With service industries achieving almost 70% of GDP, Taiwan has witnessed a major shift in its economic structure, similar to the trends that have been observed elsewhere. The retail sector has shown enormous growth, and Taiwan has seen tremendous growth in convenience stores in recent years, as their density has peaked in many Asian countries. Operating efficiency has become a critical element of success and survival for convenience stores in a highly competitive environment. In this paper, we apply Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to investigate the productivity efficiency and monitor the performance of convenience stores, characterized by multiple inputs and outputs. The paper also offers a distribution service system model and management matrix to examine the competitiveness of the store chain as a whole. The findings indicate that DEA can provide useful diagnostic information, and suggest ways to improve efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Lorlatinib was found to have activity in ALK-positive NSCLC in a global phase 1 and 2 study. We report an ongoing phase 2 study in Chinese patients with ALK-positive advanced or metastatic NSCLC., Methods: Open-label, dual-cohort study (NCT03909971); patients had progressive disease after ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment (cohort 1: previous crizotinib; cohort 2: one ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor other than crizotinib [±prior crizotinib]), more than or equal to one unirradiated extracranial target lesion, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 to 2. Patients received oral lorlatinib 100 mg once daily in continuous 21-day cycles. Primary end point: objective response in cohort 1 by independent central radiology (ICR) according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors version 1.1. Analyses were based on patients receiving more than or equal to one dose., Results: At data cutoff (August 10, 2020), 109 patients were enrolled (cohort 1: n = 67; cohort 2: n = 42). A total of 47 patients in cohort 1 (70.1%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 57.7-80.7, p < 0.0001; primary end point) and 20 patients in cohort 2 (47.6%, 95% CI: 32.0-63.6, secondary end point) achieved objective response by ICR. Median progression-free survival was not reached in cohort 1 and was 5.6 months in cohort 2. In patients with brain lesions at baseline, 29 of 36 patients in cohort 1 (80.6%, 95% CI: 64.0-91.8) and 10 of 21 patients in cohort 2 (47.6%, 95% CI: 25.7-70.2) achieved objective intracranial response by ICR. Hypercholesterolemia (92.7%) and hypertriglyceridemia (90.8%) (cluster terms) were common treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). Nine patients (8.3%) had serious TRAEs; one permanently discontinued from treatment because of TRAEs., Conclusions: Lorlatinib was found to have a robust and durable response and high intracranial objective response in previously treated Chinese patients with ALK-positive NSCLC., (Copyright © 2022 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. Limited evidence is available on the risk differences in the development of stroke subtypes in relation to particular clustering patterns of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. A follow-up study of a Chinese cohort involving 10,292 individuals was performed to assess the roles of cluster patterns of the MetS components in the prediction of incident stroke subtypes. During follow-up, there were 161 incident cases of ischemic strokes and 41 incident cases of hemorrhagic strokes. Among MetS components, only the hypertensive trait was associated with significantly elevated risks of both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Furthermore, MetS with hypertension as components was associated with increased risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (adjusted hazards ratio (95% confidence interval) was 2.96 (1.94-4.50) and 2.93 (1.25-6.90), respectively) as compared with those who had neither hypertension nor MetS. Notably, as the number of the MetS components increased, the risk of ischemic stroke significantly and dose-dependently increased. This implies a cumulative effect of MetS components in elevating the risk of ischemic stroke. These findings suggest that MetS comprises heterogenous clusters with respect to the risk of developing the subtype of stroke.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known familial disease, although the genetics of this complex condition remains unclear. Recent evidence suggests the significance of maternal inheritance. However, the pattern of family aggregation and the influence of other family relatives on the mode of transmission in Chinese patients with diabetes are lacking., Methods: We interviewed 449 patients (151 men and 298 women) with type 2 DM who were aged between 35 and 74 years with a mean age of 58 +/- 1 years in a referral hospital in central Taiwan. We recorded a detailed family history of diabetes for each patient., Results: Overall, 60% of diabetic patients had at least one diabetic family member. Among these index patients, 22.5% had a diabetic mother compared with 12.0% who had a diabetic father (p < 0.001). Approximately 29% of diabetic patients had at least one diabetic sister compared with 24% who had at least one diabetic brother (p = 0.13). A total of 27% of diabetic men had a diabetic mother, compared with 20% of diabetic women. Women with diabetes had more diabetic sisters than did diabetic men. In contrast, diabetic men had a significantly increased percentage of diabetic family members on the maternal side or paternal uncles or aunts than did diabetic women. The percentage of diabetic patients who had a diabetic mother decreased as their age increased. The maternal effect disappeared in the diabetic patients who were over 65 years old. Statistical differences between diabetic fathers and mothers were observed when DM was diagnosed in patients under 65 years of age., Conclusions: We documented the presence of family aggregation and significant maternal inheritance in Chinese patients with type 2 DM in Taiwan. Further prospective study is needed to monitor the offspring of diabetic parents and other relatives in order to clarify the true mode of family aggregation and maternal transmission of type 2 DM.

Background and Purpose: A subsample of 147 Chinese subjects from a population-based study of cardiovascular diseases (Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor Two-Township Study) participated in an ancillary study on extracranial carotid color duplex ultrasonography that aimed to assess the relations of coagulation factors to stroke and carotid atherosclerosis., Methods: Logistic models were used to study the associations between cardiovascular disease risk factors and stroke/carotid atherosclerosis, controlling for the effects of age and sex., Results: Stroke was significantly associated with hypertension and high values of plasma glucose but not with fibrinogen, factor VIIc, or factor VIIIc. Carotid plaques identified in this study were mostly mild and moderate. The presence of these mild and moderate carotid plaques was significantly associated with high values of factor VIII activity, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypertension. The highest tertile of factor VIIIc (> 1.53) was associated with an odds ratio of 3.35 for carotid atherosclerosis when compared with the lowest tertile (< 1.20). A multiple logistic regression including all significant risk factors showed that the degree of association between factor VIIIc and atherosclerosis was attenuated to an odds ratio of 2.65 (P = .061)., Conclusions: In the present study, the roles of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia have been implicated in the pathogenesis of carotid atherosclerosis, and roles for hypertension and hyperglycemia in stroke were indicated. A positive association between factor VIIIc and carotid atherosclerosis in this Chinese population was found. Whether this association is independent of the effect of other cardiovascular risk factors awaits further study.

The role of hemostatic factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease has gained much attention recently. Information about hemostatic factors, and their age patterns is sparse for orientals. With the data collected in the Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor Two-township Study in Taiwan, this study shows that, in general, the older the age, the stronger the tendency toward thrombosis. With advancing age, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and antithrombin-III level decreased steadily; but mean values of fibrinogen, factor VIIc, and factor VIIIc increased. Gender differences in the age patterns of the above factors are carefully described. Curvilinear relations between hemostatic factors and age were demonstrated for adults aged 18 and above for all hemostatic factors studied. This curvilinearity should be taken into consideration when adjusting for the effect of age in data analysis to avoid residual confounding, particularly when the age range of the study subjects is wide.
