The design of a narrative video game for cognitive training of memory and executive functions in older adults with subjective and objective cognitive impairment is reported along with preliminary results on preferences (Study 1), user interaction experience (Study 2), and efficacy of the game (Study 3). A study of aesthetic preferences in backgrounds and avatars was implemented in 13 older adults, who were asked for their opinion on the acceptability of the plot. After completion of the design, a user interaction study was conducted in a sample of 19 older adults. In addition, a Matched Paired Experimental Design (MPED) was implemented as a preliminary test of the efficacy of the narrative video game in a sample of 22 participants with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Preferences for free violence content in videogames was supported in our sample of low-frequency adult gamers and acceptability of the plot was high. The video game was rated favourably by the older adults in terms of user preferences and acceptability. The results of the preliminary MPED study suggest that the video game could be a useful tool for cognitive training in SCD and MCI older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research studies show a strong influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on human development, and how the exposure to risk contexts in the earliest stages translates into dangers in the cognitive development of children and adolescents. To alleviate these consequences and favour development, different cognitive training programs have contributed to this field by identifying the criteria of efficacy. This systematic review identifies and synthesizes the evidence of cognitive intervention studies implemented with psychosocial risk groups carried out in Spain. The search strategy was adapted to different databases. Only studies published in English or Spanish and developed in Spain that included interventions applied in populations aged 5 to 18 years with a low SES were included. The analysis of the literature showed nine interventions that indicated an improvement in those cognitive functions worked with low SES children. The cognitive domains that most worked were executive functions, followed by social cognition and language. After reviewing the available literature, a clear scarcity of interventions carried out in Spain was observed. Variables such as age, cognitive functions or personal vulnerability were identified as factors to be taken into account in future lines of research due to their influence on minors. These findings indicate the relevance of this review to help decision-making in relation to the actions to be carried out by the competent bodies in Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Assess the efficiency of a cognitive training program using an artificial intelligence application to optimize cognitive reserve and reduce memory disturbance in patients aged 55 to 75 after Class II-III elective noncardiac surgery., Design: Experimental with random assignment., Methods: The study was conducted on 80 patients undergoing surgery at the Teknon Medical Center Hospital in Barcelona, from April 2018 to June 2021. Both groups were evaluated with cognitive tests before surgery and 7 and 30 days after surgery. The experimental group was subjected to cognitive training for 10 days before surgery to improve their cognitive reserve., Findings: Significant differences were found between the study groups 30 days after surgery in the three screening tests (Mini-Cog, T@M, and MFE). The intervention group presented with fewer cognitive and memory alterations. Age and pre-existing comorbidities were not correlated with an impact on memory impairment or cognitive function., Conclusions: A cognitive training program based on artificial intelligence, prescribed and monitored by anesthesia nurses has a positive impact on increasing cognitive reserve and reducing memory disturbance in patients aged 55 to 75 undergoing Class II to III elective, noncardiac surgery. EhcoBUTLER is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solution funded by the European Union (H2020; ID: 643566) and intended especially for elderly people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to improve their health, independence and quality of life, particularly at the social level. The purpose of this study is to assess the acceptability of ehcoBUTLER based on a survey delivered to potential users and actors involved in their care, exploring their expectations and preferences, while anticipating the system's functional requirements. The survey was delivered online to 313 participants (11% end users, 25% informal caregivers, 48% formal caregivers and 16% administration/management staff) from eight countries. Participants rated the different functionalities of ehcoBUTLER positively, 86.1% perceiving it as an interesting and useful system. Likewise, they assessed it as a commercially attractive product (75.1%). End users expressed a stronger preference for the social module. Nevertheless, they would be ready to pay a low monthly price for ehcoBUTLER. Professionals would be willing to pay choosing its functionalities modularly, but they would also expect it to be funded by the National Health System, centres or businesses. The conclusion is that all participants found ehcoBUTLER interesting, useful and ergonomic. However, to effectively implement it, it is necessary to bridge the digital gap and address the issue of insufficient investment in products aimed at older adults with cognitive impairment. Introduction/objectives: Reproductive labour refers to activities and tasks directed at caregiving and domestic roles, such as cleaning, cooking, and childcare. Productive labour refers to activities that involve economic remuneration. The aim of the present study was to analyse physical activity, sedentary behaviour, physical fitness, and cognitive performance in women with fibromyalgia who engaged, or did not engage, in productive work. Method: This cross-sectional study comprised 276 women with fibromyalgia from Andalusia (southern of Spain). Levels of physical activity (light, moderate, and vigorous) and sedentary behaviour were measured by an accelerometer. Physical fitness and cognitive performance were measured with a battery of performance-based tests. Results: More hours/week of homemaker-related tasks were associated with higher time spend in light physical activity and lower sedentary behaviour (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively). Furthermore, in comparison with those who only engaged in reproductive labour, women with fibromyalgia who engaged in productive work showed lower levels of sedentary behaviour and higher levels of light and moderate physical activity, physical fitness (except muscular strength), and cognitive performance (all, P < 0.05). Conclusions: Altogether, our findings suggest that productive work is consistently related to better physical and cognitive functioning in women with fibromyalgia. If future research corroborates causality of our findings, then, to maintain women with fibromyalgia engaging in productive work may be strived for not only because of societal or economic reasons