Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) worldwide. Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of ADPKD in Taiwan remains unavailable. In this consensus statement, we summarize updated information on clinical features of international and domestic patients with ADPKD, followed by suggestions for optimal diagnosis and care in Taiwan. Specifically, counselling for at-risk minors and reproductive issues can be important, including ethical dilemmas surrounding prenatal diagnosis and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Studies reveal that ADPKD typically remains asymptomatic until the fourth decade of life, with symptoms resulting from cystic expansion with visceral compression, or rupture. The diagnosis can be made based on a detailed family history, followed by imaging studies (ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging). Genetic testing is reserved for atypical cases mostly. Common tools for prognosis prediction include total kidney volume, Mayo classification and PROPKD/genetic score. Screening and management of complications such as hypertension, proteinuria, urological infections, intracranial aneurysms, are also crucial for improving outcome. We suggest that the optimal management strategies of patients with ADPKD include general medical care, dietary recommendations and ADPKD-specific treatments. Key points include rigorous blood pressure control, dietary sodium restriction and Tolvaptan use, whereas the evidence for somatostatin analogues and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors remains limited. Purpose: Coronavirus disease pandemic makes high requirements in delivering remote and efficient communication, and patient education. Because of the increases of digital and social media applications in Taiwan, we aim to apply Artificial Intelligence of LINE Chatbot to improve the self-care ability of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis., Materials and Methods: We conducted the project since 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2022. We designed an automatically replied Chatbot system, and divided into six scopes of interaction interfaces, including peritoneal dialysis technique operation video, clinical reminder, home caring, hospital registration service, dietary guideline, and Automatic Peritoneal dialysis guidance. We surveyed patients' satisfaction with the LINE Chatbot 3 months later by the Likert 1-5 score-based questionnaire and the higher score indicated higher satisfaction., Results: There were 440 patients who joined the PD AI Chatbot study and use the Chatbot, but the satisfaction questionnaire recovery rate was only 297 patients. We found that 91.7% of participants agreed 'Overall satisfaction with patient intelligent Chatbot application'. More than 4 points accounted for 86.6%. We traced every click in each section of the Chatbot and explored the potential scenario patients face. The Chatbot statistically significant reduced infection rate of exit site and tunnel infection before using (p = .049 and .024). Furthermore, peritonitis rate decreased from 0.93 to 0.8/100 patient month after using Artificial Intelligence technique. Peritoneal dialysis Artificial Intelligence Chatbot had similar effect with face-to-face education., Conclusion: The innovative Chatbot allowed delivering remote and digital information's to improve patients' self-care ability. Peritoneal dialysis patients were highly recognized and satisfied with the tools. Aim: Laboratory deficit-based frailty index (LFI) exhibited outcome-prediction ability in the elderly, but not in those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We hypothesized that LFI results might have outcome correlation and correlate closely with other instruments in ESRD patients., Methods: We prospectively enroled ESRD patients between 2014 and 2015 and administered self-report frailty instruments (Strawbridge questionnaire, Edmonton frail scale (EFS), Groningen frailty indicator (GFI), Tilburg frailty indicator, G8 questionnaire and FRAIL scale), and Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) scale, with two types of LFI calculated. They were followed up until June 30, 2017. Correlations between the results of six instruments, CHS scale, and those of LFI were identified, followed by Kaplan-Meier survival analyses and logistic regression analyses to compare those with high and low LFI., Results: The frailty prevalence was 33.3% (CHS), 78.8% Strawbridge questionnaire, 45.5% (EFS), 57.6% (GFI), 27.3% (Tilburg frailty indicator), 84.8% (G8) and 18.2% (FRAIL) among ESRD participants. LFI-1 results were significantly correlated with those of LFI-2 (P < 0.01), EFS (P = 0.04) and GFI (P < 0.01), while LFI-2 results were not. Those with CHS or GFI-identified frailty had significantly lower 1,25-(OH) 2 -D levels than those without. After 32.3 ± 5.4 months, patients with high LFI-1 scores, but not LFI-2, had a significantly higher mortality than those with lower scores. GFI and EFS scores were also independently associated with LFI-1, while CHS scores exhibited borderline association only., Conclusion: Among a group of predominantly older ESRD patients, LFI differentiates patients with good and poor outcomes, supporting its applicability in these patients., (© 2019 Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology.)

