ICAP is a framework that classifies learning processes based on students' explicit behaviors. The framework is developed for testing the hypothesis that interactive exercises are better than constructive exercises, and active exercises are better than the passive exercises for higher cognitive engagement and better learning outcomes. The ICAP Framework is intended to assist researchers, instruction designers and instructors in determining the activities appropriate for the aimed research and teaching. This study aims to evaluate articles based on or supported by the ICAP Framework from various aspects. In the study, employing the descriptive survey method, data collection was conducted through document analysis, while content analysis was utilized to analyze the data. The 71 articles reviewed within the study's scope were examined through the "data collection form" developed by the authors. In this context, the articles' general and methodological characteristics and themes and the findings related to ICAP contexts are presented. As a result of the research, no study regarding the ICAP Framework was conducted in Turkey. It was revealed that most of the studies, which have increased in number since 2017 in various countries, utilize the ICAP framework at the analytical level or create models-modules and develop toolsscales based on the ICAP Framework. Additionally, it was observed that mostly undergraduate and K12 students were studied in face-to-face education, with social sciences as the leading disciplinary field and teaching-learning approaches and design-development-evaluation as the most frequently studied topics, while in studies in which mixed and qualitative methods were the leading methods, exploratory and experimental approaches were more preferred. In line with these results, recommendations are presented to contribute to the field.

Inquiry-Based Teaching Practice (IBTP) is an essential component of science education, and promoting its implementation is at the heart of various reform efforts. Even though science teachers regard IBTP as an essential pedagogical method, they rarely use it for various reasons. This study utilizes Bronfenbrenner's ecological framework to examine potential factors at various levels of the educational ecosystem that predict the implementation of inquiry-based teaching practices among Grade 9 science teachers in South Africa. To this end, quantitative data from 537 educators who participated in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2019 national assessment were utilized. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results revealed that four variables at different socioeconomic levels were perceived to strongly predict teachers' implementation of inquiry teaching practices. These factors include teachers' job satisfaction, instructional resource shortage, and teachers' perception of the significance of various assessment strategies at the mesosystem level as well as teachers' participation in professional development at the exosystem level. Significant correlations exist between some of the predictive variables. Implications for policy are discussed.

Despite a renewed interest in music teacher education practices with real-world implications, the heterogeneity of learners is often daunting to early-career educators. There is a lack of specific and adequate coursework in undergraduate music education programs to prepare preservice music teachers (PSMTs) for teaching diverse learner populations, including learners with disabilities. Drawing on a project where PSMTs facilitated drumming sessions at a special education school, this case study explored PSMTs' experiences of project-based service learning in a special educational setting. Five themes that emerged from the data describing PSMTs' experiences suggest that such initiatives with learners at a special education school can foster student responsiveness and autonomy. The findings describe how integrating dialectic aspects could nurture the music-teaching skills of a PSMT. These aspects are joy and challenges, expectations and reactions, and learning to teach individually and in a group.

The inquiry-based strategy in science education is widely recommended and incorporated in practical work. However, contextual and intrinsic teaching challenges associated with practical investigations (inquiry-based practical work), occur in resource-constrained physical sciences classrooms in South Africa. The intrinsic challenges have previously been identified from the perspective of the pedagogical content knowledge framework and the concerns-based adoption model. In this article we present a novel approach, investigating the intrinsic challenges from a viewpoint of instructional design. The multi-method technique was used to collect data which was analysed by combining the deductive and the inductive approaches in thematic analysis. The findings consist of intrinsic teaching challenges in the initiation, planning, and implementation phases of practical investigations. Examples of the challenges include practical work being considered to have a confirmatory role, inadequacies linked to addressing learner safety, and unfamiliarity with well-known instructional models. While new challenges were identified, the findings add a new perspective to intrinsic challenges relating to practical investigations in the context of physical sciences education in South Africa. Also, the findings enhance global knowledge about the complexity of intrinsic teaching challenges linked to practical investigations. In addition, the findings inform teacher support while suggesting lines of future research linked to practical investigations in resource-constrained physical sciences classrooms in South Africa and beyond.

In this paper, we explored the type of mathematical connections Grade 11 learners make when solving two-dimensional (2D) trigonometric problems in an Activity-Based Learning (ABL) environment. We followed a qualitative case study design within an interpretive paradigm. Convenience sampling was used to select a whole class of 45 Grade 11 learners from one of the public non-fee-paying secondary schools in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province of South Africa. Group work presentations and classroom interactions were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using deductive thematic analysis guided by the mathematical connections' framework. The findings indicated that learners managed to make procedural, meaning, reversibility, different representations, feature, and inclusion part whole as well as integrated connections as they worked on 2D trigonometric problems in an ABL environment. We established that learners did not make generalization part-whole connections. In addition, we found that some learners lacked mathematical connections skills and failed to solve the problems. Engaging learners in an ABL environment provided a fine-grained approach that allowed them to make mathematical connections. We, therefore, recommend that teachers should create an ABL environment to enable learners to make different types of mathematics connections during the teaching and learning of trigonometric concepts.