but also for better health. However, we should keep in mind that people with fibromyalgia have a chronic condition, and therefore, adaptations at the workplace are imperative. Key Points • Women with fibromyalgia, who spend more time in reproductive labour, have higher levels of light physical activity and lower sedentary behaviour; however, it is associated with poorer general health (as lower physical fitness or cognitive performance). • Household tasks are often seen as a responsibility associated with the gender roles that women with fibromyalgia perform, despite the feelings of incapacity they cause. Policies focused on reducing reproductive labour demands for fibromyalgia patients (i.e. social help on housework or childcare) might facilitate the inclusion of daily active behaviours. • People with fibromyalgia who engage in productive work seem to have better health outcomes than those who have not; however, we cannot forget that adaptations and flexibility at the workplace are imperative. Introduction: In the process of growing societies, and especially in the digital era we live in, there is a need for a strong push for innovation that puts citizens at the center of the process from the beginning to build more resilient, cooperative and flexible communities. Different collaborative design approaches have emerged in recent decades, one of the most interesting being Living Labs, which involves user-centered design and co-creative innovation that bring together different actors and roles. However, although these new methodologies are harnessing creativity, some aspects of this new, more ecosystemic and complex vision are not clearly understood: possible barriers, how to facilitate local and operational solutions, overcoming institutional blockage, integrating new roles, etc., Methods: The incorporation of the Quintuple Helix as a driver to ensure greater coordinated participation of local actors has proven its usefulness and impact during the re-adaptation of LifeSpace (previously named Smart House Living Lab), managed by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain), a transformation based on the experiences and lessons learned during the large-scale ACTIVAGE pilot funded by the European Commission, more specifically at the Madrid Deployment Site. It involved more than 350 older adult people and other stakeholders from different areas, including family members, formal and informal caregivers, hospital service managers, third-age associations, and public service providers, forming a sense of community, which was called MAHA., Results: The living lab infrastructure evolved from a single multi-purpose environment to incorporate three harmoniously competing environments: (1) THE LAB: Headquarters for planning, demonstration, initial design phases and entry point for newcomers to the process, (2) THE CLUB: Controlled interaction environment where returning users validate solutions, focusing mainly on AHA services (MAHA CLUB), such as exergames, social interaction applications, brain training activities, etc. (3) THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: Real-life environments for free and open interaction between actors and implementation of previously validated and tested solutions., Conclusion: The Quintuple Helix model applied in LifeSpace's new vision allows a coordinated involvement of a more diverse set of actors, beyond the end-users and especially those who are not traditionally part of research and innovation processes., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Merino-Barbancho, Abril Jiménez, Mallo, Lombroni, Cea, López Nebreda, Cabrera, Fico and Arredondo.)

Although a number of cognitive deficits have been described in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), few studies have examined the use of computer-assisted cognitive training programmes in this group of people. This study sought to determine the cognitive mechanisms underlying 16 activities included in Armoni, a computerized cognitive training programme for individuals with ID, in order to validate its use with this population. Fifty adults with ID from four residential care centres in Spain underwent neuropsychological testing tapping attention, verbal memory, visual memory, comprehension, visuoperception, visuoconstruction, naming ability, verbal fluency, verbal reasoning and motor function. In addition, they performed 16 activities included in the Armoni programme. The relationships between cognitive function and the computer-based activities were assessed using Spearman correlations. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were then used to explore how cognitive function predicted the performance of individuals with ID on the programme activities. Most programme activities correlated with visuoconstruction, comprehension and naming ability. Naming ability, visual memory, comprehension and visuoconstruction contributed the most to the predictive models regarding performance on the Armoni activities. This article has two primary objectives. The first is to analyze the causes of failure in school from the standpoint of students in their final year of mandatory secondary education in Spain. The second is to associate the learning style with students' academic perspectives and their perception of the causes of failure in school. A descriptive study was conducted with a sample of students from the educational community in Valencia, Spain. Two questionnaires were used. The first, constructed by the research team, analyzes the causes of school failure. The second - the CHAEA questionnaire - diagnosed the learning style. An analysis of the results of the questionnaire on school failure resulted in four groups of causes: 1) student and family involvement in learning, 2) the student's socialization in the classroom, 3) cognitive training for the student, and 4) the family's economic and job situation. Phototest is a simple, easy and very brief test with theoretical advantages over available dementia screening tests in Spain. The objective of this study was to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of the Phototest for cognitive impairment and dementia and to compare it with that of the MMSE and the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) in an Argentine population. A phase II cross-sectional study of diagnostic tests evaluation was performed in a sample of 30 controls, 61 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI), and 56 with mild Alzheimer type dementia (DAT). The diagnostic accuracy (DA) was assessed in relation to the clinical diagnosis by calculating the area under the ROC curve (UAC), Sensitivity (Sn), and Specificity (Sp).The DA of the Phototest for a-MCI and DAT (0.93 and 0.97 [UAC]) was higher than that of the MMSE and the CDT. The cut-off points of 27/28 for DAT (Sn = 89.29 [78.1–96.0], Sp = 96.67 [82.8–99.9]) and 30/31 for a-MCI (Sn = 85.25 [73.8–93.0], Sp = 90.00 [73.5–97.9]) maximized the sum of Sn and Sp. Phototest correlates significantly with MMSE and CDT. The Phototest is an efficient instrument for the detection of mild dementia or MCI, with good accuracy and good correlation with tests measuring overall cognitive impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
