- to 18-year-old boys and girls) in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: We applied a standard two-stage, cross-sectional study design. Secondary schools for both boys and girls in Riyadh city were randomly selected using a cluster sampling method. We used the global youth tobacco survey (GYTS) tool to achieve our objectives. RESULTS: Among 1272 students (606 boys and 666 girls), the prevalence of those ever smoked cigarettes was 42.8% (55.6% of boys and 31.4% of girls). The prevalence of current smoking was 19.5% (31.2% of boys and 8.9% of girls). Despite the fact that the majority of students think smoking is harmful, most do not wish to stop smoking, and they had not tried to stop in the past year. Cigarette smoking is significantly associated with the male gender, having friends who smoke, and having parents who smoke, but is not significantly associated with the type of school attended. CONCLUSION: Smoking prevalence among secondary schools students in Saudi Arabia is high and alarming. Computed tomography (CT) frequency is approximately 11% of medical radiological procedures. Nevertheless, CT examinations contribute up to 70% collective doses. CT procedures carried out in pediatric patients represent 33% of CT procedures. This study aimed to assess pediatric doses during chest and abdomen procedures and estimated the projected radiogenic risk. In total, 83 pediatric were divided into four groups, according to their age (years). The patients were ≤six months, six months - ≤3 years, 4 - ≤ 6 years and, 7 - ≤ 15 years. The mean and range of DLP (mGy.cm) and CTDIvol (mGy) for pediatric CT chest were 42 (33–52) and 2 (1.9–2.2), respectively. The mean and range of DLP (mGy.cm) and CTDIvol (mGy) for pediatric CT abdomen pelvic region were 116 (105–129) and 3.8 (3.7–3.9), in that order. Even though pediatric' radiation doses are below the published diagnostic reference levels (DRL), additional dose reduction is required and achievable if the imaging protocol is adjusted according to the child size. • Pediatric doses during CT chest and abdomen procedures were assessed. • The variation in patients' doses was due to the scan length and child weight. • The Patients' radiation doses were lower than available published values. • The study has revealed an indispensable need for justified referring criteria. • Establishing an imaging protocol based on a pediatric subgroup is recommended. Quinoa cultivation has expanded from South America to many countries because of its wide adaptability and nutritional value. We evaluated 32 introduced quinoa genotypes using 17 qualitative and 11 quantitative traits under Saudi Arabia conditions during the 2018–2019 season. The quinoa genotypes showed considerable variation during the vegetative and maturity stages. Plant height values varied between 60 and 18 cm, and maturity ranged from 98 to 177 days. Leaf shapes were rhomboidal or triangular, with dentate or serrate margins. Green was the standard color for leaves and panicles at the flowering stage. The leaf granule colors were white, purple, and white-red. At 150 units of the Euclidean distance, the genotypes aggregated into four major groups based on their morphological traits. Twenty-one sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) primer pair combinations generated 75 amplified fragments (alleles), with a mean of 3.57 alleles per primer pair combination. Unweighted Pair-Group Method with Arithmetic means (UPGMA) clustering analysis showed that the quinoa genotypes were grouped based on origin or according to genetic background. Genotypes from South America presented higher mean values for the average number of alleles, Shannon index (0.411), gene diversity (0.271), and polymorphic percentage (83.95). Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that most of the genetic variation was because of differences within populations (86%). The interactive effects of paleoclimates and current conditions on pedogenesis in soils developed on volcanic parent materials (VPMs) is still poorly understood, particularly for soils in dry environments. Eight representative profiles located at Harrat Khaybar, Saudi Arabia and representing different landforms and positions including alluvial plain, alluvial fans, active slopes and lava field were investigated to better understand the effect of climate and basalt lithology on pedogenesis. The morphological and physicochemical soil properties and clay mineralogy composition were evaluated to identify the primary diagnostic horizons and therefore the pedogenic pathways that created the studied soils. All investigated profiles showed the influence of slope processes, resulting in heterogeneous soil profiles. The investigated soils can be described as polygenetic due to evidence of andisolization