Strong expectations exist for the selectivity of migration along key demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, and education, which are often linked to social and economic drivers. Scholars acknowledge, however, that migratory behavior is also likely to be selective on characteristics that are less readily observable. This research note expands the list by examining "grit"—in other words, a measure of perseverance in the face of adversity. We test for a relationship between South African rural–urban migration, net of other standard covariates, and an established composite psychosocial measure of grit. We draw on two waves of survey data originating from a demographic surveillance platform but with respondents followed irrespective of their subsequent geographic mobility. Simple bivariate regressions suggest that grit is strongly associated with migration. Using multivariate models, we continue to detect a statistically significant association of migration with grit in the presence of controls. When the model is further refined to stratify by sex and separate geographic destinations, a sex differential emerges, with grit being more predictive for females. We conclude by suggesting that such findings should encourage broader inquiries that consider grit and other psychological characteristics, particularly investigations that might help further illuminate differentials by the experience of gender. The Migrant Health Follow-Up Study (MHFUS) is a longitudinal study conducted in South Africa to examine the consequences of migration and urbanization on individual health. The study has collected data on education, employment, migration, household composition, health, health service use, and diet through four study waves between 2018 and 2022. The MHFUS aims to understand the impact of migration and urbanization on non-communicable and infectious diseases and treatment continuity. Africa is experiencing rapid urbanization, making it one of the most urbanized continents in the world. This trend is particularly evident in the Southern African regional block. With the ongoing push for enhanced regional integration, it is anticipated that there would be a rise in the migration of individuals within the region. The escalating pace of urbanization calls for a reassessment of future cities and the implications of the rural-urban split on the establishment of sustainable human settlements. This article initially analyzes the patterns of migration within the Southern Africa Development Community. Furthermore, an analysis is conducted on the factors that contribute to the significant internal migration inside member states. Furthermore, the article examines the connection between migration and urbanization in the region once again. The article employs qualitative and quantitative methodologies to examine the consequences of migration and urbanization on both the locations from which people migrate and the areas where they settle. The primary factors contributing to migration include the pursuit of economic opportunity, political instability, access to education, and climate-induced disasters. Migration and urbanization have both gotten worse in the SADC region at the same time, as shown by empirical literature, official migration documents, and quantitative time series data from the World Development Indicators. This suggests that migration causes more people to move to cities. The rise in population has led to inadequate housing, resulting in an increase in slums that surpasses the projected capacity of cities. This article suggests promoting infrastructure development that facilitates employment creation in the nations or districts of origin in order to prevent a one-way movement of migrants. In this article, I interrogate the concept of othering by foregrounding xenophobia, which has been 'trending' since the dawn of democracy in South Africa. I use lived experiences to assert that xenophobia is not confined to tussles between 'foreign' nationals and South African -citizens but also manifests as 'local xenophobia' where South African citizens from 'elsewhere' in the country are maligned by 'locals' in areas to which they migrate. To underscore the ubiquitous and multifaceted nature of othering, and because it resonates with literature on -xenophobia, I discuss sobriquets/nicknames as one example among various manifestations of otherness. Furthermore, I contend that self-subjugation as an unconscious process is, possibly, the pillar of othering and, that every human is a tacit or overt otherer. Researches have been interrogating the influence of international migration on life satisfaction but ignoring the influence of internal migration on life satisfaction. This study therefore examined the influence of inter-provincial migration on life satisfaction in South Africa. Data for the study were from the fifth and latest wave of the National Income Dynamics Survey (NIDS) conducted in South Africa in 2017. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson Chi-square and ordinary least-square (OLS) regression. The results showed that the migrants (mean = 5.73) had significantly (Chi = 48.8; p < 0.001) better life satisfaction than non-migrants (mean = 5.54). In addition, there existed significant variations in the level of happiness (Chi = 9.97; p < 0.002), subjective income classification (Chi = 16.8; p < 0.001) and perceived physical health (Chi = 8.65; p < 0.002). Finally, the OLS coefficients showed that respondents with average and above average subjective income classification, respondents with good perceived physical health, respondents with happier happiness level, females, married respondents, non-Blacks, respondents earning higher than R5000, household with 7 + persons and province of residence were associated with increased life satisfaction among migrants and non-migrants. Climate change and global warming have led to an increased incidence of flooding across the world. Against the backdrop of the recent devastating floods in the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa, this paper explores psychotraumatology of natural disasters. In particular, we explore the impact of internal migration in South Africa, as well as apartheid spatial planning and inequality on the consequences of the flooding. We also focus on the psychotraumatology resulting from flooding, in general, and in particular on the victims of the flooding in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. We conclude that the psychopathological consequences of such natural disasters are ignored even though they seriously affect the people concerned. While expanded HIV testing is needed in South Africa, increasing accurate self-report of HIV status is an essential parallel goal in this highly mobile population. If self-report can ascertain true HIV-positive status, persons with HIV (PWH) could be linked to life-saving care without the existing delays required by producing medical records or undergoing confirmatory testing, which are especially burdensome for the country's high prevalence of circular migrants. We used Wave 1 data from The Migration and Health Follow-Up Study, a representative adult