Background: There are no published reports of cross-cultural equivalence and interrater reliability at the level of individual symptom items assessed by a semi-structured clinical interview employing operationalised clinician ratings.Aims: To assess the cross-cultural clinical equivalence and reliability of a Chinese version of the World Health Organization Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN).Method: UK-US and Taiwanese groups of psychiatrists used Chinese and English transcripts of videotape interviews of Taiwanese patients to discuss cross-cultural issues and ratings of SCAN items. Item ratings were compared quantitatively individually and pooled by SCAN section.Results: Chinese equivalents were found for all SCAN items. No between-group differences were found for most individual items, but there were differences for some scaled items. Average agreement between the two groups was 69-100%.Conclusions: Cross-cultural implementation based on SCAN in Taiwan appears valid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Virtual Reality is one of the emerging technologies with a potential to improve well-being, quality of life and fitness. • Older adults showed significant improvements in quality of life, happiness and some functional fitness components, among those who experienced virtual reality sessions. • The research supports future considerations to use specific VR apps to assist active ageing. Ageing is a complex process with physical, psychological, and social changes, which can lead to diseases and disability, and further reduce happiness levels. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology with the potential to improve overall well-being, quality of life (QoL), muscle activity and balance. Our study aimed to determine the influence of VR sessions on the QoL, happiness, and functional fitness components of an elderly cohort. A non-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted. Sixty participants, who visited the active ageing center at the university were randomized into two groups- intervention and control. The intervention group received VR experience sessions for 15 min twice a week for a duration of 6 weeks, while the control group received no sessions. Participants filled out a questionnaire for QoL assessment and happiness assessment. They were also tested for several functional fitness components. Both questionnaires and fitness tests were conducted at the beginning and at the end of study. QoL improved by some metrics assessed (Pain/Discomfort and Anxiety/Depression). Happiness significantly improved in the intervention group relative to the control group. Among the functional fitness tests, the back scratch test 1st and back scratch test 2nd were measured to be significantly improved in the intervention group in comparison to control group. VR sessions have potential to influence the well-being and functional fitness of older adults and further support the process of healthy and active ageing. Statins have been shown to be a beneficial treatment as chemotherapy and target therapy for lung cancer. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of statins in combination with epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy for the resistance and mortality of lung cancer patients. A population-based cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan Cancer Registry database. From January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2012, in total 792 non-statins and 41 statins users who had undergone EGFR-TKIs treatment were included in this study. All patients were monitored until the event of death or when changed to another therapy. Kaplan-Meier estimators and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate overall survival. We found that the mortality was significantly lower in patients in the statins group compared with patients in the non-statins group (4-y cumulative mortality, 77.3%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 36.6%-81.4% vs. 85.5%; 95% CI, 78.5%-98%; P = .004). Statin use was associated with a reduced risk of death in patients the group who had tumor sizes <3 cm (hazard ratio [HR], 0.51, 95% CI, 0.29-0.89) and for patients in the group who had CCI scores <3 (HR, 0.6; 95% CI, 0.41-0.88; P = .009). In our study, statins were found to be associated with prolonged survival time in patients with lung cancer who were treated with EGFR-TKIs and played a synergistic anticancer role., (© 2020 The Authors.
