Objectives: As studies on mental disorders in victims of occupational injury or disease are limited, this study aims to evaluate the risk of, and factors associated with, the development of mental illness in patients with occupational injury or disease using insurance claims data from Taiwan. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed insurance records in Taiwan to identify 18,285 adults who experienced occupational injury or disease in 2002–2013 and 18,285 adults without occupational injury or disease who were matched by propensity score. The risks of mental disorders during a follow-up period of up to 2 years were estimated and compared between the two cohorts. Results: After controlling for other variables, the odds of mental illness in patients with occupational injury or disease was significantly higher compared to patients without occupational injury or disease. Additional factors associated with higher odds of mental disorders included female gender, age ≥ 30 years (vs. 20–29 years), Charlson comorbidity index ≥ 1, occupation category of labor union member, soldier, insured by social security, religious group member (vs. private or government employee), lower premium-based monthly salary (≤ 576 US$), treatment at a district hospital or clinic (vs. medical center), treatment at a publically-owned or consortium-owned hospital (vs. private hospital), and central or southeast geographic location (vs. Taipei). The main types of mental illness were anxiety disorder (2.79%) and other psychoses (3.29%). In this study, the 28 primary colors and 11 complementary colors suggested by Chang et al in their investigation on building colors in Wanhua District of Taipei City were taken as color samples. The two‐color combination mode was adopted to obtain 308 simulation photos, and two‐color harmony was discussed from the perspective of visual evaluation using psychophysical tests. This study explored building façade color harmony in the CIELAB color space, and the relationship between the color attributes (hue, lightness, and chroma) and the color harmony, and between the differences of the color attributes and color harmony. It found that a high lightness of a building's primary color is associated with a high level of building color harmony, while the color harmony is reduced when the color falls in the green or blue sector in the CIELAB color space; a greater lightness difference between building façade colors is associated with a higher level of building color harmony, while the colors are disharmonized when they tend to the blue sector in the CIELAB color space. The contribution of this study is to summarize the principles for the application of building color harmony in urban renewal, and proposed suggestions on building color harmony in the urban renewal process. The associations of air pollution with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have not yet been fully studied. We enrolled 8,497 Taipei City residents older than 65 years and calculated the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Taiwanese Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Proteinuria was assessed via dipstick on voided urine. CKD prevalence and risk of progression were defined according to the KDIGO 2012 guidelines. Land-use regression models were used to estimate the participants’ one-year exposures to PM of different sizes and traffic-related exhaust, PM 2.5 absorbance, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and NO x . Generalized linear regressions and logistic regressions were used to examine the associations of one-year air pollution exposures with eGFR, proteinuria, CKD prevalence and risk of progression. The results showed that the interquartile range (IQR) increments of PM 2.5 absorbance (0.4 × 10 −5 /m) and NO 2 (7.0 μg/m 3 ) were associated with a 1.07% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.54–1.57] and 0.84% (95% CI: 0.37–1.32) lower eGFR, respectively; such relationships were magnified in subjects who had an eGFR >60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 or who were non-diabetic. Similar associations were also observed for PM 10 and PM 2.5-10 . Two-pollutant models showed that PM 10 and PM 2.5 absorbance were associated with a lower eGFR. The odd ratios (ORs) of CKD prevalence and risk of progression also increased with exposures to PM 2.5 absorbance and NO 2. In summary, one-year exposures to traffic-related air pollution were associated with lower eGFR, higher CKD prevalence, and increased risk of CKD progression among the elderly population. Purpose: This retrospective study aimed to determine the effects of diabetes on overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with newly diagnosed colon cancers, with particular focus on the impact of diabetes on survival at each stage of colon cancer. Methods: From January 1999 to January 2008, 2762 consecutive patients diagnosed with colon cancer in Taipei Veterans General Hospital were enrolled. The general characteristics as well as presence of diabetes prior to colon cancer diagnosis were identified. Cox proportional hazard analyses were used for prognostic factors determination; and survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank test. Results: A total of 469 patients (17%) had diabetes at diagnosis of colon cancer. Patients with diabetes had baseline characteristics comparable to those without diabetes with the exception that the patients with diabetes were older (>65 years). Diabetes significantly and negatively impacted OS and CSS in multivariate analyses. After adjusting for possible confounding factors, the prognostic impact of diabetes on OS and CSS was particularly significant in patients with stage II colon cancer. Conclusions: Diabetes is a poor prognostic factor in patients with newly diagnosed colon cancer, and it may directly impact the tumor behavior of stage II disease.