cohort, including circular migrants and permanent residents, randomly sampled from the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System in a rural area of Mpumalanga Province. Within the analytic sample (n = 1,918), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of self-report were calculated with dried blood spot (DBS) HIV test results as the standard. Among in-person participants (n = 2,468), 88.8% consented to DBS-HIV testing. HIV prevalence was 25.3%. Sensitivity of self-report was 43.9% (95% CI: 39.5–48.5), PPV was 93.4% (95% CI: 89.5–96.0); specificity was 99.0% (95% CI: 98.3–99.4) and NPV was 83.9% (95% CI: 82.8–84.9). Self-report of an HIV-positive status was predictive of true status for both migrants and permanent residents in this high-prevalence setting. Persons who self-reported as living with HIV were almost always truly positive, supporting a change to clinical protocol to immediately connect persons who say they are HIV-positive to ART and counselling. However, 56% of PWH did not report as HIV-positive, highlighting the imperative to address barriers to disclosure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the association between internal migration, as a form of residential mobility, and teenage fertility in South Africa. Data were from the 2001 and 2011 South African censuses, n2001 = 335 065 and n2011 = 316 640, age range 12 to 19, black teenagers= 83.5% and 84.3%, respectively. Results showed that between 2001 and 2011 residential mobility increased by 12%. The teenage fertility rate significantly decreased from 47 to 39 births per 1 000 12-19-year-old females between the same period. In both years teenage fertility was at higher levels among girls that were older, employed, double orphans, and who had no schooling. Random-intercept multilevel binary logistic regression revealed that the risk of teenage fertility independently decreased as the level of residential mobility increased in communities. The protective effect of residential mobility on the risk of teenage fertility remained in 2011 but was approximately halved in magnitude compared to the effect in 2001. Findings suggest residential mobility has a protective nature that assists with teenage fertility control, and are consistent with the residential move social capital hypothesis about households that migrate to areas with better opportunities for teenagers. Home, crisis and migration have defined the experience and concept of being post-colonial Zimbabwe(an) for the past two decades. Much has been written about the post-coloniality of this entangled experience and about how, in particular, literary fiction re-discourses normative perspectives of the Zimbabwean crisis, the home, the unhomely and trans-national out-migration. Rarely considered a serious discursive site from which to (re)know the intricacies inhabiting versions, configurations and symbolisms of the concept of home (especially in the context of crisis and mobility), the Zimbabwean short story has largely remained underexplored. This article recentres the short story of migration (Farai Mpofu's 'The Letter' and NoViolet Mkha's 'Shamisos') in examining how, as socio-cultural and geo-political constructs, diaspora and 'home' homes manifest and orchestrate temporalities, processes, relations, attitudes, places, people, and discourses that shape a certain understanding of Zimbabwe as a contested post-colonial 'home'. On the one hand, the protagonists in the stories live precariously in 'refuge' new homes (Botswana and South Africa respectively), and on the other, they attempt to make sense of their precarity through traumatic re-memories of their haunting 'home' home (Zimbabwe). We interpret this connection between these unstable 'homes' using a conceptual frame that we term 'ambivalent continuum of precarity', a concept we coined from the notions of 'precarity of place' and 'continuum of precarity' advanced by Susan Banki and Julia Ann McWilliams and Sally Wesley Bonet respectively. Our analysis of literary representations of the home(s) therefore focuses on their complex, multiple and shifting layers, signs, symbolisms and ontologies as constructs that reflect on the crisis of post-coloniality manifest in precarious mobilities and ambivalent homes. There is a huge demand for housing in Johannesburg, South Africa, due to significant in-migration as well as the legacy of apartheid. Rental housing supply in Johannesburg is particularly constrained. Despite this, little is known about the formal rental market in terms of middle income access. Thus, this explorative qualitative study seeks to partially address this research gap. Results show that specific legislative constraints, namely the National Credit Act and the Prevention of Illegal Eviction and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act, have created an imbalance between the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, driving onerous credit checks and documentary demands, all of which are inadvertently excluding individuals from the formal rental market. Thus, while race previously excluded many from the suburbs under study, class now seems to be a significant factor in terms of who can access rental property. The acceleration of out-migration from rural to urban areas has a negative impact on the productivity and development of rural agriculture in developing countries. This is because out-migration hinders surplus labour and engenders low rural agricultural income. This study reviews literature on the impact and implications of out-migration on rural agriculture in South Africa, a developing country. The study is qualitative and applies the principles of case-study research for design purposes. The research is underpinned by Lee’s (1966) PushPull Theory. Lee’s Push-Pull Theory has been effective in guiding arguments and discussions on the impact and implications of out-migration on rural agriculture. The findings reveal that the loss of human capital through out-migration results in low rural agricultural productivity in developing countries. The changing climate conditions also constitute a primary push factor for people’s out-migration from rural areas, resulting in rural agriculture’s loss of human capital. This is because people involved in rural agriculture lack alternative strategies that they can use to cope with the consequences of climate change. Nonetheless, outmigration could contribute positively to rural agriculture through remittances that people could use to purchase agricultural inputs. Hence, rural dwellers need to be provided with appropriate financial literacy concerning the relationship between migration and remittances. The main objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between two types of property‐related crime and some socio‐economic, demographic and deterrence factors. It employs the conditional autoregressive specification to account for spatial autocorrelation that characterises property‐related crime data, which are aggregated up to the level of municipality. First, the analysis confirms the presence of spatial autocorrelation in the data, which means that neighbouring municipalities exhibit similar levels of