Utilising a qualitative case study, we set out to investigate how learners at Hope Saturday School evoked the principles of ubuntu/humanity as they collaborated during project-based learning. The article is part of a broader study in which a mix of semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, observations, document analysis and field notes were used to capture data. The learner participants were Black, and almost all of them resided in informal settlements, townships, and farming communities. Data were analysed using content analysis. The philosophy of ubuntu was used to underpin this study. The finding of this study shows that values like interdependence, sharing, caring, teamwork, solidarity, unity and helping one another were evoked as learners collaborated in project-based learning. The article concludes that a supportive environment that aids the development of ubuntu values can improve learning experiences of underperforming learners.

Public administration managers are confronted with new and highly complex challenges emerging at a rapid rate. This situation requires a reimagining of public administration education to prepare public administration managers to capably deal with these challenges. While the Master of Public Administration (MPA) is globally used as vehicle for preparing public administration managers for performing their functions, the question posed is: How can MPA programmes be transformed to prepare students for dealing with emerging complex challenges in the changing world of work? This article provides a personal exploratory account of the transformation of teaching and learning of a South African MPA case. The research design was not selected for generalising findings to the universe of MPA offerings, but for obtaining case-specific information and insights. The study draws from insider's memory work supported by a variety of textual data such as notes, reports, official documents, curriculum documentation and the content of the 2020 online module sites. The article proposes a transformed curriculum to provide for the learning of public administration capabilities appropriate for dealing with emerging challenges. It subsequently reports on the curriculum transformation project of the selected case by reflecting on some philosophical assumptions and assumptions on how people learn and explaining the use of the inquiry-driven learning strategy to facilitate the learning of appropriate capabilities for dealing with public administration challenges. This article contributes to the existing literature on the role of the MPA in the mid-career education of public administration managers by suggesting the learning of public administration capabilities through an inquiry-driven learning strategy.

Background: The theory and practice divide is a persistent conundrum in teacher education. Moreover, foundation phase literacy teacher education is no exception because such graduates are expected to acquire knowledge and skills to address the challenges of the classroom. Objectives: This article focuses on the application of an integrated approach to literacy teacher education. Method: This conceptual article is structured to reflect how common pedagogical choices such as service learning, situated learning, reflection, and student support were used to design and enable integrated student learning experiences within teacher preparation programmes. Results: By exploring the educational value of these pedagogical choices that informed the integrated approach, I developed an integration framework to inform the pedagogy of literacy education. Conclusion and contribution: The integration framework reflecting the catalytic pedagogical choices could guide teacher educators regarding the approaches to address the persistent conundrum in overcoming the theory and practice divide in teacher preparation programmes.

Using a qualitative historical research approach, this paper examines the contextual influences, including the formulation motive and their possible impact on policy implementation, of the South African (SA) e-Education White Paper 7 (WP7). A critical discourse analysis (CDA) was conducted on the policy and data was collected through semi-structured interviews (SSI) with purposefully selected participants. Findings of the study reveal tacit contradictions and tensions depicting a policy in contradiction with itself, carrying the hallmark of a symbolic policy. That is, a policy characterised by lack of direction, contradictions in its motive of formulation, no dedicated resources for its implementation, distorted communication resulting from the validity tests, and lack of "material consequences" (Rivzi and Lingard, 2009, p.8). The circumstantial context (socioeconomic and political) of its formulation, dictated to by the prescripts of the negotiated political settlement (NPS), that ushered in the new democratic South Africa (SA), is found to have taken precedence. It further overshadowed critical analysis on the educational needs, which would have informed a better strategic integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) in education. The circumstantial context resulted in a lack of a common goal between policy actors and interest groups. This, to the extent that the former thought of capitalising on the donations of the latter for their own political interests, while the latter saw in the formulation of such policy a way of imposing Government spending in favour of their businesses. These circumstances may have contributed to the policy's failure to reach its set textual objectives and goal by 2013.

Inquiry-based science education has been advocated as a goal in the South African school science curriculum. Despite this goal, the implementation of inquiry in this country has been largely fragmented due to contextual factors that exert an influence on its traction in the classroom. This phenomenologically orientated study reports on the experiences of 9 South African science teachers of inquiry-based teaching at disadvantaged schools. The study draws on interview data to understand teachers' challenges and successes in inquiry-based teaching. The following 5 themes emerged from an analysis of interview transcripts: (a) equity and quality; (b) a double-edged sword; (c) wicked solutions to wicked problems; (d) learner motivation; and (e) school commitment to inquiry. Despite tremendous obstacles at disadvantaged schools, the teachers were able to demonstrate resilience in implementing an adaptive form of inquiry that enable their learners to have experiences that supported authentic and autonomous learning that addressed higher-order thinking. This finding invites future research on the classroom practices of teachers who are able to enact inquiry-based teaching in overcoming contextual factors.

Practical work is ubiquitous in science education, but its enactment is challenging in remote teaching contexts. The situation was exacerbated due to a moratorium on contact classes induced by the COVID-19 pandemic that necessitated strict health protocols. Home-based practical work (HBPW) became a significant option as academic institutions shifted to emergency remote teaching. The question is whether HBPW provides equivalent learning experiences in comparison to laboratory-based practical work (LBPW). This research therefore explored preservice science teachers' experiences of HBPW implemented at a particular South African university. Eighty-four preservice science teachers, who engaged in HBPW in a chemistry module, were purposively selected as the participants. The data were generated through individual reflections at the end of the semester. An adaption of the equivalence theory was ideal in analysing and interpreting the results. Results show that HBPW was flexible, empowering, contextualised, and enhanced active learning. New forms of interaction emerged in the absence of physical student-teacher and student-student interactions. Concerns over its ability to develop practical skills are expressed. Recommendations are made with a view to optimising HBPW.