Oral health impacts the physical and psychological comfort and the quality of life of clients in long-term care. The programs to prevent or delay disability care advocated under Taiwan's Long-Term Care Plan 2.0 address oral health care, highlighting the importance of oral health care for clients in long-term care. This article discusses three concepts of oral health care for clients who are in long-term care. These include: the relationship between oral conditions and general health, oral care and dysphagia, and oral health and hydration. In addition, oral health care strategies for long-term care facilities are discussed. It is hoped that this article will encourage long-term care practitioners to pay close attention to the issue of oral health and to implement appropriate oral health care for their long-term-care clients.

Aim: Increased oxidative stress significantly modifies the outcome of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and is counteracted by antioxidative capacity. We aimed to investigate whether antioxidant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influence the outcome of ESRD individuals and the influences exerted by DM, which has not been tested before., Methods: We prospectively enrolled multi-centre ESRD patients of Han Chinese origin between 2002 and 2003, recording their antioxidant (superoxide dismutase [SOD2], glutathione peroxidase [GPX1]) and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) genotyping results, and stratified based on DM. They were followed up until 2008, with risk factors for mortality analyzed by Cox proportional hazard regression., Results: We discovered that diabetic ESRD carriers of CC genotype of SOD2 exon 2 had an increased risk of mortality compared to non-diabetic ones with other genotypes (hazard ratio [HR] 4.04, P = 0.04), while GPX1 SNPs had no influence. Interactions between SOD2 and PPAR-γ SNPs regarding the mortality influence were also detected (for SOD2 CC genotype x PPAR-γ exon 6 CT genotype, HR 3.19, P = 0.008), suggesting the importance of considering a combination panel of SNPs on patient survival., Conclusion: This might be the largest study focusing on the relationship between antioxidant SNPs and the outcomes of diabetic ESRD patients of Han Chinese origin. Polycystic kidney disease (PCKD) is the most common hereditary cause of end-stage renal disease. The complications associated with this disease may affect the performance of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes between patients on PD with PCKD and without PCKD.We extracted an incident cohort of adult (≥ 20 years old) patients on long-term PD from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with PCKD were identified by specific diagnosis codes. We recorded baseline comorbidities, socioeconomic status, timing of referral to a nephrologist, prior hemodialysis history before PD, and the type of PD modalities. We compared the risk of death, technique failure, peritonitis, hospitalization, and outpatient visiting as well as overall medical expenditure between the patients with PCKD and a groups of patients without PCKD who were propensity-score matched (1:3). The analysis was carried out by various Cox regression models that considered competing risk and time-varying coefficients. We enrolled 139 patients with PCKD and 7739 patients without PCKD who started long-term PD between 1999 and 2010. Patients with PCKD were less comorbid and more often treated with automated PD. In the propensity-score matched analysis, both overall survival and technique survival did not differ between the patients and the result was similar for hospitalization and peritonitis after adjusting for the application of automated PD. Furthermore, the overall annual medical expenditures were similar between the patients with and without PCKD. PD patients with PCKD are comparable to PD patients without PCKD in terms of risk of death, peritonitis, technique failure, and hospitalization in the present study. Furthermore, the medical expenses of the 2 groups after initiation of PD are also indistinguishable.

Polycystic kidney disease (PCKD) is the most common hereditary cause of end-stage renal disease, the complications of which may prevent the choice of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aim of this study was to explore the effects of dialysis modality on outcomes in patients with PCKD. We extracted a cohort of 1417 adult patients with PCKD initiating long-term dialysis therapy in 1999-2010 from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, among which 125 patients chose PD. The patients on HD were older and had a higher comorbidity index compared to those on PD. We compared the risks for death, hospitalization and medical expenditures between the patients on PD and propensity-score matched patients on hemodialysis (HD). The overall survival did not differ between the patients on PD and HD. The patients on PD tended to have higher hazard ratios (HR) for the first episode of hospitalization (adjusted HR 1.34 [95% CI, 1.04-1.79]). The annual medical expenses were 10% lower for the patients on PD. PD is an equivalent choice of renal replacement therapy to HD for patients with PCKD in terms of survival. Although the patients on PD had a higher risk for hospitalization, the medical expenditure for PD was 10% lower.