property crime rates. In addition, and most importantly, empirical findings show that internal migration, youth and education are important predictors of property‐related crime across municipalities in South Africa for the period under consideration. The Kembata-Tembaro, Hadiya and Welayta are one of the highly migratory zones in Ethiopia. While they all enjoy similarities along population densities, land holdings, agro-ecologies and employment opportunities; the migration patterns in these areas differ in that, while the first two are known for international migration mainly to the Republic of South Africa, the latter is known for its internal migration with few international migrations. The Migration Network Theory was adopted to assess the role of information and social networks in triggering migration and the role they played in shaping patters of migration from the study area. A descriptive research with mixed methods approach was employed. Results show the importance of information and social networks in triggering migration decisions, serving as immediate causes as opposed to the root causes of migration. This study has concluded that information and social networks have served as factors triggering migration from study area. Background: In South Africa, human geographic mobility is high as people engage in both permanent and temporary relocation, predominantly from rural to urban areas. Such mobility can compromise healthcare access and utilisation. The objective of this paper is to explore healthcare utilisation and its determinants in a cohort of internal migrants and permanent residents (non-migrants) originating from the Agincourt sub-district in South Africa's rural northeast.Methods: A 5-year cohort study of 3800 individuals aged 18 to 40 commenced in 2017. Baseline data have been collected from 1764 Agincourt residents and 1334 temporary, mostly urban-based, migrants, and are analysed using bivariate analyses, logistic and multinomial regression models, and propensity score matching analysis.Results: Health service utilisation differs sharply by migrant status and sex. Among those with a chronic condition, migrants had 0.33 times the odds of non-migrants to have consulted a health service in the preceding year, and males had 0.32 times the odds of females of having used health services. Of those who utilised services, migration status was further associated with the type of healthcare utilised, with 97% of non-migrant rural residents having accessed government facilities, while large proportions of migrants (31%) utilised private health services or consulted traditional healers (25%) in migrant destinations. The multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that, in the presence of controls, migrants had 8.12 the relative risk of non-migrants for utilising private healthcare (versus the government-services-only reference category), and 2.40 the relative risk of non-migrants for using a combination of public and private sector facilities. These findings of differential utilisation hold under statistical adjustment for relevant controls and for underlying propensity to migrate.Conclusions: Migrants and non-migrants in the study population in South Africa were found to utilise health services differently, both in overall use and in the type of healthcare consulted. The study helps improve upon the limited stock of knowledge on how migrants interface with healthcare systems in low and middle-income country settings. Findings can assist in guiding policies and programmes to be directed more effectively to the populations most in need, and to drive locally adapted approaches to universal health coverage. Migration is an important component of population change in South Africa. Unfortunately, like in most countries, reliable data on migration is not readily available. The aim of this study is to estimate net internal migration for provinces in South Africa using Census Survival Ratio Method (CSRM). This method is underutilized in demographic research in the country and is based on the reported age-sex statistics collected in the census and demographic surveys. The method compares the projected population for each age and sex based on the first censuses and the reported population at the second census. In absence of errors in the age statistics the difference between the projected and enumerated populations could be attributed to net migration. The results indicate that during the intercensal period 1996-2001, Gauteng and Western Cape were the major receiving provinces whereas the other remaining provinces were the sending provinces in the country. The results are consistent with findings based on other estimation procedures and correspond to nature of social and economic development in the country. One policy implication of the study is that efforts should continue being made to make the sending provinces more attractive so as to reduce the inflow of people to the crowded and more affluent provinces of Gauteng and Western Cape. Hypertension prevalence is on the rise in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like South Africa, and migration and its concomitant urbanization are often considered to be associated with this rise. However, relatively little is known about the relationship between blood pressure (BP) and internal migration - a highly prevalent population process in LMICs. This study employed data for a group of 194 adult men and women from an original pilot dataset drawn from the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System in north-east South Africa conducted in 2012. Migrants in the sample were identified, tracked and interviewed. The relationship between BP and migration distance and the number of months an individual spent away from his/her home village was estimated using robust OLS regression, controlling for a series of socioeconomic, health and behavioural characteristics. It was found that migrants who moved a longer distance and for longer durations had significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures compared with shorter-term migrants and those who remained nearby or in their home village. These associations remained robust and statistically significant when adjusting for measures of socioeconomic conditions, as well as body mass index and the number of meals consumed per day. Migration, both in terms of distance and time away, explained significant variation in the blood pressure of migrants in this typical South African context. The findings suggest the need for further studies of the nutritional and psycho-social factors associated with geographic mobility that may be important to understand rising hypertension levels in LMICs. A review of South African literature on crime confirms the lack of a study that considers the impact of migration on the crime rate in the country. The high levels of crime in South Africa aside, additional motivation behind the study has been the increasing rhetoric in media and by politicians insinuating the prominent role of foreign immigrants in the high crime levels of the country. While this is the first attempt to study this relationship in the South African context, it also