This study explored Grade 3 teachers' use of an inquiry-based approach to mediate the development of basic science concepts among learners within the socio-cultural theory. This study adopted interpretive case study research of the qualitative type, using a sample of four (4) female teachers who use the home language of learners as the language of instruction. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide and observational schedule which was properly validated. Analysis of data was achieved through thematic data analysis. The result of the study revealed that the foundation phase teachers are aware of the importance of the use of the inquiry-based approach in mediating the development of basic science concepts by the learners, but only one out of the four participants implemented it. Thus, it was recommended that there should be a provision of further professional development spaces that promote a community of practice in using an Inquiry-Based Approach in the Foundation Phase.

Inquiry-based practical work (IBPW) is one of the innovative instructional strategies in science education. Science teacher preparation programmes play a role in preparing preservice teachers to facilitate IBPW in classrooms located in different school settings, including multiple-deprived classrooms. The adverse conditions against the successful implementation of IBPW found in multiple-deprived classrooms provide problems that preservice teachers will have to solve in their future classrooms. It is against this background that this study explored how preservice science teachers used computational thinking as a problem-solving strategy when facilitating IBPW in multiple-deprived classrooms. Using a single-case exploratory study, the experiences of 16 preservice physical sciences teachers were elicited through lesson planning, simulated teaching, and reflection. The data collected were analysed through thematic-content-analysis techniques. Findings indicate how through the use of computational thinking, participants were able to solve problems that had the potential to inhibit the implementation of IBPW.

This study explored the perceptions of teachers and learners regarding the use of Process Oriented Guided Learning Inquiry Learning (POGIL) to teach stoichiometry. A qualitative case study was carried out at two conveniently and purposively sampled township schools in Pretoria, South Africa. For this purpose, two Grade 11 physical sciences classes were identified where 48 learners and their respective teachers, who had previously been trained to teach using POGIL, gave consent to participate in the study. Data were collected using lesson observations, focus group interviews for learners and interviews for teachers. All data were transcribed and analysed with the aid of ATLAS.ti software for qualitative data analysis. The findings from the observations indicate that the learners were excited, motivated, and actively engaged in their work. They assisted one another by attempting to answer questions supported with justification. The findings from the focus group interviews indicate that the learners were excited to learn using POGIL and wished to use the method in other subjects, including mathematics. The learners had noticed improvements in their grades and understanding of abstract topics. The findings from the teacher interviews indicated that they appreciated POGIL because they found it useful in reducing misconceptions, increasing learner participation, increasing understanding and achievement, and that their learners were more engaged. The results indicate that POGIL increased learners' interest, participation and active learning, while seemingly also improving the learners' understanding of and achievement in abstract topics like stoichiometry. POGIL may be useful in increasing active learning and participation of learners which may lead to increased understanding and achievement.

Active learning strategies are purported to be effective in enhancing students' understanding of concepts that would otherwise be difficult to master through other strategies of mediating learning. This study forms part of a bigger study where pre-service teachers' errors and misconceptions in transformation geometry were identified, analyzed and then addressed. The focus of this current study is on exploring the implementation of a van Hiele phase-based instruction to address the students' misconceptions through the facilitation of active learning. The instructional program was implemented with 82 pre-service teachers (student teachers) and field notes, observations and informal conversations with students were used to collect data during the implementation. A test was then given at the end of the intervention to determine the effect of the intervention on student performance. Findings suggest active learning can be promoted, through the use of van Hiele phase-based intervention program, to address effectively students' misconceptions.

A qualitative pre-/post-test case study was conducted to explore the influence of inquiry-based education in eliciting learners' understanding of the particulate nature of matter in the gaseous phase. Two grade four classes (n=116) were conveniently and purposively sampled from two farm schools in Pretoria, South Africa. Data was collected through pre-test, initial group interviews, post-test, final group interviews and field notes. The pre-intervention data indicated that the continuous, continuous-animistic and the continuous empty models of matter in the gaseous phase dominated learners' understanding in all the four classes. A considerable decrease in the continuous model was observed in the inquiry classes rather than in the lecture classes post-intervention.

The effect of using Geoboards in teaching Euclidean geometry in Grade 11 mathematics learners is described. A qualitative research design was adopted in the study. This design was preferred as it provides the conceptual understanding of the teaching methods of the teachers. The participants were taught Euclidean Geometry with the use of Geoboard and an assessment was done and marks were recorded. Thereafter, convenience sampling was used to select twenty (n = 20) participants from two secondary schools in the following order: eight (n = 8) of the top learners, four (n = 4) of the middle learners, and eight (n = 8) of the bottom learners were randomly selected from the Euclidean geometry test mark list to form four focus groups. Only five (n = 5) participants were assigned to each group. The study used the constructivism theory as the lens through which the data will be analyzed. The data were collected by means of focus groups and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the Geoboard gives learners the freedom to learn on their own and in small groups while the teacher provides supervisory guideline using geometric theorem worksheets that support and guide learners. It was also noted that a Geoboard allows learners to work collaboratively with their peers while promoting learner-centered learning.

