Summary: The exotic Tamarix chinensis and T. ramosissima, believed to have been introduced into South Africa in the early 1900s to control erosion on mine dumps, are invading riparian zones and have been proven to hybridise with T. usneoides, which is native to southern Africa. In this study, we document the abundance of invasive Tamarix genotypes in South Africa. Eleven riparian zones from the Northern, Eastern and Western Cape Provinces were surveyed. Three quadrats of 600 m2 each were selected per site. Plant density, canopy cover and tree height were recorded to quantify invasiveness. Leaf samples were randomly collected from an average of eight individuals per site to record genotypes of the invaders. Tamarix density and canopy cover were significantly greater than those of co‐occurring trees and shrubs in Olifants River in De Rust (Western Cape Province). A linear correlation between percentage Tamarix spp. cover and other co‐occurring tree and shrub species showed a strong negative relationship (R2 = 0.78). Genetic analysis showed that the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces have the highest proportion of the exotic Tamarix species and their hybrids. This suggests that these two provinces require urgent management intervention to contain the spread of the weed. The distinctions made between the native and the exotic Tamarix species and their hybrids should also facilitate the testing and future release of potential biological control agents. The sustainability of exotic commercial plantations is dependent on the conservation of soil nutrients, especially on the ancient, leached soils of the tropics, particularly when limited fertilization is practiced. In Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maid. plantations in South Africa, the site is usually burned following harvest and prior to replanting, potentially causing a disruption of soil faunal function and losses of nutrients associated with burning and removal of slash residues. The aim was to study the effect of fire on nutrient dynamics and invertebrate faunal composition. The in situ nitrogen and phosphorus mineralization rates and invertebrate faunal composition were measured in six randomly located plots — three burned and three unburned — prior to and after a low-intensity fire. Results indicate that within the burned plots, phosphorus availability was enhanced 10-fold within the first month following the fire. Invertebrate faunal diversity was low both prior to and after burning, with ants constituting the highest number. Invertebrate faunal composition was more markedly influenced by season than by the fire, with millipedes present in the majority of plots in spring and ants dominating in summer. Campuloclinium macrocephalum is native to Central and South America, but is a highly invasive weed in South Africa, where it is commonly known as the 'pompom weed'. It is targeted for biological control, the success of which will depend on host specificity and biotype compatibility to its full genetic diversity in South Africa. We investigated the genetic diversity and phylogeography of 52 specimens from across South Africa, 14 from Argentina and three from Brazil using nuclear ribosomal ITS regions. We further explored the AFLP marker diversity in 54 South African, 25 Argentine and three Brazilian specimens. Maximum parsimony analysis of the ITS sequence data produced an unresolved phylogeny. However, three haplotypes were recognised via network analysis. All South African, one Brazilian and all bar one of the Argentine individuals shared a single haplotype. AFLP analyses generated two genetic clusters with a low net nucleotide distance of 0.115 and further revealed that most plants were a mixture of alleles from these two genetic clusters. Although there was a significant genetic variation among the populations, genetic differentiation and mean heterozygosity were low, suggesting that clonal reproduction may be occurring. The current South African populations may therefore be clonal products with different proportions of genetic admixture introduced more than once. The original point of entry appears to be Gauteng, South Africa. Long-distance dispersal appears to have played a major role in its spread across South Africa.