stands apart from existing studies undertaken in the developed countries by accounting for both internal migrants as well as foreign immigrants. Further, the study claims the use of multi‐level regression estimations as an improvement from the existing studies on the issue by accounting for variance clustering across different spatial levels. In all the estimated models, internal migrant ratio came out as being positively and significantly related to crime rates across five different crime categories, with the sole exception of sexual crime rate. There was no evidence of foreign immigrant ratio impacting on crime rate in any of the crimes analysed except crime relating to property. Antecedent conditions and geology influence bedform dynamics and other sea-bed bottom current interactions on the continental shelf. However, the nature of this influence has not been well constrained, particularly on current-swept shelves. A variety of bedforms (narrow and broad sediment ribbons, comet marks and subaqueous dunes) are revealed by high resolution multibeam bathymetry and side scan sonar surveys of the mid-to outer "Wild Coast" shelf along the east coast of South Africa. The bedforms demonstrate a relationship to the geological framework of the shelf. The various bedforms occur in conjunction with bedrock-incised valleys and topographic depressions filled with transgressive sediment and bounded laterally by prominent rocky outcrops. These sediment sources are siphoned and mobilised by the Agulhas Current to create the contemporary shelf bedforms. Mechanisms of bedform development are associated with the interplay between the loci of sediment supply and associated grain size on the one hand and the current velocity and pathway of the Agulhas Current on the other. Sediment ribbons form parallel to the flow path of the Agulhas Current in narrow or broad forms that can be differentiated primarily by sediment grain size. With increased sediment availability from nearby bedrock-bound depocenters these transition along shelf to 2D dunes. A cross-shelf transition to 3D dunes on the outer shelf is marked by increased current velocity, grain size and decreased sediment availability outside of rock-bound depocenters. Rock outcrops affect current velocity and flow paths sufficiently to favour localised deposition over sediment stripping from the shelf. Comet mark forms develop from interactions between availability of finer sediment and perturbations of current flow paths by rock outcrops. This creates conditions that favour localised sediment scouring over deposition. With variability in sediment size, grain size and current flow, dunes fluctuate between active (sharp crested), inert (round crested) and degraded (flat crested) states. A lack of available sediment to replenish outer shelf dunes sees prolonged stasis, eventual dune splitting and breakdown under progressive current influence. Mid-shelf dunes have a greater capacity to recover from periods of stasis and short-term degradation due to greater availability of sediment. Dune migration rates are slower than previous regional estimates. Reasons for this are inconclusive and may be multifaceted. Possible reasons include inertial constraints, prolonged downcurrent reformation periods and longer dune relaxation associated with coarser grain sizes and a paucity of sediment on the outer shelf coupled with the Agulhas Current core migrating further in and offshore. This paper demonstrates that internal migration may be contributing to rising non-communicable disease risk in low- and middle-income countries in gendered and geographically differentiated ways. With 2018 baseline data from the Migrant Health Follow-Up Study, we investigate the relationship between internal migration and elevated blood pressure (BP) among 2163 rural-origin men and women in South Africa, testing for sex differences. To examine the influence of place, we test whether the migration-BP relationship differs by migrants' destination locations, controlling for household composition, social support, prior migration, and housing quality. We find that migration is associated with elevated BP only among women, and that this association is greatest for migrants living in Tembisa township. The impact of internal migration on regional income inequality of the receiving areas has hitherto gone largely unstudied. This dearth of literature is especially surprising because income inequality and in-migration into urban centres of growth are two issues that many developing economies are faced with and tackling these issues effectively involves understanding the interactions between these two related phenomena. This study is therefore a first attempt to analyse the impact of internal in-migration on receiving areas and is placed in the context of South Africa. Based on a conceptual analysis, the study argues that in-migration into the formal sector of the receiving areas will in general reduce inequality while in-migration into the informal or unemployed sector increases inequality. Using individual panel data the study further tests empirically at the district level the impact of in-migration and finds that rising urban inequality in urban areas can be attributed at least in part to rural-urban migration. This works through both the wage as well as employment channel. This study explored the relationship between satisfaction with life and internal migration intention in South Africa. Data were from three waves of the National Income Dynamics Surveys (NIDS) conducted in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Analyses of data were by descriptive statistics, Pearson Chi square, ordinary least square and binary logistic regressions. The regression coefficient of life satisfaction was 3.29 in 2008, 2.96 in 2010, and 3.10 in 2012. Well-being variables significantly predicted life satisfaction, even as life satisfaction was negatively correlated with intention to migrate. The significant predictor of life satisfaction was race while the intention to migrate was influenced by life satisfaction in 2008 (OR=0.95), 2010 (OR= 1.06) and 2012 (OR=0.98). Other predictors of intention to migrate were age, race and educational status. These findings will be relevant in the assessment and evaluation of the efficacy of policy interventions and strategies aimed at improving satisfaction with life in the country. This paper quantifies the short to medium term impact of rural-urban migration on an individual’s subjective well-being in South Africa between 2008 and 2012. We work through different econometric specifications; using instrumental variables to control for endogeneity caused by shock-induced self-selection, and Propensity Score Matching to control for migration self-selection bias. We find that rural-urban migration leads to a decrease in subjective well-being by 8.3 per cent. We suspect that the decreased well-being is a result of false expectations and changing relative groups used to peg aspirations, as well as the emotional cost of being away from family and a home environment. The 2011 South African national census shows a cohort of young adults comprising an increasing share of the population. This