Various morphological malformations have always attracted the attention of naturalists. One of the iconic ones is gynandromorphy, in which an individual shows both male and female traits. Although this phenomenon is considered common across the insect kingdom, the level of scientific knowledge is still poor in ants - one of the most studied groups of arthropods. In this study, we present the discovery of a worker ant [of the rare thermophilic species Temnothorax turcicus (Santschi, 1934)] from the territory of Slovakia, part of whose head bears the characteristics of a male. Observations of a live individual affected in this way were also made. Additionally, the location where this specimen was found is currently the northernmost known distribution point of this species in Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ants are an important bioindicative group that plays a significant role in agroecosystems. As a result of interspecific competition for food, they can displace native species. The aim of the research was to assess the influence of environmental variables (soil pH, soil moisture, potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen) and the influence of seasons on the dispersion of ants. Between 2018 and 2020, while investigating different types of crops, we recorded 864 individuals belonging to 9 species and 2 unspecified species (sp.). The dispersion of ants was affected by moisture, soil pH, phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. In addition, an increase in value of the average number of individuals during spring and summer months was confirmed. We confirmed an increasing number of ant individuals with increasing values of potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen and soil moisture. A neutral pH of soil is optimal for ants. Our results yielded new information indicating that agricultural intensification negatively affects ants which are important for the production of biomass and reduces the number of pests which also affect crop yields. European bee-eater (Merops apiaster Linnaeus, 1758; Coraciiformes: Meropidae) is known as a bee-predator, but its food spectrum is variable and depends on the current supply. This is the first study focused on the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) as important prey in the diet of the European bee-eater. In 2017, 9,604 insect prey was obtained from pellets gained from two colonies breeding: (1) underground of a grazed sand dune (Radvaň nad Dunajom) and (2) in the sandy wall (Gabčíkovo) without pasture, both in southern Slovakia. Five ant taxa were identified, the list of ants in the bee-eater's diet was expanded by three taxa Lasius sp., Camponotus vagus (Scopoli, 1763) and Liometopum microcephalum (Panzer, 1798). In summary, ants represent the second most abundant family (12.35 %) of total prey. Compared to adults, nestlings (15.04 %) ate significantly more ants than adults (10.97 %). To study the ants' composition in the diet of bee-eater near to different types of habitats, the pellets of nestlings were chosen because they more accurately reflect the sources of insect during the breeding season. Differences in the feeding of the European bee-eater nestlings between the grazed and the non-grazed locality were confirmed, where Lasius sp. and Tetramorium sp. highly correlated with grazing site. Moreover, nestlings ate significantly more ants in the area, where an open habitat was managed by grazing (6.55 vs. 15.04 %). The presented research indicates the importance of traditional pastures in the country for ants and also for bee-eaters. These ecosystem engineers are likely to find more microhabitats on the pastures, which has also been reflected in the diet of the nestlings breeding on the grazed site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the first record of the oleander aphid (Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe, 1841; Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Slovakia, and also one of the most northern record of this natural pest on the invasive common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca Linnaeus.; Apocynaceae) in Central Europe. Modern social media crowdsourcing has achieved comprehensive distribution data in the horticultural community, and a total of 35 new distribution sites were discovered in 28 Slovak settlements, one new site in Austria, and one in the Czech Republic. The spiders Walckenaeria stylifrons (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1875) and Spiracme mongolica (Schenkel, 1963) are reported from Slovakia for the first time. These new records are based on adult males found in Western Slovakia in xerothermic habitats. The occurrence of W. stylifrons in Slovakia fills the gap in its distribution in Pannonian Basin and between Austria and Ukraine. Spiracme mongolica has been known only from the Balkans and south-eastern part of Europe to central Asia, this is the first record for Central Europe. We suggest Spiracme mongolica (Schenkel, 1963) new combination for Xysticus mongolicus Schenkel, 1963.