and the presence of salic and calcic diagnostic horizons. Andisolization implies development under a sub-humid paleoclimate during initial pedogenesis, while calcic and salic diagnostic horizons, are typical of the current arid conditions. As a result, about 63% of the investigated soils were classified as Torrands/Vitric Andosols and 37% as Salids/Solonchaks based on Soil Taxonomy and World Reference Base, respectively. Values of Al o , Fe o , and Si o ranged from 0.20 to 0.68%, 0.24 to 3.27%, and 0.23 to 1.03%, respectively, implying the presence of poorly-crystalline fine components (i.e., allophane and ferrihydrite). Vermiculite, kaolinite, and interstratified vermiculite-chlorite were abundant, with illite, palygorskite, and Ca-zeolites as minor crystalline minerals. A combination of paleo/present-climate influenced pedogenesis leading to andisolization and the coexistence of poorly/crystalline minerals and formation of salic and calcic diagnostic horizons. This study demonstrates that andic properties can persist in dry-hot environments, highlighting the critical role of paleo/modern climate interactions as an influential factor driving the pedogenic pathways of VPMs-derived soils. Background/Aim: Dyspepsia is a common gastrointestinal disorder and is the most common indication for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGIE). In recent years, it has been observed in several centers that there is a change in the causes of dyspepsia as revealed by UGIE. Our main objectives were: (1) To study the pattern of upper gastrointestinal pathology in patients with dyspepsia undergoing upper endoscopy; (2) Compare that with the pattern seen 10-15 years earlier in different areas of KSA. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of all UGI endoscopies performed at Aseer Central Hospital, Abha, Southern Saudi Arabia during the years 2005-2007 on patients above 13 years of age. Patients who underwent UGIE for reasons other than dyspepsia were excluded. The analysis was performed using the SPSS 14 statistical package. Results: A total of 1,607 patients underwent UGI endoscopy during the three-year study period (age range, 15-100). There were 907 males (56.4%) and 700 female (43.6%). Normal findings were reported on 215 patients (14%) and the majority had gastritis (676 = 42%), of whom 344 had gastritis with ulcer disease. Moreover, 242 patients (15%) had gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), with or without esophagitis or hiatus hernia. Also, a total of 243 patients had duodenal ulcer (DU) (15%) while only 12 had gastric ulcer (0.7%). Discussion and Conclusion: There is clear change in the frequency of UGIE lesions detected recently compared to a decade ago with an increasing prevalence of reflux esophagitis and hiatus hernia. This could be attributed to changes in lifestyle and dietary habits such as more consumption of fat and fast food, increased prevalence of obesity, and smoking. Saudi Arabia has many volcanoes and extensive basaltic lava fields known as harrats located along the western part of the Arabian Shield sub-parallel to the Red Sea. The soils developed on these volcanic materials have not yet been investigated. Forty representative soil profiles were selected from six harrats and their morphological and physicochemical properties as well as their mineralogical compositions were characterized using standard chemical, XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. The main objective of this study was to determine if the soils developed from basaltic rocks in the harrats of the Arabian Shield are Andisols. The results revealed that all representative profiles had volcanic glass content that ranged from 15 to 40%, P-retention capacity >35%, and acid oxalate extractable A1 o + 1/2 Fe o that ranged from 0.44 to 2.20%. The crystalline clay minerals were dominated by smectite, kaolin (kaolinite/halloysite), and mica (illite), whereas, chlorite-hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite (Ch-HIV), palygorskite, Ca-zeolites, and pseudo-chlorite were present as minor components. Small amounts of allophane, imogolite, and ferrihydrite made up the poorly-crystalline clay minerals. All representative profiles satisfied the criteria for andic soil properties, and were classified as Torrands due to the presence of an aridic soil moisture regime in the area. Paleoclimatic conditions that existed in the Arabian Peninsula over the last few thousand years are consistent with the formation of andic and/or vitric soil properties. Because of this, Andisols developed from pyroclastic parent materials and are now present in dry-hot conditions. Mammary glands or breasts are radiosensitive organs that makeup 12% of the body's overall radiation sensitivity. According to estimates, Saudi Arabia has