The article reports that R. Tabor, a Plant Health and Seeds Inspector, collected a sample of leaf galls containing living aphids in June 1973 from a bonsai Ulmus parvifolia at a nursery near Guildford, Surrey, that imports bonsai directly from Japan. The aphids were identified by Dr. H.L.G. Stroyan as Tetraneura akinire Sasaki, which infests two species of Ulmus in the Far East and also Ulmus campestris in several parts of southern Europe. This aphid migrates from Ulmus to the roots of several species of grasses including rice. A specimen bonsai bearing further galls was obtained from the same nursery for further checking, and on its leaves were found live specimens of another aphid, Tinocallis ulmiparvifoliae Mats., which is confined to Ulmus in Japan, Formosa and Australia. A visit to two bonsai nurseries revealed large numbers of yet a third aphid from Japan, Tinocallis zelkowae (Tak.), living on bonsai Zelkova serrata.
