The lockdown adopted in Spain to combat the global pandemic due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) led to a significant reduction in the emission of aerosols produced by road traffic and industry. This study aims to detect changes in column aerosols in Spain due to the COVID-19 lockdown. High-quality AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) measurements of AOD (aerosol optical depth), AE (Ångström exponent) and SSA (single scattering albedo) over the period 2012–2020 are used for this purpose. Ten AERONET stations with available measurements during the lockdown and post-lockdown periods with a long previous data record are selected. The stations are well distributed throughout Spain, covering different areas and population densities. A comprehensive set of three statistical tests are applied to assess general changes in the dataset, the central tendency and low and high values for each parameter. The analyses are conducted for the 2020 lockdown and post-lockdown periods by comparing daily aerosol data with the measurements recorded for the same calendar days during the period 2012–2019. The results indicate a general increase in AOD during the lockdown and a decrease during the post-lockdown. While AE shows no overall behaviour, SSA is the parameter most sensitive to changes in anthropogenic contribution, with an overall significant increase in almost all the stations during both lockdown and post-lockdown periods. Extensive livestock grazing is a global human activity. In the Iberian Peninsula, extensive grazing and seminatural grasslands and open woodlands such as dehesas have co-evolved with human use for millennia. However, social, demographic, and economic factors are now pushing this traditional activity towards both conventional intensification and land abandonment, with consequences for the biodiversity and functioning of these seminatural ecosystems. Soils can be particularly affected by grazing abandonment due to the cessation of inputs of pre-processed organic matter (dungs and urine) and of trampling, with still poorly understood consequences for the composition, network configuration, and activity of soil microbial communities and the capacity of soils to store C. In this work, we used 20 pairs of adjacent plots (40 plots in total) located in seminatural grasslands from central Spain. For each pair, one plot was extensively grazed by livestock and the other one was abandoned. We evaluated the effects of extensive grazing abandonment on soil fertility (C and N contents, and P and K bioavailability), forage quality (fibre and protein content), and soil microbial community composition (amplicon sequencing of 16 S [bacteria] and ITS [fungi]), network coupling, and activity (extracellular hydrolytic enzymes linked to the biogeochemical cycling of C, N, P, and S). Grazing resulted in higher soil fertility in terms of C, N, and P, and grassland forage quality (lower fibre). Grazing also affected soil microbial community composition, but not richness or diversity. These effects occurred primarily through changes in nutrients and soil water availability. Actinobacteria significantly increased in abandoned plots, while Acidobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Planctomycetes decreased. Bacterial and, particularly, fungal networks were generally less coupled in abandoned plots. Furthermore, grazing resulted in greater soil enzyme activity via direct effects. These results support the notion that extensive grazing with intermediate stocking rates provides a positive effect on grass quality, soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and microbial network configuration, and thus warn about the potential negative effects of land abandonment. • Extensive grazing maintained higher soil fertility and grassland forage quality. • Extensive grazing altered soil microbial community composition, but not richness or diversity. • Abandonment decoupled microbial networks, particularly those of fungi. • Extensive grazing resulted in greater soil enzyme activity. • This study warns about the potential negative effects of land abandonment. This paper considers the influence of business cycles and economic crises on Spain's tourism competitiveness. This competitiveness is measured by its share in world tourism. Analysing the presence of unit roots in the market share series from 1958 to 2010, the permanent effects of economic crises on competitiveness are evaluated. The evidence from standard linear unit root tests indicates that crises on Spanish market shares are highly persistent. When we account for endogenously determined structural breaks, we obtain greater support for stationarity, but breakpoints are identified with major economic crises. Therefore the main conclusion obtained is that the effects of the economic shocks are not neutral on competitiveness, with the negative effects being more persistent in highly intensive crises. These crises reinforce a natural downward trend of the Spanish world tourism market share caused by the natural emergence of new competing destinations and by the maturity of the Spain's principal tourism product. This paper focuses on the validation of the empirically corrected total ozone column (TOC) data provided by the Earth Probe Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (EP-TOMS) using ground-based measurements recorded by a well-calibrated Brewer spectroradiometer