An essay is presented on slavery in the Bay of Bengal, and the specific trends visible in the seventeenth century civilization in the Bay of Bengal including increasing international sea-borne trade, increased warfare in South Asia, and the improving labor market. The author presents a comparative analysis of slavery in the Bengal delta with other forms of slavery practiced in other places, including north-east India and northern Burma, in attempt to understand slavery's societal role.
