Objectives: This study investigates the changing perceptions of Korean care workers regarding a robotic bed designed to assist with repositioning and prevent pressure ulcers. With the primary aim of assessing the technology acceptance among care workers using the robotic bed to solve the problem of a shortage of care workers in Korea, we sought to examine the possibility of applying care robots in the field. Methods: A total of 20 long-term care workers participated in the experiment, and their attitudes were measured before and after using the robot. Frequency analysis and paired t-tests were conducted using Stata 17 to analyze the data. Results: The results show significant changes in the perceived ease of use (PEOU), facilitating conditions (FCs), and gerontology anxiety (GA), with the PEOU increasing by 19.87%, FC increasing by 20.63%, and GA decreasing by 17.2%. However, there was no significant change in the perceived usefulness (PU) and intention to use (IU). Conclusions: The results showing that the perception of technology acceptance changed significantly mean that the use of the care robot means that there is a high possibility of positive perceptions in Korean care settings when care robots are distributed in the field in the future, considering that the experimental environment was limited due to the early stage of development of care robots. This study highlights the need for practical demonstrations and thorough training to improve technology acceptance among care workers before the application of care technology in the long-term care environment in South Korea. Purpose: This study aims to examine culture change in nursing homes in South Korea and to identify the outcomes of culture change implementation. Design and Methods: Data were taken from survey responses from 223 top- or mid-level staff among nursing homes in South Korea that were selected through a proportionate random-stratified sampling method from four regions nationwide. Culture change in nursing homes was operationalized by five person-directed care (PDC) constructs and three organizational environment constructs, and outcome quality was indicated by changes to occupancy rate and organizational commitment. Results: After controlling for facility characteristics, the effect of staff-reported culture change on occupancy rate and organizational commitment was analyzed through the multiple-regression method. Consistent with previous research, this study revealed positive effects of culture change for nursing homes in South Korea. The study found that staff-reported culture change correlated with occupancy rate and organizational commitment. Implications: Given that culture change variables were significantly related to occupancy rate and organizational commitment, the findings of the study provide a persuasive argument that policies and/or programs to support culture change in nursing homes should be enhanced. Management-level workers in these facilities should have the skills and knowledge to foster more PDC and a more person-directed environment.

Compared to the driving group, the driving cessation group in this study was found to be a high-risk population in terms of their life satisfaction. This study evaluated data from 315 older adults, aged 55 or older, using the 2018 Korean Older Adults Driving and Mobility Service Trend Survey. These data were collected from 17 representative cities and provinces in South Korea. To minimize the potential for selection bias and the confounding factors inherent in observational studies, this study employed the propensity score matching (PSM) method. Following the matching, multivariate regression analyses were conducted to compare the driving cessation group (n = 65) with the driving group (n = 50) in terms of their life satisfaction. After adjusting for demographic and health-related variables, the older adults who had ceased driving were found to have lower life satisfaction (Coef. = −1.39, p-value = 0.018). Our results highlight the importance of establishing preliminary evidence to guide the development of tailored programs for older adults—especially for those likely to experience diminished life satisfaction and heightened risk—to address the mobility challenges stemming from driving cessation. Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major contributor to liver diseases globally, yet there are limited studies investigating the impact of diet and lifestyle factors on its development. This study aimed to examine the association between the prevalence of NAFLD and predicted pro-inflammatory high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) score. Methods We included 1,076 Korean adults who underwent a medical examination at the Seoul National University Hospital Gangnam Healthcare Center in Korea between May and December 2011 and updated in 2021. The predicted pro-inflammatory hs-CRP score was derived from pro-inflammatory demographic, lifestyle, dietary, and anthropometric factors, and NAFLD was diagnosed using liver ultrasound. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of NAFLD odds according to predicted pro-inflammatory hs-CRP score were estimated using logistic regression at a two-sided P  <   0.05. Results Among the 1,076 participants, 320 had NAFLD. The multivariable-adjusted ORs and 95% CIs for NAFLD by tertiles of predicted pro-inflammatory hs-CRP score were 1.00, 3.30 (2.06, 5.30), 18.25 (10.47, 31.81; P  <   0.0001) in men and women combined, 1.00, 1.77 (1.10, 2.84), and 3.26 (2.02, 5.28; P  <   0.0001) among men only, and 1.00, 3.03 (1.39, 6.62), and 16.71 (7.05, 39.63; P  <   0.0001) among women only. Conclusions Predicted pro-inflammatory hs-CRP score was associated with higher odds of NAFLD. Aim: Despite the growing recognition of the importance of health literacy, there is a lack of knowledge on the longitudinal association between health literacy and frailty. The present study explored whether limited health literacy increases the risk of developing pre‐frailty and frailty among older adults. Methods: Data were drawn from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study, a nationwide, population‐based prospective cohort study of community‐dwelling older Koreans. A baseline sample of 2808 adults aged 70–84 years was analyzed for the cross‐sectional models, and 2278 participants in the 2‐year follow‐up assessment were included for the longitudinal analyses. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to evaluate the relative risk ratios of pre‐frailty or frailty, where a robust group served as the reference category. Results: The findings showed that baseline limited health literacy was associated with an approximately 1.4‐fold increased risk of developing pre‐frailty after 2 years, even after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors and health status. However, the longitudinal association between health literacy and frailty was not significant after adjusting for health‐related factors. Conclusions: Our findings point to the importance of promoting health literacy among older adults, and provide preliminary evidence that can inform the development of tailored public health strategies. • Multiple biomarkers are a valid strategy for diagnosing six common cancers in Korea. • The AUC of the models in the test set showed very high accuracy. • The sensitivity of the models for early stage cancer (stage I) was very high. The ultimate goal of cancer screening is to diagnose invasive cancers early, while they are still curable. We aimed to validate the diagnostic value of blood-derived protein biomarkers that we developed for six common cancer in Korea. We have discovered 12 protein biomarkers that are useful in differentiating cancer patients from healthy controls using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS), and literature review. Cancer patients (stomach, colon, liver, lung, breast, and prostate) and control subjects were collected and tested data sets were used to generate predictive models that identify risk scores for each cancer. The validation study was done in serum samples of an independent patient cohort Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the biomarker combinations. The AUCs of the model in the test set were 0.971, 0.960, 0.969, 0.942, 0.834, and 0.985 for stomach, colon, liver, lung, breast, and prostate cancer, respectively. Combining multiple tumor and systemic inflammatory biomarkers proved to be a valid strategy in the diagnosis of six common cancers in Korea. Background and Aim: In East Asia, colonic diverticulosis develops most commonly in the right colon and is known to have different characteristics compared with left‐sided one. This study was designed to investigate whether right‐colonic diverticulosis is associated with posteriori dietary patterns. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of prospectively collected cohort that received health check‐up in Korea between May 2011 and January 2012. Their anthropometric data, biochemical results, medication history, underlying diseases, colonoscopic findings, and dietary data obtained from semi‐quantitative food‐frequency questionnaire were analyzed. Three dietary patterns were identified using factor analysis: healthy dietary pattern (vegetables, fish, seaweed, fruits, and beans), meat dietary pattern (red meat, processed meat/fish, fried noodle, poultry, and cephalopods), and snack dietary pattern (bread, sweets, dairy products, nuts, and rice cake). Results: Out of the total 1911 patients, 203 (10.6%) had right‐colonic diverticulosis, 21 (1.1%) had pan‐colonic diverticulosis, and 12 (0.6%) had left‐colonic diverticulosis. Among the total, none of the three patterns were associated with right‐colonic diverticulosis, under adjustment with age, gender, body mass index, metabolic syndrome, and total energy intake. However, among women, meat dietary pattern was positively associated with right‐colonic diverticulosis (odds ratio 1.866, 95% confidence interval: 1.0983–3.173, P = 0.021). Reverse logistics include all operations related to the reuse of products and materials. In this study, we focus on collection, which is the first operation of reverse logistics, and on the strength of using the sensor data and the concept of Industry 4.0. Previously, the collection activities of electronic wastes (e-wastes) was conducted by a fixed schedule without consideration of the fulfillment level of the collection boxes. However, due to the progress of IoT(internet of things) technology and sensor technology, it is possible to consider the fulfillment level of the collection boxes in order to make the collection schedule. To utilize the sensor data and IoT technology in reverse logistics, a