located at El Arenosillo (Spain). In addition, satellite TOC observations derived from the OzoneMonitoring Instrument (OMI) with the TOMS algorithm are also used in this paper. The agreement between EP-TOMS TOC data and Brewer measurements is excellent (R² ~ 0.92) even for the period 2000-2005 when a higher EP-TOMS instrument degradation occurred. Despite its low magnitude, the EP-TOMS-Brewer relative differences depend on the solar zenith angle (SZA), showing a clear seasonal cycle with amplitude between ±2% and ±4%. Conversely, OMI-Brewer relative differences show a constant negative value around -1% with no significant dependence on SZA. No significant dependence on the ground-based to satellitebased differences with respect to the EP-TOMS scene or to the OMI crosstrack position is observed for either satellite retrieval algorithm. Finally, TOC, estimated by the two satellite instruments, have also been compared, showing a good agreement (R² ~ 0.88). Overall, we conclude that the empirical correction of the EP-TOMS data record provides a reprocessed set of high quality. However, EP-TOMS data after year 2000 should not be used in calculations of global-ozone trending due to remaining errors in the data set and because it is no longer an independent data set. This article analyses the changes in Spanish scientific culture, and therefore in science, that were caused by the Spanish Civil War. It therefore explains changes in the new Spanish scientific organizations and institutions, in the scientific community and in the new science strategies. To this end, it analyses the attitudes of the rebel side to science during the war and presents a brief summary of the purging process. It continues with the analysis of the three science projects and the institutional reorganization of science that the victors considered. Finally, it studies the chosen option, the concept of science that it involved and the institutions that grew out of it. The article closes with a brief comparative section that considers other fascist countries to highlight the specificities of the Spanish case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel analysis addresses the economic viability of biomethane production from small biogas plants in South Spain, as a claim to promote the use of green energy and reduce the consumption of natural gas. To this end, the importance of governmental incentives to reach profitability in biomethane plants is illustrated through a case study. To date, no study addressing this problem specifically for South Spain can be found. The study considers the whole process from biogas production to biomethane feeding into the grid, for three different biomethane capacities (50, 100 and 150 m3/h) and includes an exhaustive sensitivity analysis. For the three cases, implementing a biomethane plant is not viable and, therefore, not attractive for investors. Results considering biomethane governmental incentives as feed-in premia show significant improvements on the profitability of the largest plants. For example, supporting 150 m3/h biomethane production capacity plants with a premium price of only 6 €/MWh (6.6 cents/m3) results in 270 k€ NPV. Nevertheless, the smallest biomethane plants are hardly feasible. Concerning governmental support through investment subsidies, 150 m3/h plants are profitable if 10% of the investment is subsidized, whereas the smallest plants do not reach profitability even if 50% of the investment is subsidized. • A novel analysis for biomethane production in South-Spain are addressed. • The importance of governmental incentives is pointed out to reach profitability. • Incentives as feed-in tariffs showed significant outcomes for high capacity plants. • The smallest biomethane capacity plants were proved to be arduously feasible. The aims of this study were: 1) to describe the total muscular injuries, and specifically HSIs, and their corresponding missed matches; 2) to analyse their economic impact; and 3) to estimate the loss of incomes due to TV rights, in first division clubs from LaLigaTM depending on the expected and actual ranking position during the 2018/2019 season. To do that, a cross-sectional study for season 18/19 and for all players of the 20 Spanish professional football clubs was performed. The economic impact of injuries was estimated considering the missed matches and salary cost of all players and the audio-visual income loss was estimated considering the Spanish Royal Decree of Law (RDL 5/2015). The high number of muscular (270) and hamstring injuries (57) implies a high cost for professional first division football clubs, specifically € 365,811 per month for the former and € 47,388 per month for the latter. In addition, reaching a worse than expected position in LaLigaTM ranking involved a loss of 45,2 million € in TV rights incomes. From a post hoc analysis of the ADENI-UCI study (multicenter, observational, cohort, prospective study, with a follow-up period of 13 months, in 62 Intensive Medicine Services in Spain. geographical differences in the reason for denial of income in UCI as a LTSV measure are analyzed. A total of 2284 with an average age of 75.25 (12.45) years were included. 59.43% male. By means of multinominal regression adjusted by age, sex, APACHE and SOFA, was evident (by choosing the northern for reference) that age in the south was a less significantly exposed reason (OR: 0.48 (IC95%: 0.35-0.65). p.