This study investigated the effect of interactive computer simulation-supported inquiry on South African grade 8 learners' comprehension of atoms and molecular structures. Two sample groups of 34 learners per sample group were used, one acting as a control group who were exposed to a teacher-directed pedagogy while the experimental group used simulations in inquiry-based learning as an intervention to enhance their understanding of atomic and molecular structures. Data were collected by means of conceptual tests, a questionnaire survey, and individual interviews. A statistical analysis of quantitative data gleaned from the post-test showed that the learners in the experimental group performed better than the control group learners. This reflects that the interactive simulations using in an inquiry activity impacted more favorably on the conceptual understanding of learners compared to a teacher-directed approach. The results of the questionnaire survey indicated that learners in the experimental class had a positive experience of using the simulations. They recognized that the simulations enhanced their visualization of abstract concepts, and they reflected on their efficacy in manipulating the simulation.

Although there is increased uptake of active learning approaches in especially developed countries, this is still lagging within the African context. The current study therefore focused on the implementation of group learning at Stellenbosch University, with several modifications versus our earlier, pilot study. Students freely formed small groups at the start of a 5-wk cardiovascular physiology lecture series and were apportioned three separate assignments to complete over this period. This included three in-class group-learning sessions, while students also completed group work outside class times. The active learning element was embedded within a constructive alignment framework. Our data revealed that 75% of the students felt that the in-class sessions was a good use of their time and that they progressively improved their assignment scores, i.e., 67.5 ± 9.3%, 72.4 ± 9.8%, and 76.1 ± 9.5% for the first, second, and final ones, respectively (P < 0.0001). Moreover, the average class score for their final test (68 ± 15.1%) was higher when compared with the average class score (57.5 ± 19.4%) calculated for the previous 3 yr (P < 0.0001). This study revealed two major findings: i.e., 1) students displayed a strong positive response regarding the adoption of in-class collaborative group work, and 2) the introduction of such active learning elements correlated with improved student assignment and test scores. Based on these findings, we propose additional modifications (including a shift to more formative assessments) to ensure even greater success with the roll-out of such active learning elements within the African context.

This qualitative case study explored how exposure to Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) improves 11th grade physical sciences learners' competency in solving stoichiometry problems. Two township schools of low socioeconomic status in Pretoria, South Africa, were conveniently and purposively sampled. Two classes (N = 48) composed of multicultural black learners of mixed gender participated in the study. Data were collected at each school using a pre-test, post-test and video-recorded classroom observations. The Interactive-Constructive-Active-Passive theory served as a conceptual and analytical framework to understand the nature of student engagement during the POGIL activities. High student engagement could contribute to improved problem-solving competency in the post-test. The findings from the classroom observations and recorded group discussions served as evidence of the learners' engagement. The learners collaboratively engaged in the analysis, synthesis and evaluation of ideas, reasoning and justifying their suggestions in solving POGIL tasks. Interactions were largely characterised as interactive and constructive modes of engagement, both facilitating deep processing strategies. Regarding data from the tests, problem-solving competency was classified at four levels based on Bloom's taxonomy. The pre-test results indicated a lack of competency in solving complex stoichiometry problems. ANOVA indicated that the differences in the frequencies of the competency levels found in the pre- and post-test are statistically significant. High student engagement could have contributed to improved problem-solving competency in the post-test, although more improvement could be made in terms of problem solving competency in questions introducing more complexity and higher cognitive demand such as multistep calculations. The study shows how using POGIL in high school science may empower learners with enhanced problem solving skills.

Sub-Saharan Africa secondary school science curricula recognise language as the most important communication tool for learners' biology learning outcomes. Despite this prominent goal, learners' scientific literacy at secondary school appears to be insufficient to cope with classroom teaching and learning of biology. This paper presents a review of literature regarding the way English as the language of instruction and inquiry-based learning strategies affect biology learning in Sub-Saharan Africa secondary schools. The scope of the review included journal articles, books and book chapters published in the period from 2005 to 2020 on the English language of instruction in biology education in Sub-Saharan Africa. We established criteria for first article searches indexed in Scopus, African Journals Online, the Education Resources Information Center, Web of Science and Psych Info as recognised index systems for science education. We considered studies related to the understanding of learners' language backgrounds, language-in-education policy and pedagogical language strategies (practice) that mediate learning. In this case, 53 studies were identified after removing redundancies; 27 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria when screened by key words and abstract and reviewed for eligibility; and only nine were selected after evaluating the full texts. The review analysis suggests that there is a gap in the corpus of literature on what and how pedagogical language strategies should be utilised to support meaningful learning of biology in multilingual settings. Poor learners' academic achievement and conceptual engagement in biology at secondary school level were the main effects reported by the reviewed literature. Less is still known about the effect of the use of inquiry-based learning strategies on learners' conceptual engagement in multilingual biology classrooms. We recommend formulating a clear policy articulation on the use of bilingual instructions in teaching and learning of biology at the secondary school level; assessing teacher and learner performance over pedagogical language strategies; and evaluating the contribution of IBL strategies in addressing language barriers in biology learning for higher order thinking skills in Sub-Saharan Africa secondary schools.