Background: The clinical courses and long-term outcomes of viridans streptococcus (VS) peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis remain unclear., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all PD patients in a single center with gram-positive cocci (GPC) peritonitis between 2005 and 2011, and divided them into 3 groups: VS, other streptococci and other GPC (apart from VS). Clinical characteristics and outcomes of the VS group were compared with the other streptococci and other GPC groups, with prognostic factors determined., Results: A total of 140 patients with 168 episodes of GPC peritonitis (44% of all peritonitis) were identified over 7 years. Among these, 18 patients (13%) developed VS peritonitis, while 14 patients (10%) developed other streptococcal peritonitis. Patients with VS peritonitis had a high cure rate by antibiotic alone (94%), despite a high polymicrobial yield frequency (28%). We found that VS peritonitis carried a lower risk of Tenckhoff catheter removal and relapsing episodes than other GPC peritonitis (6% vs 11%), and a lower mortality than other streptococci peritonitis (0% vs 7%). However, after the index peritonitis episodes, VS, other streptococci, and other GPC group had a significantly increased peritonitis incidence compared with the period before the index peritonitis (all p < 0.01). Patients with VS peritonitis had a significantly higher incidence of refractory peritonitis compared with other streptococci or other GPC peritonitis in the long term (both p < 0.01)., Conclusions: VS poses a higher risk of subsequent refractory peritonitis after the index episode as compared with other streptococcal or GPC peritonitis. Background: Multidisciplinary care is advocated as an effective chronic kidney disease treatment program in a few, but not all, studies. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of multidisciplinary care on renal outcome and patient survival using a larger cohort., Method: A total 1382 chronic kidney disease patients, ages 18-80 years, with chronic kidney disease stage 3B-5, in nephrology outpatient clinics were enrolled. Using age, sex, chronic kidney disease stage, and diabetes mellitus as variables, 592 multidisciplinary care program participants were matched with 614 nonmultidisciplinary care patients. The primary outcomes were long-term renal replacement therapy and mortality. Secondary outcomes included changes of biochemical markers and blood pressure, infection hospitalization, cardiovascular events, and emergent start of long-term dialysis. Annual medical costs were compared., Results: There were no between-group differences regarding mortality. In the multivariate competing-risk regression model, the multidisciplinary care group had a better renal survival (hazard ratio 0.640; 95% confidence interval, 0.484-0.847; P = .002). This effect was most prominent in stage 4 (hazard ratio 0.375; 95% confidence interval, 0.219-0.640; P < .001), but not in stage 3B and 5 patients. The multidisciplinary care group showed a slower estimated glomerular filtration rate decline (-2.57 vs -3.74 mL/min/1.73 m(2), P = .021), and a smaller increase in phosphate (+ 0.03 vs + 0.33 mg/dL, P = .013). Cardiovascular and infection events were both decreased in the multidisciplinary care group (P < .001). There was also less requirement of emergent start dialysis (39.6% vs 54.5%, P = .001). The annual cost for the multidisciplinary care group was lower than the nonmultidisciplinary care group (US $2372 vs $3794, P < .001). In addition, considering the reduction of patients requiring renal replacement therapy, the multidisciplinary care program saved a total US $1931 per patient annually., Conclusions: Our analysis demonstrated that the multidisciplinary care program provided better health care and reduced renal replacement therapy in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. Background and Aims: Abdominal aortic calcification (AC) has been reported to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in hemodialysis patients but is rarely discussed in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We examined the independent predictors and predictive power for survival of AC in prevalent PD patients., Methods and Results: AC was detected by computed tomography (CT) and represented as the percentage of the total aortic cross-section area affected by AC (%AC). The predictors of %AC ≥ 15 were examined by multiple logistic regression analysis. Cox proportional hazard analysis was used to determine the hazard ratios associated with high %AC. A total of 183 PD patients were recruited to receive CT scans and divided into group 1 (%AC < 15, n = 97), group 2 (%AC ≥ 15, n = 41), and group 3 (diabetic patients, n = 45). Group 1 patients had lower osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels than group 