Objective: To use machine learning methods to develop prediction models of pregnancy complications in women who conceived with assisted reproductive techniques (ART)., Design: A nation-wide register-based cohort study with prospectively collected data., Setting: Swedish national registers and nationwide quality IVF register., Patient(s): all nulliparous women who achieved birth within the first 3 ART treatment cycles between 2008 and 2016 in Sweden., Intervention(s): Characteristics before the use of ART, such as demographics and medical history, were considered potential predictors in the development of before treatment prediction models. ART treatment details were further included in after treatment prediction models., Main Outcome Measure(s): Potential diagnoses of preeclampsia, placental complications (previa, accreta, and abruption), and postpartum hemorrhage were identified using the International Classification of Diseases recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth and Patient registers, respectively. Multiple prediction model algorithms were performed and compared for each outcome and treatment cycle, including logistic regression, decision tree model, naïve Bayes classification, support vector machine, random forest, and gradient boosting. The performance of each model was assessed with C statistic, and nested cross-validation was used to aid model selection and hyperparameter tuning., Result(s): A total of 14,732 women gave birth after the first (N = 7,302), second (N = 4,688), or third (N = 2,742) ART cycle, representing birth rates of 24.1%, 23.8%, and 22.0%. Overall prediction performance did not vary much across the different methods used. In the first cycle, the before treatment prediction performance was at best 66%, 66%, and 60% for preeclampsia, placental complications, and postpartum hemorrhage, respectively. Inclusion of after treatment characteristics conferred slight improvement (approximately 1%-5%), as did prediction in later cycles (approximately 1%-5%). The top influential and consistent predictors included age, region of residence, infertility diagnosis, and type of embryo transfer (fresh or frozen) in the later (2 nd and 3 rd ) cycles. Body mass index was a top predictor of preeclampsia and was also influential for placental complications but not for postpartum hemorrhage., Conclusion(s): The combined use of demographics, medical history, and ART treatment information was not enough to confidently predict serious pregnancy complications in women who conceived with ART. Background: Improved endovascular methods make it possible to treat complex ruptured aneurysms, but surgery is still needed in certain cases. We evaluated the effects on the clinical results of the changes in aneurysm treatment., Methods: The study cohort was 837 patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and one or multiple aneurysms, admitted to Dept of Neurosurgery, Uppsala University Hospital from 2012 to 2021. Demography, location and treatment of aneurysms, neurologic condition at admission and discharge, mortality and last tier treatment of high intracranial pressure (ICP) was evaluated. Functional outcome was measured using the Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) Data concerning national incidences of stroke diseases was collected from open Swedish databases., Results: Endovascular methods were used in 666 cases (79.6%). In 111 (13.3%) with stents. Surgery was performed in 115 cases (13.7%) and 56 patients (6.7%) had no aneurysm treatment. The indications for surgery were a hematoma (51 cases, 44.3%), endovascular treatment not considered safe (47 cases, 40.9%), or had been attempted without success (13 cases, 11.3%). Treatment with stent devices increased, and with surgery decreased over time. There was a trend in decrease in hemicraniectomias over time. Both the patient group admitted awake (n = 681) and unconscious (n = 156) improved significantly in consciousness between admission and discharge. Favorable outcome (GOSE 5-8) was seen in 69% for patients admitted in Hunt & Hess I-II and 25% for Hunt & Hess III-V. Mortality at one year was 10.9% and 42.7% for those admitted awake and unconscious, respectively.The number of cases decreased during the study period, which was in line with Swedish national data., Conclusions: The incidence of patients with SAH gradually decreased in our material, in line with national data. Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a common and increasing tick-borne disease in Europe. The risk of acquiring a Borrelia infection after a tick bite is not fully known. Therefore, we investigated the incidence of Borrelia infection after a bite by a Borrelia-infected tick and if the Borrelia load and/or the duration of tick-feeding influenced the risk of infection. During 2008-2009, ticks and blood samples were collected from 1546 tick-bitten persons from Sweden and the Åland Islands, Finland. Follow-up blood samples were taken 3 months after the tick bite. The duration of tick feeding was microscopically estimated and Borrelia was detected and quantified in ticks by real-time PCR. Anti-Borrelia antibodies were detected in sera using ELISA tests and immunoblot. Five percent (78/1546) of the study participants developed Borrelia infection (LB diagnosis and/or seroconversion) after a tick bite (45% bitten by Borrelia-infected ticks and 55% bitten by uninfected ticks). Of these, 33 developed LB (whereof 9 also seroconverted) while 45 participants seroconverted only. Experience of non-specific symptoms was more frequently reported by Borrelia-infected participants compared to uninfected participants. All who seroconverted removed "their" ticks significantly later than those who did not. The Borrelia load in the ticks did not explain the risk of seroconversion. Regional and sex differences in the Borrelia seroprevalence were found. Aims: The goal of this research project was to explore circumstances surrounding each drowning death occurring to children and adolescents ages 0-17 in Sweden during the years 1998-2007., Methods: Records from the National Board of Forensic Medicine (NBFM) and other sources were analysed. We collected information on children's personal characteristics (sex, age, ethnic background, weight, height, physical condition, and pre-existing health conditions) and the circumstances of deaths (time and place of occurrence, type of drowning, resuscitation efforts and medical care given, for example). We also collected information on prevention factors: the physical environment, adult supervision, whether or not the child could swim, and if the child was using a personal flotation device at the time of death., Results: Our analysis showed that 109 children had drowned in Sweden during the study period - of this group, 96 had died from unintentional causes. Children from immigrant backgrounds, particularly with families coming from the Middle East and Iran, were inordinately represented in the group of victims who had died from unintentional drowning deaths. Other risk factors included: coming from a single parent-headed family, alcohol use by older victims and a lack of ability to swim., Conclusions: Prevention efforts to prevent drowning in the future should focus on preventing alcohol use by young bathers; better fencing around swimming sites; improved coverage of swimming lessons to all children in Sweden, especially children from immigrant families; more education on drowning risks for single parents; and better awareness by adults on the need for constant supervision of children and adolescents in and near water.

Few studies have assessed if Sweden's injury prevention work has been equally effective for children of different socio-economic backgrounds. The goal of this paper is to review the country's injury rates for children over time, stratified by socio-economic status (SES), to see if the effects are similar across SES levels. This study employs a retrospective case-control study design, using data from the hospitalisation records of 51,225 children, which were linked to family socio-economic data. Children and adolescents in families receiving social welfare benefits, and those living with single parents and mothers with less education had higher risks of injuries leading to hospitalisation. The population-based safety work over the past decades seems to have had only minor effects on reducing the impact of socio-economic based difference in injury risks to younger Swedes.