This account of practice discusses how we have implemented an emerging action learning framework in the form of guiding questions that are relevant to key stakeholders: the client organisation (sponsoring organisation), the management development company, the participants and the Learning Process Facilitator (LPF) to aid participants in their individual transformative learning. The guiding questions are based on an emerging action learning framework devised by the primary author as part of her PhD research and applied to an action learning component in our Management Development Programmes (MDPs). A condensed version of this action learning framework was published in Action Learning: Research and Practice by Robertson, Terblanche, and Le Sueur [2021. "An Emerging Action Learning Framework to Foster Individual Transformative Learning During Management Development Programmes." "Action Learning: Research and Practice" 18 (2): 102-120]. In this account of practice we share the emerging action learning framework, the guiding questions for the key stakeholders and our reflection on the application of the questions.

Despite growing consensus regarding the value of inquiry-based teaching and learning, the implementation of such a pedagogical practice continues to be a challenge for many South African teachers, especially at rural schools. The research reported in this article concerns the interaction between Grade 10 Physical Sciences teachers' beliefs about inquiry-based learning, and their practice of inquiry in their classrooms. This research adopted a mixed methods design. In the first phase of the research, quantitative data were collected by distributing a validated questionnaire to Physical Sciences teachers in an education circuit in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa. The next phase of the research involving teacher interviews, provided a more in-depth explanation of some of the findings, which emerged from the questionnaire survey. It was found that sampled teachers from the rural district have a positive attitude towards inquiry in the teaching and learning of Physical Sciences, and recognise the benefits of inquiry, such as addressing learner motivation and supporting learners in the understanding of abstract science concepts. However, despite this positive belief towards inquiry-based learning, teachers are less inclined to enact inquiry-based learning in their lessons. Teachers claim that the implementation of inquiry-based learning is fraught with difficulty, such as availability of laboratory facilities, teaching materials, time to complete the curriculum, and large classes, which creates tension in their willingness to implement it.

Textbooks remain an important resource in the hands of science teachers in ensuring that curricular aims and educational reforms are realised in school science. In a publication of the National Research Council (NRC) entitled "A Framework for K-12 Science Education," emphasis is placed on students experiencing inquiry-based practices and not merely learning about them. These "practices" of science describe the behaviour in which real-life scientists engage while they investigate and construct model and theories about the natural and human world. The research reported in this article explored the extent to which these science practices are represented in South African Grade 12 Physical Sciences textbooks using qualitative content analysis. The analysis applied an adapted validated conceptual framework of the eight science practices that have been identified by the National Research Council. A Science Practice Continuum Rubric (SPCR) was developed for the coding of the textbooks. The analysis revealed that the science practices reflected in the textbooks were predominantly teacher-directed with only limited opportunity for student-engagement in the science practices. The findings of this analysis suggest that textbooks should be modified to sufficiently reflect practices at a higher level of student autonomy in order to improve the 21st-century learners' scientific literacy in South African high school science.

Science education is particularly important for both developed and developing countries to promote technological development, global economic competition and economic growth. This study explored the relationship between family experiences, the motivation for science learning, and the science achievement of a group of Grade Nine learners in South Africa. A purposeful sample of 380 learners from three racial groups in public and independent schools completed the Student Motivation for Science Learning questionnaire combined with items investigating family experiences. The findings indicate that family experiences correlated significantly with three motivational aspects of science learning (self-efficacy, active learning and achievement goals); boys perceived family experiences significantly more positively than girls; and parental educational level as well as school values seemed to be related to science learning. Recommendations were made as to how schools can support families in enhancing family experiences that promote learners' motivation for science learning and science achievement.

The majority of the students who enroll at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in South Africa are not equipped with the necessary academic/learning skills to cope with the university environment, especially in Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Higher Education and Training (2013, p. 17), further states that "students' support is crucial to ensure that students adapt to the demands of college life and that they can meet the demands of college programmes". Particularly in South Africa, the school environment might also contribute to poor student performance as a result of insufficient student support, and a lack of facilities and resources. In order to address this gap, a Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) programme was implemented to provide support targeting high-risk subjects for at-risk students in Mechanical Engineering at WSU. The programme therefore is pro-active and student-driven in that senior students assist junior students with their academic work and learning processes. The programme is designed to encourage collaborative and cooperative learning approaches during group sessions and active student engagement to support student learning (Laal & Laal, 2012). The programme requires substantial resources and time commitments. It is important from an operational, learning, and student perspective to understand in what ways the PAL programme assists students (if at all). Eliciting the experiences of students also helps the department to design interventions from a student-centred perspective using the lens of learning theories. This qualitative case study explores the student experience of the Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) programme. Open-ended questionnaires/survey from 20 first-year students elicited their perceptions and experiences of the PAL programme. Responses were analysed thematically. Findings indicated that the students had useful insights that may contribute to revising the programme. Aspects mentioned were improved study skills, improved time management, and improved communication, problem-solving and presentation skills. The study suggests that the PAL programme also creates a safe (where students of the same age come together to discuss concepts of the subject under the guidance of the senior student as an experienced student), comfortable and conducive environment for first-year students' learning. However, the gender dynamics within the programme point to revisions needed in the programme to address the gap on the gender balance as only six out of the twenty participants in this study were female. The study contributes to our understanding of aspects of PAL for first-year Mechanical Engineering students at WSU, as it affords students the opportunity to interpret, integrate and apply information/knowledge acquired during lectures and to interact effectively in small-group sessions.

