Past research on critical race media literacy (CRML) in multicultural education has primarily focused on identifying ways of fostering critical awareness of racism in the U.S. educational context. This study aims to present a situated account of a CRML pedagogy in the Korean high school classroom where students critique the racial and gender discrimination perpetuated in films. Using qualitative research data, such as teacher interviews and student presentation videos, the current study depicts ways in which Korean female high school students raise critical awareness of racism and sexism with the help of an English-speaking native teacher.

The landscape of technology in language classrooms is changing so quickly that it's hard for us to keep pace. Games-based student response systems (GBSRS) in a bring-your-own-device environment have only recently become widely available for language classrooms; consequently, little research has been conducted into the efficacy of GBSRSs for foreign language learning. This quasi-experimental study explores the efficacy of one application called Kahoot! at a medium-sized university in South Korea for vocabulary learning and motivation. Both the traditional control group and the experimental group learned more vocabulary during the course of the study; however, no significant difference in vocabulary learning was found between the groups. The change in motivation level, on the other hand, was significantly higher for the Kahoot! group. Therefore, the findings recommend the use of the Kahoot! GBSRS particularly for often low motivated Asian university EFL students.

This study provides a situated account of a native English-speaking teacher who implements critical literacy in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom at a Korean high school. Teacher interview data and student presentations are analyzed to depict how a third space created by the EFL teacher and his students allowed meaningful and relevant critical literacy activities for the female high school students. Mutual trust between the teacher and students as well as support from co-teachers and school administration emerge as central themes in the third space in which students conduct research on and present social topics, such as gender equality in Korea and beyond. Findings reveal that EFL learners are capable of enacting critical literacy despite the assumptions about the instructional challenges due to their linguistic and cultural backgrounds if they are given opportunities for critical conversations about controversial topics.
