A recent report from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, South Korea, highlights the potential of recombinant human Hapln1 (rhHAPLN1) in mitigating pulmonary emphysema, a component of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The researchers found that treating human alveolar epithelial cells with rhHAPLN1 increased TGF-β receptor 1 (TGF-βRI) protein levels and sirtuins levels, while inhibiting acetylated p300 levels. In animal models, rhHAPLN1 showed efficacy in reducing alveolar spaces enlargement. Preclinical trials are currently underway to investigate the effects of inhaled rhHAPLN1-containing aerosols on COPD animal models.
