Purpose: The purpose of the research was the design of a prototype cataloguing system, which provides easier bibliographic data entry, is based on the advantages of the IFLA LRM model and follows cataloguers' thought process. Methodology/approach: Prior to the conceptual design of the new cataloguing system, we have conducted five qualitative studies for a comprehensive understanding of the cataloguers' thought processes in different contexts. A total of 119 Slovenian cataloguers from 11 libraries took part in the studies conducted between May 2014 and May 2019. Various methodological approaches have been used for data gathering, such as: observation, think-aloud protocol, screen recording, concept mapping, focus group, and "Wizard of Oz" method. Results: The proposed prototype presents a possible approach towards more efficient bibliographic data entry and a cataloguing process resulting in less duplicate work and repetition and shows how a LRM-based cataloguing module could improve the existing cataloguing process. Research limitation: The research was limited only to works of fiction and descriptive cataloguing. Additionally, only the basic set of LRM entities was implemented. Originality/practical implications: Our research could serve as a basis for the future development of COBISS cataloguing software, when we switch to the new cataloguing paradigm in Slovenia. Purpose: The problem of information loss inherent in the romanisation of Chinese, Japanese and Korean names is examined together with the problems it poses both to librarians who record book information and to library users who search for resources written in East Asian languages in a catalogue containing only romanised transcriptions. Methodology/approach: Firstly, we describe the writing systems used to write Chinese, Korean and Japanese, the romanisation standards for these languages, and the institutions providing authority data in Latin script. We then analyse the procedures for romanising East Asian proper names and then retrieving their original written form, and identify cases of information loss and irreversible transformations. As a case study, we present the difficulties encountered by librarians and users in the Library of the Department of Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana (part of the Central Humanities Library and as such using the COBISS system) when using only romanised data to organise and search for library holdings in East Asian languages. Results: Information loss occurs in all methods of romanisation of Chinese, Korean and Japanese proper names presented in the previous sections. In the case of the Library of the Department of Asian Studies, this is a burden to both librarians and library users. Research limitations: We analysed the problem of the irreversibility of East Asian script romanisation in theory and in a case study involving one library; a more detailed analysis of other cases of Latin script catalogues hindering the management and use of library holdings in non-Latin scripts could be the object of future research. Originality/practical implications: This is the first analysis of the problem of information loss in romanised catalogues of East Asian library holdings in Slovenia, with a proposal for a possible solution using the Unicode standard. Bibliographic information was presented using five different prototype systems, including four different visualizations of FRBR-based bibliographic information and one more traditional bibliographic information system. This study reports user performance and perceptions using the same tasks across the different visualizations. Users include undergraduate students of a large university in the USA. The study's methodology is based on a continuation of a study testing the same prototype interfaces in Slovenia, with a number of modifications. The findings show visualization displays performing better on a number of measures than the traditional library catalog interface. A comparison of results highlights some of the differences in findings between the two groups of users. The article discusses information literacy programs at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. At the school's Department of Geography, librarians introduced information literacy as a part of the course "Introduction to Geography" in the academic year 1998-1999. First year students were required to take this course in their first semester. The course includes lectures and practical work on Slovenian catalogs and databases, international databases and using the Internet. The Information Literacy Program at the Faculty of Sports aims to introduce students to the development and influence of informatics.

Purpose: The paper investigates the importance and development of uniform title that enables collocation in the library catalogue. Research results on use of uniform titles in two union catalogues, the Slovenian COBISS and the Croatian CROLIST are also presented. Methodology/approach: Theoretical apects of the uniform title are treated: for the first time by Panizzi, then in the Paris Principles being the basis for the Verona's cataloguing code; in the latest International Cataloguing Principles including conceptual models Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD); and last but not least in the international cataloguing code Resource Description and Access (RDA). To find out whether the uniform titles are used consistently according to the Verona's cataloguing code and to the requirements of the bibliographic formats COMARC and UNIMARC, the frequency of tags 300 and 500 in bibliographic records is explored. Results: The research results indicate that the use of uniform titles in COBISS and CROLIST is not satisfactory and that the tags 300 and .500 are often missing in bibliographic records. In online catalogues a special attention should be given to the uniform title as it is considered an efficient linking device in the catalogue and as it enables collocation. Research limitations: The research is limited to bibliographic records for translations of works of personal authors and of anonymous works; corporate authors are not included. Differences in subject description of juvenile fiction was investigated on five examples of international classics in five library catalogues: Oton Župančič Public Library (KnjiŽnica Otona Župančiča) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Stadtbibliothek public library in Graz, Austria, integrated catalogues of libraries in the Gorizia region in Italy (Sistema bibliotecario della Provincia di Gorizia) and the Karlovac region in Croatia (Skupni katalog knjiŽnica Karlovačke županije) in September 2008. As Slovenian youth rarely speaks languages of neighbouring countries, British Library catalogue was added. Results show that catalogue records are inconsistent within an individual library as well as in comparision with other libraries in the sample. Librarians do not make consistent subject descriptions. Class number, which is present in all catalogues except in the Austrian one, usually represents: the author's country, language and/or nationality, the literary genre, and the target audience. Subject headings in the sample bring information on the subject (aboutness), author's country, language and/or nationality, the literary genre, and target audience. Summaries tell more on the story. But they can also bring information on emotional experience of the reader, information on the author or history of the