finding is borne out in longitudinal data from the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). This primarily descriptive paper uses the Agincourt HDSS to examine the migration, employment and unemployment patterns in young adults. The study reveals high levels of temporary labour migration linking rural areas to metropolitan areas and secondary urban places. The type of work conducted by young adults in the Agincourt population is predominantly unskilled labour for both sexes. However, there is some evidence of female employment increasing in more educated sectors. Across all working ages there is pronounced unemployment, but the main pressure is felt by the younger adult population. Education and skills development for both sexes should be strengthened to support the country's efforts to vastly improve labour force participation amongst the youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the impact of climate variability on internal migration flows in post-apartheid South Africa. We combine information from South African censuses and climatic data to build a panel database covering the waves 1997–2001 and 2007–2011. The database enables the examination of the effect of spatiotemporal variability in temperature and precipitation on inter-district migration flows defined by five-year intervals. We employ a gravity approach where bilateral migration flows are explained by climate variability at the origin, along with a number of geographic, socio-economic and demographic factors traditionally identified as potential drivers of migration. Overall, we find that an increase in positive temperature extremes as well as positive and negative excess rainfall at the origin act as a push effect and enhance out-migration. However, the significance of the effect of climate on migration greatly varies by migrant characteristics. Particularly, flows of black and low-income South African migrants are strongly influenced by climatic variables whereas those of white and high-income migrants exhibit a weak impact. This paper examines internal migration and settlement change in both national and sub-district settings of South Africa using Census 2011 data and an external data source, namely the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). The period under consideration is the 5 years between 2006 and 2011. Census 2011 data revealed that 5,3% of South Africa's population has migrated internally between 2006 and 2011, with metropolitan areas being the significant origin and destination locations of internal migrants. In general, the Census analysis indicates that more urban settlement types appear to gain population as a result of net migration, while the less urban settlement types tend to lose population to migration. However, migration trends evident from the national census data present a blend of permanent and temporary moves; the Agincourt HDSS analysis reveals a large proportion of migration in contemporary South Africa that is temporary (comprising approximately 25% of the population). Such migration is primarily economically driven and is undertaken by males (60% of 30- to 49-year-olds) and increasingly, young adult females (33% of 20- to 39-year-olds in 2010/2011). The study concludes that metropolitanisation is a key finding at the national level, however, a proportion of this urban-ward movement is temporary. This paper examines student mobility in South Africa via the narratives of three immigrant students who are registered for a post-graduate degree at the University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN). Their narratives highlight the complexities of assimilation and accommodation in the context of identity, belonging and citizenship. For many student immigrants, particularly from within Africa, South Africa is seen as the 'New York' of Africa, with good infrastructure, a highly developed educational system and enduring political stability. These 'pull' factors aided by 'push' factors in their home countries such as poverty, political violence, lack of basic amenities, has collectively led to an influx of cross border student mobility. This paper identifies and discusses the 'push' and 'pull' factors of cross-border student mobility and the challenges and constraints they experience at UKZN in the context of language barriers, academic facilities, identity, transient families and xenophobia. The findings of this paper concludes that student mobility at the University of Kwazulu-Natal share similar trajectorial paths in the context of decision-making and assimilation in the host country. The paper also argues that to some extent, higher education is used as a channel for emigration to South Africa. The narratives in this study provide an opportunity to document the lives of immigrant students from their own perspective, thereby providing some insight into the complexities of student mobility and its overall implications for South African tertiary institutions. We began with the premise that South African recent migrants from rural to urban areas experience relatively lower rates of participation in formal labour markets compared to local residents in urban communities, and that these migrants are overrepresented in the informal labour market and in the unemployment sector. This means that rural to urban migrants are less likely than locals to be found in formal employment and more likely to be found in informal employment and among the unemployed. Using perspectives from Development Economics we explore the South African National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) panel datasets of 2008 and 2010, which only provide a perspective on what has happened between 2008 and 2010. We find that while migrants in general experience positive outcomes in informal labour markets, they also experience positive outcomes in formal markets, which is contrary to expectations. We also find that there are strong links between other indicators of performance in the labour market. Earned incomes are closely associated with migration decisions and educational qualifications (e.g. a matric certificate) for respondents between the ages of 30 and 60 years. The youth (15 to 30 years old) and senior respondents (over the age of 60) are the most disadvantaged in the labour market. The disadvantage is further reflected in lower earned incomes. This is the case even though the youth are most likely to migrate. We conclude that migration is motivated by both push (to seek employment) and pull (existing networks or marriage at destination) factors. For public policy, the emerging patterns -- indicative and established -- are important for informing strategies aimed at creating employment and developing skills for the unemployed, migrants and especially the youth. This paper surveys frameworks of labour migration in southern Africa and determines South Africa's policy responses to inflows of migrants from seven neighbouring countries. Legislations, policy reports and scientific publications on migration were thoroughly reviewed and interviews and correspondence with key policymakers were conducted. Statistical analyses of data on foreign worker recruitments and