This paper aims to present the testimony of the midwife and practitioner José Quílez, who developed his professional practice in Almenar (small town in the province of Lleida), in order to show how the professional provision of care in rural postwar Catalonia was developed by this civil servant of the local administration. A qualitative study of historical research is developed using the biographical interview as a resource, framed in the phenomenological paradigm, using direct oral sources that have been triangulated with the interviewee's own written sources, bibliographic sources, as well as documentation from the archives of the Official College of Nurses of Lleida. The testimony highlights a noble character forged by the miseries of postwar Spain, which led to his emigration for work reasons from Aragon to Catalonia, where he had the opportunity to develop a solid family project, as well as a strong professional commitment in the provision of care, which is manifested in the rigor in the application of the protocols of the time, as well as the basic principles of ethics and privacy with which he attended to patients. COVID-19 pandemic , *SOCIAL & economic rights , *CATEGORIZATION (Psychology) , *INCOME maintenance programs , *HOUSEHOLD employees - Abstract
The article analyses the domestic and care workers' sector in Spain. It shows the difficulties of access to social rights and the impact of the covid crisis on their income and access to housing. It analyses the effectiveness of the guarantees of their social rights, both general and more specific: special allowance and a minimum living income. In both areas, problems of effectiveness are identified. This contrasts with the efficacy provided by the self-protection strategies deployed by the domestic workers' organisations themselves. All this allows us to reflect on the changes that the law must introduce in the categorisation of social groups and in its orientation towards a certain type of subject to recover declining effectiveness. SOCIAL integration , *SOCIAL movements , *CAPITALISM , *MUTUAL aid , *SOLIDARITY , *GROUP identity , *INDIVIDUALISM , *SOCIAL reproduction - Abstract
This article analyzes solidarity initiatives directed at vulnerable groups in Spain in the context of the post-2008 crisis. The analysis is based on Polanyi's perspective on the counter-movements that develop in society to counteract the mercantilist forces inherent in capitalism (Polanyi, 2001; Fraser, 2012). The work is based on a series of case studies of solidarity initiatives developed in the field of social reproduction and aimed at meeting basic needs. These case studies have shown how in these initiatives similar patterns are repeated both in the objectives of the groups and in their practices. First, they pursue social inclusion through social justice; and, secondly, they construct an alternative collective identity, a "we" that seeks to resist the individualism of the market through solidarity and mutual aid. We argue that the constitution of this collective identity takes place through the formation of circles of recognition (Pizzorno, 1986) in activism that recover a popular epic based on solidarity and mutual care, in the construction of an "interdependent we" and that have the local sphere as a sphere of action. COVID-19 pandemic , *HOUSEHOLD employees , *DISCOURSE analysis , *CITIES & towns , *WOMEN employees - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze how the covid-19 pandemic affected the perceptions and uses of time of domestic workers in Spain, focusing, in particular, on the cities of Granada and Zaragoza. Our work derives from the project "El cuidado importa. Impacto de género en las cuidadoras/es de mayores y dependientes en tiempos de la Covid-19" (CUMADE) coordinated by Universidad Rovira I Virgili de Tarragona-Cataluña (Spain), and run by interdisciplinary research teams from ten Spanish universities between the months of September 2020 and January 2021. The research is qualitative, based on in-depth interviews, and designed to investigate the impact of covid-19 on the care of the elderly and dependents and, more specifically, on the domestic workers' sector. Temporality, so severely affected by the uncertainty and unpredictability of the new situation, provides an interesting axis for qualitative analysis of the discourses of women workers on the way in which the pandemic has conditioned their daily lives. To undertake this analysis, we base ourselves on the work of Ramón Ramos on las imágenes sociales del tiempo (the social images of time). This approach represents an original and novel analysis of the reality of domestic workers, while at the same time dialoguing with other recent work on this issue. The images of time as a resource, scenario, or horizon serve to analyze the discourse of our interviewees and show how time, understood as a social category, has structured and organized their lives. We consider what they have been able to do and what they have not been able to do, the distribution and intensification of tasks, their plans for the future, and the physical and emotional impact of the pandemic. - Abstract
Objective: To explore the perceptions of elderly people from diverse cultures regarding the factors relevant to aging, identifying similarities and differences, and describing elements that facilitate or hinder this process, with a focus on the impact of care services., Method: Qualitative study with 48 participants over 50 years old, residing in the Alt Empordà region, Catalonia. Seven focus groups were conducted, including one exploratory multicultural group and six stratified by origin: native, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, North Africa, and West Africa., Results: All groups valued health and the desire to remain in their homes or communities for as long as possible. African groups emphasized the importance of free health services, while the Latin American group valued personalized end-of-life care. The native group pointed out deficiencies in home care and residential care services. Western European participants mentioned language barriers and challenges with digitalization as the only means of accessing information, and Eastern European participants highlighted the need for empowerment and social participation. Additionally, the importance of new family models, restrictions on non-Catholic funeral practices, and the need for community integration were mentioned., Conclusion: While there are differences in perceptions of aging among the different groups, common factors were identified that either facilitate or hinder this process, regardless of whether there is a migration background., (Copyright © 2024 SEGG. Objective: This work analyzes the transformations of formal and informal care in rural territories in Spain and Chile. Method: We describe the results of two qualitative studies that carried out interviews in two rural areas. The interviews addressed the characteristics of the formal and informal care received by older adults. The data is discussed in the light of research on care crises, the support generation and older caregiver women, from the perspective of rural territories. Results: on one hand, identify the presence of male caregivers, the extended family, and neighborhood-community networks in the provision of informal care. We discuss the need to consider the socio-cultural particularities of rural territories in the design of formal care services. We recommend the strengthening of ties of such services with family groups and local communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OLDER people , *CARE of older women , *CAREGIVERS , *QUALITY of life , *HEALTH of older people , *WAGES - Abstract
