The article discusses a research study on the release and co-occurrence of fixed nitrogen (N) from Trichodesmium spp. in the low-latitude N-limited water of Kuroshio Current in the North West (NW) Pacific and the South China Sea (SCS). Researchers conducted field investigations on the abundance of Trichodesmium spp. and diatoms in natural waters and conducted laboratory N-tracer experiments on the transfer by Trichodesmium erythraeum of newly fixed N to diatoms and other non-diazotrophs. Results showed diatoms and phytoplankton taking up newly fixed N from the Trichodesmium erythraeum and the seasonal vertical distributions of diatoms and Trichodesmium spp. between the NW Pacific and SCS regions.

The article examines one research which investigates the effects of riverine mixing on phytoplankton dynamics in the upstream Kuroshio Current in South China Sea. It explores whether the consecutive passage of three typhoons in 2007 has a significant effect on the primary production, new production, chlorophyll, and phytoplankton assemblage in the place. It is also noted that the riverine mixing has resulted from wind-induced upwelling. After the typhoons, it was revealed that the number of diatoms in the area has increased while the abundances of Trichodesmium spp., Richelia intracellularis, and unicellular potential diazotrophs have significantly reduced.