Introduction: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common abdominal surgical emergency. No specific studies have been found that evaluate the impact of the coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) pandemic on AA and its surgical management. An analysis was made on the influence of this new pathology on the clinical course of AA., Material and Methods: Retrospective observational study was conducted on patients operated on for AA from January to April 2020. They were classified according to the time of the appendectomy, before the declaration of the state of alarm (pre-COVID-19), and after its declaration (post-COVID-19) in Spain, one the most affected countries in the world. An evaluation was made of demographic variables, duration of symptoms, type of appendicitis, surgical time, hospital stay, and postoperative complications., Results: The study included 66 patients (41 pre-COVID-19; 25 post-COVID-19) with mean age of 10.7 ± 3 and 9.3 ± 3.1; P = .073, respectively. Fever was found in a higher number of post-COVID-19 patients (52 vs. 19.5%; P = 0.013), as well as a higher CRP (72.7 ± 96.2 vs. 31.3 ± 36.2 mg/dL; P = 0.042). This group presented with a higher proportion of complicated appendicitis when compared to pre-COVID-19 (32 vs. 7.3%; P = 0.015). The mean hospital stay was longer in the post-COVID-19 group (5.6 ± 5.9 vs. 3.2 ± 4.3 days; P = 0.041). No differences were found in the time of onset of symptoms or surgical time., Conclusions: The SARS-Cov-2 pandemic influenced the time of diagnosis of appendicitis, as well as its course, and mean hospital stay. Peritonitis was more frequently seen. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare and validate the different classifications of severity in acute pancreatitis (AP) and to investigate which characteristics of the disease are associated with worse outcomes., Summary of Background Data: AP is a heterogeneous disease, ranging from uneventful cases to patients with considerable morbidity and high mortality rates. Severity classifications based on legitimate determinants of severity are important to correctly describe the course of disease., Methods: A prospective multicenter cohort study involving patients with AP from 23 hospitals in Spain. The Atlanta Classification (AC), Revised Atlanta Classification (RAC), and Determinant-based Classification (DBC) were compared. Binary logistic multivariate analysis was performed to investigate independent determinants of severity., Results: A total of 1655 patients were included; 70 patients (4.2%) died. RAC and DBC were equally superior to AC for describing the clinical course of AP. Although any kind of organ failure was associated with increased morbidity and mortality, persistent organ failure (POF) was the most significant determinant of severity. All local complications were associated with worse outcomes. Infected pancreatic necrosis correlated with high morbidity, but in the presence of POF, it was not associated to higher mortality when compared with sterile necrotizing pancreatitis. Exacerbation of previous comorbidity was associated with increased morbidity and mortality., Conclusion: The RAC and DBC both signify an advance in the description and differentiation of AP patients. Herein, we describe the complications of the disease independently associated to morbidity and mortality. Our findings are valuable not only when designing future studies on AP but also for the improvement of current classifications.