2 patients (798 ± 378 vs. 1308 ± 1350 pg/mL, p < 0.05). The independent predictors for %AC ≥ 15 included the atherogenic index, OPG, and C-reactive protein (CRP). The age-adjusted hazard ratios associated with %AC ≥ 15 were 3.46 (p = 0.043) for mortality and 1.90 (p = 0.007) for hospitalization., Conclusions: %AC can predict mortality and morbidity in non-diabetic PD patients, and 15% is a good cut-off value for such predictions. Withdrawal from dialysis is ethically appropriate for some patients with multiple comorbidities and a shortened life expectancy. Taiwan has the highest prevalence of dialysis patients in the world, and the National Health Insurance (NHI) program offers renal replacement therapy free of charge. In this review, we discuss its current status and many background issues related to withdrawing dialysis from patients with advanced renal failure in Taiwan. Compared with dialysis therapy, the medical resources for hospice care are relatively sparse. Since the announcement of the Statute for Palliative Care in 2000, there has been a gradual improvement in the laws and health polices supporting dialysis withdrawal. Culture and social customs also have a significant impact on the practice of hospice care. Based on current evidence and in accordance with the local environment, we propose recommendations for the clinical practice of dialysis withdrawal and hospice care. There remains a need to expand upon the community-based hospice care and home care systems to better serve patients. In conclusion, there are cross-cultural differences relating to dialysis withdrawal between Taiwan and Western countries. Background: Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) have a significantly higher prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome (MICS). In the present study of Taiwanese MHD patients, we determined the clinical characteristics and influence of HCV infection on MICS by calculation of the malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS)., Methods: This was a prospective longitudinal study performed at a single hemodialysis (HD) center in Taiwan from September 2007 through March 2008. The study enrolled 58 patients (38%) in the active HCV group and 95 patients (62%) in the non-HCV group. The two or three weekly HD sessions of all patients were followed for 7 months. The MIS was assessed using 10 components, 7 from the conventional subjective global assessment of nutrition and 3 additional elements, body mass index, serum albumin and total iron-binding capacity., Results: HD vintage and total MIS score were greater in patients with active HCV. The active HCV group had significantly longer dialysis vintage and lower total cholesterol but higher total MIS score than the non-HCV group. The MIS 5 score, a measure of major comorbid conditions (including number of years on dialysis), was also significantly higher in the active HCV group., Conclusion: MHD patients with active HCV infections have more severe MICS-associated metabolic and physiological disease than MHD patients without active HCV infection.

Bupropion, a dual norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of major depressive disorder. The most common treatment-emergent adverse events reported with bupropion were headache, dry mouth, nausea and agitation. The following is a case report intended to draw attention to a rarely reported adverse effect of bupropion. This article describes a female adolescent with depression who developed aphthous ulcers while on high-dose bupropion with positive rechallenge. Purpose: The maintenance of good health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important goal for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Whether hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) have different impacts on HRQoL is a concern shared by both physicians and patients. A comparison study of HRQoL between Taiwanese HD and PD patients was conducted., Methods: ESRD patients at 14 hospitals or dialysis centers in northern Taiwan were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The Chinese-language version of the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36, Taiwan Standard Version 1.0) was used to evaluate HRQoL. Ordinal regression analyses were used to explore the independent association between HRQoL scores and dialysis modality. By Bonferroni correction test, a P value of <0.005 was regarded as significant., Results: A total of 866 HD patients and 301 PD patients were included. After adjusting for confounding factors, no difference in HRQoL was found among the entire cohort and the diabetic subgroup., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Taiwanese HD and PD patients had similar HRQoL. The current survey improves our understanding of the association of HRQoL with dialysis modality in Taiwan ESRD population.

