Highlights: [•] We performed life cycle assessments of low energy homes in the US and Switzerland. [•] We assessed the effect of rating and construction practices on energy-related impacts. [•] The Swiss home performed better than the US building regarding all selected impacts. [•] The regional electricity mix had the greatest influence on the selected impacts.
