Phenological studies have a crucial role in the global change context. The Mediterranean basin constitutes a key study site since strong climate change impacts are expected, particularly in mountain areas such as Sierra Nevada, where we focus. Specifically, we delve into phenological changes in endemic vascular plants over time by analysing data at three scales: entire massif, altitudinal ranges, and particular species, seeking to contribute to stopping biodiversity loss. For this, we analysed 5262 samples of 2129 herbarium sheets from Sierra Nevada, dated from 1837 to 2019, including reproductive structure, complete collection date, and precise location. We found a generalized advancement in phenology at all scales, and particularly in flowering onset and flowering peak. Thus, plants flower on average 11 days earlier now than before the 1970s. Although similar trends have been confirmed for many territories and species, we address plants that have been studied little in the past regarding biotypes and distribution, and which are relevant for conservation. Thus, we analysed phenological changes in endemic plants, mostly threatened, from a crucial hotspot within the Mediterranean hotspot, which is particularly vulnerable to global warming. Mosquitoes are capable of transmitting pathogens of both medical and veterinary significance. Addressing the nuisance and vector roles of Aedes albopictus through surveillance and control programs is a primary concern for European countries. Botanical gardens provide suitable habitats for the development of Ae. albopictus and represent typical points of entry of invasive species. To assess the oviposition preferences alongside various biotic parameters (plant species community, shade index, and flowering), we conducted a study in a botanical garden of Sóller (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). A total of 6,368 Ae. albopictus eggs were recorded in 36 ovitraps positioned and revised every 15 days in seven different habitats over six months in 2016. Zero-inflated and generalized linear mixed-effects models were used to analyse Ae. albopictus habitat preferences. The number of eggs increased throughout the sampling period, peaking in September. The oviposition rates showed a patchy distribution, with Ae. albopictus showing preference for oviposition in laurel forest and cropland habitats. A positive effect of large leaves and presence of flowers on the oviposition of Ae. albopictus were also recorded. The reproductive response of fifteen year old sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium L.) combination ‘Prime Giant’/SL64 under Mediterranean climate to deficit irrigation was studied in a commercial orchard in south-eastern Spain for four seasons. Three irrigation treatments were assayed: (i) control treatment, irrigated without restrictions at 110% of seasonal crop evapotranspiration; (ii) sustained deficit irrigation treatment, irrigated at 85% ETc during pre-harvest and post-harvest periods, and at 100% ETc during floral differentiation, and (iii) regulated deficit irrigation treatment, irrigated at 100% ETc during pre-harvest and floral differentiation and at 55% ETc during post-harvest. The duration and intensity of the phenological phases of sweet cherry trees, including cold accumulation, flowering, fruit set or fruit and vegetative growth, were assessed to ascertain whether the different irrigation strategies imposed affect the trees’ reproductive response (fruit yield, fruit size, leaf area, fruit physiological disturbances, and starch and soluble carbohydrates stock) in the same season or have a negative effect in the next season. Deficit irrigation did not advance, enhance or penalize flowering, fruit set or fruit growth. Neither did it diminish carbohydrate concentration in roots or cause an increase in the number of double fruits, which was more linked to high temperatures after harvest. However, deficit irrigation decreased vegetative growth and consequently the leaf area/fruit ratio, which, when it fell below 180 cm² fruit−1, affected cherry size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globularia alypum is a perennial shrub typical of western Mediterranean thermophilous shrublands. Nine populations of G. alypum located in different localities of Catalonia (NE Spain) were surveyed for flowering phenology. Flower-head buds were present in all the populations in July. Flowering time in the area spans from the late summer-early autumn to the next spring depending on the populations; there are two groups of populations, early and late flowering. Early populations grow mostly in coastal localities and flower from September to November, whereas late flowering populations grow in inland localities and flower from February to April. The flowering order of the populations correlated with minimum temperature of most months except the warmest ones, and correlated with maximum and mean temperatures of the coldest months. Correlations were similar when tested with annual climate. The flowering order also correlated with the thermic interval for most months except the coldest and with the index of continentality. Early populations alone did not present correlations with any variable, whereas late populations alone correlated similarly to all populations together. Flowering order did not correlate with precipitation. Late populations are proposed to be regulated by temperature according to our results