permits issued by South Africa's Department of Home Affairs were also performed. The absence of a migration protocol in southern Africa suggests SADC Members have not implemented the African Union's migration policy basic guidelines. Two systems coexist in southern Africa that complicate migration governance: a South Africa-managed bilateral migration policy, and aspirations for a formal SADC-managed migration policy. Bilateral agreements between South Africa and neighbours have established a labour migration system that dims prospects for a regional migration policy. SACU Members could establish a two-tier policy to achieve free movement while maintaining managed migration policy outside SACU. Urban growth boundaries (UGBs) or 'urban edges' as they are known in South Africa have been widely implemented by cities internationally with the intention of curbing urban sprawl. However, technical complexities and high levels of contestation frequently present challenges for their implementation. In particular, it is important to ensure that their demarcation includes appropriate land reserves to accommodate urban growth. Drawing the boundary too tightly can stifle economic growth and lead to land price increases, while including too much land within the UGB may result in unchecked urban sprawl and its associated environmental, social and financial costs. The aims of this paper are firstly to review international and local literature with reference to the merits and appropriateness of UGB policies and secondly to consider methods used by cities internationally to determine UGBs and describe the method used by the City of Cape Town to review its UGB in 2010. The Cape Town method evaluates land reserves against urban growth forecasts and is consistent with methods generally used by US cities. However, a number of adaptations for local and rapidly urbanising third world environments are outlined. The Cape Town method is evaluated with reference to the literature and lessons learnt are discussed. Key findings include the value of rigorous, defensible methods and clear policy guidelines in a contested environment, the value of integrating UGB reviews within broader land-use planning processes, the usefulness of information generated for broader urban planning processes and the utility of accurate information on past trends in moderating growth expectations. Background Correctly identifying the determinants of generalized HIV epidemics is crucial to bringing down ongoing high HIV incidence in these countries. High rates of migration are believed to be an important determinant of HIV prevalence. This study has two aims. Firstly, it evaluates the ecological association between levels of internal and international migration and national peak HIV prevalence using thirteen variables from a variety of sources to capture various aspects of internal and international migration intensity. Secondly, it examines the relationship between circular migration and HIV at an individual and population-level in South Africa. Methods Linear regression was used to analyze the association between the various measures of migration intensity and peak national HIV prevalence for 141 countries and HIV prevalence by province and ethnic group in South Africa. Results No evidence of a positive ecological association between national migration intensity and HIV prevalence was found. This remained the case when the analyses were limited to the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. On the whole, countries with generalized HIV epidemics had lower rates of internal and external migration. Likewise, no association was found between migration and HIV positivity at an individual or group-level in South Africa. This study investigated the association between internal migration and teenage fertility in South Africa. Data were from the 2007 and 2016 South African community surveys, N2007= 89800 and N2016=239733, age range 12 to 19, black teenagers= 81.5% and 89.4%, respectively. Results showed that between 2007 and 2016 internal migration levels decreased by 2% nationally, but increased for Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces. Teenage fertility levels decreased in all provinces except the Northern Cape in the study period. In both years teenage fertility was observed at higher levels among girls that were older, heads of households, and who were in secondary schooling. Random-intercept multilevel binary logistic regression revealed that the risk of teenage fertility differed between more rural and urban provinces. In provinces that were predominantly rural the risk of teenage pregnancy increased as community-levels of internal migration increased while the risk decreased as internal migration increased in provinces that were predominantly urban. Findings suggest that the effects of internal migration on teenage pregnancy are largely dependent on the local context making it necessary to create interventions that are context-specific at sub-national levels.

The paper examines the pattern and nature of migration into the Rustenburg area in the North West Province, South Africa. It is important to gain an understanding of the processes of internal migration within South Africa in general and Rustenburg in particular, because migration is an intrinsic element of the development process, which may generate benefits or problems for host and sending areas. Rustenburg is the largest producer of platinum in the world. Previous studies show that movement has been occurring between other places and Rustenburg villages and townships around the mines have been the main receiving areas. People migrate to Rustenburg because they are attracted by the rapidly growing mining and tourism activities in the area. Using migration figures from the 1996 and 2001 censuses into Rustenburg based on usual and previous place of residence, the study established that the majority of the migrants are from within the province. The circulation of workers between their tribal areas and commercial/industrial enterprises is a familiar phenomenon. The study recommends that in order to reduce negative impacts of migration such as social, political, economic and health challenges, factors that trigger migration ought to be addressed. Street youth have been part of South Africa’s cities since the 1980s, maintaining a visible and mobile presence. Contemporary adaptations to urban governance strategies in Cape Town have resulted in management practices that are creating challenges for street youth’s lives. This paper explores these challenges which have emerged through strategies to clean up the city and are aimed at reducing youth’s visible presence on the streets. Through an examination of street youth’s lives, this paper conceptualises four ways in which their mobilities have changed, dramatically affecting their everyday practices. The paper develops theoretical understandings of street youth’s lives by identifying ‘new’ street geographies. This moves away from current conceptualisations of street children/youth as having a visible presence on the streets and rather expresses street life as hidden and marginalised, pushed into less wealthy parts