collection signal algorithm is required to treat the rate of fulfilment of collection boxes. However, the collection signal algorithm for the disposal of small and medium (S&M)-sized e-wastes have not yet been developed in South Korea. This study uses a collection box to develop the collection algorithm based on an experimental design method with multiple sensors. The proposed algorithm can be utilized to solve the current collection problems and to save logistics costs. Objectives: Depressive symptoms are greatly associated with cognitive impairment in older adults. Recent growing body of literature has reported that the subjective perception of one's own age (subjective age) predicts both cognitive performance and mental well-being in old age. This study aims to examine whether subjective age moderates the association between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning in a representative sample of Korean older adults. To address this research question, we employed the Stereotype-Embodiment Theory as a theoretical guide. Method: Data are from the 2016 Dementia Literacy Survey collected by Kyung Hee University, and 526 community-dwelling Korean older adults (ages 60-79) completed the questionnaire about depressive symptoms, cognitive functioning, and subjective age. Results: According to the hierarchical regression analysis, both higher levels of depressive symptoms and older subjective age were associated with poorer cognitive functioning. Further analyses showed that subjective age attenuated the effect of depressive symptoms on cognitive functioning: when older adults have a higher level of depression, those with younger subjective age reported a higher level of cognitive functioning than those with older subjective age. The purpose of this research is to examine the predictors of smartphone uses for health information–seeking (SHIS) in the Korean elderly. This research applies the comprehensive model of information seeking as a theoretical framework. Data reported in this study are from the 2016 Dementia Literacy Survey, and 235 elderly smartphone users were included in logistic regression model. SHIS was significantly predicted by younger age, higher education levels, having a regular exercise, higher medical expenditures, and health literacy. Background/Aims: Low socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to higher incidence/mortality of cardiovascular disease, but emerging evidence inconsistently reported that education level, a proxy for SES, is related to cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Koreans. Furthermore, limited information is available on whether dietary components would mediate the relationship between education level and cardiovascular risk. We hypothesized that selected food consumption mediates the association between education level and MetS prevalence. Methods: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2008-2011) were included in cross-sectional analyses (n = 11,029, 30-64 years). The possible mediating effect of selected food groups (fruits, raw vegetables, red meat, milk, and soft drinks) on the association between education level and MetS was tested using a multiple mediation model. Results: Education level was negatively associated with MetS prevalence. The association between lower education level and higher MetS prevalence was partially mediated by selected food consumption (lower intakes of fruit, red meat and milk; higher intakes of vegetable and soft drink) after adjusted for covariates. Gender also modified the association between education level and MetS prevalence that was more prominent in women than in men. Existing studies report a negative association between health literacy and hospital/emergency room use. Despite substantial research on this topic among older Americans, little is known about the link between health literacy and healthcare services use among older Koreans. This study investigates this link, using a sample of 596 adults, 65 and older, from Korea's three largest cities. Andersen's behavior model guided the study. Findings revealed that participants with higher health literacy were significantly less likely to use emergent health services. Objectives: Beijing strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) is characterized by a high incidence of transmission, relapse, and drug resistance. This study aimed to determine host immune responses to antigens derived from the Beijing/K strain which has been highly prevalent in tuberculosis (TB) outbreaks in South Korea.Methods: We recruited 52 TB patients and 96 healthy subjects comprising 31 individuals with latent TB infection (LTBI) and 65 TB-naïve controls based on QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT) tests. Blood samples were obtained for diluted whole-blood assays, multiplex bead arrays, ELISpot assays, and HLA typing. Molecular genotyping of M. tb was performed using clinical isolates.Results: Active TB and LTBI groups were differentiated by TNF-α concentrations induced by the Beijing/K strain-derived antigens, MTBK_24790 and MTBK_24800 (P < 0.001). MTBK_24800-induced IFN-γ and CXCL10 concentrations discriminated the TB-infected groups from TB-naïve controls (P < 0.001). IFN-γ-producing T cells were generated in 87.2% of TB patients in response to MTBK_24800 peptide antigens. The major immunogenic epitope was at C-terminal of the antigen, and predominantly recognized by HLA-DR4 and -DQ4.Conclusions: Measurement of IFN-γ, CXCL10, and TNF-α concentrations induced by MTBK_24790 and MTBK_24800 may contribute to improved diagnosis of TB and vaccine development in regions where the Beijing/K strain is endemic. Background/Aims. Women after menopause have increased insulin resistance and visceral fat, which may increase the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the pathogenesis of NAFLD in women has not been clearly defined. In this study, we aimed to determine the risk factors for NAFLD in women. Methods. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Women who underwent abdominal ultrasonography and blood sampling for routine health check-ups were recruited. Results. Among 1,423 subjects, 695 women (48.9%) were in a menopausal state. The prevalence of NAFLD was higher in postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women (27.2% versus 14.4%, P<0.001). In premenopausal women, low HDL-cholesterol, central obesity, and homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance showed a significant association with the increased risk of NAFLD in multivariate analysis. In postmenopausal women, the presence of diabetes, triglyceridemia, and central obesity showed a significant association with the risk of NAFLD. The presence of menopause and hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women were not risk factors for NAFLD. Conclusions. Our findings showed different metabolic factors for NAFLD in pre- and postmenopausal women. However, the key issues are the same: central obesity and insulin resistance. Background and Aim Clinical outcomes of Helicobacter pylori ( HP) infection have been shown to be dependent on the variability of virulence factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of each virulence factor and the association between polymorphisms of the virulence factors of HP, and the clinical outcome of gastroduodenal diseases in South Korea. Methods Four hundred one HP colonies were analyzed (75 colonies from 45 controls; 71 colonies from 39 benign gastric ulcer [ BGU] patients; 102 colonies from 54 duodenal ulcer [ DU] patients; 121 colonies from 77 stomach cancer patients; and 32 colonies from 25 dysplasia patients). Polymerase chain reaction amplifications for vacA, cagA, iceA, oipA, and dupA were performed using DNA extract from HP isolates cultured from mucosal biopsy specimens. dupA was regarded as positive when all of jph0718, jph0719, and dup A were positive. Results Most colonies were composed of vacA s1 (100.0%), i1 (100.0%) and m1 (92.9%), cagA-positive (87.2%), iceA1 (95.8%), oipA-positive (91.2%), and dupA-negative (52.0%) genotypes. dupA was more frequently expressed in BGU (81.3%), DU (74.7%), and dysplasia (41.7%) than control (16.7%) ( P < 0.001). Infection by dupA-positive HP showed an increased risk of BGU (odds ratio 33.06, 95% confidence interval 11.91-91.79) and DU (odds ratio 15.60, 95% confidence interval 6.49-37.49). Conclusion HP infection in South Koreans appears to be closely related to highly virulent strains ( vacA s1/i1/m1, cagA(+), iceA1(+), and oipA(+)), except dupA. dupA has an intimate association with the development of peptic ulcer diseases. To understand the dynamics of radial growth of trees and micro-climate at a site of Korean fir (Abies koreana Wilson) forest on high-altitude area of Mt. Hallasan National Park, Jeju Island, Korea, high precision dendrometers were installed on the stems of Korean fir trees, and the sensors for measuring micro-climate of the forest at 10 minutes interval were also installed at the forest. Data from the sensors were sent to nodes, collected to a gateway wireless, and transmitted to a data server using mobile phone communication system. By analyzing the radial growth data for the trees during the growing season in 2016, we can estimate that the radial growth of Korean fir trees initiated in late April to early May and ceased in late August to early September, which indicates that period for the radial growth was about 4 months in 2016. It is interesting to observe that the daily ambient temperature and the daily soil temperature at the depth of 20 cm coincided with the values of about 10 °C when the radial growth of the trees initiated in 2016. When the radial growth ceased, the values of the ambient temperature went down below about 15 °C and 16 °C, respectively. While the ambient temperature and the soil temperature are evaluated to be the good indicators for the initiation and the cessation of radial growth, it becomes clear that radii of tree stems showed diurnal growth patterns affected by diurnal change of ambient temperature. In addition, the wetting and drying of the surface of the tree stems affected by precipitation became the additional factors that affect the expansion and shrinkage of the tree stems at the forest site. While it is interesting to note that the interrelationships among the micro-climatic factors at the forest site were well explained through this study, it should be recognized that the precision monitoring made possible with the application of high resolution sensors in the measurement of the radial increment combined with the observation of 10 minutes interval with aids of information and communication technology in the ecosystem observation.