In Spain, the programs coverage level aimed at older people caregivers, mainly women, does not reach the appropriate level, evidence that manifests itself in multiple ways. For example, the compatibility of care and paid work, essential for many caregivers, would be possible if appropriate support measures were taken. In this context, the objective of this work is to investigate differents aspects of the programs-ownership, type and contents, beneficiaries of the program, design and impact-aimed at older people caregivers in order to establish potential improvements or new versions. The methodology followed in the evaluation of these programs is based on a qualitative analysis (through 13 in-depth interviews with experts, and 7 discussion groups for caregivers, N = 65) and quantitative (through a questionnaire to responsible for programs, N = 338), at the national level. The responses of those responsible for the programs and the speeches of the caregivers coincide in pointing out the positive consequences of these supports on the quality of life of caregivers and the older people. However, serious shortcomings persist that prevent optimum compliance with the objectives for which they were designed. The article focuses on the analysis of programs with emphasis on the gender perspective to apply both to the field of care for the elderly and to the quality of life of carers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the fifteenth and sixteenth century, at a time of repression and religious and inquisitorial persecution, women have acted as informal caregivers with empirical practices. The objectives of this article is to emphasize the process of professionalization of women's care over that period and to know the role of the church and men in critical care to women, as well as presenting Spanish female figures who have excelled in medicine during this period. Methods: The task is a narrative review of secondary sources related with the object of study, as well as an analysis of the same sources from the social history, keeping in mind the characteristics of the era of study. Results: During the centuries XV and XVI, the church, along with the medical class, led to a suppression of feminine care that influenced their acceptance. Thus, feminine care generated disagreement and conflict between the church and society and the informal women's care began to be part of the professionalized medical profession. Conclusions: The findings from this study highlight the acceptance of female empirical practices, in contrast to the theoretical knowledge of medical and subsequently the inclusion of women in professional care. Virtual communities for women coming to assisted donation in Spain have gained an important presence. There is a wide range of families that are shaped by assisted techniques, including single-parent by choice, homoparental with lesbian couples and biparental heterosexual. Women find in these communities a care network that supplies a lack of assistance from their immediate environments, not only medical help but also psychological support, channels of emotional expression and even material and educational resources necessary for setting up their family projects, which are not offered by assisted reproduction clinics and neither by a limited welfare support. Virtual communities can be considered as horizontal care frames among women. They are given by other women as peers, who share the experience of getting to motherhood in similar circumstances. This paper seeks to debate the dynamics existing between users of and trainers in a home care course for illegal immigrants in Barcelona. The analysis of these dynamics reveals the ambivalence of the help and support devices used by immigrants. These devices expose distant and top-down social positions (Spanish citizen /immigrant-foreigner), as well as alliances between users and trainers based on their shared identification as "employees" vis-à-vis the "lady of the house". Our analysis also reveals the importance of care work for the reproduction of life and also the lack of social recognition, low pay and poor legal coverage this type of job gets in the labour market. Introduction and Objectives: In 2012, the Adolescents with Cancer Working Group published the results of a survey on care delivery for the adolescent population in Spain as a starting point for future intervention. The aim of this nationwide survey was to outline the current situation and assess whether the implemented strategies have resulted in changes in care delivery., Material and Methods: Survey consisting of the same items analysed and published in 2012. The questionnaire was structured into sections devoted to epidemiology, psychosocial care, infrastructure, treatment and follow-up of adolescents with cancer. It was submitted to all hospitals in Spain with a paediatric haematology and oncology unit. We conducted a descriptive analysis of the results., Results: The percentage of patients aged up to 18 years managed in paediatric units has increased from 35.9% to 77.5% in the past decade. The proportion of malignant blood tumours treated in paediatric units increased from 31% to 52%, and the proportion of solid tumours from 49% to 85%. In 2012, 30 units (out of 39) reported that new cases in adolescents amounted to up to 10% of the total. At present, only 14 (out of 40) continue to report this percentage. A decade ago, there were no specific adolescent cancer units in Spain. Now, 7 centres (out of 40) have specific multidisciplinary units. There has been little change in psychological support services for adolescents. The follow-up of survivors is carried out by paediatric specialists in 82.5% of the hospitals., Conclusions: The efforts made to centralise the care of adolescents with cancer in specific multidisciplinary adolescent units or, failing that, paediatric units, is reflected in the changes in care delivery in Spain in the past decade. Much remains to be done in key components of the management of adolescents with cancer., (Copyright © 2022 Asociación Española de Pediatría. Published by Elsevier España, S.L.U. All rights reserved.)

