Accidents while working in the construction industry source many tangible and intangible losses. Although various measures have been taken to reduce occupational accidents in the construction sector, occupational accidents are still increasing, especially in Indonesia. Meanwhile there is some literature on the relationship between personality traits and accidents, much remains to be considered before applying the research to accident prevention. Therefore, there is a need to study in detail the correlations between the Big 5 characteristics and safety behaviors, including other variables, so that preventive action can be taken as a form of occupational injury prevention. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the Big 5 personality traits, using personal values and safety culture as variables influencing safety behavior in construction workers. This study analyzes or resolves not only the direct impact of Big 5 personality traits on safety behavior of construction workers, but also the indirect impact through personal values and safety culture. Data were collected through interviews with 300 construction workers in Surabaya, Malang and Batu, EastJava, Indonesia. The results showed that the Big 5 personality had a significant positive impact on workplace safety behavior with a difference of 0.299. In addition, personal values and safety culture as intervention variables may influence the impact of Big 5 personality traits on workers’ safety behavior. The 0.788 and 0.545 Big 5 personalities have a significant impact on personal values and safety culture. One of the dominant indicators when measuring the Big 5 personality structure is neuroticism, with the highest stress factor of 0.928. Therefore, if management wants to improve worker safety behavior, it should conduct a workplace analysis to hire competent workers with a high degree of neuroticism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction industry is one of the most at risk to worker safety. The number of work accidents in Indonesia continues to increase so that by 2021 the number of work accidents will reach 234,270 cases. Therefore, in-depth research is needed to maintain the safety of all workers. Recognizing the factors that cause work accidents helps stakeholders take preventive action. It is necessary to increase worker safety behaviour by identifying its factors. Both those that occur in casual workers and permanent workers. Therefore, it is important to see whether employment status affects the safety behaviour of construction workers so that preventive measures can be taken as a form of prevention of work accidents. The research objective was to analyze the status of workers on the safety behaviour of construction workers. Data was collected through a survey method of 300 construction workers in the cities of Surabaya, Malang, and Batu in East Java, Indonesia. The results of the study show that worker status has a positive effect on construction work safety behaviour. This means that the higher the Employee Status will increase the Safety Behavior variable, with a path coefficient of 0.390. Among the indicators that are dominant in measuring the ES Worker Status construct is the Type of Worker, with the highest loading factor of 0.842. Thus, if the management wants to raise the value of the variable Safety Behavior through improving aspects of Employee Status, what need to be evaluated as a top priority is the Employee Type. The results of this study can be used as a reference in setting policies related to worker safety. Project management can determine what strategic steps need to be taken for construction workers with different types of employee statuses. so as to increase worker awareness of a culture of safety behavior. Courtyard in building contributes to the indoor thermal environment. Courtyard has a potential aspect of being a micro climate-modifier to reduce indoor air temperature during the day. This paper examines the courtyard's effect on indoor thermal environment in Indonesian contemporary boarding houses using field measurement. This paper focuses on the indoor air temperature reduction of 5 courtyard houses design of the contemporary boarding house in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. The field experiment method was used for two physical environmental variables: air temperature and relative humidity. Each sensor was covered with a paper cup wrapped with aluminum foil to protect from direct thermal radiation. Measurement was carried out for 23 days consecutively in each building. The results of the measurement exposed that the form and enclosure element is pivotal in its thermal environment design consideration for tropical climate. Meanwhile, utilizing ventilation blocks as the primary enclosure also helps reduce the air temperature in hot-humid climates. The results indicated that during the daytime, the indoor air temperatures in the courtyard and surrounding room were 0.3- 1.7°C below the outdoor air temperature. At nighttime, indoor air temperatures swing to 0.8- 1.9°C above the outdoors. The thermal environment evaluation revealed that indoor air temperatures can be categorized as a neutral temperature of the measurement period. Therefore, the use of courtyards in contemporary boarding houses has proven as a feasible means to achieve sufficient cooling effects through a full-day ventilation strategy and showed improved performance when combined with ventilated blocks. This study aims to investigate the detailed thermal environments in apartments of Surabaya, Indonesia and discuss their potential passive cooling strategies. Major thermal parameters, vertical distribution of air temperature and surface temperature of walls/ceiling were measured in one of the representative units of three types of apartments respectively, under different natural ventilation conditions. The results revealed that the unit in the old public apartment showed better thermal environments compared to those in the other two apartments. It is very difficult to achieve thermal comfort during most of the day particularly in the new public and private apartments by means of natural ventilation alone. Building orientation, insufficient shading devices, and building materials are some of the factors causing hot conditions particularly in the newly emerging middle-class apartments.
