Migration has been one of the most significant challenges faced by humanity throughout history. Since 2011, the number of immigrants coming to Türkiye has increased significantly due to the Syrian Civil War and other regional conflicts. This situation has brought the issue of migration to the forefront in Türkiye and has influenced perceptions of immigrants. This research aims to understand the role of religion in shaping views on immigration. The perspective on the choice to migrate raises questions about the impact of Islam, which upholds minority rights and promotes altruistic values, such as generosity and hospitality, on the perception of immigrants. However, within the historical context of the Republic of Türkiye, the secular segment harbours negative perceptions of Islam, which could extend to unfavourable views of Muslim emigrants from Syria. The research will be conducted using the document analysis method and a qualitative research approach. Through the analysis of these documents, the research aims to identify the influences of Islam on the perception of immigrants. Objective: To compare the results of perinatal outcomes between Syrian refugees and Turkish women between 2016 and 2020. Methods: The birth results of 17,997 participants (Syrian refugees: 3579 and Turkish women: 14,418) who delivered in the Labor Department of our hospital between January 2016 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Maternal age was younger (24.73 ± 6.08 vs. 27.4 ± 5.91 years, p < 0.001) and adolescent pregnancy rate was higher (19.4% vs. 5.6%, p < 0.001) in Syrian refuges than in Turkish women. Bishop scores on admission (4.6 ± 1.6 vs. 4.4 ± 1.1, p < 0.001), birth weight (3088.19 ± 575.32 g vs. 3109.76 ± 540.89 g, p = 0.044), low birth weight (11.3% vs. 9.7%, p = 0.004), and the rate of primary cesarean deliveries (10.1% vs. 15.8%, p < 0.001) were also statistically different. Additionally, the rates of anemia (65.9% vs. 29.2%, p < 0.001), preeclampsia (1.4% vs. 2.7%, p < 0.001), stillbirth (1.3% vs. 0.6%, p < 0.001), preterm premature rupture of membranes (2.7% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.002), and obstetric complications were different between the groups. Conclusions: This study showed that inadequate antenatal care, communication and language barrier problems in Syrian refugees caused some adverse perinatal outcomes. All birth data of Syrian refugees must be disclosed by the Ministry of Health to confirm the accuracy of our data. Significance: What is already known on this subject? Syrian refugees did not receive adequate antenatal care, and some adverse perinatal outcomes were observed more frequently due to communication and language barrier problems. What does this study add? This study showed that more planned-programmed antenatal care-follow-up services should be provided, communication and language problems should be minimized, refugees should benefit more from health services, and effective-appropriate contraception methods should be provided to reduce negative perinatal outcomes. The present paper analyses and evaluates spoken discourse in the bilingual classroom at Damascus University. It looks at the mechanism of classroom interaction: the use of questions, initiations, repetitions and expansions. Although this paper deals with classroom interaction at Damascus University, it is believed that the results arrived at may be of a more general interest. Video- and audio-recordings of interaction in six EFL classrooms at the ESP Centre, Damascus University are examined in detail. The findings of this research show that classroom language is artificial; this can be exemplified by the teacher's simplified input, his use of display questions that restrict students' responses and his greater number of initiations. This type of discourse is usually described as "artificial", "contrived" and deliberately "planned" for practising the language. It contrasts with other types of language produced in real communicative discourse described as "natural" or "authentic". Given this, EFL learners find themselves unable to assign any communicative value to the forms of the language they learn through controlled interaction. Consequently, this paper suggests ways of improving spoken discourse in the EFL classroom to make it less artificial and more genuine.

Reports a study of listening problems encountered in the English-as-a-foreign-language classroom in the English for Specific Purposes Centre at Damascus University in Syria. Looks particularly at learner strategies, features of the listening text, characteristics of the speaker, attitudes of the listener, the task to be completed as a result of understanding the text, and the degree of visual or written support for the aural input. Natural disasters like earthquakes have direct and indirect association with major adverse cardiac events. They can impact cardiovascular health by multiple mechanisms not to mention their impact on cardiovascular care and services. Besides the humanitarian tragedy that calls attention globally, we as part of cardiovascular community are concerned with the short and long outcomes of those who survived the recent Turkey and Syria earthquake tragedy. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to draw attention of cardiovascular healthcare providers to the anticipated cardiovascular issues that may arise in survivors on short- and long-term postearthquakes to ensure proper screening and earlier management of this population. With the anticipated increase in natural disasters in future considering climate changes, geological factors, and human activities, the cardiovascular healthcare providers as part of medical community should be aware of the high rate of cardiovascular disease burden that can occur among survivors of earthquakes and other natural disasters, so, they should act accordingly in terms of preparedness measures, adequate response planning starting from services re-allocation to personnel training and enhancing access to medical and cardiac care in both acute and chronic contexts, not to mention screening and risk-stratifying the patients to optimize their management., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