literary work. It would be economically beneficial if subject description could be more consistent. But uniform subject description is not possible because of diverse library collections and users. The article presents a professional work of the librarian Filip Terpin from Selca (North of Škofja Loka, Slovenia). Terpin's catalogue of the bishop's library in Gornji grad is the oldest catalogue in Slovenia, with the exception of some protestant book lists which date even earlier. It was created in 1655, thirteen years before the second oldest preserved catalogue, which was made by his contemporary Schönleben. Terpin's catalogue is carefully described and compared with the Schönleben's list of Volf Engelbert Auersperg's library, which was made in 1668. The author highlights the professional relations between the two librarians and describes the destiny of the Primož Trubar's and the bishof's libraries in Gornji grad. The article is a part of an extensive research set out to identify and explore the provenience of science books which were under the Terpin's custody in the Gornji grad library, especially of those owned by the Slovenian protestants or even Primož Trubar himself. In Slovenia, subject description of fiction was traditionally limited to the Universal Decimal Classification number, which was mainly assigned for shelving. Readers found their books by browsing the library shelves, while librarians had to rely on their personal familiarity with the library collection if they wanted to advise readers on the selection of books. Subject description, such as is often associated with non-literary works, would require a lot of time. Therefore, we wanted to know whether reading book reviews in newspapers could replace reading the entire literary work. We analysed a small sample of book reviews written by literary critics and published in Slovenian newspapers and compared them to the reviews, written by librarians for the same literary works (in the »Priporočamo!« project). We realized that the content is different. However, they could be used for identification of additional subject headings. The same findings resulted from a similar analysis of literary works written for children. Concepts, that seemed potentially appropriate subject headings, often actually do not appear in the Slovenian subject headings or subject headings from the Pionirska knjižnica of Ljubljana. Both subject heading lists should include a larger number of abstract concepts, which more often appear in literary than in non-literary works. Both subject heading lists should also be coordinated. The aim of the article is a presentation of numeric data on publishing production in Slovenia in 2005 with regard to legal deposit - how many publishers were recorded and what kind of publications they published. Data was selected from the cataloguing module of the National and University Library local database in the COBISS system according to the following criteria: printed publications published by Slovenian publishers in 2005 and received as legal deposit. The research was limited by the characteristics of the local database and the COBISS search possibilities. The presentation of the results follows the UNESCO recommendations for statistics on the production of publications. Actual Slovenian publishing production is larger, since there is a gap between the published publications and the legal deposit copies received by the National and University Library. The article presents the results of the questionnaire which was sent to a certain number of the Slovenian emigrant libraries in order to determine their present situation (especially their work conditions) and their holdings. This will form the basis of future involvement of the National and University Library and its Slovenian Diaspora Publications Collection, respectively. The final goal is that emigrant libraries join gradually the joint national online database = the Union Catalogue. Accordingly, the National and University Library would make up the deficiencies of its national collection called »slovenica«, because the publications published abroad are often not identified due to small editions and their dispersion over all continents of the world. Previously unknown in Carniola preserved books of the Volf's, later Ljubljanian "Prince's" Trust Library were found. Just the scientific part of the library was examined by using Count Volf Engelbert Auersperg's manuscript catalogue (1668) transcribed in 1762 and sales catalogues (1982-1983). Carniolan libraries preserved six scientific books from the former Ljubljanian "Prince's" Trust Collection. Most of them are at Ljubljanian National and University Library. Last but not least, several Volf's medicine books are kept in private collections of Slovenian owners. The examined part of Volf's collection covered just a tenth of his 7000 titles. Therefore many other Volf's books should have remained in his native country, which is put at the limelight for the first time to attract other researches interested in Slovenian Library and Science History. Former Volf's books could be identified with characteristic Schönleben's manuscript bookplates. The "life paths" of some discovered Ljubljanian "Prince's" Trust Library books were described to show how Carniolans succeeded to keep them at home. Some items with bookplate of Wolf Engelbert Auersperg were found in Library of National Museum and in Provincial Museum of Kočevje. It is claimed that those were not a part of Governor General Count Wolf Engelbert Auersperg (* 1610) and his descendants' library, but rather a part of the former collection of Wolf's cousin's son, hereditary Marshal of Carniola Wolf Engelbert Auersperg (* 1641). Purpose - The purpose of this research is to provide information about derivative bibliographic relationships in the online catalogue COBIB, to investigate size and complexity of bibliographic families and to determine whether bibliographic characteristics are associated with the extent of derivations. Design/methodology/approach - A bibliographic entity consisting of a work and item is represented by bibliographic records. A random sample of records is converted into a sample of progenitor works and bibliographic families for each progenitor are constructed. Findings - 25.75 per cent of progenitor works are derivative; successive derivations with 67.02 per cent appear most frequently. The size of bibliographic families ranges from 1 to 16; older progenitors have larger families. The majority of families have one type of relationship; there is one case with four types. A large proportion, 59.06 per cent, of derivative relationships is not expressed explicitly by catalogue. Research limitations/implications - Research of bibliographic records representing more than one work is needed. It is also important to find out what catalogue users are looking for: a work or an item? Practical implications - A model for COBIB is suggested; it enables an equal identification of works, items and relationships. A cataloguer must create an authority record for each work and link it with corresponding bibliographic records for items. Originality/value - Information about relationships should be incorporated into the catalogue and corresponding records linked. Explicit control of derivative relationships would be of great help to catalogue users and would make information retrieval improved and more precise; it would also allow more efficient use of knowledge and library materials.
