The study investigated PM2.5 and heavy metal pollutant concentrations in Seoul and Wonju, South Korea, emphasizing the importance of considering PM2.5 chemical constituents for health impact assessments. While PM2.5 concentrations were similar between the two cities with slight variations, heavy metal concentrations differed significantly. Regional sources, PM2.5 composition, and meteorological conditions influenced these variations. Exposure to Fe was highest in all areas, with some heavy metals exceeding permissible levels, stressing the need to consider regional characteristics in assessments. Different heavy metals influence health risks differently in each city. When examining the HI (the summation of the hazard quotient for heavy metals), Seoul remained below an HI value of 1, while Wonju exceeded this threshold when exposed to CTE concentrations. In Seoul, As had a significant health impact of PM2.5, while in Wonju, Mn was more influential. Source apportionment confirmed different pollution sources in Seoul and Wonju, affecting the distribution of PM2.5 constituents in the atmosphere. Effective PM2.5 management requires a comprehensive approach considering chemical constituents and health impacts not just mass-based PM2.5 management, emphasizing regional-specific assessments and policy considerations to mitigate health risks. Background: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of antenatal depression and experience of abuse during childhood, to analyze the association between having experienced childhood abuse and depression during pregnancy, and to explore the role of emotional support as a moderator of that association. Methods: In total, 44,770 pregnant women were analyzed from the self-administered registry for risk assessment at community public health centers in Seoul, Republic of Korea, for home visiting service provision between 2015 and 2019. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was applied for the assessment of depression. The adjusted effects of childhood abuse experience on antepartum depression according to emotional support as an effect moderator were estimated. Results: Depression was present in 2,451 pregnant women (5.5%), and 1,506 (3.4%) reported having experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in childhood. After adjustment of covariates, pregnant women who had experienced abuse during childhood had EPDS scores 2.79 points higher than pregnant women without such experiences, and those who lacked emotional support during adulthood had 4.96 points higher than their counterparts. The difference in EPDS scores based on childhood abuse experience among women who reported emotional support (2.86) was larger than the difference in EPDS scores among those with no emotional support (1.91) (P for interaction = 0.0106). Conclusions: The experience of abuse in early life and emotional support in later life are both independently important for understanding antenatal depression in Korean women. Infection with high-risk (HR) Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with the development of precancerous lesions or invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Thus, the high viral load (VL) of HR-HPV DNA currently serves as a representative quantitative marker for cervical cancer. However, the clinical significance of low HPV DNA VL remains undetermined. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical association between the low HPV DNA VL and cytology/histologic diagnosis of cervical samples. We searched the electronic medical databases for the resultant analyses of HPV genotyping among patients who underwent treatment for any cervical lesion or who had undergone gynecological examinations with any positive HPV results according to the national cancer screening service between 2015 and 2016. HPV testing with genotyping and semi-quantitative VL measurement was conducted using an AnyplexTM II H28 Detection assay (H28 assay, Seegene, Seoul, Republic of Korea). The H28 assay is a multiplex semi-quantitative real-time PCR test using the tagging of oligonucleotide cleavage and extension (TOCE) technology. The VL was semi-quantified as high (3+; positive signal before 31 PCR cycles), intermediate (2+; positive between 31 and 39 PCR cycles), or low (1+; positive after 40 PCR cycles). Out of 5940 HPV VL analyses, 356 assays (5.99%) were reported as low VL (1+) of HPV DNA. Matched cytology diagnoses were mostly negative findings (n = 347, 97.5%), except for seven cases of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (1.9%) and two cases of atypical glandular cells (0.6%). During the follow-up periods, abnormal cytologic diagnoses were identified, including one case of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and two low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs). The matched, confirmative histologic diagnosis of HSIL cytology was compatible with chronic inflammation, wherein the two LSILs had regular check-ups. None revealed clinically concerned outcomes associated with HPV-related squamous lesions. The cytology was most likely negative for malignancy when the VL of HPV DNA was low (1+). Purpose: The psychosocial health of mother is crucial for healthy prenatal period and early childhood. We investigated the prevalence and risk factors of maternal depression during pregnancy and postpartum among women who participated in a home visitation program in Seoul, South Korea (Seoul Healthy First Step Project, SHFSP). Methods: We analyzed 80,116 women who participated in the SHFSP, which was launched by Seoul metropolitan government in 2013, and defined peripartum depression as a score ≥ 10 on the Korean version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Sociodemographic factors and psychosocial health status were evaluated through a standardized questionnaire completed by participants upon program registration. We calculated the prevalence of women at risk for peripartum depression and evaluated associated factors by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Prevalence of women at risk for peripartum depression was 17.7% (prepartum depression: 14.2%, postpartum depression: 24.3%). Younger maternal age, low income (OR 2.40, 95% CI 2.03–2.84), disability (2.61, 1.96–3.47), single parenthood (3.27, 2.69–3.99), and smoking (2.02, 1.44–2.83) increased the peripartum depression risk. Furthermore, experience of stress, change, or loss over the past 12 months (3.36, 3.22–3.50), history of treatment for emotional issues (2.47, 2.27–2.70), experience of child abuse (1.91, 1.74–2.11), and domestic violence (2.25, 1.81–2.80) increased the risk for peripartum depression, whereas having helpers for the baby (0.62, 0.58–0.67), having someone to talk with (0.31, 0.27–0.35), and considering oneself confident (0.30, 0.29–0.31) decreased the risk. Conclusions: Policies to reduce and manage peripartum depression should be strengthened, with a focus on high-risk pregnant and puerperal women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Five (1.22%) influenza C viruses were detected in 409 RV16 test negative samples during the influenza season. • Young children are infected with influenza C virus and are at risk for acute respiratory illness. • C/Sao Paulo/387/82-like lineage viruses circulated in South Korea. • Re-assortment event was observed in the C/Seoul/APD462/2015 strain. Influenza C virus has been largely neglected, compared to influenza A orB viruses, and is not routinely tested in clinical practices. However, several studies have indicated that influenza C virus causes severe acute respiratory illness and pneumonia in all ages. We conducted a study to identify influenza C virus among young children in South Korea.Study design. From October 2013 to September 2016, 973 young children with influenzalike illness (ILI) were enrolled at three university hospitals. We tested nasopharyngeal samples for 16 types of respiratory viruses. Among the tested samples, 564 were positive for one or more respiratory viruses. Except for the samples where 16 types of respiratory viruses were found, 409 negative samples were examined for the presence of influenza C virus, using a matrix gene specific primer set. Among 409 nasopharyngeal samples, five influenza C viruses were detected. The manifestation of influenza C virus infection in young children was observed acute respiratory illness, such as fever, rhinorrhea, and cough, but no pneumonia or severe respiratory illness. Nucleotide sequencing was conducted and a phylogenetic tree was generated. We found that C/Sao Paulo/387/82-like lineage viruses circulated in South Korea, and the fully sequenced virus (C/Seoul/APD462/2015) was closely related to C/Victoria/2/2012 and C/Tokyo/4/2014 strains. This study was the first report of influenza C virus detection in South Korea. Although severe illness was not observed in this study, we suggest the necessity for influenza C virus testing in pediatric patients with ILI, considering other reports of severe illnesses caused by influenza C virus infections.
