Abstract

The author suggests a framework for research into amateur dramatic societies in New South Wales regional communities between 1845 and 1970. To conduct her research, she analyzed the archive of the British Drama League which is a semi-voluntary organization established in Sydney in 1937. She discusses the two important functions of amateur dramatic societies which existed in the Australian country towns since the 1850s.
