This article discusses the burden of visual impairment caused by onchocerciasis infection in Central Africa from 1990 to 2019. Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is a disease transmitted by black flies and caused by infection from a roundworm. The study used data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 dataset to map the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) of visual impairment attributable to onchocerciasis in the African region. The results showed a decrease in the prevalence and YLDs of onchocerciasis-related visual impairment over the past three decades, with the highest burden observed in the Western Sub-Saharan Africa region. The study highlights the importance of continued efforts to improve treatment coverage and raise public awareness to further reduce the burden of onchocerciasis-related visual impairment.
