With agriculture the primary driver of biodiversity loss, farmers are increasingly expected to produce environmental outcomes and protect biodiversity. However, lack of attention to the way farmers perceive native vegetation has resulted in conservation targets not being met. The Yorke Peninsula (YP), South Australia, is an agricultural landscape where < 5% of vegetation remains on private properties and roadsides. To identify YP farmers' barriers to vegetation conservation on the roadside and private properties, we interviewed 35 farmers representing 56,980 ha of farms (11% of the YP area) and three agronomists. We identified five barriers to conservation: (1) negative perceptions of roadside vegetation and (2) management bodies; (3) absence of effective conservation programs making use of farmers' motivations; (4) > 50% farmers perceived that long-term planning was for ≤ 30 years, not enough time to promote ecosystem conservation; (5) a lack of natural resource management information for farmers—as a result, farmers relied on their own experience to manage vegetation. Furthermore, most farmers depended on agronomists, who generally had no stake in biodiversity conservation. We recommend that (1) the Local Council restore social capital by liaising with farmers to promote roadside vegetation (2) long-term farmer-led conservation action be established and supported by Government and industry acting as facilitators rather than project managers; (3) a change in policy and training promote the involvement of agronomists in conservation and its management on private properties; (4) all levels of Government develop schemes to demonstrate the tangible benefits of native vegetation as habitat for wildlife; (5) on-farm conservation be celebrated as successful farming. Context. The iconic grass-trees (Xanthorrhoea semiplana) of Australia are used by many animal species, but their role as shelters against weather extremes is poorly known. The severe contribution ofthe fungal pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi to grass-tree deaths and current burning practices could affect small animal conservation by exacerbating impacts of weather extremes. Aims. We examined the buffering role of X. semiplana canopies against extreme weather at four sites in the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. Methods. We measured ambient temperature, temperatures under grasstree canopies, and 2 m away atrandom locationsin summer(>35°C) and in winter(<13°C) over 24-h periods at each study site. We scored soil dryness under the canopies during and after heavy rainfall. Key results. Temperatures under grass-tree canopies were more stable and with smallerrangesthan other temperatures, and showed dramatic differences in summer when conditions were up to 20°C cooler than ambient. Temperatures were higher under grass-trees at night in winter. The soil under the largest canopies was completely dry during and after heavy rainfall. Conclusions. Xanthorrhoea semiplana buffers ground-dwelling animals against temperature extremes and rain so that the animals maintain their thermal resistance. Animals may choose foraging times based on grass-tree availability. The largest grass-trees provide the bestshelter. Implications.Considerable grass-tree deathsfrom P. cinnamomi infestation, together with removal or burning, can have dramatic detrimental consequences for their habitat value and the survival of wildlife using them as shelter. Many animal species 'play dead' or feign death (in some cases called tonic immobility) as a defence strategy against predators, including some ants, although triggers and durations are poorly understood. We repeatedly observed such death-feigning behaviour in Polyrhachis femorata ants that occupied pygmy-possum nest boxes deployed on Kangaroo Island following the 2019–2020 bushfires that burnt half of the island. Most of the 759 bat and pygmy-possum boxes (901 cavities) were on burnt ground. In 3312 box cavity checks on 13 diverse properties during monitoring visits, 28 of 40 P. femorata records (first for South Australia) occurred in unburnt Critically Endangered Narrow-Leaf Mallee Woodland community, seven in adjacent mallee community containing narrow-leaf mallee, three in cup gum unburnt habitat, and two in one box on burnt ground. Fire may have affected the abundance and re-establishment of the species. Polyrhachis femorata engages in a surprising defensive immobility strategy in boxes, since it is not only undertaken by individuals facing a potential predator, but also by entire colonies. The death-feigning behaviours were complemented by plugging box entrances. Nest boxes may be used to study this mysterious behaviour in this poorly known species, although frequent observation could lead to nest abandonment by the ant. The ant Polyrhachis femorata , a first record for South Australia, feigned death individually and in colonies in wooden nest boxes made for pygmy-possums. The ant was most common in unburnt Critically Endangered Narrow-Leaf Mallee Woodland community on Kangaroo Island. We report the discovery of the invasive aphid Aphis lugentis for the first time in Australia. This aphid specialises on Compositae, particularly on Senecio species. Aphids were tended by several ant species at a site on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, which is unlikely to be the location of the original introduction. We recommend the investigation of the distribution of A. lugentis in Australia and its impacts on plant hosts including threatened species and associated native ant and aphid community structures. The implementation