a 27.3% overall cancer incidence rate for breast cancer. Recent studies reported that breasts get significant organ equivalent doses during diagnostic procedures with ionizing radiation, even though the breast is not the target organ. The objective of this work is to assess the effective and breast equivalent doses during positron emission tomography (PET)/Computed tomography (CT) imaging examinations. The effective and breast equivalent doses per PET/CT (GE PET/CT 710) examination were quantified using the amount of the injected radiopharmaceutical (MBq) (18F- fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)), and external doses from CT examinations. The average, standard deviation (SD) and range of examined patients' age (years) and body mass index ((BMI), kg/m2) were 58 ± 11 (39–76) and 30 ± 5 (20.7–43.1), respectively. Constant administered activity (AA, 185 MBq) and tube potential (120 kVp) were used for all patients. The average, SD, and range of the patients effective dose (mSv) from PET/CT (18F- FDG) examination was 8.0 ± 0.93 (7.0–10.0) and 2.075 ± 0.11 (1.91–2.29) in that order. Breast doses are comparable with previous studies during the PET/CT and mammographic examination. Occupational radiation exposure can occur due to various human activities, including the use of radiation in medicine. Occupationally exposed personnel surpassing 7.4 millions, and respresent the biggest single group of employees who are exposed to artificial radiation sources at work. This study compares the occupational radiation dose levels for 145 workers in four different hospitals located in the Aseer region in Saudi Arabia. The occupational exposure was quantified using thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD-100). The levels of annual occupational exposures in targeted hospitals were calculated and compared with the levels of the international atomic energy agency (IAEA) Safety Standards. An average yearly cumulative dose for the two consecutive years. The average, highest and lowest resulted occupational doses under examination in this work is 1.42, 3.9 mSv and 0.72 for workers in various diagnostic radiology procedures. The resulted annual effective dose were within the IAEA approved yearly dose limit for occupational exposure of workers over 18, which is 20 mSv. Nuclear medicine diagnostic procedures such as positron emission tomography (PET) scans and hybrid imaging using a combination of PET and computed tomography (CT), commonly referred to as PET-CT scanning. Hybrid imaging, which allows accurate visualization of internal anatomical structure and the consequent physiological processes simultaneously, is extensively used in oncology and other departments. Nevertheless, this exposes patients and medical personnel in such departments to significant doses of ionizing radiation, especially in hybrid imaging, where two sources of radiation (the radiopharmaceutical infusion and the CT scanner) are used. This necessitates strict compliance with international guidelines and regulations on radiation protection. Recent reports showed that occupational staff exposure might exceed the annual dose limits. This study evaluated occupational exposure associated with diagnostic hybrid PET-CT imaging and the consequent risks. Twenty medical personnel: 5 physicists, ten technologists, two medical doctors, and three nurses are included in this study. The assessment includes measuring occupational ambient doses using calibrated optical stimulating-luminescent dosimeters (OSL) (Al2O3:C). These badges were read using an automatic OSL reader. The results, displayed as (mean ± standard deviation): (range) of the effective dose (mSv) for the different personnel, can be summarized as follows(mean standard deviation and range). Physicists 0.72 ± 0.14 (0.49–0.83) mSv in 2019 and 0.67 ± 0.07 (0.59–0.78) in 2020; technologist 1.4 ± 0.96 (0–3.27) mSv in 2019 and 1.395 ± 1.27 (0.64–4.36) mSv; medical doctors 0.445 ± 0.42 (0.15–0.74) mSv in 2019 and 0.70 ± 0.04 (0.67–0.73) in 2020; and nurses 1.38 ± 0.25 (1.21–1.66) mSv in 2019 and 1.41 ± 0.17 (1.23–1.55) in 2020. The tube voltage of the scanner used in this study had a constant value of 120 kVp for all patients. Staff working in PET or PET-CT departments receive significant doses from the radiopharmaceuticals and the energetic gamma rays from the CT scanners. Hypoxic solid tumours have a poor prognosis and little curability when treated with radiation therapy. Consequently, evaluation of oxygen levels in solid tumours is required to increase the proportion of patients who experience treatment success. The three gamma annihilation of radioiodine −124 (124I) during positron emission tomography (PET) can be used to diagnose hypoxia in solid tumours. 