whereas early populations could be regulated by timing in precipitation after summer drought, according to published results. We discuss the possibilities of the two flowering patterns, early and late, being due to phenotypic plasticity or to genetic adaptation to local climates. We also discuss the consequences at the plant and ecosystem level of climate warming causing shifts from late to early patterns, a possibility that is likely in the warmest of the late populations if flowering is modulated phenotypically. Flowering events of Posidonia oceanica (over two consecutive years) are reported for the first time in meadows located close to its westernmost distribution limit (Málaga, southern Spain). Shoots with inflorescences were found in fragmented meadows (patches between 1-130 m2) at a mean depth of 2.5 m. In March 2009, flowering was only observed in Calaburras (0-28 inflorescences m-2) and not in Calahonda. In November 2009, massive flowering events were observed in both Calaburras (4-144 inflorescences m-2) and Calahonda (8-184 inflorescences m-2). On this occasion, developing fruits were also observed. From 2003 to 2009, mean annual water temperatures increased in this area, with maximum values in late summer and autumn of 2007 and 2008, and these warm waters may have induced the massive flowering events. Flowering in these P. oceanica meadows located close to the Atlantic Ocean may imply favourable environmental conditions and a good health status, which should be considered in improving conservational strategies for these meadows. Abstract: For temperate-zone fruit species such as apricot, when winter cold requirements are not adequately satisfied, negative repercussions on productivity occur. The aim of this research was to study the effect of, mainly temperature on the overcoming of dormancy in different apricot cultivars growing in two areas (Italy, Tuscany: lat. 43°02′N, long. 10°36′E; Spain, Murcia: lat. 38°16′N, long. 1°16′W) representative of the Mediterranean climate. Trials were conducted for two consecutive years on the same genotypes: ‘Currot’, ‘San Castrese’, ‘Goldrich’, ‘Stark Early Orange’ and ‘Orange Red’. These genotypes cover the range of chilling requirements (CR) in the apricot species in these Mediterranean areas. The CR (measured by chill units, CU and portions) for breaking of dormancy, heat requirements, flowering date and flowering and fruit-set percentages were measured. Temperatures were recorded and transformed into the corresponding CU and portions by the Utah Model and the Dynamic model, respectively. The winter climatic conditions determined a dissimilar chill unit accumulation in Tuscany (Italy) and Murcia (Spain) as well as an important effect of the year in both areas. While all cultivars with the exception of Stark Early Orange overcame dormancy, significant differences regarding the CR of cultivars for two different years and growing in two environments were observed, depending also on the cultivar. The results showed that both the Utah Model and Dynamic Model were not completely accurate with regard to establishing the CR for dormancy release under a Mediterranean climate. The aim of this study was to investigate the main climatic and biological trends related to olive flowering in central-southern Italy compared to those in Andalusia, Spain. Results since 1982 were compared for the two long-series monitoring areas of Cordoba and Perugia, and since 1992-1999 for the short-series areas. The relationship between climatic trends and the biological response of the olive, a widespread culture in the Mediterranean basin, were investigated. An aerobiological method involving capturing pollen released into the atmosphere was utilised as a bioindicator of flowering phenology. The study results confirm the strong relationship between flowering periods and spring temperature trends for the olive. Temperature during March, April and May was the parameter most related to flowering date in the study areas, particularly in Italy. In some cases we found a significant correlation between flowering and past autumn temperatures, probably due to their effect on floral bud dormancy induction, but this phenomenon appeared to be of minor importance in the studied areas. The phenological trend results show the continuous advance of flowering dates to the late 1990s, followed by a relatively stationary time series related to a short-term temperature fluctuation in the Mediterranean area. This latter period probably represents a mesoscale event forced by a macroscale event--the North Atlantic Oscillation. The results reveal that the trend towards increased temperatures, and the consequent flowering advance of some species, indicated some years ago is nowadays not as clear as was expected and should be confirmed over the next few years in the Mediterranean areas under investigation. Abstract: Sweet cherry cultivars have different chilling and heat requirements for breaking rest and flowering. The knowledge of these requirements may be valuable in the selection of the appropriate cultivars for producers and to avoid losses caused by an inadequate cultivar selection in a particular area. Determination of chilling and heat requirements is also important within a breeding programme, when choosing parents to obtain early flowering cultivars. Chilling requirements of seven cherry cultivars growing in south-eastern Spain were calculated using different methods (hours below 7°C, Utah and Dynamic model), which were compared. Recording hourly average temperatures at several locations during 2 years, the Utah and Dynamic models performed better than hours below 7°C. Different chilling requirements and slight differences in heat requirements were observed in the studied cultivars. ‘Cristobalina’ and ‘Brooks’, the earlier-flowering cultivars, were those with the lowest chilling requirements. ‘Burlat’, ‘New Star’ and ‘Somerset’ had medium chilling and heat requirements for flowering, and ‘Marvin’ showed the highest values and also the latest blooming date. All the studied cultivars may have their chilling requirements satisfied in the region of Murcia, if grown at least 650m above sea level. Some cultivars, such as ‘Cristobalina’ and ‘Brooks’, could successfully break dormancy already when grown at an altitude above 325m. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In Navarra, Northern Spain, Verticillium dahliae Kleb. is one of the pathogens that causes drastic reductions in pepper production. The aim of this study therefore was to describe how infection by V. dahliae affects gas exchange during the flowering of pepper in order to determine some possible factors contributing to the significant decrease of plant yield. Verticillium was inoculated when plants had started flowering. The first leaf wilting symptoms appeared on day 18 after inoculation, but leaf water potential rapidly decreased after infection. The inoculated plants produced more flowers than the controls between 15 and 33 days after inoculation, but flower production declined after day 33. Inoculated plants also suffered more defoliation and chlorophyll degradation. Leaf conductance and photosynthesis clearly decreased in both groups of plants as a consequence of senescence, but the values in those inoculated were significantly lower. Results suggest that the decrease in photosynthesis was in part due to defoliation and chlorophyll degradation, as well as premature flower fall. Reliable estimates of the chill requirements (CR) of fruit trees are essential for assessing the current suitability of cultivars and potential climate change impacts on fruit production. We determined chill and heat requirements of ten apple cultivars in northwestern Spain using a bud-forcing method. CR ranged from 59 ('Granny Smith') to 90 ('Regona') Chill Portions (CP) according to the Dynamic Model. These results indicate that international dessert apple cultivars such as 'Elstar' and 'Granny Smith' have clearly lower CR than the studied local cultivars. The agro-climatic needs of the traditional apple cultivars are aligned with the historical climate conditions in the region. To assess future apple cultivation in northwestern Spain, we evaluated winter chill availability over the course of the twenty-first century by applying an ensemble of future climate scenarios. Relative to the past, projected winter chill might decline by between 9 and 12 CP under an intermediate global warming scenario and by between 9 and 24 CP under a pessimistic scenario. Despite relatively minor changes, the viability of some local apple cultivars may be jeopardized by their high CR. Results suggest that even a moderate decline in future winter chill, relative to fairly high levels observed in the past, can threaten the economic sustainability of fruit tree orchards composed of high-chill genotypes. Strategies such as growing low- to moderate-chill cultivars may be critical for sustaining future apple production in the region. The aim of this study was to assess the thermal requirements of the most important grapevine varieties in northwestern Spain to better understand the impact of climate change on their phenology. Different phenological models (GDD, GDD Triangular and UniFORC) were tested and validated to predict budburst and flowering dates of grapevines at the variety level using phenological observations collected from Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albariño between 2008 and 2019. The same modeling framework was assessed to obtain the most suitable model for this region. The parametrization of the models was carried out with the Phenological Modeling Platform (PMP) platform by means of an iterative optimization process. Phenological data for all four varieties were used to determine the best-fitted parameters for each variety and model type that best predicted budburst and flowering dates. A model calibration phase was conducted using each variety dataset independently, where the intermediate-fitted parameters for each model formulation were freely-adjusted. Afterwards, the parameter set combination of the model providing the highest performance for each variety was externally validated with the dataset of the other three varieties, which allowed us to establish one overall unique model for budburst and flowering for all varieties. Finally, the performance of this model was compared with the attained one while considering all varieties in one dataset (12 years × 4 varieties giving a total number of observations of 48). For both phenological stages, the results showed no considerable differences between the GDD and Triangular GDD models. The best parameters selected were those provided by the Treixadura GDD model for budburst (day of the year (t0) = 49 and base temperature (Tb) = 5) and those corresponding to the Godello model (t0 = 52 and Tb = 6) for flowering. Research Highlights: This paper compares the thermal requirements in three different olive-growing areas in the Mediterranean region (Toledo, central Spain; Lecce, southeastern Italy; Chaal, central Tunisia). A statistical method using a partial least square regression for daily temperatures has been applied to study the chilling and heat requirements over a continuous period. Background and Objectives: The olive is one of the main causes of pollen allergy for the population of Mediterranean cities. The physiological processes of the reproductive cycle that governs pollen emission are associated with temperature, and thermal requirements strongly regulate the different phases of the plant's life cycle. However, the point when several specific processes occur—Such as the phases within the dormancy period—Is unclear, and the transition between endodormancy and ecodormancy is not easily distinguishable from an empirical point of view. This work focuses on defining the thermal accumulation periods related to the temperature balance needed to meet the chilling and heat requirements for the metabolic activation and budbreak in olive trees. Results and Conclusions: Thermal accumulation patterns in olive trees are strongly associated with the bioclimatic conditions of olive-growing areas, and the olive flowering start dates showed significant differences between the three studied stations. Our results show that the chilling requirements were fulfilled between late autumn and early winter, although the chilling accumulation period was more evident in the coldest and most continental bioclimatic areas (central Spain). The heat accumulation period (forcing period) was clearly defined and showed a close relationship with the timing of olive flowering. Heat requirements were therefore used to generate accurate forecasting models to predict the beginning of the olive bloom and subsequent olive pollen emission. A forecasting model considering both the chilling and heat requirements was generated in Toledo, where the estimated days displayed an error of 2.0 ± 1.8 days from the observed dates. • In Citrus , cutting the flowering shoots in half restarts the meristems. • The leaves of new shoots express RNA transcripts of CiFT2 at the autumn rest period. • This allows the bud to flower even with the fruit in the cut-back shoot. • Mechanical pruning in spring favours it by promoting premature shoots. In Citrus , certain species and/or cultivars are prone to alternate bearing, i.e., a year of heavy crop (ON year) is followed by one of low flowering and light crop (OFF year), and vice-versa. To counteract the fruit effect, we propose a guided mechanical pruning initiated in the spring of an ON year and carried out annually. Our hypothesis is that this gives rise to abundant shoots with well-developed leaves that reach the floral bud inductive period ready to receive the inductive signal and, thus, to induce the bud to bloom the following spring. The experiment was carried out during four consecutive years (2013–16) using a commercial plantation of 'Nadorcott' mandarin in southwest Spain. Trees were mechanically pruned: hedging (H) or topping by completely removing the upper shoots of the canopy (T) or by cutting ½ of their length (T½). Unpruned trees were used as controls. The experiment began in the spring of an ON-year. T and T½ carried out in the spring restart the meristem and give rise new shoots that develop in summer and autumn. At the inductive period, the leaves on these new shoots showed a CiFT2 gene expression 4- and 3.7-fold higher than their respective old leaves. In the case of the T½ their buds avoided the inhibitory effect of the fruit and bloomed the following spring even with the fruit in the cut-back shoot. For the two periods of ON-OFF years of our experiment, cumulative yield of the T treated trees barely increased, whereas T½ significantly increased with respect to the unpruned trees. We conclude that cutting flowering shoots annually in half-length by means of mechanical pruning (T½), attenuates alternate bearing behaviour in 'Nadorcott' mandarin. Background: Grapevine flower number per inflorescence provides valuable information that can be used for assessing yield. Considerable research has been conducted at developing a technological tool, based on image analysis and predictive modelling. However, the behaviour of variety-independent predictive models and yield prediction capabilities on a wide set of varieties has never been evaluated., Results: Inflorescence images from 11 grapevine Vitis vinifera L. varieties were acquired under field conditions. The flower number per inflorescence and the flower number visible in the images were calculated manually, and automatically using an image analysis algorithm. These datasets were used to calibrate and evaluate the behaviour of two linear (single-variable and multivariable) and a nonlinear variety-independent model. As a result, the integrated tool composed of the image analysis algorithm and the nonlinear approach showed the highest performance and robustness (RPD = 8.32, RMSE = 37.1). The yield estimation capabilities of the flower number in conjunction with fruit set rate (R 2  = 0.79) and average berry weight (R 2  = 0.91) were also tested., Conclusion: This study proves the accuracy of flower number per inflorescence estimation using an image analysis algorithm and a nonlinear model that is generally applicable to different grapevine varieties.