This article focuses on the unique contribution of the QT-clicker regarding formative and summative assessment in a large flipped first year statistics module. In this module, the flipped classroom as pedagogical model first substituted the traditional teaching model. QT-clickers were subsequently introduced to enable active and cooperative learning for face-to-face engagement inside the classroom. The various input capabilities of the QT-clicker, providing for the possibility of partial grade crediting, offer a distinguishing advantage. These clickers were initially only used for formative assessment, but soon extended to summative assessment. Two cohorts--2014 (no QT-clickers) and 2017 (with QT-clickers)--were compared. The intervention of using QT-clickers was evaluated along two lines: the pedagogical influence of the QT-clicker and the effect of partial grade crediting. Several general linear models (GLMs) were fitted to the data to investigate how QT-clicker use is related to the students' examination performance. The outcome of the GLM models indicates that the association of higher examination marks with QT-clicker use holds for the 2017 cohort with and without partial credit. A qualitative component of the study reports on the student voice testifying to positive experience.

The twenty-first century has witnessed a call for teachers to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) into teaching and learning. However, creating a classroom environment that engages in active learning has proved to be a hurdle to South African teachers, as more traditional teaching methods continue to be utilised in teaching. These challenges have derailed the current efforts by the Department of Basic Education to introduce ICT in the teaching and learning process in an effort to create a learner-centred environment. This paper seeks to open epistemic access by determining the challenges faced by rural accounting teachers in implementing web-based collaborative learning. The paper reports on the findings of a qualitative study that employed interviews to generate data with five Grade 10 accounting teachers in rural South Africa. The findings reveal that accounting teachers are faced with myriad challenges that serve as a stumbling block in their attempt to implement web-based collaborative learning. Contrary to the principles of Critical Accounting Research, the teaching methods and resources used position teachers in control and authority while the learners are disempowered, marginalised and oppressed. We consequently argue that accounting teachers require support and capacity building to implement web-based collaborative learning effectively.

Since we are entering the fourth industrial revolution, it becomes increasingly important that students, irrespective of their field of study, are data literate. However, many students view their mandatory statistics modules with contempt. This qualitative study analysed students' comments to determine what their needs are to improve these modules to increase the students' enjoyment and improve their performance in statistics. Monte Carlo simulations were used to scientifically justify that data saturation was attained by the survey study. This is an objective reproducible method to determine if a sample size is large enough to ensure that important themes are not missed. It is clear from the students' responses that they do not enjoy being taught in the same way students were taught statistics years ago. Statistics education needs to change to keep up with changing times and the needs of the new generation. The comments of the students touched on similar topics that are being addressed internationally regarding the instruction and assessment of statistics students; therefore, it will be sensible to implement these recommendations in future.

Early educators' perceptions of play and learning influence whether they adopt responsive roles to facilitate learning in play. While studies have investigated perceptions of play as pedagogical practice and its perceived relevance for learning, few have also interrogated educator learning perceptions, and hence compared these perceptions. This study explored perceptions among South African early educators by contrasting their interview and questionnaire responses. Findings revealed play perceptions encompassing structured, adult-led activities alongside child-managed play. While play was highlighted as active, joyful and chosen, participants emphasised appropriate, real-world play over children's self-directed explorations and make-believe. Learning perceptions presented a span that primarily centred on correctness, followed by children understanding and applying lessons. Surprisingly, less nuance emerged for learning in play: rather than viewing play as a context for practicing and improving, respondents saw play as a 'stage' where children could demonstrate proficiency. Finally, patterns in play and learning perceptions came out more clearly in interviews than the questionnaire. These findings point to a need for alternative at-scale methods when eliciting educator perceptions, and for supporting educators to develop reflected, nuanced notions of play as practice and children's learning in play.

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift in teaching and learning practices. The University of Pretoria in South Africa was not entirely unprepared for this event, since the university's teaching strategy had gradually evolved into a hybrid delivery mode. In the Faculty of Veterinary Science, however, the practical nature of the discipline brought about unique challenges in implementing hybrid-mode teaching and learning methodologies. An intervention was thus required to empower lecturers in the faculty to adapt their teaching methodologies to incorporate the hybrid teaching and learning mode. The aforementioned intervention was gleaned from a professional development framework developed by Brown et al. (2010) with a definite focus on core knowledge, areas of activity and core values. Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the university's educational support department developed and presented a tailor-made course, called "The Mix Matters: Step up your hybrid teaching", to enhance lecturers' hybrid teaching skills. Unknowingly, the workshop amply prepared the lecturers for what was still to come in 2020. The aim was to provide participants with a deep understanding of the complexities involved and the skills required for revising and quality-assuring academic courses for the hybrid-teaching environment. Using a mixed-method research design, this paper elucidates how the training and its learning outcomes inspired the lecturers to implement the hybrid teaching and learning mode that conforms to the University of Pretoria's teaching and learning model. A noticeable paradigm shift was accomplished once the initial skepticism had turned into enthusiasm and positive attitudes.

