The authors used cancer registry data to assess the incidence rate of second primary cancers among chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients and the long-term survival of CML patients before the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors. In the Swedish Cancer Registry, the authors identified 2,753 adult CML patients diagnosed between 1970 and 1995 who were followed through December 2007. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and relative survival ratios were computed. With a total of 145 subsequent primary malignancies, an increased incidence rate of second malignancy was found for stomach cancer (SIR = 2.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33, 5.08), skin cancer (SIR = 5.36, 95% CI: 3.18, 8.47), urogenital tract cancer (SIR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.15, 2.21), and lymphoid leukemia (SIR = 5.53, 95% CI: 1.79, 12.89). Long-term relative survival figures showed that CML was related, in the era prior to the introduction of imatinib, to a very steep decline in survival (2 years from diagnosis, relative survival = 51%, 95% CI: 49, 53). This was in spite of a marginal improvement after 1985, possibly related to the introduction of interferon-α for treatment. These estimates constitute a relevant reference for future studies and a benchmark for comparisons with prognosis in CML patients after chronic use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

This paper summarizes a comprehensive study of cancer survival in Sweden from 1960 to 1998. A total of 1021421 persons and 40 different cancer sites were included in the analyses. The main outcome measure is the relative survival rate (RSR) for different sites and follow-up times after diagnosis. The 10-year RSR for all sites combined has increased steadily-from 26.6% among men and 41.8% among women in the 1960s, to 44.6% (men) and 57.6% (women) in the 1990s. The expectation of life for a person diagnosed with cancer today is about 7 years longer than that of one diagnosed during the mid-1960s. About 3 years are gained due to changes in the relative distribution of various cancer types and about 4 years due to improved relative survival. During the 1990s substantial survival improvements were observed not only for uncommon types, such as testicular cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma and some other haematologic malignancies, but also for cancer of the rectum, kidney and malignant melanoma. Survival for breast and cervical cancer also improved during the 1990s, but not that for pancreatic, liver or lung cancer.

Objective: To examine incidence of cancer and cancer mortality in relation to high blood pressure., Design: A longitudinal study of middle-aged men from a random population sample., Setting: Göteborg, Sweden., Subjects: We studied 7396 men aged 47-55 years without diagnosed cancer at baseline (1970-1973)., Main Outcome Measures: Incidence of cancer and mortality from cancer., Results: By the end of December 1992, 1401 men had been diagnosed with cancer at any site and 651 had died from cancer. Of the men in the highest fifth of the systolic blood pressure distribution (above 166 mmHg) 126 per 10000 observation years were diagnosed with cancer at any site, compared with 91 per 10000 in the lowest fifth [below 130 mmHg; relative risk after adjustment for age, smoking, body mass index, treatment for hypertension and leisure time physical activity 1.41 (95% confidence interval 1.19-1.68); P for trend 0.0001]. Of men in the highest fifth, 55 per 10000 observation years died from cancer, compared with 42 in the lowest [adjusted relative risk 1.41 (1.09-1.82); P for trend 0.01]. Several types of tumour tended to be more common among men with hypertension, but only genito-urinary cancers [age-adjusted relative risk 1.39 (1.04-1.85)] and non-melanoma skin cancer [age-adjusted relative risk 1.98 (1.12-3.51)] were significantly so. Findings were similar for diastolic blood pressure and if data for the first 5 years of follow-up were excluded. There was an increase in risk of cancer also during the first 5 years [adjusted relative risk 1.80 (1.10-2.92) for systolic blood pressure and 1.77 (1.05-2.99) for diastolic blood pressure]., Conclusions: We found an excess risk of cancer and of death from cancer for men with high blood pressure. Although the increase in risk was comparatively modest, the findings are of public health importance, insofar as both hypertension and cancer are common conditions.

The causes of death among the 93 chemists belonging to a cohort of 857 men, who graduated from the Schools of Chemical Engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, and the Chalmers Institute of Technology (CTH), Gothenburg, Sweden, during the years 1930 to 1950, were studied. The group was followed until the end of 1974. There was a significant increase of cancer, particularly of leukemias/malignant lymphomas and of urogenital tumors. The study indicated that chemists, who continued with laboratory work for at least a few years after graduation and specifically worked with organic compounds, displayed an increased frequency of death from cancer.
