Purpose: Due to the limited research on fatherhood and dyspraxia, this study is critical as it highlights the challenges that fathers face in parenting a child that presents with dyspraxia. The purpose of this study is to inform various interventions while simultaneously highlighting a largely neglected area of research. Design/methodology/approach: The principal aim of this study was to explore the subjective challenges that fathers experience in parenting a child that presents with dyspraxia in the Cape Metropole area. This study adopted a qualitative approach utilising an exploratory design to understand and provide in-depth information about fathers' subjective experiences of parenting a child that presents with dyspraxia (Mack et al., 2005). Data were collected using semi-structured individual interviews with fathers. Findings: The authors' findings highlight that fathers' roles are inextricably more complex, shifting between more traditional conceptions such as the provider toward the all giving and nurturing care. Future research would benefit from adopting a more masculinity-focused framework to determine the effect that learning disorders have on constructing and challenging more traditional gendered constructions of what it means to be a man, masculinity and what it means to be a father, fatherhood and fathering. Research limitations/implications: The study was limited to the challenges faced by fathers whose children were engaged in some or other treatment plan. In addition, the study was limited to children who presented with dyspraxia, rather than those who had received an official diagnosis and this relates directly to the obscurity and ambiguity surrounding diagnosis of the disorder itself. Practical implications: The study has shed light in terms of the common features between dyspraxia and that of other developmental disorders. This is further extended to include the comorbidity of this disorder with other learning disabilities. Social implications: Mental health professionals may benefit from identifying the issues raised by fathers within this study and to further aid and support both children and parents in the treatment of dyspraxia. Originality/value : The study has shed much needed light on two very neglected areas -- the area of learning disabilities, in particular, the issue of dyspraxia and second, including fathers' voices in the discussion of their experiences.

Obstetric research in sub-Saharan Africa largely focuses on the material, physical, and psychosocial aspects of pregnancy and childbirth in relation to mothers. This research aimed to address a research gap in terms of fathers' experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, particularly in the context of a medically high-risk pregnancy. Specifically, this article focuses on fathers' interactions with the healthcare system and healthcare professionals throughout the antenatal and neonatal periods. This study was exploratory and qualitative in nature. Eight fathers whose partners had experienced at least one medically high-risk pregnancy participated in semi-structured interviews that were examined using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The findings indicate that fathers' experiences vacillated between healthcare providers being supportive and informative versus them being uncompassionate and not conveying adequate information. Importantly, the distinctions were largely attributed to the type of healthcare facility (i.e. public or private) that was attended. This research offers recommendations to healthcare workers to enhance fathers' experiences during pregnancy and childbirth, especially in potentially traumatic situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiencing adversities has been associated with the use of violence but this has not been explored with filicide offenders in South Africa. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 parents/stepparents/caregivers convicted of child homicide in South Africa, resulting in 49 in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed by means of grounded theory. Using an ecological framework, this study alludes to the widespread and cumulative nature of violence and trauma experiences within multiple domains of the participants' lives. The study highlighted the absence of support in the aftermath of experiencing trauma, possibly resulting in these parents lacking resources to mitigate the sequelae of adverse experiences. This study calls for trauma related, mental health components to be integrated into violence interventions and for these to address the impact of trauma at the individual, family, and societal levels, to prevent the transition from victim to offender. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the most common illnesses among adolescents and adults in developing countries. While research from other countries indicates that a lack of financial, infra-structural and human resources are central determinants of the quality of care for STIs, South African studies suggest that there are also problems in health workers' interactions with STI patients. This study investigates the quality of care for STIs at 24 primary health care (PHC) centres in four provinces of South Africa (SA). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with STI patients and health providers. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of STI patients, and focus group discussions were held with diverse community groupings. Simulated patients also completed questionnaires on the care they received at the centres. Frequencies were computed on close-ended questions in order to describe patterns and trends in the data. Cross-tabulations were calculated to check for gender, provincial and urban-rural differences. Composite scores were also generated for the purpose of comparing quality of care across the different participating groups. Finally, the depth interviews and focus groups were analysed thematically. The results show that PHC centres in SA are relatively well-resourced. However, problems were found in the actual encounter between health workers and STI patients, which severely undermines the quality and effectiveness of treatment. It is strongly recommended that attention be given to health providers, in particular through the provision of further training and support in relation to effective STI management. Background and Problem: Pregnancy is constructed as a joy-filled and natural experience with a taken-for-granted expectation that the outcome will be a healthy baby. However, in South Africa approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage and the stillbirth rate is 24 per 100 live births. Despite the overwhelming statistics, reproductive loss is considered a cultural taboo and continues to be silenced in various ways by the medical fraternity and society in general., Aim: Our study aimed to demonstrate the role that biomedical discourses play in shaping both women's experiences of reproductive loss as well as how those close to them respond to these losses. The study was located within a social constructionist framework., Methods: Seven South African women were recruited via snowball sampling to participate in in-depth interviews. A discourse analysis was conducted to deconstruct hegemonic discourses implicit in the participants' dialogues., Findings: The adoption of medical framing of miscarriage and the social awkwardness of loss framed the participants talk about their miscarriages. Our study highlights the centrality of biomedical discourses in influencing both the experiences of our participants as well shaping social discourses. The adoption of the medical framing of miscarriage were identified in the following themes: no answers to first trimester miscarriage and the normalization of miscarriage. The social awkwardness of loss were identified as lack of cultural scripts, lack of acknowledgement and unhelpful words and actions., Conclusion: The paper highlights the power inherent in medicine and demonstrates how this hegemony pervades societal understandings of reproductive loss.