of rangeland biodiversity management strategies relies on the engagement and participation of key stakeholders, including local pastoralists (ranchers). Understanding pastoralists' knowledge of biodiversity, as well as their attitudes towards and perceptions of biodiversity management strategies, is fundamental for the development of efficacious rangeland management. This paper examines perceptions of biodiversity and land management strategies held by pastoralists in the Stony Plains region (SPR) of South Australia and reports on a survey, consisting of 45 questions, delivered to lessees and/or managers of pastoral leases within or on the edge of the SPR. Respondents generally agreed with prescribed land management strategies, but agreement did not mean that strategies were being implemented. The purchase of pastoral leases by government and/or conservation groups for biodiversity purposes was opposed strongly, which may present a barrier to collaborative land management. Pastoralists strongly agreed with several listed threats to biodiversity, but their feelings on climate-related threats were less strong. Attitudes to climate may have been influenced by above-average rainfall experienced during and preceding the survey period and by the climatic variability that characterises arid rangelands. Biodiversity conservation and the pastoral industry rely on collaborative rangeland management, non-bureaucratic communication, and an understanding among stakeholders of the attitudes and perceptions of other natural-resource users. The ornate kangaroo tick, Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum, is invasive on Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. To assess the potential for developing comprehensive management strategies for the species, we mailed 1,000 surveys to Yorke Peninsula residents to investigate community perceptions of ticks, gather information on tick-host ecology, and assess whether or not occupation and length of residence affected whether residents had seen ticks. The response rate was 32%; most respondents (63%) had not seen ticks on Yorke Peninsula. Of those who had (n = 104), 56% had seen ticks on animals, especially lizards (31%) and kangaroos (20%); 50% had seen ticks on humans. Of the 64 respondents who believed places on Yorke Peninsula had many ticks, 56% identified Innes National Park and 75% areas on southern Yorke Peninsula. The likelihood of seeing ticks was not related to occupation. Whether respondents had seen ticks was related to length of residence on Yorke Peninsula (<10 years = 23.6%, 10-30 years = 44.0%, 31-50 years = 47.6%, 51-70 years = 30.9%, 71+ years = 21.4%). The number of respondents who had seen ticks on humans suggests that tick-borne diseases could become a public health issue on Yorke Peninsula. This finding is of particular concern because A. t. triguttatum is implicated in the epidemiology of Q fever in Queensland. Abstract  The ornate kangaroo tick, Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum, was recently recorded on southern Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. We examined seasonal fluctuations in A. triguttatum triguttatum life stages (adult, larva, and nymph) and its distribution on the peninsula. We used in situ CO2 traps and dragging cloths to determine monthly fluctuations in free-living ticks at four sites at Innes National Park from January to December 2006, and to determine the tick’s distribution on wider Yorke Peninsula. At each site, 166 m2 of ground surface were directly sampled with cloths, representing 16 1-m2 CO2 stations and three 1-m-wide 50-m transects. Adult A. triguttatum triguttatum were present in January and February and from August to December, with a peak (n = 54) occurring in November. Larvae were present from February to August, with their highest density (n = 3067) detected in March. Nymphs were collected from January to April and from August to December, with the highest density (n = 61) detected in September. Overall, A. triguttatum triguttatum numbers were highest in March when larvae peaked, and few ticks were detected in January (summer) or July (winter). Caladenia behrii, a sexually deceptive orchid, is an endangered terrestrial orchid endemic to the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. We examined pollination success among individuals of different colours and heights in three populations of C. behrii in the northern Adelaide region. The labellum of C. behrii varies from cream to deep maroon. Over five years, the pollination success (pollinia deposited on stigma) of four colour groups (maroon, maroon and cream, hatched, and cream) was assessed for a total of 782 flowers. Labellum colour had no effect on the pollination success of individuals, indicating no frequency-dependent selection. It is likely that pollinators use the sexual pheromone mimic produced by the flowers as the main orientation cue. For three years the height of pollinated C. behrii individuals was recorded, along with the height of the nearest non-pollinated neighbour (distance of labellum from the ground, rather than stem length). Although a range of different heights was pollinated at population level, individual flowers that were taller than their closest neighbours were significantly more likely to be pollinated. Flower head height was not correlated with opening date and was greater for orchids growing among grass-tree leaves. Results imply that pollinators are more successful in finding tall flowers than short ones for visual and/or olfactory reasons; however, the effect of height preference is eliminated at population level.