124I is the focus of this study, which intends to evaluate its role in detecting hypoxia in samples with various oxygen concentrations. At King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH&RC) in Saudi Arabia, a system was set up to monitor the yield of the three gamma using High Purity Germanium (HPGe) radiation detectors. These detectors, operating under the same conditions as one another, were used to record the triple coincidence. 5.0 mL of water was treated with oxygen and nitrogen gases to produce oxygenated and deoxygenated samples. In measuring the relative three gamma to two gamma yield, the peak to valley and peak to peak methods were compared. The three gamma coincidence was increased by 23% in deoxygenated sample compared to oxygenated one. Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation of medical personnel is very common at radiology and nuclear medicine departments. Strict regulations and guidelines for the exposure of staff working in such departments were regulated by international authorities such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as well as national protocols. In order to reduce stochastic effects, for example, radiation induced carcinogenesis, the exposure of staff working at nuclear medicine department should be maintained at levels lower than 20 mSv per year or 100 mSv in five years. The objective of this study is to measure staff radiation dose at four radiology departments in the south region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Exposures received by a total of 106 staff working at the radiology department were monitored for two consecutive years using calibrated Thermoluminecnt dosimeters (LiF:Mg:Ti (TLD-100). Exposure was then quantified in terms of deep dose: Hp (10). The TLD signal was obtained using an automatic TLD reader (Harshaw 6600). The overall annual dose for staff was 1.4 ± 0.37 (0.67–8.74). The study revealed that the annual radiation exposure in the four-radiology department is below the annual dose limits. The current study was aimed to estimate the entrance surface air kerma (ESAK, mGy) for adult patients undergoing conventional radiography of Anteroposterior pelvis examination, and finally to establish a local diagnostic reference level (DRL). A total of 500 patients were exposed to diagnostic radiation in four hospitals (coded A, B, C, and D) in Taif and Kharaj city, Saudi Arabia, with different X-ray equipment specifications. Patient demographic data like age (y), body mass index (BMI) in kg/m2 as well as exposure factors and X-ray tube output were recorded. ESAK (mGy) was first calculated using the exposure data and tube output values, then the ESAK values were used to estimate entrance surface dose (ESD). The average BMI was 23.9 kg/m2. The mean tube potential used in A, B, C, and D hospitals and the corresponding estimated ESD were found to be 74.2, 69.8, 73, 76,7 kVp, and 2.54, 2.64, 2.94, 3.03 mGy respectively. The correlation coefficient between ESAK and BMI was found to be 0.98. When compared to computed radiography (CR), the conventional X-ray digital radiography reduces the radiation exposure in pelvic imaging by a factor of 1.18. The main objective of this study is to identify the atmospheric 7Be concentrations in 130 surface air samples collected from three stations located in Riyadh, Haql and Khafji cities in Saudi Arabia between November 2012 and April 2014. Monthly variations as well as seasonal patterns of 7Be were studied using a medium-volume air sampler and a gamma spectroscopy system equipped with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. 7Be exhibited one maximum specific activity in summer and one minimum in winter with average monthly concentrations of 12.4 ± 0.9, 15.4 ± 1.2, and 18.0 ± 1.3 mBq m−3 in Riyadh, Haql and Khafji, respectively. Overall, the average 7Be concentration in the three stations was 12.9 ± 1.0 mBq m−3, whereas the maximum value of 29.5 mBq m−3 was registered in Khafji city in August 2013. Besides 7Be, measurements indicate observations of 40 K, 137Cs, 226Ra radionuclides in surface air samples collected from the three stations. 40 K showed measurable concentrations, whereas the concentrations of 137Cs and 226Ra were only detected in a limited number of samples. • 7Be were studied using a medium-volume air sampler and a gamma spectroscopy system. • The measurements were performed in three locations in Saudi Arabia. • 4 K showed measurable concentrations, whereas the concentrations of 137Cs and 226Ra were below the detection limit. • 7Be and 4 K radionuclides were affected by local atmospheric conditions. The sensitivity to ionizing radiation is increasing by age of development for some malignant tumors. Therefore, children have higher risk to radiation induced tumors due the high cellular rate of proliferation and long lifespan probability. The risk is also increase with increase the effective and organ doses. Computed tomography (CT) exposed pediatric patients to higher radiation dose during multiphase image acquisition, repeated exams, for follow-up procedures. This research intended to estimate the radiogenic risks and effective radiation doses resulted from CT enhanced contrast for abdomen and pelvis. 