This article describes challenges to effective collaboration encountered by nurse educators as they transformed a unit within a school of nursing in Taiwan. This study introduced collaborative action research as a vehicle for curriculum change. Although the team achieved positive outcomes in transforming a unit, the collaborative process was complex with four major challenges: meaning, time, work culture, and conflicting views. This article provides an overview of the study, and the major challenges posed by working together are expounded and illustrated with excerpts drawn from the study data. This paper reports the challenges experienced by nurse educators in changing a teacher-centred, content-driven approach to teaching and learning to a learner-centred, process-driven approach within a School of Nursing in Taiwan. While a general movement towards a learner-centred approach was achieved, the curriculum transformation process was complex and inevitably slow with many challenges. First the study is outlined, with the key challenges experienced by the participating nurse educators explicated and illuminated with excerpts drawn from the research data. Background: The malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) is an indicator of malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome and an outcome predictor in maintenance hemodialysis patients. However, its utility in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and its association with the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) have not yet been examined., Methods: All chronic stable PD outpatients in the PD center of the National Taiwan University Hospital in January 2006 were studied and followed for up to 18 months. The baseline MIS and CCI at the beginning of the study and the dates and causes of mortality or hospitalization during the study period were obtained., Results: A total of 141 PD patients were enrolled. During the study period, 8 patients died and 40 patients had at least one fatal or nonfatal major cardiovascular or infection event. The CCI correlated positively and significantly with the MIS (r = +0.344, p < 0.001). The MIS and CCI were both independent predictors of cardiovascular and infection events in the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model. For every unit increase in the MIS, the adjusted hazard ratio for mortality was 1.177 (95% confidence interval, CI, 1.050-1.320, p = 0.005). For every unit increase in the CCI, the adjusted hazard ratio for mortality was 1.180 (95% CI, 1.046-1.330, p = 0.007)., Conclusions: MIS can predict fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular and infection events in chronic stable PD patients. The CCI, which is closely associated with the MIS, is an independent determinant of cardiovascular and infection events as well. Background: To assess whether angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) offer any additional advantage in confirming the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) and their use in the differentiation of PA subtypes., Methods: A prospective, cohort, head-to-head study was conducted between July 2003 and July 2006. A total of 135 patients received captopril and losartan tests to confirm the diagnosis of PA in the TAIPAI (Taiwan Primary Aldosteronism Investigation) intervention., Results: In total, 71 patients were diagnosed with PA. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve of the postcaptopril plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) was significantly less than that of the postlosartan PAC (0.744 vs. 0.829, P = 0.038). Using an aldosterone-renin ratio (ARR, ng/dl per ng/ml/h) >35 with a PAC >10 ng/dl, the specificity was 89.1% vs. 93.8% and the sensitivity was 66.2% vs. 84.5 % for the captopril test vs. the losartan test, respectively. With respect to the losartan test, the accuracy was 88.9%, the agreement was good (k = 0.778), and there was no disagreement with the McNemar test (P = 0.118). Losartan had the advantage of a better negative predictive value to exclude PA when patients were referred with a serum potassium (SK) level <3.8 mmol/l. When a postlosartan ARR >60 was the cutoff value, the positive predictive value was 82% with a negative predictive value of 57% in distinguishing aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs) from idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA)., Conclusions: The postlosartan ARR and PAC were shown to have better accuracy for the diagnosis of PA than the captopril test. With a postlosartan ARR >60, APAs can be adequately differentiated from IHA.

Gram-negative pathogen-induced continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis- (CAPD) related peritonitis is increasing, especially that caused by enteric pathogens. We describe a 54-year-old Taiwanese man with a case of Campylobacter jejuni-mediated CAPD-related peritonitis and bacteremia. Positive Campylobacter jejuni dialysate and blood cultures confirmed the diagnosis of CAPD-mediated systemic infection. We initially administered intraperitoneal ceftazidime, amikacin and oral azithromycin, but the patient did not recover. We then administered i.v. ciprofloxacin and replaced the hemodialysis (HD). The patient recovered and was discharged with maintenance HD. Treatment of Campylobacter jejuni-mediated CAPD peritonitis is a challenge in areas with high antibiotic resistance.

