Background: Endocrinopathy is a risk factor for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We aimed to determine (1) the incidence of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE compared with that of non-endocrinopathy-associated SCFE, (2) whether the incidence of SCFE increases with the number of deficient hormones, and (3) the clinical characteristics of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE. Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study using a nationwide database in South Korea. All new diagnoses of endocrinopathy or SCFE between 2002 and 2019 in children born between 2002 and 2005 were identified. The incidence of SCFE was calculated for each type of endocrinopathy. The trend of the incidence of SCFE relative to the number of deficient hormones was analyzed. The male:female ratio was compared between endocrinopathy-associated SCFE and non-endocrinopathy-associated SCFE. For endocrinopathy-associated SCFE, the time between the diagnoses of SCFE and endocrinopathy was evaluated. Results: The incidence of SCFE was higher in children with endocrinopathy than in those without endocrinopathy (37.1/100,000 versus 9.0/100,000 children) (relative risk, 4.1 [95% confidence interval, 2.8-6.1]). Among various endocrinopathies, growth hormone deficiency showed the highest incidence of SCFE (583.8/100,000 children). The Cochran-Armitage test showed a linear trend, with an increased number of deficient hormones being associated with a higher incidence of SCFE (p < 0.001). Male sex was dominant in the non-endocrinopathy-associated SCFE group (73%; 117 of 161), whereas female sex was dominant in the endocrinopathy-associated SCFE group (53%; 16 of 30) (p = 0.009). Twenty-two of the 30 cases of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE were diagnosed after the diagnosis of endocrinopathy, with a median time of 3.6 years between the diagnoses. Six (27%) of these 22 children developed SCFE >5 years after the diagnosis of endocrinopathy. Conclusions: The incidence of SCFE was approximately 4 times higher in children with endocrinopathy than in those without endocrinopathy. The risk of SCFE increased with an increased number of deficient hormones. Long-term monitoring of SCFE occurrence in children with endocrinopathies is strongly recommended. Autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA), tyrosine phosphatase-related islet antigen 2 (IA2A), insulin (INSA), and islet cells (ICA) are critical for determining the type of diabetes and management strategy in new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM), but there have been few reports of all diabetes-associated autoantibody (DAA) in Korea. We retrospectively analyzed 193 patients with NODM aged 0 to 18 years who were followed at two tertiary centers in Korea (2017 to 2021). Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were 93 (48.2%) and 100 (51.8%), respectively. In T1DM patients, the DAA positivity rate was 94.6%; prevalence of GADA, IA2A, INSA, and ICA was 71.0%, 71.0%, 31.2%, and 10.8%, respectively; and IA2A added 10.7% point autoantibody positivity (83.9% for GADA+INSA+ICA and 94.6% for GADA+INSA+ ICA+IA2A). Among the patients with T2DM, 12 (12.0%) were positive for DAA, and all were positive for INSA. These findings suggest that DAA at diagnosis, especially GADA and IA2A, is useful for classifying diabetes in Korean children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Despite the prevalent use of insulin pump therapy worldwide, few studies have been conducted among young patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Korea. We investigated the durability and effectiveness of insulin pump therapy among Korean pediatric and young adult patients with T1D. Methods: This study included 54 patients with T1D diagnosed at pediatric ages (range, 1.1--14.1 years) who initiated insulin pump therapy during 2016--2019 at Seoul National University Children's Hospital and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Clinical and biochemical data, including anthropometric measurements, insulin dose, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were obtained from T1D diagnosis to last follow-up. Results: Forty-four patients (81.5%) continued insulin pump therapy with a median pump use duration of 2.9 years (range, 0.2--3.5 years); 10 discontinued the therapy within 12 months (<1 month, n=6; 1--6 months, n=1; and 6--12 months, n=3) due to physical interferences or financial problems. Older age (≥10 years of age) and longer diabetes duration (≥2 years) at the initiation of pump therapy were associated with discontinuation (P<0.05 for both). For patients continuing pump therapy, HbA1c levels significantly decreased after 1 year of therapy (from 8.9% to 8.1%, P<0.001) without changes in the body mass index z-scores or insulin dose. Although 4 patients experienced diabetic ketoacidosis, all recovered without complications. Conclusion: Insulin pump therapy was effective in improving glycemic control in T1D patients during 12 months of treatment. Early initiation of insulin pump therapy after T1D diagnosis was helpful for continuing therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study was designed to identify the characteristics and career plans of Korean international students and graduates of the PharmD program in the United States. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to the online community of Korean international students and graduates of the US PharmD program. Results: Korean students and graduates were highly satisfied with the quality of the PharmD program in the United States but their level of anxiety regarding employment was high. Majority of the current students and graduates desired to stay in the United States after graduation due to better compensation, opportunity for professional development, and preferences of lifestyle in the United States. Conclusion: Academic and career advising of international students during pharmacy school and establishing a network of US PharmD graduates in Korea could serve as valuable resources for Korean international students and graduates.