of the urban landscape. Existing knowledge about historical patterns of black internal migration in South Africa is incomplete, primarily because of the lack of good life course studies as well as the apartheid government's suppression and censoring of data. This article provides a comprehensive picture of historical internal migration patterns with an analysis of a unique individual retrospective life history data set. This sample of the black population, collected in 2000, is the only known nationally representative life history data for South Africa; it includes all residential moves for each individual during his/her lifetime. Various mobility outcomes are analyzed: moves within/across provinces, moves within/across rural and urban areas, forced moves, moves with a nuclear family and individual moves. The results indicate that migration significantly increased among black South Africans during the last half of the twentieth century, and that this increase began before the Pass Laws were repealed in 1986 and well before the official end of apartheid in 1991 or the first free election in 1994. The timing of this increase in migration rates suggests that migration in defiance of the Pass Laws (albeit a dangerous and desperate proposition) was a way of life for many black South Africans. Informed largely by the Critical Discourse Analysis framework, this article analyses flyers and posters that advertise traditional/alternative healing distributed and posted respectively in and around Johannesburg's Central Business District. Paying close attention to text and context, the paper analyses the advertising of medicines and practices referred to as traditional/alternative. The advertising, which employs modern media and advertising techniques, is as complex as the multiplicity of religious, secular and corporeal interventions offered by the healers. The ubiquitous presence of flyers and the continued pasting of posters onto city structures, despite warnings by the city of Johannesburg, are an expression of resistance to city authorities. The paper posits that what may appear to be downright charlatanism by the advertisers might in fact be a viable alternative to biomedicine, especially in Johannesburg's context of high in-migration with its attendant plethora of social and health problems. Thus the healing services that the healers advertise pose a challenge to allopathic medicine, suggesting that illness needs to be understood in a broad sense. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Cultural geography, as a label for a sub-discipline or a mode of enquiry, has little purchase in South Africa. Studies of the cultural production of place are, however, undertaken in multiple fields, usefully if loosely grouped under the banner of 'cultural studies'. I argue that geographers have much of value to contribute to this field, particularly through engaging in debates that currently enliven cultural geography elsewhere. In particular, the geographical work inspired by performance studies can help balance the dominance of discursive frameworks in South African cultural studies of place. Using Nigel Thrift's non-representational theory as a springboard, I suggest that a materialist perspective on cultural production may productively re-orient the dominant ontology and epistemology of both geographical and cultural research into South African place-making, but that this need not rely on an opposition between representational and non-representational approaches. I argue that this dualism can be displaced by the concept of 'embodied stories', which allows the social, narrative, referential and symbolic functions of performance to be knitted together with its irreducible materiality. ABSTRACT Conceptualisation of child residential mobility has been influenced by developed country contexts; however, trends and models for movement are likely to differ in transitional societies. This paper uses event-history analysis to model the residential movements of South African urban children in the Birth to Twenty cohort over their first 14 years of life. Associations with mobility of children are tested over a set of domains relating to the child, the child's primary caregiver, and the child's household. A methodological approach is proposed for analysing repeated moves using multi-level models, which are adapted to maximise information from children who dropped out of the study or who had long gaps in their residential histories. The results indicate mobility is associated with economic disadvantage with children whose primary caregivers had no formal education and who lived in households with fewer assets and less access to services being more likely to change residence. The study suggests potential risks for mobile children in urban environments who may be more likely to be exposed to disruption or compromised living conditions. This article extends previous work on family structure and children's education by conceptualizing migration as a distinct form of family disruption that reduces parental input but brings substantial economic benefits through remittances. It examines the multiple and countervailing effects of migration on schooling in the context of substantial migration and limited educational opportunities for blacks in South Africa. The receipt of remittances substantially increases black children's school attendance, but has no such effect for whites. The effect for blacks is in part attributable to improved household economic conditions that increase household educational spending and reduce the demand for child labor. We also find a negative effect of parental absence due to migration, but it is largely cushioned by inflows of remittances. Sensitivity analyses using propensity score methods and contextual fixed-effect modeling suggest that the beneficial effect of remittances is relatively robust. We find further that remittances help ameliorate inter-familial socioeconomic inequality in schooling. Finally, we evaluate possible temporal changes and show that the positive and equalizing effects of remittances persisted during and after the apartheid regime. We conclude that labor migration and remittances, as institutionalized family strategies adopted by many blacks, help reconfigure structural opportunities in the educational stratification process in South Africa. This investigation draws on a continued research program on understanding second homes in South Africa. Processes of mobility, migration, and circulation are explored within this type of tourism. Thereafter, a research agenda is proposed in terms of the same processes as recreational second home users, but the focus shifts to nonrecreational/tribal/rural second home users or low-income earners as second home tourists in South Africa. Some similarities and differences are highlighted between high-income and low-income earners' second home usage patterns, in terms of temporal and spatial dimensions, including seasonality, distances traveled, purpose of visit, place connection, and rural linkages. It is proposed that the research focus of second home tourism be broadened to "poor persons" (or low-income earners) nationally and