126 (66 (62.3%) males, 60 (47.7%) females) pediatric patients underwent CT enhanced abdominal examination at Medical Imaging Department at King Khalid Hospital and Prince Sultan Center for Health Services, Alkharj, Saudi Arabia. The average and range of pediatric age (years) is 11.6 ± 5.0 (0.1-17). The mean, standard deviation, and range of the volume CT air kerma index (C VOL (mGy) and the air kerma length product (P KL , mGy.cm) were 9.8 ± 9.4 (2.1-45.8) and 1795 (221-3150) per abdominopelvic procedure, respectively. The mean and range of the effective dose (mSv) per procedure are 26.9 (2.4-59.1). The effective dose is higher compared to the most previously published studies. The effective dose per pediatric abdomen and pelvis with contrast procedure suggest that the patient dose is not optimized yet. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the physical therapists' knowledge and awareness of breast cancer, treatment modalities, contraindications, and clinical guidelines., Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 2020 to May 2021 in Saudi Arabia. The sample size was determined using the Raosoft sample size calculator, which indicated the need for 67 participants. All physical therapists of both sex in private and public hospitals in Ha'il and non-Ha'il regions were included in the study. Data was collected by a structured Google form questionnaire, consisting of 4 main domains with a maximum score of 43., Results: 57 physical therapists participated in the current study, out of which 31 were from the Ha'il region (42.1% male, 57.9% female) with a mean age of 29±7 years and a mean experience 6±7years. The referral of breast cancer patients was only 22.8%. Interestingly only 22.8% of the hospital has specific setups for oncology rehabilitation, and 12.3% have reported positive about continuing professional development (CPDs) workshops for breast cancer organized by their hospitals. 5.3% of patients with breast cancer are aware of the benefit of oncology rehabilitation, while 22.8% of patients come for follow-up sessions in the rehabilitation department. According to multiple regression, only gender was statistically significant for prediction, p<0.05. Females increased the mean score by 5.996 more than males. Female therapists are 38.2% more aware than males., Conclusions: Although physical therapists have a low level of knowledge and an average level of awareness, with a higher number of women than men, attitudes toward physical therapy are quite high, and the profession is practiced exceptionally well.

Staff occupational radiation exposure is limited to 20 mSv annually to preclude tissue reaction and lower risk of cancer effect. Staff occupational exposure arises during the preparation, injection, and scanning of the patients. Recent studies reported that nuclear medicine personnel might exceed the annual dose limit in high workload and poor radiation protection circumstances. Therefore, an accurate estimation of the annual dose limit is recommended. The goal of this research is to calculate the cumulative external effective dose (mSv) per year for nuclear medicine physicians, technologists, and nurses at SPECT/CT department. A total of 15 staff worked in the nuclear medicine department at King Saud Medical City (KSMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were evaluated for the last six years. 99m Tc is used more frequently for most of the patients. The procedures include renal, cardiac scintigraphy procedures. Staff dose was quantified using calibrated thermoluminecnt dosimeters (TLD-100) with an automatic TLD reader (Harshaw 6600). Exposure to ionizing radiation was evaluated in terms of deep doses (Hp(10) were evaluated. The overall average and standard deviation of the external doses for nuclear medicine physicians, technologists' and nurses were 1.8 ± 0.7, 1.9 ± 0.6, 2.0 ± 0.9, 2.2 ± 0.8, 6.0 ± 2.8, and 3.6 ± 1.3 for the years 2015,2016,2017,2018,2019, and 2020, respectively. Technologists and nurses received higher doses of compared to the nuclear medicine physicians. Technologists and nurses involved in radionuclide preparation, patients' injection, and image acquisition. Background: Among the different cancers found in women, breast cancer is the most common. Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a serious health complication affecting the quality of life and sleep quality. This study evaluates the quality of life and sleep quality among Saudi women with different stages of lymphedema following the treatment of breast cancer., Methods: This cross-sectional correlational study included 163 Saudi women with breast cancer-related lymphedema (Stages I-III), aged 28 to 56 years. From the patients identified for this study, women who suffered from mental and psychological dysfunctions or other malignant disorders were excluded. Copies of structured questionnaires were given to each participant during their visits to outpatient physiotherapy clinics. Quality of life was assessed using a valid questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), while sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The differences between the different lymphedema stages have been assessed., Results: Of the total number of participants 27 women had been diagnosed with stage I lymphedema, 84 women had been diagnosed with stage II lymphedema, and 52 women had been diagnosed with stage III lymphedema. All participants have shown low scores on both EORTC QLQ-C30 and PSQI. While analyzing the differences between the 3 stages of lymphedema with the Kruskal-Wallis test, noteworthy statistical differences between the 3 stages of lymphedema ( P  < .05) have been found. The Stage III lymphedema patients have been shown the lowest quality of life values in all scales when compared with the stage I and stage II lymphedema patients. For PSQI scores, the stage III lymphedema patients worse values than the stage I and stage II lymphedema patients ( P  < .05)., Conclusion and Recommendations: Both quality of life and quality of sleep have significantly decreased in Saudi women with different stages of breast cancer-related lymphedema. Quality of life and quality of sleep are the worst in stage III lymphedema patients. Future research should consider repeat and enlarge these results as well as assess the risk factors that affect the quality of life and quality of sleep among Saudi women suffering from breast cancer-related lymphedema.

Patient effective doses and the associated radiation risks arising from particular computed tomography (CT) imaging procedures are assessed. The objectives of this research are to measure radiation doses for patients and to quantify the radiogenic risks from CT brain and chest procedures. Patient data were collected from five calibrated CT modality machines in Saudi Arabia. The results are from a study of a total of 60 patients examined during CT procedures using the calibrated CT units. For CT brain and chest, the mean patient effective doses were 1.9 mSv (with a range of 0.6-2.5 mSv) and 7.4 mSv (with a range of 0.5-34.8 mSv) respectively. The radiogenic risk to patients ranged from between 10 -5 and 10 -4 per procedure. With 65% of the CT procedure cases diagnosed as normal, this prompts re-evaluation of the referral criteria. The establishment of diagnostic reference levels (DRL) and implementation of radiation dose optimisation measures would further help reduce doses to optimal values., (Crown Copyright © 2018. Morphological, nutritional and molecular analyses were carried out to assess genetic diversity among 35 introduced lentil genotypes (Lens culinaris Medik.). The genotypes exhibited significant differences for their field parameters and some of them showed noticeable superiority. The nutritional and proximate analysis showed that some genotypes were excellent sources of proteins, essential amino acids, minerals, anti-oxidants, total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) and hence, highlights lentil nutritional and medicinal potential. Sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and amplified fragments length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to estimate the genetic variability at the molecular level. The existence of a considerable amount of genetic diversity among the tested lentil genotypes was also proven at the molecular level. A total of 2894 polymorphic SRAP and 1625 AFLP loci were successfully amplified using six SRAP and four AFLP primer pair combinations. Polymorphism information content (PIC) values for SRAP and AFLP markers were higher than 0.8, indicating the power and higher resolution of those marker systems in detecting molecular diversity. UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetic average) cluster analysis based on molecular data revealed large number of sub clusters among genotypes, indicating high diversity levels. The data presented here showed that FLIP2009-64L and FLIP2009-69L could be used as a significant source of yield, total protein, essential amino acids, and antioxidant properties. The results suggest potential lentil cultivation in the central region of Saudi Arabia for its nutritional and medicinal properties, as well as sustainable soil fertility crop.
