The article focuses on criminality, delinquency and the Spanish colonial justice system of the city of Santiago de Guatemala in the 18
th century. The author considers the influence of medieval Castillian legal concepts and institutions on colonial jurisprudence (derecho indiano) and explores the functioning of colonial institutions such as the Real Audiencia of Guatemala and the Cabildo (local participatory government). He also discusses the influence of indigenous customs, the social role of mestizaje and the colonial protection of Indians.- Published