internationally, as part of second home tourism to develop a richer and more inclusive focus of investigation. The achievement of upward mobility through participation in international labour markets has become possible for nurses in the context of a 'new' democratic South Africa, but this contrasts sharply with the predicament of many in the post-apartheid context, for whom economic vulnerability and unemployment are the prevailing norm. Such a stark contrast has tended to complicate the domestic relations experienced by nurses who, as working professionals, often have significantly greater financial resources and career flexibility than their husbands. Looking at the possibilities and constraints that are created for nurses in their social relationships particularly with their husbands, I draw on Belinda Bozzoli's concept of 'domestic struggles' in order to emphasise the multiplicity and changeability of gendered relations, instead of assuming a single patriarchal status quo.1 Fixed representations of gender roles nonetheless play an important part in nurses' own commentary on migration. While many nurses speak enthusiastically of the possibilities of seeking work overseas, others draw upon familiar representations of female domestic duty to condemn migrants for neglecting their family in pursuit of financial gain. I argue that this criticism is rooted in a fear of the threat that migration presents to existing nursing hierarchies, as a new and powerful tool for status acquisition in the post-apartheid context. This paper draws attention to the significance of mobility in shaping the educational and livelihood trajectories of rural young people in sub-Saharan Africa, with particular reference to a case study in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Young rural people commonly face both economic and political exclusions. As our case study illustrates, in the context of work demands, restricted basic education and poverty, the potential for escape, whether to secondary education or city jobs, is limited and in some respects highly gendered. This paper reflects on issues raised by work with children in an ongoing child mobility study in three sub-Saharan African countries: Ghana, Malawi and South Africa. There are now 70 school pupils of varying ages involved in the project, but the paper is particularly concerned with the participation of those children 14 years and under. We examine the significant ethical issues associated with working with younger child researchers, and linked questions concerning the spaces open to them in African contexts where local cultural constructions of childhood and associated economic imperatives (which commonly drive family and household endeavour) help shape the attitudes of adults to children’s rights and responsibilities and inter-generational power relations. Background: The main source of HIV prevalence estimates are household and population-based surveys; however, high refusal rates may hinder the interpretation of such estimates. The study objective was to evaluate whether population HIV prevalence estimates can be adjusted for survey non-response using mortality rates. Methodology/Principal Findings: Data come from the longitudinal Africa Centre Demographic Information System (ACDIS), in rural South Africa. Mortality rates for persons tested and not tested in the 2005 HIV surveillance were available from routine household surveillance. Assuming HIV status among individuals contacted but who refused to test (non-response) is missing at random and mortality among non-testers can be related to mortality of those tested a mathematical model was developed. Non-parametric bootstrapping was used to estimate the 95% confidence intervals around the estimates. Mortality rates were higher among untested (16.9 per thousand person-years) than tested population (11.6 per thousand person-years), suggesting higher HIV prevalence in the former. Adjusted HIV prevalence for females (15-49 years) was 31.6% (95% CI 26.1-37.1) compared to observed 25.2% (95% CI 24.0-26.4). For males (15-49 years) adjusted HIV prevalence was 19.8% (95% CI 14.8-24.8), compared to observed 13.2% (95% CI 12.1-14.3). For both sexes (15-49 years) combined, adjusted prevalence was 27.5% (95% CI 23.6-31.3), and observed prevalence was 19.7% (95% CI 19.6-21.3). Overall, observed prevalence underestimates the adjusted prevalence by around 7 percentage points (37% relative difference). Conclusions/Significance: We developed a simple approach to adjust HIV prevalence estimates for survey non-response. The approach has three features that make it easy to implement and effective in adjusting for selection bias than other approaches. Tests of social disorganization theory are commonplace in international criminological literature. Indeed a plethora of studies had emerged over the past seventy years examining and extending the theory throughout much of the developed world. The testing, however, of the landmark theory's key propositions in Africa in general, and South Africa in particular, is in its infancy. This study aimed to address this shortcoming by analyzing associations between various census measures of social disorganization and violent crime rates in the city of Tshwane, South Africa. Overall, marginal support was found for the social disorganization theory: violent crime in Tshwane was associated with certain measures of socioeconomic deprivation, and residential mobility. The study not only demonstrated the applicability of certain elements of Western criminological theory to contemporary urban South Africa, but also revealed important differences in the ecological dynamics of violent crime across differing cultural contexts. Using the visual diaries of a group of African women migrants now living in Johannesburg, this article explores what is now termed the 'feminization of migration.' It does this less by drawing attention to the fact that women are moving than by using women's own images and narratives to reveal dimensions of that experience that have yet to be understood. Central to the article's argument is an assertion that images communicate to us in ways that can reveal not only the material conditions of groups that are often hidden from view, but also their own political locations, and society's own assumptions about them. Women's visual diaries and their narratives reveal the ways in which they negotiate the structural impediments of asylum officialdom, police harassment, patriarchy, unemployment and poverty. The research argues that current understandings of the feminization of migration fail to reveal the socio-cultural and political complexities of women's mobility on the African continent. Women are not the silent emissaries that dominant iconography portrays them as being. Their discursive practices and images 'talk back' to society, sometimes subverting, while at other times reinforcing hegemonic modes of representations. Thus, while many have overcome significant structural hurdles in order to survive, they are not always heroines. Using visual methods the article reveals women's schemas - their ways of making sense of, and conceptualizing their worlds and experiences.