Physiology students grapple with large amounts of subject content and hence memorize facts to pass examinations. In parallel, students display limited critical-thinking and creative skills, integration abilities, and/or a deeper engagement with subject content. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of introducing active learning methods (cooperative learning) in a relatively large class to final-year undergraduate physiology students (Bachelor of Science stream) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. An assignment designed to enhance active and engaged learning was made available to the students (n = 225) during the second week of a 5-wk cardiovascular physiology series of lectures. Students were instructed to freely form working groups (n = 3/group) and the assignment was due by the end of the module. Student groups were expected and encouraged to continuously work on the assignment (outside class time). Three cooperative learning slots were also created during class time, with the lecturer and postgraduate students acting as guides. After the module, students anonymously completed an electronic questionnaire. This study revealed three major findings in terms of implementing cooperative learning in large classes within a South African context, i.e., (1) relatively good reception by students with some indication of group work; (2) it is logistically feasible in relatively large classes, although adequate support is crucial; and (3) additional measures need to be adopted to ensure its success.

Teachers working in under-resourced contexts struggle to provide psychosocial support to learners. In this article, we focus on 10 teacher participants' reflections of how a transformative action research process enhanced their collective capacity for initiating sustainable learner support. A linked participatory action learning and action research (PALAR)-life design (LD) process initiated at their school with an LD counsellor, assisted them to provide sustainable support at the school. LD enabled teacher participants to build on personal and professional narratives as a foundation for embarking on the PALAR process to attain positive change. LD deepened their psychological understanding of the link between their past and present, which remained a sustainable motivation throughout the PALAR process. Data generated from transcriptions of action learning group discussions and teacher reflections during the project were thematically analysed. Findings suggest that the PALAR-LD process is suitable to enable the sustained addressing of contextual challenges, through the development of action leadership in teachers. Although the LD process has to be initiated together with an LD counsellor, teachers can then sustain the PALAR process on their own, making it both cost-effective and feasible. The framework has value for enhancing learner support in contexts of social and economic adversity.

In this qualitative study, we examine the experiences of South African multilingual learners and one local teacher after participating in a community-based, digital storytelling project on career dreams. A secondary purpose was to uncover the skills, knowledge, and abilities learners used as they created digital stories that reflected their future goals and career dreams. This study adds to the field of language and cultural research by highlighting multilingual learners' reliance on various forms of community cultural wealth CCW. Qualitative data sources included: observational field notes, transcribed participant interviews, transcribed video recordings, and artefacts. Findings illustrate how the learners relied on linguistic, social and aspirational capital to imagine their future identities. They articulated metalinguistic awareness in English and isiXhosa and felt cared for, trusted, and supported. The camp provided overt instruction, scaffolding and a space for learners reimagine their selves. This study illustrates how educators can challenge deficit perspectives and find ways to build on what learners bring to every language and learning experience. CCW theories help better contextualise the cultural capital learners have and how they may use and develop that wealth in their rural school experiences.

This article analyses the perceptions of adult learners towards the use of constructivist approach in teaching and learning in non-formal education (NFE) centres of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The analysis is based on five principles of the constructivist theory of learning-interactive learning, collaborative learning, facilitating learning, authentic learning and learner-centred learning. The researcher used the mixed of stratified and purposive sampling methods to select six NFE centres and 12 (out of 200) learners who studied skills training and became self-employed. The data collection techniques were semi-structured interviews. From learners' perceptions, the findings reveal that the use of the constructivist principles enhanced or influenced adult learners' educational attainment in offering learners with experiences ranging from vocational skills to real-life problem-solving. Therefore, the researchers conclude that adult learners were motivated in learning new skills when facilitated using the constructivist approach. The practical and policy implication of the findings is that adult facilitators and managers of NFE programmes should take into consideration the constructivist approach of teaching and learning when designing the curriculum of non-formal education and training.

First-year undergraduate curricula and their delivery should assist students in the transition from previous learning experiences to learning in higher education. However, the so-called articulation gap or discontinuity between secondary and higher education has been identified as a key structural curriculum problem for first-year success in South Africa and abroad. Valuable insights into this problem came from a recent study that drew on Legitimation Code Theory (LCT). Findings revealed an unexpectedly wide gap between the high school and the university biology curricula. The high school biology curriculum displays minimal movement between context-dependent, simpler meaning and relatively decontextualized, condensed meaning common in first-year biology. LCT Semantics was also found to be a valuable tool for restructuring curricula and pedagogy to intentionally enact semantic movement and thereby a more gradual transition for students from high school to university. This paper reports on an integrative first-year biology project aimed intentionally at taking students' concept knowledge through a wide contextual range, and repeatedly between less and more complex meaning. I reflect on how the project design steers students towards creating semantic movement during their presentations, thereby contributing to cumulative knowledge building and a more gradual transition towards first-year epistemological access.