WORKING class families , *FAMILIES , *SOCIAL structure , *TEXTILE workers , *TEXTILE industry , *CLOTHING industry , *CLOTHING industry personnel - Abstract
The main goal of this article is to assess the influence of the individualisation process on working-class family relationships. This is a relevant analysis, bearing in mind the importance of the family in welfare provision in Spain and the transformative capacity that the individualisation process has had for the conception and management of family bonds; however, the main theoretical work which has dealt with this process to date has failed to address the working class. The in-depth interviews conducted with workers from the textile and clothing industry of the Valencian regions of l'Alcoià, Comtat and Vall d'Albaida led to the conclusion that their concept of family and care responsibilities has been influenced by individualisation, prioritizing individual satisfaction over social rules and conventions. However, their practices still continue to reflect very traditional patterns, largely due to their fragile position in the social structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNICATION & psychology , *ORAL communication , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *CAVE paintings - Abstract
Henderson's need to communicate with other people to express emotions, needs, fears or opinions, constitutes the essential basis of help relationship (Rogers, 1986); this help relationship although it might be adapted in a paramount way to nursing care, could not always be totally transferred to those nursing cares. In order to identify help relationship along history, many sources have been used, being iconography one of them. The iconographic material to be used to verify or invalidate hypothesis is as much of a civil character as of a religious one, obtained by data collected from the National Prado Museum, Madrid Archeological National Museum, and the Cave Paintings around the Mediterranean area, in the Spanish Peninsula. Variables have been distributed in categories according to the characteristics of the so called help relationship. For the purpose of this test, the iconographic interpretation proposed by Panofsky (1995) as well as Siles's diagrams (1999) have been used. The most ancient iconographies where help relationships appear are from XI century and the most recent ones are from XIX century. 6 are from a religious origin and 6 from civil origin. As a final outcome there could be said, that in relationship verbal or no-verbal communication exists, and that the care taker is always informal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The establishment of nursing specialties that started in 1953 has contributed decisively to the quality of the medical care provided by the National Health System. Nowadays, a large number of nurses have an official specialist qualification achieved through different means of access established by Royal Decree on nursing specialties. Furthermore, the training programmes must continue to develop in order to complete the catalogue established under the aforementioned regulation. It should be pointed out that many specialists face difficulties in carrying out professional practice according to their education and training, due to the lack of job descriptions and identification of competences during recruitment processes and access to job positions, needed for appropriate professional performance. Therefore, it is essential to create a catalogue for specific job positions for each of the specialties to meet the expectations of professional nursing and enhance progress in quality patient care., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier España, S.L.U. - Abstract
Introduction: School-aged children with type 1 diabetes (DM1) require access to appropriate and safe care for their disease during their stay in the educational centre., Objective: To identify the needs perceived by families of schoolchildren with DM1 that affect their educational integration, safety, and well-being during the school day., Methodology: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire based on information and opinions provided by families of 362 schoolchildren between 3 and 16 years old with DM1 registered in their health history in the Public Health System of Extremadura., Results: The response rate was 56.9% (206). It was shown that 35% of schoolchildren with DM1 were treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy. Almost all of them (95.1%) required glucose monitoring, and 57.8% required insulin administration during the school day. Most (88%) children had adjusted well to school and did not describe any type of discriminatory treatment (87.4%). Glucagon is available in 82% of educational centres, in which 43.7% had a trained adult person to administer it. That teachers could recognise a hypoglycaemia was expressed by 21.4% of the families, and 29.1% were unaware of the existence of coordination protocols in the school. More than half (58.7%) claimed that the information available in schools about diabetes was low, and 77.2% stated that the control of the disease would improve if more training was provided to teachers., Conclusions: There are aspects optimally covered in the care of schoolchildren with DM1 in the schools of Extremadura. Among situations identified with potential room for improvement were adherence to the coordination protocol, information about diabetes, and training of adults to deal with emergency situations., (Copyright © 2018 Asociación Española de Pediatría.