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prognosis associated with bundle branch block (BBB) depending on location, time of appearance, and duration in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). From January 1998 to January 2008, we recruited 5,570 patients with acute MI. Thirty-day and 7-year all-cause mortality, according to BBB location, time of appearance, and duration were analyzed by multivariable analyses. BBB was present in 964 patients (17.3%); right BBB (RBBB) 10.6% and left BBB (LBBB) 6.7%. Overall mortality rate at 30 days was 13.2% (n = 738) and 7 years was 6.34 deaths per 100 patient-year. Both RBBB and LBBB were more frequently previous, 42.9% and 58.8%. Compared with non-BBB, all BBB groups showed higher prevalence of co-morbidities, especially rates of diabetes (49.0% vs 34.3%, p <0.001) and more often heart failure during hospitalization (54.5% vs 26.6%, p <0.001). Compared with RBBB, patients with LBBB had a higher prevalence of co-morbidities and a higher mortality, especially the new BBB, 30 days: 52.5% versus 31.6% and 7 years (incident rate): 27.2 versus 13.3 per 100 patient-year. New transient BBB had lower heart failure on admission (42.6% vs 58.3%, p = 0.008) and 30-day mortality (20.3% vs 69.6%, p <0.001) compared with permanent in both locations. New permanent RBBB was independently associated with 30-day (hazard ratio [HR] 2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.45 to 2.79) and 7-year mortality (HR 3.12, 95% CI 2.38 to 4.09). New-permanent LBBB was independently associated with 30-day (HR 2.15, 95% CI 1.47 to 3.15) and 7-year mortality (HR 2.91, 95% CI 2.08 to 4.08). Cardiovascular complications are the most important cause of death in patients on dialysis with end-stage renal disease. Antibodies reacting with β-glycoprotein I seem to play a pathogenic role in antiphospholipid syndrome and stroke and are involved in the origin of atherosclerosis. Here we evaluated the presence of anticardiolipin and anti-β-glycoprotein I antibodies together with other vascular risk factors and their relationship with mortality and cardiovascular morbidity in a cohort of 124 hemodialysis patients prospectively followed for 2 years. Of these, 41 patients were significantly positive for IgA anti-β-glycoprotein I, and the remaining had normal values. At 24 months, overall and cardiovascular mortality and thrombotic events were all significantly higher in patients with high anti-β-glycoprotein I antibodies. Multivariate analysis using Cox regression modeling found that age, hypoalbuminemia, use of dialysis catheters, and IgA β-glycoprotein I antibodies were independent risk factors for death. Thus, IgA antibodies to β-glycoprotein I are detrimental to the clinical outcome of hemodialysis patients.

Background: There is a lack of prospective studies evaluating the natural history of colonic ischaemia (CI). We performed such a study to evaluate the clinical presentation, outcome, and mortality as well as clinical variables associated with poor prognosis., Methods: An open, prospective, and multicentre study was conducted in 24 Spanish hospitals serving a population of 3.5 million people. The study included only patients who met criteria for definitive or probable CI. A website (www.colitisisquemica.org) provided logistical support., Results: A total of 364 patients met criteria for inclusion. CI was suspected clinically in only 24.2% of cases. The distribution of clinical patterns was as follows: reversible colopathy (26.1%), transient colitis (43.7%), gangrenous colitis (9.9%), fulminant pancolitis (2.5%), and chronic segmental colitis (17.9%). A total of 47 patients (12.9%) had an unfavorable outcome as defined by mortality and/or the need for surgery. Multivariate analysis identified the following signs as independent risk factors for an unfavorable outcome: abdominal pain without rectal bleeding [odds ratio (OR) 3.9; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.6-9.3], non-bloody diarrhoea (OR 10; 95% CI = 3.7-27.4), and peritoneal signs (OR 7.3; 95% CI = 2.7-19.6). Unfavorable outcomes also were more frequent in isolated right colon ischaemia (IRCI) compared with non-IRCI (40.9 vs. 10.3%, respectively; p < 0.0001). The overall mortality rate was 7.7%., Conclusions: The clinical presentation of CI is very heterogeneous, perhaps explaining why clinical suspicion of this disease is so low. The presence of IRCI, and occurrence of peritoneal signs or onset of CI as severe abdominal pain without bleeding, should alert the physician to a potentially unfavorable course.