Background: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction among male haemodialysis patients is high. Sexual dysfunction is composed of both physiological and psychological factors. However, the role of psychological depression is still obscure., Methods: A multicentre cross-sectional study of 411 male haemodialysis patients was conducted to define the determinants of sexual dysfunction. Mid-week pre-dialytic biochemical and haematological parameters were obtained. All patients were required to complete three questionnaires by themselves: (i) the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF, Chinese version); (ii) the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI, Chinese version) and (iii) the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36, Taiwan Standard Version 1.0)., Results: In total, 154 male patients completed the IIEF questionnaire. Their mean age was 50.2 +/- 10.7 years. A linear multivariable regression analysis demonstrated advanced age, diabetes and the presence of depressive symptoms to be independently associated with sexual dysfunction. Subjects with sexual dysfunction had significantly lower quality of life scores., Conclusions: The presence of depressive symptoms, highly prevalent in haemodialysis patients, is an independent factor of sexual dysfunction in male haemodialysis patients. In a comprehensive approach to the management of sexual dysfunction, a thorough evaluation of psychological depression must be included.

Background/aims: Metabolic syndrome (MS) increases morbidity and mortality in the general population. The effects of individual components of MS differ in hemodialysis (HD) patients, but the composite effects of MS in this population are unknown., Methods: We performed a prospective, cohort study including 235 HD patients who were followed up for 3 years. We used modified Asian criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) to define the presence of MS, and compared the hospitalizations and deaths in patients with and without MS., Results: Patients with MS had a lower hospitalization-free ratio, greater annual hospitalization days and frequency than those without MS. The relative risk of the presence of MS was 1.669 in predicting first hospitalization for all causes., Conclusion: The modified Asian criteria for MS successfully predicted the risk of hospitalization as compared with NCEP ATP III criteria in HD patients., (Copyright 2007 S. Background/aims: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important determinant of treatment effectiveness in dialysis patients. To our knowledge, there are no reports evaluating HRQOL of hemodialysis (HD) in Chinese patients. The purpose of this study is to present our results about HRQOL using the 36-Item Short-Form (SF-36) questionnaire on Taiwanese hemodialysis patients., Methods: HRQOL was measured by using the SF-36 questionnaire in 497 HD patients in five hospitals., Results: The following attributes, male gender, age <50 years old, higher education level (HEL), marriage status, employment status (EPS), less comorbid medical condition (CMC), and non-diabetic patients (NDP) were all predicted on a better Physical Component Scale (PCS). Age <50 years old, body mass index >18.5, HEL, EPS and NDP were all predicted on a higher Mental Component Scale (MCS). Scales contributing to a summary measure of physical health, the PCS score was significantly lower in women (35.0 +/- 12.3) than in men (37.9 +/- 12.3). However, there was no difference in the MCS score between women and men. In multivariate analysis, age, CMC, diabetes, serum creatinine (SCr), and erythropoietin responsiveness were significant independent predictors of PCS. Diabetes, educational level, SCr, and erythropoietin responsiveness were significant independent predictors of MCS. All of the individual scales were lower in Taiwanese HD patients than in both the general Taiwanese and US population. Each of the individual scales and MCS scores were substantially lower in the Taiwan HD group than in the US HD cohort. However, the bodily pain of PCS was significantly higher in the Taiwan HD group, although the mean PCS scores for the Taiwan HD group and the US HD study participants were nearly equal at 36.3 and 36.1, respectively., Conclusion: The physical and mental aspects of quality of life are substantially lower for Taiwanese HD patients, except for higher bodily pain tolerance. A number of demographic and clinical characteristics have a significant impact on HRQOL in Taiwanese HD patients.