Scientific inquiry has been advocated as a common curriculum goal in school science education in South Africa, and also throughout the world. In South Africa, the introduction of inquiry-based instruction in a reformed science curriculum has met with serious challenges, such as the under-preparedness of in-service teachers. The purpose of this study was to capture, portray and develop the pedagogical practice of Physical Sciences teachers in inquiry-based teaching using an empowerment evaluation approach. The study is a multiple case study in inquiry-based teaching of three Physical Sciences teachers in South Africa using a mixed methods design. Empowerment evaluation is the use of evaluation concepts, techniques, and findings to foster improvement and self-determination. Underlying an inquiry-based pedagogy is the assumption that science education is not merely about knowing-acquisition, but understanding how scientific knowledge is generated, evaluation of knowledge claims and conducting scientific research. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, a pedagogical orientation instrument, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that through empowerment evaluation, teacher practices in the classroom shifted towards an inquiry-based approach. The empowerment evaluation approach thus offers a viable and sustained form of professional development that is likely to empower teachers in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating what they do.

The high unemployment rate in South Africa compels potential entrepreneurs to start their own businesses in order to survive. Often this is with little or no formal training or education in entrepreneurship. Since problem recognition and problem-solving are amongst the most crucial competencies required for a successful entrepreneurial career, this study aimed to determine whether the application of an extended curriculum with a strong focus on active learning in a business-simulated set-up will enhance this competency. The performance of a specific group of Grade 11 Business Studies learners in this study was measured, both before and after they had been exposed to such an extended curriculum in different experimental settings (intervention). Assessments were done qualitatively through observations and interviews, and quantitatively, by means of question-based scenarios. The findings revealed that the intervention enhanced learners' entrepreneurial competencies concerning problem recognition and problem-solving considerably. This also contributed to these learners' positive approach towards Business Studies. In this article, it is argued that practical exposure in a business-simulated set-up will not only result in enhanced entrepreneurial proficiency in school learners, but also contribute to an accelerated pace of economic growth and job creation in our country.

In comparison to attention given to research methods for education students at postgraduate level, the offering of research methods for education students at undergraduate level is less often considered. Yet, it is agreed that research methods for undergraduate level students is important for shaping student attitudes, learning and achievement in the field of research. In concurrence with the aforementioned, this paper aimed to examine the views and experiences of a conveniently sampled group of 124 undergraduate South African student teachers of a compulsory course in research methods. By following a quantitative research design, the authors determined the sampled students' experiences of research methods, how they value them, and how they perceive the pedagogy, which in this particular instance was "working-in-pairs", to teach research methods. For all three the mentioned facets, the findings reflected positive results. However, the research results also pointed to specific issues which might enrich the teaching and status of research methods for undergraduate level education students.

Large first-year class sizes have resulted in many lecturers adopting coping strategies consisting of direct-transmission mode teaching, reduced practical time, and assessment. Recently several strategies have been implemented in an attempt to improve student participation and active learning; however, these changes have to be facilitated and fostered by faculty and administrators. Consequently, we present the implementation, results, and feedback of a new Biology first-year course run for the period 2005-2008. In this course, the number of lectures was reduced, and the number of more co-operative tutorial and practical-based sessions was increased. The aim of these changes was to promote active participation of students and to encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning. Despite some initial problems, most students and staff were positive about the learning experience, and the skills developed were considered of value to other science courses. Other courses are encouraged to follow this example and move to a reduced lecture and increased interactive tutorial/workshop and practical approach to promote student learning and development.

For higher education institutions to produce graduates capable of contributing to society and the economy in a productive manner, educational emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking. The above necessitates that higher education institutions are able to engage in responsive curriculum design and delivery for enhanced student success and access. Public Administration programmes focus on equipping students to work within the broader government sector, able and capable of delivering public functions responsive to the needs of society. Literature suggests that there are a number of factors which influence the success ratio of any undergraduate programme in the South African context, including, inter alia, increased enrolments, student--staff ratios and the overall decline of professional and intellectual life in the country. Further complicating matters are classes too big to be participatory and crammed syllabi preventing in-depth discussions. The notion of embedding academic literacy development in curriculum design through a scaffolded approach aims to influence the academic performance of students through engaged and active learning in order to attain a higher level of achievement as well as benefit from the process of scaffolding. The research comprises a mixed method approach using a case study of the first-year students enrolled for a Public Administration degree. Data collected included an analysis of 2015, 2016 and 2017 student cohorts in: determining their academic literacy level upon registration (set as a baseline before any academic literacy intervention); tracking their academic performance through their formative and summative assessments (through a scaffolded approach); and reflecting upon their learning through their completion of a semi-structured survey. The research intends to argue that the use of a scaffolded approach to learning enhances epistemic access, which sees students moving beyond propositional, or foundation knowledge to epistemic or reflexive knowledge.

In this study, action research was used over two years to refine the implementation of process-oriented guided inquiry learning for chemistry students in an academic development programme at a research-intensive South African university. Students' responses to guided inquiry were collected based on a three-pillar framework underpinned by cognitive load theory and the information processing model. A mixed methods approach was used to gather data including observations, questionnaire responses, focus group interviews and student assessment results. The findings were exhibited year by year using the analysis tool, 'joint displays'. Findings from the first year of study highlighted student difficulty with factors contributing to extraneous load such as social dynamics, worksheet layout and time required. Revisions addressed these areas of difficulty in the second year with positive results in terms of student behaviour and achievement. Analysis of Year 2 findings led to several recommendations for further guided inquiry revisions to serve novice students in the context of an academic development programme: prior knowledge should be activated to mitigate cognitive overload, relevant language should replace foreign terms to sensitise the perception filter and more explicit scaffolding could be embedded to enrich the student's germane cognitive load during processing.
